Raymond Lam Denies Plastic Surgery on His Chin

Attending the filming of TVB’s Jade Solid Gold program, Raymond Lam Fung was asked by reporters whether he underwent recent plastic surgery on his chin to increase his good fortune this year. Raymond grabbed the hand of the reporter to feel his chin, laughing that he had always possessed a full chin since childhood. Raymond said there was no need for him to undergo plastic surgery for his chin. He laughed off the recent rumors.

Receiving the Asia-Pacific’s Most Popular Male Singer Award twice in a row at the Jade Solid Gold music awards, Raymond’s win caused a heated discussion among netizens. Raymond said that he will only focus on doing his best and will not pay attention to the discussion.

Jayne: TVB’s Jade Solid Gold celebrated its 30th anniversary and notable artists such as Shirley Kwan, Leon Lai, and Vivian Chow made appearances. The 1990s had their share of idols such as Leon and Vivian, who were known more for their looks than voices, but the 2000s and 2010s have taken music idols a lot further.

Will Raymond be the next Andy Lau and become a long-lasting performer in the circle? I think Andy Lau benefited from higher quality music and film production in the early 1990s, but he was still an “idol singer” in my book although some of his songs are really nice. I believe Andy’s long-lasting stardom is attributed to his memorable movies. He played many different roles such as poker player, gangster, lawyer, playboy, hit man, police man, daredevil, etc. Even without his music career, he would have been a big superstar.

This year, I’ll like to see Raymond Lam break out of the idol mold and showcase more improvements in acting and singing. Specifically, I’ll like to see him in more serious film projects, playing more complex characters than just the romantic lead in box office pleasers. Raymond does have a “film quality” about him, but he’ll need to take some more risks in his acting to develop a more definitive style.

TV acting, characterizations, and the scripts are relatively safe and do not allow for great leaps forward. Wayne Lai was “slowly seasoned” to perfection over 20+ years of acting. I think films allow actors to improve in greater strides due to higher production values, more experienced colleagues, directors and better developed scripts, silly comedies not included of course.

  1. With Raymond’s current popularity and connections to movie world I think Raymond can really follow Andy Lau’s path. Miss Virginia Lok has said sometime ago that Raymond will concentrate highly on movies and singing.

I agree with u Jayne. If Raymond want to be an acclaimed superstar in movies he should avoid silly movies such as the 72 Tenants thing that Eric Tsang has been doing.

Raymond did a very wise decision by choosing the ancient legend White Snake movie which let him act with Jet Li and is blockbuster production. I heard that the movie will also shoot a sequel with the same cast and beside that Raymond will also film for more movies.

  2. I think Raymond did have plastic surgery on his chin… or his jawline or someplace cuz he seriously looks different to me. I liked his look before, but he is still a great actor. Keep up the good work! I support your acting! (And not the plastic surgery >.< I think you've had enough…)

    1. I so agree with you. He used to have a softer image more of a babyface not this really jagged face structure. His face is so much longer and there’s something to it. His wining is good but his acting lacks. Maybe he does need to be in better roles. I’m tired of seeing his pairing up with females romatic type of stories. I want to see him in a more masculine image instead and wear better clothes. Still love him though!!!

  3. Well honestly, I think even if he did then he would not openly admit it to the public(even though we can all see it at times). I am guessing it is because he doesn’t want people to think that he had to “alter” his look in order to look the way he does. Everyone knows that natural beauty is always above altered beauty.

I can see Raymond being like ANdy, but lets see since only time will tell. I sort of agree with Jayne about Andy, however, I think that his TVB series in early part of his career really helped him become who he is now as well. I am not sure if he would be where he is now if he did not star in all of those TVB series. I must say that I don’t really like any Chinese movies in general and think that all of Andy’s movies cannot match up to his TV series which are now rare classics. But yea, his long lasting stardom is due to his movies and partly his singing too. I think Andy is not a bad singer but do agree that back then he was more of an idol singer.

      1. Are we talking to the same LF? He looks younger than his age (31) in real person.

      2. @Fox: Look at the the latest tabloid photos… he has bags in his eyes. The face is getting lots of lines. His skin is not really clear. Im not sure that he is using the right makeup or skin care to be young and good looking.

Hell, even at JSG Award show… he is aging quite a lot a year ago.

  4. Remind me of a quote: “Natural is beautiful but we need makeup to be natural”.

Wear makeup, do plastic surgery, use botox, go on diet, etc., all are the same to make an appearance to audience. They are artists.

    1. Well I think wearing make up and going on a diet are just normal things that you can do yourself and are nothing big and major like using botox or plastic surgery. You can put on make up yourself and go on a diet on your own but you sure can’t do that with plastic surgery or botox. Plastic surgery is something way more serious and permanent. Also, if it goes wrong, your health will suffer in the long run. I think putting on too much make up will damage your skin in the long run as well. You are right though, they are artists so looks are really important for them. If they only had talent and no looks, then I highly doubt they will get that far…

    2. Actually wrong diet can kill you faster than a plastic surgery ^^. I find some Chinese artists are quite crazy when they raise something in their stomach to be skinny. It’s freak.

