Cecilia Liu Stars in Upcoming Wuxia Film “Brotherhood of Blades”

The upcoming wuxia romance Brotherhood of Blades <繡春刀>, which stars mainland Chinese actress Cecilia Liu (劉詩詩) and Taiwanese actor Chang Chen (張震), recently released its first trailer. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on August 7.

Set in the late Ming Dynasty, Brotherhood of Blades tells of three close friends (Chang Chen, Wang Qianyuan 王千源, and Li Dongxue 李東學) who serve as Jinyiwei guards. At the start of the story, they are dispatched by a palace eunuch (Nie Yuan 聶遠) to hunt down Wei Zhongxian (Jin Shijie 金世傑), a eunuch politician who had been forced to resign from his influential post and exiled from Beijing. The Jinyiwei brothers return successfully from their quest, only to find that their task was but the beginning of a strange conspiracy.

Brotherhood of Blades was previously named “Fei Yu Fu Xiu Chun Dao,” referring to a special uniform worn by the Jinyiwei. However, after viewers expressed confusion over the original name, the production cut the film’s official title to the last three characters, “Xiu Chun Dao,” which indicates a dangerous sword used by the Jinyiwei. “It has a very romantic name,” director Lu Yang (路陽) said about the weapon, “but in reality, it is very frightening.”

Director Lu Yang previously won a Golden Rooster Award for Best Directorial Debut for his work on the 2010 film The Spectacular Theatre <盲人電影院>. He is considered part of a group of new-generation directors, which also includes novelists Guo Jingming (郭敬明) and Han Han (韓寒), and actors Deng Chao (鄧超) and Chen Sicheng (陳思誠).

  1. I think Cecilia Liu is better in historical era than in modern days. Watching some eps of BBJQ and find her slow in speech and movements. Maybe she is still trying to portray Ruoxi in the modern drama, but I don’t like it. I’m just watching this as I still haven’t gotten over the Longshi’s romance in BBJX but this drama is far from being as good as the previous one.

    1. That’s exactly how I felt while watching BBJQ! She tries to express something but she always failed to deliver her emotion to the audience. I had to guess how she was feeling or thinking because she was just way too “slow” and completely expressionless.

  2. The colours look good, but I’m getting tired of Jin Yi Wei movies.

  3. It was reported that Chang Chen had to back out of the cast of John Woo’s “The Crossing” because of his marriage last year. Yet he was able to find time to make this movie.

This does not smell right; maybe Woo had wanted to replace him with Huang Xiao Ming for the latter’s marquee value.

  4. Cecilia is getting very popular it seems.. been seeing her in latest drama and movies lately.. which is a good thing.. cause I like her innocent look..haha

  5. Liu Shi Shi is so beautiful. I love watching her drama
