Wayne Lai More Memorable as a Supporting Actor?

As a three-time TVB Award winning actor, viewers expected Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) to lead the weak cast of Bullet Brain <神探高倫布> to Hong Kong television stardom. Unfortunately, Bullet Brain is the preeminent example in proving that a good actor and a good producer will not guarantee a quality production.

Currently broadcasting on TVB Jade, Bullet Brain, which stars Wayne, Ngo Ka Nin (敖嘉年), Sire Ma (馬賽), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), is universally panned by critics and viewers. Most of the criticism is directed at Bullet Brain’s nonsensical and boring script, as well as Sire Ma’s “cringe-worthy” leading lady performanceBullet Brain also teaches viewers that one should never hold too high an expectation when it comes to TVB and its artists: Wayne, despite being a three-time Best Actor winner, is getting snubbed for delivering an uncharismatic and unenthusiastic performance as the brilliant, assumingly-attractive Columbo. Some viewers are even dubbing Wayne as the “plastic TV King.”

A netizen noted that Wayne delivered better performances as a supporting actor, and this observation was widely supported by many netizens and TVB television-goers. The user cited Wayne’s performance as Tai Chung Man and Tai Chung Mo in The Gentle Crackdown 2 <秀才愛上兵> to be the most unforgettable, exclaiming that his eye-catching performance had completely overshadowed the performance of leading actor, Steven Ma (秀才愛上兵). Wayne’s performance in The Gentle Crackdown 2 ultimately won him Best Supporting Actor award at the TVB Anniversary Awards in 2008. Even Wayne’s unrelated role in the first The Gentle Crackdown <秀才遇著兵> series, Sze Kei Wong, was spectacular and enduring.

Other memorable performances include Wayne’s supporting gig as the engaging Cheung Ah Long – known as “Cockroach” – in the 1990 TVB serial The Challenge of Life <人在邊緣>, as the effeminate Roman Tam in 1997’s Show Time Blues <樂壇插班生>, as the handsome Brother Ngai in 1997’s A Road and a Will <香港人在廣州>, and, most famously, as Zhu Bajie in 1996’s A Journey to the West <西遊記>.

Some netizens were also beginning to question Wayne’s star power. Wayne’s award-winning performances in Rosy Business <巾幗梟雄>, No Regrets <巾幗梟雄之義海豪情>, and The Confidant <大太監>, were supported by well-known costars Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯), Michelle Yim (米雪), and Maggie Shiu (邵美琪). The popular Forensic Heroes 3 <法證先鋒III>, critically-acclaimed The Greatness of a Hero <盛世仁傑>, and the well-accepted King Maker <造王者> had Maggie Cheung Ho Yee (張可頤) and Kent Cheng (鄭則士) as Wayne’s costars.

As a result, fans of the highly popular Rosy Business franchise are worried for Wayne’s No Reserve <巾幗梟雄之諜血長天>, the third installment of the Rosy Business series. Without Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) in the scene, would Wayne be able to hold an epic drama entirely on his own?

  1. Absolute rubbish. Not even the best leading actor of any generation could make Bullet Brain any good. In fact how can a series have the lead actor in coma for some and dumb for most? The entire series fails because of writing AND Sire Ma who proves she is NOT leading material. Wayne was exceedingly memorable in Rosy Business. He was great in many series, leading or otherwise. He is the prove that not even the best actor can make a crappy script good.

    1. “As a result, fans of the highly popular Rosy Business franchise are worried for Wayne’s No Reserve , the third installment of the Rosy Business series. Without Sheren Tang in the scene, would Wayne be able to hold an epic drama entirely on his own?”

Wow! What a way to preempt any blame on Myolie or the script.

    2. Come on, Sire Ma’s performance is alright. Her character is annoying and people tend to just dislike her because of that.

      1. I disagree. Yes her character is annoying unfortunately she can’t be the standalone actor in one scene. She can’t command that sort of attention. The problem is too much screentime for her character when the 2 main ones just disappeared. Perhaps Pierre or Wayne were both injured and had to sit out of filming for a few weeks?