Nowaday showbiz changed. Look will make them go farer than talents. Talents without look won’t be promoted. That’s why all the artists wanna look good.

      1. It is all about the appearance in hong kong films but not in America. There’s a lot of non good looking people that a lot of Americans and the media highly promoted how sexy they are. They need to stop thinking they look good because they don’t. It’s just everyong kept saying they look good then everyone follows. Annoying!!!

      2. Here we are talking about Chinese/HK artists, not Western ones.

But to talk about Western ones, if look doesn’t affect them, then Nicole Kidman didn’t need to use botox that much.

  5. Besides being a versatile and talented artist, Andy also has a great work ethic and attitude that has helped him maintain the support and love from his fans and those that support him. Even as probably the most popular HK star today, Andy never slows down and is always active-if not in movies, then in music. He is always out there, always in front of the camera. I don’t remember him taking any hiatus from his career, therefore maintaining his exposure and popularity. He’s famous among the older generation, but also within the younger generations. But most importantly, Andy has great social and networking skills. Among the 4 heavenly kings, he seems to communicate the best with the media through his interviews. Besides his hidden marriage, I hardly hear any negative press from him.

If Ray keeps his momentum going, he has a high chance of gaining the same level of success that Andy has. He has proved that he can act and sing and needs to work on more challenging projects. But I think he also needs to have a good work ethic consistently to really the momentum going and not let it stop, and he should always work on trying the improve himself with each project he does.

    1. @ Aly,
You are right about Andy and being his fan for over 20 years, I have seen that he is a hard worker and has a good work ethic and attitude. If Raymond can continue to work and all, then he can be like Andy. However, I don’t know if Raymond can because he seems really tired and haggard already… I wonder if he will be able to take care of himself and have good enough health to keep on going like that??

      1. HieTieShou,

I see your point. I know Ray is getting more tired each and everyday. Hope he will be able to have a better work/life balance so he doesn’t get himself too weak as he has a long way to go. I wonder what Andy’s secret is? He looks so good even getting close to 50. I know Botox is part of it, but still. He seems healthier than Ray does and Ray is only in his 30’s!

  6. I don’t really think he had surgery on his chin, but most likely, he did on his nose.

He definitely needs better movies if he wants to break out of the idol category. I also want to see more versatility from him when it comes to singing.

  7. Even if surgery had been done on his chin, it does not seem to have altered his looks in any way. To me he looks just as he did before. Nevertheless, it really does not matter whether anything has been done to him because there are other things that matter more, like improving his acting and singing. I’m afraid that
at this moment neither of these has been terribly impressive to warrant him to be compared with Andy Lau.

  8. I’m watching one of Raymond’s earlier series now – A Step Into The Past, released in 2001. I didn’t watch it before and got a shock when Raymond appeared on screen. He looked really different back then! Sure, he’s lost weight since then but his features do look different. I’m pretty sure he had work done on his face. I’ve no problems with anyone getting plastic surgery, it’s a personal choice, but it amuses me when people try very hard to deny it when the results are quite obvious. Haha.

  9. Raymond looks really thin in that above picture. Perhaps his face shape has changed due to weight loss. AND his skin looks terrible! It’s SO DRY! Wow, someone needs a to take a cue from Fan Bing Bing and start using a moisturizer mask :P.

  10. wow, raymond looks so tired and haggard. No point doing plastic surgery if you’re not gonna take care of yourself cuz you’re gonna lose your looks faster n faster.

  11. I agree that Raymond looks really thin in the above picture. His weight seems to fluctuate a lot, which is not good at all. When he was in a Step in the Past, his nose was not as defined as now, so no doubt that he had something done. But regardless, he was still quite handsome in a Step in the Past.
I think it’s possible that Raymond can become the next Andy Lau, however, he needs to chose his projects carefully and give himself a break. I think actors need some time to withdraw themselves from each role before jumping into the next project otherwise they won’t have time to analyze what they can improve and sink themselves into characters. He seems to be working non-stop, series, movies, singing, etc… and probably does not have time to rest.

  12. Forgot the plastic surgery….Look at his face, lately. he is so tired and aging quickly. Seriously, he needs a lengthy vacation and really needs relive the stress from the grueling work.

I hope he doesnt collapsed and it will be turn into non-stop coverage.

    1. I totally agree. When I watched Mysteries of Love, I was like, whoa, what happened to his face? He looked so tired. No plastic surgery can fix a tired face.

      1. You should try to watch him on Growing Through Life. He is even worse. I never seen a guy with a long face like Raymond Lam. To me he looks so gay…

  13. Personally, I feel that Raymond is quite the ‘yes man’ when it comes to his career. Maybe he doesn’t want to miss any opportunities. He keeps working and working and working until his health deteriorates and he also doesn’t seem that selective in his work. His music is the same. I don’t know how much input he has in his music. His songs are mostly popular ballads. Maybe, for now, he is just waiting to get more established first before having his own style.

