Park Shin Hye Undergoes Onscreen Transformation
Known for portraying long-suffering and determined characters, Park Shin Hye shares about her transformation into a devil in upcoming drama The Judge From Hell, where she is set to play a villainous character for the first time!
A Breakthrough in Character
During the press release , the actress laughingly quipped that she was “no longer the poor Park Shin Hye”. Despite having a field time unleashing her badassness in the new drama, she continues to radiate warmth in real life, lending her sweater to a co-star who had not prepared her own.
Park Shin-hye plays a judge who is possessed by a demon, and will send ten unrepentant criminals to hell. In the drama’s teaser, her sinister gaze a huge departure from her usual demure roles. Park Shin-hye shared, “This role is not an antagonist, but is someone who has no scruples and is very straightforward, I thought for very long, about how I can flesh out the character to let viewers feel that ‘although a demon, she’s pretty cute’, this role is a good chance to break away from my previous roles,”
Faced with challenges of portraying a merciless demon, she said, “I am a demon, so I can’t feel the emotional range of humans, but when I watch my co-stars’ performances I can’t help but be touched, this puts me in an awkward spot,” As someone who sheds tears very easily in everyday life, Park Shin Hye is finding it more of a challenge to follow the director’s instruction of refraining from tearing up this time!
Director Park Jin-pyo confirms that the actress has a huge breakthrough this time around, and explained that she was chosen to portray the devil as every role she has done in the past is a determined character. “I feel that an actor, she has desires and ambition”, adding that viewers will surely fall in love with her!
Having debuted in Stairway to Heaven and later finding fame with You’re Beautiful, The Judge from Hell also marks Park Shin Hye’s return to SBS after 8 years. “While it is good to ride on the merits of previous works, things are often unexpected and I will candidly accept any viewers’ feedback,” she said. Co-star Kim Ah Young revealed that filming took place during winter and she did not prepare enough thermal clothing; “Park Shin Hye saw it and immediately gave me thermal coat she prepared, this left a deep impression on me,”