      2. No, Sire Ma is awful, she needs to go back to TVB Acting Training Program ASAP.

    3. I couldn’t agree more. No actor can save this show. it has one of the worst script.
I just hope the storyline for RB3 will be good. Although I don’t like that pairing.

  2. This is nonsense. It’s not his fault that this drama fails. I actually find his performance to be good.

    1. I agree 100%; his role in this series is very difficult but he delivered well and i don’t think there are any current lead actors of TVB are able to carry this role better than him. Please be fair when making comments and appreciate the effort he has put in the series. With a very weak cast and no famous female lead but the rating is better than “season of love” and “The days of Days” this is proved that he is a best leading actors in all time.

      1. No comments on Wayne’s performance cos’ I’ve quit watching the series after 5 episodes but you be fair too to the two series you picked to compare ratings with. It has already been brought to your attention that “season of love” was aired in a graveyard timeslot, as was “The days of Days”.

      2. I agree with you too. Not anyone can perform this type of character.

      3. @ Mocha, there are people from TVB can take Wayne’s role.

    2. It is partly his fault. His performance was subpar throughout the series.

      1. Come’on, Wayne in this series did not have that much screen time at all. Most of the screen time is towards Sire Ma (poor acting) and edwin siu.

      2. but the first 10 eps were cringe. it is partly his fault.

      3. Wayne only become bearable in the show when he is “dai hei”.

He is HORRIBLE as Columbo. Unwatchable.

      4. Wayne only become bearable in the show when he is “dai hei”.

He is HORRIBLE as Columbo. Unwatchable.
        ———————————————————-
Totally agree. I don’t think Wayne has the face or acting to carry the image of the brilliant Columbo Ko.

      5. Disagree that Wayne Lai’s performance is subpar in the series. Him and Ngo Ka Nin both acted well in the series and it’s part of the reason I keep watching.

      6. I would love to read a review of Wayne Lai’s performance by yourself Larry 3, it seems you know it all.

  3. the guy is three time tvb king and now concerns surfacing that he doesnt have the star power to hold on his own.?? really? Well first of all rosy business and confidant had sherren and michelle yim. Sherren at that time, dare i say, was not quite popular at that time as she was always casted the third leading role among the other leading actress. Michelle yim is a highly respectable as a top actress but is not the attraction star to watch. Rosy business 3 has myolie right, i guess shes not big time? after all I mean Wish and Switch, and season of love did poorly too. Maybe Kenneth is not good either

Sorry a top popular star does not guarantee huge ratings. And the star should not be fully responsible for it.

    1. Actually Wayne got a lot of harsh criticisms too from netizens on baidu and hK discussion forum for his Lau Sing in No Regrets and his Pro Sir in Forensic Heroes III too, just that theirs did not get reported then.

    2. love your comment. Top Stars does not guarantee high rating

    3. Sherren at that time, dare i say, was not quite popular at that time as she was always casted the third leading role among the other leading actress.
      ——————————————
Don’t agree. Sheren Tang is well-known for her good acting. She did so well in Yu Fei’s character in “War & Beauty”, and there were a lot of noises saying that Sheren should have got Best Actress award instead of Gigi Lai. Sheren was always a lead actress after 2004, and not as a 3rd leading actress as you mentioned.

  4. I find Pierre Ngo’s performance quite good. Don’t think is Wayne’s fault but the storyline itself is quite boring. And agree that sire ma is really not a very good actress.

  5. I think the problem lies with the storyline of the drama. They’re just actors delivering what’s written on the script. Once it’s rubbish, it’s rubbish. How can you “beautify” rubbish. Though, I anticipated Sheren’s scenes in no regrets and rosy business more than Wayne’s, now to think of it. She was so cool. Anyway, give Wayne a good drama to lead, he’ll show you he can do it well.

