[STYLE] 50th Golden Horse Film Awards

Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Awards celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 23 and 24 in one of its most elaborate ceremonies. Beloved celebrities such as Brigitte Lin (林青霞) and Maggie Cheung (張曼玉) made rare appearances since their retirement, while other stars made classic statements on the red carpet.

THE STUNNERS

2013 Golden Horse Awards Elie Saaba

Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) and Li Bingbing (李冰冰) both opted for Elie Saab Couture gowns in neutral tones. Carina looked fit to be a queen, while Bingbing’s dress had a more daring silhouette with exquisite beading.

2013 Golden Horse Awards Shu Qi 2

Shu Qi (舒淇) looked divine in a Valentino Couture dress with a plunging front and back. With accessories and makeup kept to a minimum, the dress definitely took centerstage on her body. The lush red velvet teamed with the luxurious brocade skirt easily stole the show that night.

CLASSIC LADIES

2013 Golden Horse Awards Maggie Cheung Kwai Lun Mei

Maggie Cheung (張曼玉) was decked out regally in a dark blue Elie Saab Couture gown. While I give a huge nod to the dress, the jewelry, except the earrings, should all go.

Exuding much elegance, Kwai Lun Mei (桂纶镁) wore an Alexander McQueen slim-fitting white number with embellishments kept to a minimum. The dress gave hugged her body closely and made an alluring statement.

2013 Golden Horse Film Awards Zhang Ziyi Denise Ho

Best actress winner, Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) appeared at the red carpet in a black and white applique dress from Chanel. The dress looked heavy on Ziyi and added unnecessary bulk.

Denise Ho (何韻詩) sported an extremely feminine look in Emilio Pucci, contrary to her normal edgy pant suits. While I love how her posterior looked in the dress, I thought the front was a tad dull. Still, the slinky dress is a win!

2013 Golden Horse Film Awards Amber Kuo

Amber Kuo (郭采潔) looked distinguished and classic in her white ensemble. There is not much to fault about her whole look.

Sonia Sui’s (隋棠) black Giorgio Armani dress was one of my favorites for the night. Sonia managed to look sexy and elegant at the same time.

2013 Golden Horse Film Awards Amy Kwok Joan Chen

Amy Kwok (郭藹明) was dressed in a dull-colored, belted loose gown. Amy dressed in her understated way, but she should have chosen a color which complements her fair skin.

Joan Chen’s (陈冲) dress flattered her, although I wish it were in a more interesting color, like the engine-red which I have long associated her with. And lose the hair clip or attach it on the bun instead.

THE PANT SUIT

2013 Golden Horse Film Awards Sammi Cheng

Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) rocked her Antonio Berardi black suit, which came with a cape. The suit draped Sammi’s figure well and made her look as if she just stepped off the runway.

Vicki Zhao (趙薇) opted for a simple black Marc by Marc Jacobs pant suit. With flowing hair and red lips, Vicki looked gorgeous, but was dressed a bit too casually for the red carpet event.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

2013 Golden Horse Awards Brigitte Lin

It was disappointing to see Brigitte Lin (林青霞) in her busy ensemble.  She would easily be the highlight of the red carpet if she just lost the cape and black gloves.

And last but not least, worthy of a mention here is host Kevin Tsai’s (蔡康永) tribute to the Golden Horse awards. Wacky but he got away with it because he was the host.

  1. Maggie Cheung looks good in just about anything. So envious. Shu Qi’s look was stunning, great color. Vicki Zhao looks radiant even in a simple understated pantsuit. Amber Kuo looks very elegant. And I disagree with writer of this article. I like Amy Kwok’s look. The look suits her well, and she looks very comfortable. Sammy Cheng looked like she was trying to hard.

    1. Agree with your comment on Amy too. She’s with her husband, why would she want to steal his limelight. She’s dressed in a way that compliments Sean and not embarrass, that’s more than anyone could ask for.

Sammy did not look like she was trying too hard mainly because her make up was very light. if she was trying too hard, i would see crazy dramatic make up!

  2. I think 桂纶镁 looks so pretty! I always think she is cute when i first saw her in Secret!

  3. Sammi Cheng rocks mann! Da best! Yea wats with d horse on d guys back there huh u know kinda silly!!

  4. Wish there was a section for the guys too even though they’re mostly dressed in similar suits (ok it’s only because I want to see Eddie Peng).

I love Li Bing Bing’s look, she looked extremely beautiful and elegant.

  5. Eddie peng look really good that night. I really love Maggie’s Dress!

  6. Li Bingbing, Shu Qi, Kwai Lun Mei, Denise Ho, look stunning in their outfits, Maggie Cheung look pretty if without the necklace, Amy Kwok always play safe with her choice of red carpet dress, pretty much same tone all the time, I think her dress is too casual for red carpet. Sammi rocks in that suits, Love her style.

  7. All looked pretty good, not a lot of risks taking fashion, which is good or else it will go totally opposite direction than safe, which is bad.

Li bing bing looked the worst, the gown was pretty, yes, she looked great great but that sheer fabric at the top screamed, tacky, prom, miss america , what made it worst is she looked 2 sizes bigger and i never will use this word on her but she looked fat. Best dressed are Sammi, maggie and shu qi.

