Aaron Yan No Longer Trusts Easily After Lover’s Betrayal

Aaron blames his own “social laziness” and is now more cautious when making friends.

A member of disbanded Taiwanese pop group Fahrenheit (飛輪海), Aaron Yan (炎亞綸) has been in the industry for almost 15 years. Sharing about what he calls the “biggest stumble in his entertainment career”, he looks back on the three-timing scandal he was embroiled in 2018. A disgruntled ex-boyfriend had leaked Aaron’s photos and accused him of cheating.

Victim of his own“social laziness”

The painful episode exposed Aaron’s sexual orientation to the public, and the once naive star reflected that his habit of easily trusting anyone indiscriminately in the past was part of the reason he got betrayed. As a result, Aaron “no longer trusts people easily”.

Aaron explained, “Socializing involves a lot of proactive and defensive modes. You can’t put down your guard entirely towards others, but I was totally trusting back then.” Recounting how he had been under his company’s protection ever since he entered the industry at 19, Aaron “felt that everyone was kind” back then. Now, Aaron knows that even if he is willing to believe in the kindness of others, he should not outwardly reveal this side of himself as it would only make him vulnerable.

Thinks of Himself More in Relationships Now

While in the past Aaron would be rather selfless in his relationships, he has started thinking more about himself now. “If I had to accompany you today to an activity you enjoy, or go along according to your lifestyle, I won’t really want to accommodate you anymore,” he said.

The biggest lesson he has picked up is to face up to problems instead of running away. “Only if you face up to the matter will you be able to laugh at it one day. That’s the beauty of life.”

Leaving his company after 15 years, Aaron has since set up his own studio and is doing well, impressing with his acting performances in Chinese drama Everybody Stand By <演員請就位> where he had the opportunity to take on challenging roles including that of a blind man and a disabled man, earning praise from acclaimed director Chen Kaige (陳凱歌). “I want to let everyone know that I am serious about acting,” said the 34 year old, who said he would love to take on the role of Joker as he understands the latter’s “desperate smile when faced with continuous setbacks.”

Being his own boss also means he needs to handle financial matters, which he used to loathe, into his own hands – such as learning how taxes work, how to assign wages and whether his employees are paid enough. Receiving many job offers, Aaron already has three drama engagements in the first half of 2020 and intends to produce his own music too.