  6. After reading all the reviews about Bullet Brains and Beauty of War, I decided to skip both dramas. Honestly not interested.

    1. Most people seemed to have done the same. Can’t believe Beauty at War and Bullet Brain only averaged 23 points each. Interestingly I don’t see any reports about Moses, Sheren, Ada, and Christine not being able to draw. BAW has the four of them, yet it can’t even surpass BB which only has Wayne. The cast of both these shows are not the problem, the script is.

      1. BB is just horrible. Wayne just cannot carry Columbo. He is fine as dai hei

  7. “The user cited Wayne’s performance as Tai Chung Man and Tai Chung Mo in The Gentle Crackdown 2 to be the most unforgettable, exclaiming that his eye-catching performance had completely overshadowed the performance of leading actor, Steven Ma (秀才愛上兵). Wayne’s performance in The Gentle Crackdown 2 ultimately won him Best Supporting Actor award at the TVB Anniversary Awards in 2008. Even Wayne’s unrelated role in the first The Gentle Crackdown series, Sze Kei Wong, was spectacular and enduring.”

I sincerely loved Wayne’s performance in TGC2. He did stole the drama from the leads.

  8. wayne is a good actor no matter if he is lead or supporting role, but he is a little bit too old now for lead roles and seeing his face for so many years i want to see some fresh faces,so tvb have to promote more new talent, search and find some new tony leung or andy lau instead using the same actors for lead roles till they become grandpa.

  9. It’s not that Wayne Lai is plastic, its just that the script is horrible, how can Wayne Lai work with that?

    -cheers-

    1. I don’t know what plastic mean for this, but HK people should stop complaining on petty things and stop nitpicking . Again horrible scriptwritter

  10. I haven’t watched this yet but every picture of this Wayne Lai of this series, he looks really old????

      1. I know right, apparently NOT. He looks ok in other series but on the pics of this series, he looks really dark and old.

    1. Because he is playing a role who has a mental problem by a traumatic accident caused by a bullet in his brain he must be makeup to be older and uglier than he is to make the role reasonable; has anyone seen any crazy patient to be good looking?

      1. He is supposed to be suave. But he is anything but suave.

  11. He had many memorable performances as both a supporting and leading actor, but not every role is perfectly suited for him. Wayne is just in a higher status which also comes with a lot more criticisms.

Also I notice that when someone is considered an “underdog”, people complain that they should be a lead. When they become lead, then people complain that they should go back to supporting. 😛

  12. It is not Wayne’s performance that ruined the drama, it is the stupid scriptwriter and Sire Ma’s acting that destroyed this series. There’s no doubt towards Wayne’s acting. But I don’t see all TVB siu sang and fa dan is good in acting. Seriously, most of the young ones, their acting is poor and not convincing at all.

  13. As well, War and Beauty 2 is having the same situation, then should Sheren go back to become a supporting actress. I think not, HK people just love to complain. Nothing can satisfy them.

    1. Not only Sheren Tang, but also Ada Choi, Moses Chan, etc.

However, it is still too early to make a conclusion yet since “Beauty at War” is a palace-setting drama series with a lot of characters, unlike the very few characters in “Bullet Brain”. 17 episodes of BB have already been aired and if the storyline is no good and the cast can’t act, it is the end of the drama series.

      1. It’s over when one shot in the head. The other fall off from the second level. They went straight to coma. Lots of crazy nut heads. One actress can not act well. The scriptwriter botch up the story. The producer is making the worst decisions ever.

        Like a downward spiral, endless….

  14. I’m actually not surprised that Wayne is getting such criticisms because honestly, there are a lot of people out there who can’t differentiate between the acting and the script for one, and two, I think people forget that even the best actors/actresses in the world will have a few works in their portfolio that don’t live up to  expectations.  I mean, just look at Chow Yun Fat – I’m sure no one will contest how great an actor he is, but look at how many box office ‘flops’ he had in his career?  Just because not all of his movies did well, does that mean that he’s suddenly a terrible actor?  I’m sure all of us can think of many examples (both from the movie and TV world in HK and Hollywood) like this.