    1. I like the word “yes man”. The movie of Jim Carey, right?

LF is a kind of “yes man”. Maybe he thinks he is still young, still need to reach to something before saying “no”.

  14. Who make him become a skeleton if not the reporters themselves? In 2009 when he has a bit meaty in his face, they called him “fat like a pig”.

  15. @Aly,
Well, I am guessing part of it may be genetics?? We all know that Andy uses botox in order to look young and I am glad that he at least admits it. I think Andy is experienced in this area and knows how to balance his time better than Raymond does? I think Andy also knows how to take care of himself while he is working hard. But Raymond doesn’t seem to take care of himself much at all. I think he just stresses himself out too much that he does not even consider taking care of himself. Lets hope that he can take care of himself better if he wants to keep on going since he has a long career ahead of him…

  16. I really really don’t think Ray had plastic surgery anywhere. I think it’s normal that people look different when compared to old photos of them cause people change over years. Ray looks different probably cause he looks skinnier than what he looked like a few years before and he looks more mature. Also I think his face changed from working too hard.Make-up also can change a person’s look. Probably his looks changed cause Make-up improved over the years.
I don’t think Ray would need plastic surgery anyways. And he’s from a rich/well known family. Don’t think his parents would aprove of it.

I really hope that TVB would give Ray a break. He despirately needs one!And personally, I like watching dramas more than movies, so I’d like Ray film dramas instead of movies.I’d like to see him win the best male actor award before he moves on to movies, but it’s good to hear that Ray is going to concentrate more on 2 areas, so that he can spend more time on them, and do good in them.

    1. Yes it’s normal for people to look different compared to old photos, not just celebrities but normal folks like you and me too. But how come no one else is “rumored” to have plastic surgery? Why doesn’t anyone accuse Joyce Cheng of having plastic surgery? Her face shape is totally different from her chubbier days. That’s because even though the fat is gone, her eyes, nose, and mouth are all still the same shape. For goodness sakes, Raymond Lam went from having a big, flat nose to one that is tall and refined and he can still blatantly deny that he went under the knife. Unbelievable. What’s more unbelievable is that the die hard fans actually believe the BS.

      1. ^^ Joyce Cheng is accused by some mags for having plastic surgery on her eyes and to get thin faster.

LF’s nose is never flat and small. You can see in ASITP, it’s high already. Now, it’s still high and big. Or you can look at his young picture, when is a small kid his nose is already high. He had a nose job when he is a 5-6 years old kid? I think it’s unbelievable. And you can see his mom’s picture, cover the eyes and mouth, only see the nose and compare it with her son’s, you will see the same result.

I thought he did nose job, but after rewatch ASITP, I find his face is even more shape there is even more shape than his face in The Four. Tat make me confused.

      2. I don’t think so. Joyce just lost a lot of weight, her face is too pointed but other than that she looks the same. Moreover Lydia Shum and Adam Cheng were two rather pretty people themselves. Not sure about what she did to get so thin but I believe she is rather disciplined. Her face is thin but her body is normal so nothing out of ordinary.

Lam Fung did do something to his nose which was subtle but changed his face. Everywhere else I am not sure. Chin? Ask some dedicated fans to do a side by side comparison. Nose can’t fight on that since fans knew when he did the procedure.

      3. I don’t say Joyce did plastic surgery. I said she is accused to did by reporters.

The famous nose of LF is said to be done on 2005, after TOB. But in 2009, when he wore a glasses on, his nose looks the same to 2003. The Four is 2008 while ASITP is 1999/2000, but his face is more shape in ASITP than The Four. That’s wat make me confused.

  17. Joyce Cheng is always being viewed or reported negatively although the intensity lessen now. Personally I don’t think she’s that bad. I found her acting tolerable as a newbie and her singing is quite good.

I don’t care whatever she did or not did to get to her current shape as long as she think it’s good or healthy for her.

The sad thing is some entertainers are hell bent on getting more “beautiful” because of the pressure from the media and ordinary viewers alike. Admit it, it’s easier to like and admire a pretty face and a beautiful figure at first glance.

    1. Nah – personality counts a lot too. The famous ones always have the right mixture. Eason Chan is a prime example.

I think Joyce probably had some sort of a surgery for the sudden weight loss, however, it is very possible she didn’t b/c she’s still so young.

      1. What I mean is, will you admire Eason Chan at first glance onstage?(before he starts opening his mouth and sing, that is :))

I do think that Wang Lee Hom has a very good mixture and package 🙂

      2. I don’t believe she has surgery. Her slimming down is not a sudden change. It’s gradual. she grow from fat -> plump -> normal -> slim.

      3. Just listen to Joyce’s interview. Joyce said she started the slimming program 7 years ago.
