Tavia Yeung Asks TVB for Big Raise

TVB’s big stars have left the station in recent years. With her contract due to expire in three days, Tavia Yeung (楊怡) reportedly attempted to negotiate a massive increase in her salary if she were to remain at the station.

Getting married to Him Law (羅仲謙) in England last week, Tavia has returned to Hong Kong and resumed her work. At a promotional event for The Last Healer in Forbidden City <末代御醫>, Tavia was teased by coworkers for “eloping”.

Tavia laughed and said she is still not used to being called Mrs. Law. Tavia smiled, “Thank you! I don’t know how to respond – I’m still not used to it. We’ll have the wedding banquet planned for the end of the year. I don’t want things to be too rushed. I’ll have to find bridesmaids but nothing has been settled yet.”

Outcome of TVB Negotiations Remains Unclear

Initially, it was rumored that Tavia will not be renewing her TVB contract in order to concentrate on her personal life. However, seeing that TVB has been lacking quality actresses since the departure of Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) and Fala Chen (陳法拉) in recent years, Tavia saw this as an opportunity to prove her worth. It was speculated that Tavia demanded her salary to be doubled during negotiations.

While management executives were unhappy with Tavia’s secret marriage to Him, TVB desperately tried to get Tavia to stay by adding incentives in her contract. With Producer Mui Siu Ching (梅小青) returning next month, TVB plans to create a Hong Kong and Mainland collaboration to boost Tavia’s popularity in China.

Tavia expressed, “If I were to renew my contract, I hope it goes smoothly. My relationship with the company is like that of a couple – I hope to reach an understanding.”

    2. TVB needs to hire young artistes, old fadans are withering in looks are more suitable for aunty and mother roles

@yummysukiyaki That’s true, but from the young artistes hired so far eg Sisley and Grace, they are getting nowhere and really a long way off from achieving fadan status. Ali Lee has some potential but she’s not really there yet. So TVB will still need the ever reliable Tavia Yeung to hold the fort!

@freedalas SO TRUE. tavia is not young, but at least she is SO MUCH better than sisley and grace. tavia still has the power to command an increase.

Actually, I think TVB should do the opposite: they need new and younger male leads instead of keep on recycling their “old farts” into so-called gods who are probably as old as Zeus himeslf.

Hope TVB will get her to stay! doubling the salary is probably not that much considering TVB are so cheap!!!!! Hope she’ll stay.

TVB really needs Tavia to stay, but they are giving her crap roles in low productions. Since her best actress win, she hasn’t been in any grand productions.

She should sign a per series contract and work in the mainland.. Her long term plan I think is to settle down and have kids as she is 36 now..

Yeh. Tavia as been acting in the same forgotten repetitive roles for years. I really don’t think keeping her will make much difference. The only positive would be giving a smaller quota of lead roles for Grace and Sisley. To me the likes of Tracy Chu and Ali Lee have already surpassed Tavia in terms of creating an impact within their roles. Tavia is just the female Ron Ng. You would know that she was in the series but wouldnt remember the character.

TVB is famous for being cheap, their artistes are paid very little. Its no wonder most of their talented artistes went to the mainland once their contract is up.

If she does leave Tvb for sure yea it is Tvb lost but, don’t forget we still have a few talent one too like Nancy Wu, Natalie Tong and Mandy Wong or even Ali Li. I’m not looking forward to see Grace or Sisley I prefer to see Jacquline Wong her acting very cute.

@asian2015 Nancy Wu is the only bona fide fadan left in TVB if Tavia leaves.

Natalie and Mandy cannot carry a series.

Ali Lee can, we can see TVB giving her opportunities now.

Grace Chan needs time to develop, but will get there unless she gets hitched to Kevin Cheng 1st, which will end her career.

Sisley Choi I don’t think so, unless TVB promotes her like hell, which means we see more of her on screen, that is not good for us.

TVB are lacking 1st line actresses who can act and carry a series at the moment.

@mulder99 I don’t see why Natalie and Mandy can’t carry a series. They both have more experience than this two newbie Grace and Sisley. I would have to say Natalie are a little way much better than Mandy. I heard Adia Chan is returning for Tvb that’s a good news to hear. I wish Noel Leung Siu Bing would willing to come back too she’s one of my favorite actress from the 90’s.