Just as another example  — one that’s probably a little more relevant – take another 3 time TVB Best Actor (aka TV King):  Gallen Lo….back when he made his comeback, he received a lot of harsh criticism for that stupid Dog and Cat series too as well as for that trainwreck of a series Born Rich (both of which appears to have done a number on his career because even today, I still see a lot of harsh comments about him in forums and such) – but does that mean he suddenly became a bad actor and we should place all the blame for a series’ failure on him?  This may sound harsh, but people who think like that are too narrow-minded – it takes more than one actor/actress to make / break a series….most of the time, there are multiple factors involved that contribute to why a series fails (and it’s not always because of the acting).

    1. Chow Chun Fat was not good in ancient drama series or wuxi ones when he was in TVB. He was very successful in modern drama series, but he sucked in ancient wuxi drama series. He could not fight or do kung fu. He was acting a character similar to “Chor Lau Heung” many years ago, he sucked and had a lot of criticisms.

My conclusion is: every artiste has his/her strength and weakness and may not excel in every role no matter he/she is a 3-time TV King/Queen or 3-Time Movie King/Queen.

      1. Sandcherry, exactly! But why are you then generalising Wayne to say he is horrible? In his case the problem is the script! If the script is ok but he is not, maybe but the script is crap. Who on earth would put 2 main characters in coma, brain damaged, etc for so many episodes and depend on 1 female actress who is untested and when tested crumbled like a cookie and then other characters that deviates from the main characters?

      2. I think the character you refer to is ‘Ling Wu Chung’ from ‘Smiling Proud Wandering’.

      3. @sandcherry:  That’s my point exactly – Chow Yun Fat did indeed receive a lot of criticisms back when he portrayed LingHu Chong in Smiling Proud Wanderer and it’s true that he wasn’t suited for the role at all (he basically wasn’t suited for ancient series back then period), but again, the question is – just because he had one badly received series, does that make him a bad actor?  My opinion may not count for much, but when it comes to determining whether someone can be classified as a ‘good’ or ‘great’ actor, one thing (amongst many) that I look at is consistency – it’s unfair to discount an artist’s track record of great performances (which is essentially what people are doing when they make comments such as ‘so and so is a horrible actor’ and ‘a particular series’ failure is all because of the person’s horrible acting’) just because one or two particular performances may not be to our liking (especially since we all know that a lot of times, the way the script is written plays a huge part as well, so it’s not always just the acting).  Like you pointed out, every actor/actress has their strengths and weaknesses and as long as they are human beings like the rest of us, they won’t be ‘perfect’ creatures who do the job ‘perfectly’ every single time.

I agree with Funn — it’s unfair to make generalizations about an artist’s acting based off of one or two performances…especially experienced artists who have a long list of performances in their portfolios and who have proven to us time and again that they have what it takes.  Basically, what I’m trying to say is this:  yes, the series Bullet Brain sucks, but the reason it sucks is because of a combination of factors, with a poorly written script being first and foremost.  Sure, Wayne’s acting may not be the best in BB (though I would not go so far as to say he ‘sucked’ because that’s such a baseless, ignorant generalization to make), but so what?  Doesn’t make him any less of an actor in my eyes, especially given his consistent track record.  To me, those who feel the need to ‘discount’ Wayne as an actor merely because of one lousy series are looking at things through a haters’ mindset rather than the mindset of a rational critic.

      4. Hi people, I am not saying that Wayne Lai is a bad actor. I just said that he did not act well as Columbo Ko in “Bullet Brain”. It was NOT his strength to act a brilliant and smart Columbo. However, Wayne did very well as Ko Dai Hei. I agree that the storyline was not good either.

What I wanted to say is: Every artiste has his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and he/she will excel in the character which requires his strength, and shows off badly his/her weaknesses if the character does not suit him/her. This applies to any artistes, including Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung, Stephen Chow, Leung Ka Fai, Cheung Ka Fai, Gallen Lo, Wayne Lai, etc. Of course, some are better than others.

