Jackie Chan Called Hypocrite for LGBT Ad

Martial arts superstar Jackie Chan (成龍) has been called out as a hypocrite for filming a “Coming Out for Equality” PSA campaign ad for GLAAD, the leading international community in supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights.

The commercial ad, titled “Jackie Chan comes out…” features Jackie literally coming out of a closet after he states the words, “It’s not enough to talk about those fighting for freedom, for equality, until you are one of those fighting.”

The ad was well-received in the foreign and international press, but Jackie was bombarded with criticisms for his hypocrisy by the Hong Kong community. Netizens found it to be “utterly disturbing” and hypocritical that Jackie, who once spoke against democracy and human rights in Hong Kong and China, would come out to support a campaign that entails advocacy for equality.

Labeled as a Communist lover, Jackie sparked backlash when he openly declared the United States to be the “most corrupt [country] in the world” during a television interview for his film, CZ12 <十二生肖>, last year. Jackie enticed further outrage when he went on to say that “[he’s] not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not,” and that Chinese people “[needed] to be controlled.”

Jackie’s GLAAD ad was widely circulated online. Openly gay Hong Kong singer, Anthony Wong (黃耀明), shared the ad on his Facebook account, and wrote, “Will Jackie do the same thing for us in Hong Kong and mainland China?”

    1. So true………he also needs to shut up and learn that anytime a topic requires a person to make comments that even require the slightest bit of intellect,….he’s not qualified………He is only qualified to do stupid and silly stunts in movies that rip-off suckers who would even pay a dime to see his movies……

  1. Jackie Chan is an artist or in the group of celebrities all that concerned is how much the advert pay for his endorsement and putting him in the politic issues are a joke maaan.

  2. Everyone is a hypocrite to a degree though, what is the problem. It’s always the few radicals that step out and complain about every little thing.

    1. I agree with you Pandamao. It is true that everyone is a hypocrite and is bias to some extent.

    2. You have one point of view until you have another. So yes, everyone is a hypocrite at some point. I don’t know how much an ad campaign like this pays, but I would imagine there are better paying jobs tbqh. Maybe Jackie supports LGBT, maybe he doesn’t.

  3. Jackie Chan needs help. Show this clip to the Chinese Communist Leadership into his face.

  4. Well, quite certainly he is not an advocate of people having freedom of speech but he is certainly an advocate for people having freedom to have sex with whoever he or she wants. Maybe innately he is half a leg in the closet (pessimist) or out of closet (optimist).

  5. His English is atrocious to say the least. He pronouced Bird Flu as Burst Flu on another TV ad. He is better off speaking in his native Cantonese.

    1. Do you know how hard it is to kick an accent once it’s set in?

      1. I do. My Japanese accent has twinges of Australian pronunciation. I can’t do the soft “r” sound because I’ve been using the hard “r” (eg. ring) my entire life.

My Mandarin accent has an obvious Cantonese accent to it and I don’t care enough to fix it because I don’t want to talk like I have a shoe in my mouth.

        Ball’s in your court.

    2. He’s better off speaking Cantonese to an English-speaking audience?

  6. This guy will do anything to get publicity. A publicity wh$#&.

  7. At the end of the day he’s bringing awareness to the LGBT community.

    1. Exactly. He may have a lot of faults, but this is actually a good cause.

  8. Because himself is gay . He dates most famous Korean celeb . Hints : Tall, rich family background , Audi r8 , actor as well as singer & model .

  9. Jackie Chan will say whatever to get him the attention he wants. His words don’t mean much at all. Why is anybody still taking this guy seriously?

    1. I agree, he has always been a hypocrite. when he is US, he says they are the best. when he’s in HK, he says HK is the best hahaha.. LOL…

  10. He is a HYPOCRITE for sure. i dont even know why people would get him as a spoke person.

  11. well, how is he contradicting himself? he is arguing for the denial of homophobes’ freedom to bash gays to death.

  12. I don’t see how he is a hypocrite.
I don’t like him or his movies, but to criticize him for this is wrong imo. One is for lbgt equality and the other is for democratic freedoms, while they both may share some similarities, they are most definitely not the same.
Besides, it seems he did it with good intentions and not for publicity.
I don’t think lgbt is too popular in Asian countries. He wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t feel strongly about it even though it’s not a popular feeling in his part of the world. – He would have picked a more popular subject to make a commercial about.
