Grace Chan Criticized For Exaggerated Hosting Style

After being winning the 2013 Miss Hong Kong Pageant, Grace Chan (陳凱琳) was quickly promoted to host variety programs and star in dramas. Besides taking part in the series, Trade Wars <商戰>, Grace is also one of the hosts in the 18-episode food program, Organized Dining <搵食飯團>, which currently airs every Monday evening. Earlier criticized by a netizen for her hosting style, Grace expressed that she respects the varying opinions and will not be stressed over the attacks.

A netizen remarked online that Grace’s facial expressions as the host for Organized Dining were too exaggerated. Grace explained, “All my expressions were real and came from within me. Some people like them, while others will say they’re exaggerated. Everyone has their own reasons, so I thank them for their opinions. I don’t mind the criticism!”

At a smartphone function yesterday, Grace admitted that she goes everywhere with her head bent over her phone. “Once, my dad said he had no idea what I was doing on my phone all the time. I lied and told him my manager was contacting me, but honestly, I was just playing games!” she laughed. Besides gaming on her phone, Grace also enjoys taking pictures. However, she would only post drama-related photos or those taken with her friends online.

For the upcoming Father’s Day on June 15, Grace plans to buy her father a coffee machine and prepare a batch of home-baked cookies. It will be a practical gift, since both Grace and her father enjoys afternoon high tea.

  1. omgggg!!! i agreee!!!!! i really like Grace and all and think she’s one of the better Miss HK in the recent years, but omigosh, i cannot stand her over enthusiastic talking and hosting!!! it’s so exaggerated!

and also i know eats an eating show and they’re supposed to show how delicious the food is…but shouldn’t she have a little more table manners when eating? hahah i thought she was not very graceful or elegant while she was eating…and she’s repping Miss HK

    1. examples of her bad table manners? what episode? thx

      1. taling with her mouth full was all i really saw. it wasn’t terrible, but i expected more from a Miss HK. i’ve seen other Miss HK hosts food shows or were guests on food shows and they were more lady like while i saw Grace taking big bites of food and just stuffing her mouth with food.

sorry for being so critical, i know it’s not a big deal, but just something i noticed.

      2. I aso noticed that same for GC. Additional, when she eats, she will close her mouth but she move it vigorously. She will also simply place her cuttlery. Watch d episode that GC is in for Dinner Confidential, u will know what I meant.

    2. My opinion is exactly the opposite.

“I really dislike Grace and all and think she’s one of the ‘worser’ Miss HK in the recent years,…”

      1. She looks conceited and full of herself. She seemed okay when she was in the Miss HK competition. Now she hogs camera time and talks over the other girls at Dinner Confidential. It’s really annoying.

  2. Yea Grace should overdo it by exaggerating. But yet again she beautiful all she needs is the body.

  3. No doubt she’s beautiful, but the way she talks is very…how should I put it?…fake at times. That might be why she comes off as exaggerated.

    1. Where got pretty, no charisma at all.. no boob, no butt.. face too much make up..

  4. She want to be a host really bad and I think she needs to chill out. Be yourself and don’t over do it and take notes from other hosts.

      1. Gosh so OTT..

They were like abusing the food.. Totally not serious about promoting the dishes..

      2. I watched up to 3 minutes and all i can say is, she’s made for show biz.

  5. I don’t think she is exaggerated all her expressions is from her inner personality which is real look at the way she speaks very bubbly, witty and smiley. Maybe some ppl may not like too expressive ppl and they find her very fake then. I don’t think she has pure chinese blood in her so the way of expressions and speaking could be the reasons she is slightly different from the pure chinese personality.

    1. If that’s the case, she’s acting fake all the time. Microexpressions show that she’s totally faking these emotions.

  6. hi there

    1. just give the pretty face and gal some space where she can learn and grow.
    2. honest, gracie is still a new personality.
    3. there are tons of things she needs to sharpen up for the camera.
    4. chin up gal!

  7. She may have a pretty face but she may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Coming back to hosting, not everyone can do hosting jobs, I have not seen her hosting but I can imagine, I dont think I will like that.

  8. It’s her first time hosting a show. Give the girl a break. If she’s been in the industry for a long time and she’s still performing poorly, then okay, go on and give come constructive criticism. But this is not the case. Honestly, you bunch are a mean lot.

  9. if all her expressions are real as she said then i think she is a tomboy,it looks like she tried very hard to be a good host, agree with mt that’s her first time, but to be a good host she needs more skills than only be herself.

  10. #1. First time host so people ought to give her a break.
#2. This girl has a really beautiful face (w make up) so there is some jealousy involved in one form, shape or another
#3. She may never improve. Look at Linda Chung. All these years at tvb and she is still one of the dopiest, exaggerated, playing one annoying character after another and most horrible actresses at the place yet people like her.

  11. I was kinda curious how she was doing as a host so I youtubed her and watched a feel minutes of the show. Haha the show itself is almost sleep-inducing for me, but I can see why some people can see her hosting as somewhat exaggerated. I quite like her and glad TVB is giving her a chance so it’s nice to know that they aren’t shoving her in big hosting programs just yet, but putting her in small-scale programs to hone and develop her skills first.

I don’t watch TVB’s variety shows much and their foods shows never really seem appealing to me. The random episodes that I can recall seeing, yes, the lady hosts are probably a little mindful of how they eat onscreen. I don’t find Grace’s eating unladylike from what I saw and a little tomboy in her might even be good to see. Her whole image, and especially her smile comes off as too perfect, which can be almost robotic at times IMO.

Even though MHK’s might have an image to carry on, it seems like a lot of MHK-turned-actresses can’t wait to get rid of their perfect pageant girl image and want the audience to see them as a real actress. Mandy and Sire come to mind.

I don’t think this exaggeration is really a big deal. If I had to choose between woodenness and exaggeration, I’ll tend to want to see a little exaggeration I assume. Still think she has potential.

    1. She gets all these chances because her parents are loaded and TVB execs are classist dogs. I don’t see other previous MHKs get so much praise from TVB so soon.

  12. I still think she is prettier than the 2nd place winner… w/e her name is… Sisley?

BUT Grace is so fake. You can just tell.
    So over the top.
SO overhyped and over promoted. I bet you $$ it has something to do with her well to do background for her to get some many lucrative opportunities in such a short time.

  13. Imo Priscilla is someone Grace needs to learn from

    1. i think priscilla hosts very naturally, her quirkiness and clumsiness is quite endearing.

  14. She speak too much. So fake. Priscilla is so much better.

  15. I’ve seen an episode of it and Grace was so fake. Her expressions were over the top. While she was eating, she actually licked all 10 of her fingers and went on to touch some other dish. Disgusting!

    1. so much for being a bible thumping Christian… lol

      1. Why? Is it that Christians can’t have poor table manners , or that Christians can’t lick their fingers?