  15. Also, the people are criticizing on the plot and not Wayne’s acting, so there’s nothing wrong with Wayne’s performance. People need to know how to differentiate between them.

    1. There’s nothing wrong with Wayne’s performance? Re-watch the series again.

There is something wrong… even with the crap pile script.

      1. you should re-watch the series again. I can see the problem with Sire Ma, but not wayne

      2. I did watch it. I agree Sire Ma sucks so bad in this series, she needs to go back to TVB artists boot camp.

Wayne also suck in this series as well and I can list every one of the bad parts of his role but its not really worth with this crap ship series. But here some major points… He acted way over the top, over acted, can’t control the emotions, bad facial expression, etc.

      3. Why don’t you go into full details and explain how he should have portrayed his character? It’s easy to ridicule someone but prove your points please. Don’t just give half ass criticism and show only your over-blown hatred for an actor.

      4. @ GMessiah: You are so up type. I have already explain the reasons why Wayne suck so bad IN THIS SERIES. Not other series. THIS SERIES only. Go back and read through the Bullet Brain articles in this site for your own sake.

    2. @Larry 3
Have you ever seen any patient with mental disorder be able to control their emotion and action? Wayne is playing as a crazy person that he need to act like that. He is really professional in this role.

      1. Vann, if he is a pro, why are people not praising him on this series?

      2. He is not crazy all the time. You sound crazy now with the way you are defending him

He can act, but not all role. And this is definitely not for him. He cannot be Columbo, he can be Dai Hei

      3. Absolutely agree. Wayne did a lot of similar roles like Dai Hei in his acting career, but not a single one as a brilliant Columbo Ko. Moreover, his acting is not that great. If he is super good, he should be able to do it.

      4. Please name a person who had played a brilliant Columbo Ko? No one. So what standard are you using in your judgement?

      5. Gallen Lo, Bowie Lam, Roger Kwok, Kevin Cheng, Moses Chan, etc. and etc. I think any one of these actors would be better than Wayne Lai. At least they wouldn’t scream and yell so much in the drama series.

      6. @Sandcherry: I believe Felix Wong, Nick Cheung or Bowie Lam might have done a better job than Wayne in portraying the role. I am not fully convinced that Moses can handle this role.

  16. Wayne is becoming a supporting character in Bullet Brain. There’s too much screen time of Sire Ma and Edwin. That’s why it’s ruining it.

  17. I really want to ask those stupid netizens, if Wayne did not film this drama, who else can perform this character and can bring it back to life? Raymond Lam???(not), Kevin Cheng??(not). I really cannot think of anyone who can perform as good as Wayne.

    1. We have this discussion before, few weeks back… I nominated Roger Kwok.

      1. I don’t think so. Roger can’t even save this drama

  18. Like everyone here, I totally agree with the fact that NO ACTOR can save this series ass from burning! It sucked so much, it’s seriously horrible to stomach! And it’s not Wayne’s fault. In fact, if it wasn’t for him, this series will flop even more, geez… Are those viewers who commented such nonsense know how to differentiate between bad script and bad acting, or are they just haters of Wayne???

Btw, Sire Ma should stick to supporting roles. She id terrible in this series.

    1. You have read mine mind. If there’s no Wayne in this series, it will be much worse.

    2. the series did flop further with Wayne… in the beginning.

Wayne is a great actor. He is a mis-cast in this sloppy ship series.

