Shirley Yeung Signs New Management in Malaysia

After leaving TVB last May, Shirley Yeung (楊思琦) took her time to carefully consider the future path of her career. After hosting television programs for Hong Kong’s i-Cable station and working in Mainland China, Shirley announced that she will increase her reach to the Malaysian market.

Along with Philip Ng (伍允龍), Jessica C., and Ana R., Shirley attended the Asia launch press conference for the new management agency, OC Merit Entertainment. Based in Malaysia, OC Merit Entertainment strives to be the premier entertainment hub for Malaysians and many Chinese-speakers around the globe.

Despite signing with OC Merit Entertainment, who will manage her entertainment career in Malaysia, Shirley said she will not give up on the Hong Kong and China markets, as she will manage her own jobs in both regions.

On why she decided to expand her career to Malaysia, Shirley said she wanted to try out acting in Malaysian dramas. Wanting to change her image, Shirley said, “I don’t think being sexy or revealing works for me anymore,” she added.

Leaves Daughter Behind

Leaving Hong Kong for work, Shirley misses her three-year-old daughter, Krystal Yeung. “My mother told me that my daughter hit her head on the corner of the table, and now it’s swollen. I need to make a video call to see what’s going on.”

  1. Malaysia??
It’s good for her since majority artists in Malaysia acted way lousier than her.
    I mean the Chinese artists.
The Malay artists are okay. They acted really well.

    1. Please la, the Malays are no better. No need to be politically correct here. You won’t be charged under sedition act, if that’s what you afraid of.
BTW, the Chinese drama on Ntv7 and 8TV on 7pm slots are quite good.

      1. Not trying to be political here.I am Malay but I enjoy Frederick Lee(Lee Ming Zhong) and Debbie Goh in Age of Glory.

    2. I dont agree, malays artistes are no better than the chinese Malaysian, both are equally bad.

I agree that she would do very well in Msia just like the emcee from Melody FM, she’s from HK and I dont think she would ever go back to work in HK. For mediocre talents in HK is considered really good here. Money wise and stress level surely here can earn more money and stress level is much lower compare to HK.

      1. True true but even Malaysians dislike cheats. But the single mother angle might help her image.

We need good cantonese speaker here because we want to erode our Malaysian-ness and insists on everyone say K.L in the higher pitched Kay-Yell or calling Bah Kut Teh as Yuk Kuat Cha.

        Sigh.

      2. Yuk guat cha is just Cantonese for bak kut Teh..don’t see the significance at all.

      1. @coralie: but artists in Singapore can’t speak Cantonese on their shows. They have to speak mandarin.

      2. I don’t think they have to.
Dubbing. Not the greatest but an alternative. Many HK artistes have been lured to SG stations, and lots of HKgers are in Singapore.

She can also bring her mom and daughter.
No need to pay top $ to get elite private schooling.

      3. Raymond, actually that is a misconception. Overall malaysians speak mandarin. Or Hokkien for certain places. Cantonese only in very specific states, such as KL and even that nowadays a lot speaking mandarin. After all TVB series come in dual languages.

      4. Nomad, in all honesty Hk stars who go to Singapore either can speak English and so act in an English languaged series (no dubbing) or can speak competent mandarin and act in a mandarin languaged series (no dubbing). Because frankly Singaporean mandarin’s mandarin is not like Taiwanese Qiong Yau type anyway. Accent may even localise it.

      5. @ Funn:

Sorry, reply to you got slotted in wrong and went below.

    1. Singaporeans cannot speak cantonese, majority Malaysians can. Period

      1. I had thought the majority of Malaysian Chinese are of Fujian origin and therefore Hokkien speaking.

      2. Really boils down to what dialect group you come from in colorful SE Asia. Dialects (except for Hainanese, are all pretty similar).

It’s all part of the SE Asian language-rojak (rojak = salad)

When in college in SG, a good friend M’sian classmate of mine was from Johore. She could speak was Cantonese and Malay very fluently – better than her English actually. She went off to a UK Law school, and should be a practising lawyer out there somewhere these days.

I have heard more M’sians speaking Cantonese even when abroad in Western Chinatowns – but maybe they all come from KL.
My first roomies in NAmerica were from Sabah, Ipoh, Penang and HK …. and 2 knew Hokkien/Fujian. The one from Ipoh could also speak Cantonese fluently.

I was born and bred in Singapore. Speak more Teochew than Hokkien (very similar but different accents), Cantonese and Mandarin, Malay.

        @ Funn:
Mandarin in SG is the Beijing type (the standard they try to follow and spend tons of $ on, hiring Beijingers), or the pasar(market) type interspersed with dialect and accent.

Even the Taiwan Qiong Yau type mandarin = Those in Taipei speak the cringe-worthy (
肉麻) Qiong Yau type Mandarin, which can be a little ‘tei’娇气 (especially from the guys).

Then there’s the heavily Hokkien accent type Taiwan Mandarin, complete with slang: “Wah sei, how su-ia 哥 hor!” :
        Translated to SE-Asian style:
Wah-lau, so good looking male leh

From what I notice, most of the Taipei crowd dont’ like to use Mi-nan-yu (Fujian) or pretend they don’t speak it, because they want to disassociate themselves from any ‘countrified’ roots – which is the outside-Taipei city residents.

  2. I don’t ever remember Shirley in a sexy role. She can’t really do sexy. She’s great in photos and can do modeling for lingerie wear for sure, but her acting isnt good enough to make sexy believable.

  3. Its sad that TVB gave up on her she was rising at one point I miss watching her her acting skill arent bad well overall I hope her the best!!!

  4. Personally I think Shirley should just give up on filming. She’s not that strong of an actress and she’s not getting younger. If she focused her energy on ads, promotions, etc. she would be making much more money.

    1. True. Selling bear in nightclubs in China is not bad for her. I am sure she is good in persuading customers to buy beers from her, she’ll get very good income.
