51 year-old Nick Cheung Puts Career Before Family

Nick, Esther, and their daughter with former opera star Bak Sheut Sin.

Nick Cheung (張家輝) is an acclaimed actor known to to make any sacrifice for his films.  While this leaves his wife Esther Kwan (關詠荷) to take care of their 11-year-old daughter Brittany primarily, Nick is still a reflective father, who wants to pass on his life experiences to her.

Nick recounts his own childhood, when he had “few chances” to communicate with his parents, “This lack of support made me feel like I had to resolve all challenges myself.” Because of this, the 53-year-old actor is more convinced that as a father he should share his rich life experiences with his daughter, since she would likely have to face them in future too.

Parenting is Sharing Wisdom

In the new movie Integrity <廉政風雲-煙幕> produced by Emperor Pictures, Nick Cheung (張家輝) has many scenes filmed in Australia together with Karena Lam (林嘉欣). As both are parents, the two would exchange many parenting tips. According to Nick, “Karena would share how she educates her daughter. I won’t share as much, as I am still learning how to be a parent and do better.

“I disagree that parenting is about giving the utmost protection; it’s not about wanting her to study specific subjects or to enter a specific career. I hope to share with her my life experiences, how to live better, knowledge about human nature, and how to deal with things…all that she has yet to encounter but which I have already done so. Although she doesn’t understand everything I say now, these advice will come in handy one day. I hope we can be honest with each other, and that she won’t mind sharing problems with me…I’m really glad that she is willing to share about her life with me, (this) makes me feel like I am doing the right thing.”

Puts Career before Family

Despite being a loving husband and father, Nick admits that he puts his career before his family. “To be honest, until now I still put career first. I don’t want to lie to everyone; I always give my all to work. I am keen to explore different themes in my onscreen personas. Because I know these chances are not many now, I hope I can become a director. Beyond movies, I’m interested in few other jobs.” He emphasized his passion, “I am born to do movies and will willingly die for films.”

Nevertheless, the passionate actor talks about the day when he might retire, “I wouldn’t dare say that I will keep shooting films, but if I decide to retire, I will totally withdraw myself from this industry and everything related. If I do retire one day, it will be because I am too old, stop improving, or find myself losing my creative spark, and being stuck at the same place or feeling too tired and bored. When that time comes, I will let go entirely.”

  1. The daughter looks just like her mom and her mom reminds me of Roxina Lin? It sounds like Nick is a hard worker that’s nice to know.