      1. It will flop even further with other Siu Sung in Wayne’s role. The scriptwriter is horrible, just horrible

      2. Similar to what llwy12 was saying, scriptwriters also have times when they do not live up to the viewers’ expectations. I do not believe that this scriptwriter who wrote Bullet Brain is horrible. I believe that this series was hard to develop in the first place. This scriptwriter (葉廣蔭) also co-wrote the scripts for 白发魔女传, 西遊記, 日月神劍. Looking back at his scriptwriting records, I believe that this was the first modern ancient series he wrote on his own, which may not have been his best. I think you guys should loosen up a bit and see what happens since Pierre (one of the actors in Bullet Brain) did say that Wayne and his scenes has not been shown yet and that it was a heavily-developed scenes (something among those lines)

      3. The head scriptwriter left in 1997 and came back in 2012, 16 years MIA. Yes his work is EXCELLENT back then. BUT, this series is complete RUBBISH. It is horrible, the story is train wreck from the start til now as of right now. I wont be surprise if the ratings will hit below 20 points.

      4. I am now afraid Rosy Business 3 series if it turns out similar approach then Bullet in the Rotten Brian. The same head scriptwriter, producer and the lead actor. A triple threat.

      5. @Larry3:
If you look closely at HIS works, you will see it’s collaborated scripts with other scriptwriters. You NEED to recognize that THIS may be the FIRST series that HE WROTE ON HIS OWN, which means it won’t the best. But surely, everyone would learn from this attempt.

He had no other scriptwriters except for himself! Everything’s different when you have more than 1 scriptwriters.

      6. The head scriptwriter should have enough experience in the past regardless if he is co-author or by himself to write the series. I wont let him a pass. This is totally UNACCEPTABLE, a low bar for TVB viewers.

      7. The head scriptwriter should have enough experience in the past regardless if he is co-author or by himself to write the series. I wont let him a pass. This is totally UNACCEPTABLE, a low bar for TVB viewers.

^ I don’t think it was head scriptwriter. Why aren’t you willing to let him pass?
        He was trying something new.

      8. If he is trying a new style, by all means do it. I have no problem with it. BUT, it has to be top notch.

In this case, it was absolute full of GARBAGE. Lee Tim Sing and the head scriptwirter should have notice this crap in the first place when they edit and final prep before shipping it out.

They are the leaders in the production, why should let them a pass when I saw with my own eyes like Detective Coloumbo said… “RUBBISH!”

      9. If he is trying a new style, by all means do it. I have no problem with it. BUT, it has to be top notch.

In this case, it was absolute full of GARBAGE. Lee Tim Sing and the head scriptwirter should have notice this crap in the first place when they edit and final prep before shipping it out.

^ Let me ask you this, have you ever tried something new? It may be crap to you. However, it does not mean it was crap to the producer and the scriptwriter. I think you’re too early on judging this drama. It has only been the first to second week.. Maybe, it will get better near the end of the week T_T

      10. Lily, you are confusing. Re-read my comment over again. Since YOU have not watch this series, Seriously.

      11. “Since YOU have not watch this series, ”
^ How would you know that I did not watch the drama itself? All I’m saying is.. they may have a crappy start, but it may get better? Is it a crime to be hopeful that things will get better, as promised by two actors who knows whats going to happen in the series?

      12. Tell me Lily, where in this series has gotten better? If there is hope… Can you hope for the better. Not in this series.

      13. I do not dare to guess what is going to happen next, but I am hopeful because TWO ACTORS have pointed that the heavily-developed dramas has not been shown yet, which means that it would get better.

  19. Ratings in Episode 11-15 23 points. It is bad. TVB do something.

    1. Move the remaining episodes to late night or weekend hours ASAP.

    2. The lowest rating in that week was 20 points and its not even Summer vacation or a holiday.

      TVB you did fabulous

  20. I suppose Wayne will be supporting Myolie in RB3, LOL.

3 time TV king himself can’t save a bad script with bad supporting cast or perhaps Wayne is just overrated.

Find it funny why ppl complain but still watch this, haha…

    1. Being a 3 time TVB king is pretty telling in itself.

It’s pretty much the plot of “Billy Madison” with Adam Sandler. Especially the part where he decimates the 5 year old kids in dodgeball because, well, he’s like 30.

  21. The storyline was too boring for me to tune in. But now I’m just curious about the acting skills of Sire Ma, just to see what the criticisms is all about.

