Oscar Leung Completes the UVU North Pole Marathon

The annual UVU North Pole Marathon was held on April 9, where 45 runners had to complete a 42-kilometer race under a temperature of -30° Celsius. Oscar Leung (梁烈唯), who was one of the eight runners representing TVB, completed the race in 11 hours and 14 seconds. Although he came in second to last place, it was an achievement just to finish.

Excitedly planting the TVB flag at the terminal point with latitude of 90 degrees, Oscar exclaimed, “I’ve never participated in a long-distance running race, and my first time is one of such great challenge. Even other contestants said I’m strong, because they never thought I’d finish.”

Recalling the entire procedure, Oscar said, “I had preparations that it would be tough, but I never thought it would be that arduous. I never thought it would be so cold that my eyelashes would freeze within half a minute. In addition, I was running on ice. It melted or cracked, which made me run on uneven surfaces. It was easy to trip and fall if I wasn’t paying attention, so I spent lots of energy just to find balance.”

Oscar revealed that throughout the race, he was most afraid of getting frostbite. “I was sweating as I ran, and my clothes and gloves were wet. It froze really quickly, and I became colder the more I ran. I was scared that I would lose sense in my fingers and toes, and would have to undergo an operation to get them amputated! Among all the runners, one person had frostbite on all ten toes before the race even began, and had to drop out.”

The UVU North Pole Marathon allowed Oscar to feel the power of nature, and how humans are so miniscule in contrast. He expressed regret in not being able to achieve better results due to his deployment mistakes. “I ran too fast in the first two rounds and used up a lot of energy. During the seventh and eighth round, not heading over to the rest station was a big mistake. Actually, I should have taken a break whenever I finished one round, to drink something hot and eat a little for energy. Instead, I didn’t rest and brought my weariness from one round to the next, which affected my results. If there is another opportunity, I will participate for sure. I’ve learned my lesson from this experience.”

  1. I cannot imagine myself running in -30 degrees Celsius although it would have been a great achievement. I am beyond proud of Oscar for not giving up. Truly inspiring!

  2. It is very dangerous, thanks for representing 4sians, or Hern Kong Yung. It is better to be there and not be there. Like some have said, we are all over places, except in warring places.

    1. He represented TVB did’nt he not held the tvb banner? He did’nt represent HK, or China nor did he represent Malaysia or asia to be frank. He seem to much in to licking tvb’s foot most, thats how it seem.

  3. Those are really extreme conditions. I cannot believe Oscar even considered the challenge as I thought he might be a wimp. Goes to show how wrong I was. I cannot begin to fathom what -30 degrees is like and to run a marathon too. That is like a slow torturous death.

    1. Hats off to you Oscar. Congrats!!! You put mind over matter and achieved something great. Wow. I am impressed!