    1. Yea kinda agree that although Li Bing Bing grown was gorgeous with the coloring and beading. The silhouette was not very flattering for her. It made her shoulder look very board in comparison to her hips.

  8. The most weird and bizarre award goes to Kevin Tsai’s checkerboard horse. Why can’t they ever get attractive men to host these awards?

  9. I’m really impressed with almost all of them. Seriously cannot pick one that I love the most since each person dressed to their personality.

If I could rock Shu Qi’s dress, I would so wear that!!!!!

    1. pandamao,
Shu Qi’s dress was hard to pull off! But it suits her very well, as she looked young and lively in it.

Elie Saab dresses tend to age the wearer, and while Carina Lau and Li Bingbing look older their ages in the dresses, they were very elegant.

I also liked Amber Kuo’s look very much as well. Understated, simple, and classic.

While Denise Ho looked beautiful, this is not her usual style at all.

  10. i might be the only one who doesn’t like shu qi’s dress. it reminds me of velvet curtains during christmas and it made her look flat.

  11. Like Maggie Cheung’s dress but she’s too skinny and wear too many jewellery. The color of Carina Lau’s dress doesn’t suit her, makes her looks a little washed out. As for Li Bingbing, while I like the skirt, the entire piece somehow makes her looks bigger than she is, which again, isn’t flattering.

Like Kwai Lun Mei’s style most for the night. Next is Shu Qi, followed by Sonia Sui and Amber Kuo.

  12. Love shu qi’s look! Such a difficult dress to pull off yet she looked the best by taking a risk. Next best would be sonia sui and amber. The beaded pieces by carina, bingbing and maggie look good too very safe and look heavy.

  13. I like Ziyi & Sammi. I’m happy Ziyi won Golden Horse Award. But I want Sammi to win & hope she’ll win HK Academy Award next year.

  14. Like ShuQi, Maggie, Kwai Lun Mei, Sonia and SAMMI

Sammi looks like super model there, i don’t think she tried hard, but she looks very confident with her outfit

Zhang Zi yi dress was really a pity for she won that night

  15. Carina Lau/Li Bing-bing

Matronly. Those colors are blah and unflattering. While the diamante applique is painstakingly-beautiful. those 2 dresses looked like they were borrowed from any American award ceremony.

Lin Ching-hsia = matronly, but in a different Mary Poppins way.

Shu-qi = only she can rock this dress with audacity. beautiful color combination, with touch of chinoiserie. top flattens rather than enhances, and borders on the vulgar (though Shu-qi can rock it) as side peekaboo goes beyond ‘suggestive’ but is quite blatant. she wears the dress.

Vicki Zhao = love the shade of hair and her hairdo. effortless, understated chic carried with confidence and a healthy glow. dressy enough for me, with her choice of velvety? texture, without it looking heavy (as can be with some velvet).

Sammi = looking effortful and straight out of a runway modelling catwalk, and some designer’s flight of fancy on Theme Embellishment of couture suit. (aka unwearable and impractical with a hefty price tag … but couturely errm, unique).
it is trying too hard though she is rocking it like a professional model with that hair and make up.

Denise Ho and Sonia Sui = elegant and classy and totally rocking their outfits, and WITHOUT the blah. Denise is also refreshing, considering her normal attire.

Amy Kwok = take away the chain, and it would be blah. but it works (for me) … bec it’s in keeping with her usual understated quiet subtle style.

Amber Kwok = safe, elegant but boring with a color that does nothing for her. with her youth, she can afford to go with something edgier and more exciting.

Zhang Zi-yi = so what if it’s Chanel, what was she thinking?

Joan Chen = nothing unusual. it’s her signature style but her 50s crimped Charleston era hairdo is getting tired.

    Maggie Cheung and Kwan Lun-mei:
Pretty but I expect more from Maggie who normally has an edgier unique style – this is someone who can rock a garbage bag and make it look like a fashion statement.
Prefer Kwan Lun-mei’s to Carina’s + Li Bing-bing. Elegantly sexy, without the matronly.

Kevin Tsai = what was he thinking? Tacky.

  16. Never seen a tackier display of “fashion”. Don’t they even realise that Halloween’s over? Carina looks stern and forbidding and many of the actresses look like they’ve either had tons of botox or plastic surgery done. Shuqi should realise that her s-e-x kitten days are long over but she’s still trying to dress girly-sweet. Sammi’s cape looks like she borrowed it from Batman. Lin Ching Hsia would do well to hire a new stylist and Zhang Ziyi’s gown wld look better if she had gone easy on the busy print. Fashion disaster all around.

  17. My personal favorite was Kwai Lun Mei’s dress, partially because I’m a die hard fan of Alexander McQueen. The pockets contribute to the mix of femininity and masculinity that the dress gives off.

I want to write a review of this particular dress on my blog. Is it alright to copy and edit the photo on this site?

  18. So unexpected that Ms Brigitte Lin would wear that black gloves and that cover veil. She should have worn the gown only and she becomes the star of all. So a waste opportunity to show her brightness.

  19. Very unlucky for Brigitte lin to wear those black globes and the veil in her shoulder. She looks so old in that. Without those, but only the red gown, she will be the best. I dont know who her stylist but surely this make her look like a crazy woman…not the star of all stars anymore… the stylist made a fun of her by adding the black socks in her hands and the red veil in her shoulder…nx time try it first in the mirror and pix….
