Donnie Yen to Film “Ip Man 3” at the End of the Year

Since its release, the Ip Man <葉問> movie franchise has been wildly successful, grossing as two of the top Chinese movies of all time. Martial arts star, Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) portrayal as Ip Man was highly praised, while his martial arts power captivated and stunned worldwide audiences. To the delight of fans, it was announced earlier that Donnie Yen may be reprising his role as the Wing Chun grandmaster in the upcoming Ip Man 3. Filming was scheduled to start in August 2012.

Based on Ip Man Producer Raymond Wong’s (黃百鳴) preliminary discussions with Donnie Yen and the original cast of the movie franchise, the cast indicated interest in partaking in the third installment.

However, the life blood behind Ip Man, Donnie Yen, was currently busily filming Special Identity <特殊身份>. Afterward, Donnie will be filming The Iceman Cometh 3D <3D急凍奇俠> opposite Daniel Wu (吳彥祖). Donnie will need to complete the current movie projects on hand before he can dedicate time to film Ip Man 3.

While Donnie had expressed interest in exploring other film genres such as comedies, his forte remained in martial arts action films. Practicing martial arts under the guidance of his mother when he was 4 years old in the United States, Donnie later studied with the Beijing Wushu Team.  Perhaps martial arts talent was indeed hereditary in the Yen family, as Donnie’s 4-year-old son, James, also exhibited natural talent. Donnie said with a laugh, “My son, James, never watched [my] movies, but he kicks and punches all day! I do not know where he learned that from!”

Ip Man: The Final Chapter

Since Ip Man was such a popular character in recent years, other Hong Kong directors were eager to capitalize on the subject.  Director Herman Yau (邱禮濤) will be directing Ip Man: The Final Chapter, which is a different film than Donnie Yen’s Ip Man 3. Rising martial arts star, Rose Chan (陳嘉桓) will star in the Ip Man: The Final Chapter.

Director Herman Yau (邱禮濤) has started the pre-production preparations for the filming of Ip Man: The Final Chapter. The Chinese movie will shoot at Xiqiao DreamWorks, China’s second largest filming studio after Hengdian World Studios.  Located in Foshan, Guangdong Province, Xiqiao Dreamworks was the new billion dollar (Yuan) venture which offered movie makers an impressive 8-million square feet filming base, while serving as a theme park to Chinese tourists.

This article was updated on April 6, 2012 to clarify that Donnie Yen’s Ip Man 3 and Herman Yau’s Ip Man: The Final Chapter are two separate films.

  1. I haven’t even seen the second one yet LOL. But the first one was pretty good.

  2. Donnie Yen is absolute the BEST actor to do Ip Man … all those other productions which came out don’t live up the name as much.

But i thought Donnie said he wasn’t filming anymore Ip Man’s after the second one. He changed his mind?

  3. I hope the plot is better than the second one (Rocky 4).

  4. it’s okay to do Ip Man 3 but please not Herman Yau as the director. i dun like his recent movies such as Laughing Gors and Ip Man prequel

  5. Herman Yau does well when he does his own material but he’s a horrible director-for-hire. He has a poor grasp of the source material (i.e Ip Man prequel, Turning Point 1+2). Don’t get why people keep hiring him.

    1. Herman Yau has a great idea for Turning Point 2: Potential Criminal..but the execution is sloppy..The film was not crappy, but it could be much better executed..Perhaps he was supressed by the deadline? Or Shaw Brother’s Limited Resources?

However I do thank the film….for making Co Gor look darkly handsome despite appearing only in a few flashes….slurppp…excuse me……

  6. love ip man movies, Donnie Yen played Ip Man character really good. can’t wait to see Ip Man 3 🙂

  7. Donnie already starting to shoot IP3 and where is the one with Tony Leong in as IPMan?? I have been like waiting for ages for Tony’s version.

    1. Tony’s version will def. be out this year and I suspect maybe it will be out in June/July. Tired of waiting already.

Will most likely watch Ip Man 3, but don’t have high expectations since the 2nd was already only average.

  8. Watched Ip Man 1, he looked frozen. Ip Man 2, as frozen. I suppose Ip Man 3 is the same. Look, this guy’s face is frozen. That’s it.

    1. Funn,
Any comment on Donnie’s martial arts? I think Jet Li’s face is pretty frozen as well. And umm…Jackie Chan acts a bit like a clown in his action movies. But those are not the reasons why they are famous. It’s for their stunts and martial arts agility that makes them awesome.

      1. Jet Li is a better actor, not as frozen and kung fu wise much more beautiful in execution. But Donnie is excellent martial artist, especially in Hero which displayed his true talent but seriously acting wise, which he is doing increasingly, he is just frozen.

Jackie is not much of a better actor. But I never thought Jackie was martial art artist. I see Jet Li and Donnie as true kung fu exponents, Jet Li especially.

      2. Funn,
Jackie Chan was trained foremost as an acrobat under the Peking Opera School. Thus the power behind his stunts.

Jet Li is a national Wushu champion. His older movies were indeed beautiful to watch, as his fluidity had a grace and strength to it that makes it look almost like it is ballet. Jet’s advantage is that his martial arts style is more intricate and elaborate; he looks great with wire work.

Donnie Yen describes himself as a mixed martial artist, in which he combines many styles together. He exerts a very strong sense of power.

I also like Gordon Liu’s Hung Ka style a lot. His old Shaw Brothers films are a joy to watch, real hand to hand combat and no funny angles or wire work.

Chin Siu Ho is also a decent martial artist, but his career never made it big. I also like Vincent Zhao as well. Suffice that I’m a big martial artist fan! 🙂

      3. I prefer Jet Li’s “acting” to Jackie..but I do like Jackie’s earlier films when he was young. He was not a stronger actor to me..but he had this “cute” young fighter charisma.

    2. I think Donnie acted Ip Man well. Donnie usually give the action type feel. But, in p Man, he was convincing as the zen teacher, highly skilled martial artist who also emanate calmness.

      1. Kidd, I feel the same. Personally I feel Donnie conveyed the “zen” and “calm” part nicely.

  9. I wonder which culture will Donnie fight this time?!?!?

  10. Vincent Zhao ran away from 特殊身份 so is Donnie filming his scenes alone now?

  11. Can’t believe people still mixed up ip man series with ip man : the legend begins and ip man: the final chapter! Donnie yen has nothing to do with such ip man : ****** for that is just some copy cat movie by Herman Yau! The cast and production is huge difference as the real ip man series directed by Wilson yip ! So don’t be a fool to believe such lie and editor should do better research and homework before announcing some news!