@asian2015 Experience doesn’t mean can carry a series. Moses is experienced, but he alone will not entice me to switch on the TV. Has to be someone charismatic and viewers face. That person can be a total newbie but has magnetic presence and commanding screen presence. TVB is lacking Felix Wong factor.

@funnlim this really illustrates how one man’s meat is another’s poison. Moses is not my cup of tea but he was immensely popular in his heyday (not sure abt how popular he is now). As for felix I’ve always thought he was meh even in his heyday. For me, none of the 5 tigers stood out.

@isay Felix wasn’t the best actor but there was something about him that stood out and worth remembering. This quality is lacking today, quality that makes a star a star.

        • isay replied:

@funnlim i hv to disagree on that. He was a very wooden actor to me that’s the only thing i remembered of him. He has the common man look to me, like someone taking some hard knocks in life, the 80s equivalent of Raymond Wong with the same kind of weather beaten face. Comparing the 5 tigers i think Michael was the only one with x factor ( not wow type but somehow stood out because of his physique; however he was a wooden actor too). But hey we have different taste so it’s ok as there’s no right or wrong.

@isay it’s personal preference. like @funnlim I am also a Felix fan from before and still think he is awesome!

As for k candy. You are not watching the right dramas. Yes some are pretty feminine but many are darn right sexy. And majority can act and have other talents too.

Not a fan of Moses but like Aimee. However Aimee’s roles have all been limited due to Cantonese not being her 1st language. Eddie Kwan probably gave the best performance of any actor in years in Swipe Tap Love. It’s so good that you could just skip to his scenes everytime. A pity he didn’t get an award for it!

How was Moses immensely popular in his heyday? He probably has the same number of fans then as he has now. Felix had the most success of the five tigers but he was the worn out from it and dislikes acting because of it. The others had a few popular series, then moved on to expand their acting or business elsewhere.

@jimmyszeto well i won’t bet my last dollar that he has the same amount of fans then and now. Everyone reaches a peak and declines in terms of popularity. Mo is no exception.

          @isay
Are you trying to twist my words? He could have a few thousand more or less fans today but that is hardly a difference in popularity. That doesent change someone from being immensely popular to being slightly popular. What I’m trying to say is, he hasn’t ever been immensely popular at anytime. He has never had the majority of the market share of popularity in TVB, nevermind in Hong Kong or overseas.

@jimmyszeto Is there a need to be so aggressive? I didn’t quite get what you were trying to say so I answered as what i had originally intended to convey which is that he was more popular then compared to now. Moses as far as I know was very popular a few years ago and still is popular (as opposed to immensely popular vs slightly popular cos i won’t say that he’s only slightly popular now) However i would say that he isn’t as popular now as he used to be. He still is TVB’s big brother, just look at where he stands in the lineup at events which is centre front line or one position off centre.

          @jimmyszeto

I wasn’t meant to sound aggressive. I understand that someone can have 50000 fans 1 week and next week have 50004 fans. I’m not going to bet my bottom dollar against that. I’m not bothered where he stands in the annual TVB picture because TVB only represents a portion of Hong Kong, negligible percentage of China, Malaysia, Singapore etr and virtually nothing overseas. I’m just saying he hasn’t been immensely popular. Yes. He has been promoted within TVB to lead role and has established himself there and got a few endorsements after marrying another TVB actress but he is far from being immensely popular. If Moses had been immensely popular I’m not sure what words we can use to describe Tony’s Leung, Andy lau, Brad Pitt and even Raymond Lam

@jimmyszeto This is a pointless discussion. I’m talking about popularity as measured by the acceptance of an artiste by the general TV viewing public and he is well accepted by TV viewers. So we’re using different yardstick.

That makes sense. Just pointing out that most of the male leads have been accepted by the general TVB viewers which is why they are continually casted. Back when Moses was leading Heart of Greed his popularity is very similar to what it is now. it hasn’t increased or decreased by significant proportions.

I think TVB will be starting to look outside for actresses to fill roles. Adia Chan is returning for a series.

Flora Chan has completed a series for TVB.

Noel Leung would be good, her husband has already returned to TVB and made a few series already.

Just watched Eat La Men episode 5 and Pinky Cheung Man Chi was on.. TVB should sign her up she still looking hot as ever, TVB should look at doing a series with Joey Meng, Alice Chan and Pinky Cheung together, that would be a great reunion.