  22. Gallen Lo is the only one who can carry a mediocre drama or a castings of mediocre actors!
Born Rich was a lousy drama but Gallen’s performance lifted up the pace especially the last episode
When A Dog Loves A cat made Myolie Wu looks like novice but once again Gallen Lo carried the drama well

  23. Wow! Everyone seems to be have very big reaction towards this series. I like to add my opinion.

Firstly, this is a beyond-reality kind of story, so if things are illogical, it does not matter. it is still a story. Example Inspector Columbo flying in the air?, injured in the brain but never got dead and then became a super hero??? It is totally beyond reality! But it does not matter because the story is created in such a way. I think it’s absolutely fine.

However, the plot was a little slow moving. I am comparing it with . Being a palace=costume drama, i thought The Confidant was very well plotted, it was quick in its plot. It’s snappy! Also I am comparing to the , again being a costume drama, it was quick and snappy. The conversation among the casts was interesting. So Bullet Brain may lack of these elements…i thought but it is not entirely bad. The cinematography of this series is beautiful.

As for Wayne’s acting, I do not think there is anything wrong. There are many scenes that really show his great acting…eg, when he was first came to HK to pay the last respect to his father (see his crying…it was not exaggerating, while he was in the nightclub dancing…being seduced by the girl, when he was leading the police force to march). I guess his character as Ko Da Hei is much to our liking than his character as Columbo. Again this is the requirement of the script.

Well, as for Sire Ma…i think she is ok, pretty good but i dont see her stealing the lead lady role. In fact I dont see any female lead in this.

I do not think Wayne should be accountable for the high and low of a series, although he is the limelight (due to his status). Although he is over-rated by the public, he has always been in a low profile status. The success of a series is determined by many factors, as acting is a team work not the lead cast alone.

Last but not least, Wayne has definitely brought many good memories to us viewers with his string of unforgettable significant roles over the many past years even before he became popular. He is indeed a very hardworking actor who worked his way to deserve our recognition. Not only he is hardworking, he is definitely a passionate actor who hold strong to his stand and determination to make acting his long time career. To be honest, we have truly enjoyed his performance so far and proud of his success. However, nothing is permanent…we can only wish his Best of Everything. I am looking forward to Rosy Business 3!

  24. combination of bad female lead and bad storyline and don’t make wayne scout free either, this is one of his worse work. he exaggerated as both roles and his way of acting really remind people of chai gau in rosy business. One trick pony?

  25. What a terrible series, it should get cancel.

On another note, I saw the first eps of war at beauty, another disaster. The first part sounds like they had to dub the parts.

Storyline is back and forth. TVB is going down.

  26. will be sad if wayne has to rely on and overshadowed by myolie and edwin in rosy business 3 which should be one of the four important series. hope wayne won’t use the same tricks again or else can’t help but really think he’s starting to become one trick pony. can’t blame netizens for liking wayne better as supporting because back then he was more versatile.

    1. I have some serious concerns on Rosy Business III, we have virtually the same players: Lead actor, lead producer, lead scriptwriter, Edwin, SIRE MA…. if its the similar setup… TVB is doomed again.

I hope TVB FIX the mistakes before releasing out for RB3.

      1. I wouldn’t be worried. RB3 is currently filming now and all of them know how the audience has reacted to BB. They would be stupid to not make changes to RB3 if its anything like BB.

      2. They better know NOW. I mean it is a POTENTIAL disaster if they keep this crap up. It is not a joke. I want TVB to do better. I want all the artist and the production crew to be the best of the best.

        IMPRESS ME TVB!

They are NOT as of last year.

I still do have concerns, unfortunately 🙁

  27. Most remarkable works of Wayne so far is RB n NR IMO! Yea most memorable!

    1. But d thing is I hope “Chai Kau”s identity should long b buried.

  28. Larry,
Please going back to read Funn lim’s episode thought and you will see Funn really appreciated Wayne’s acting and not only Funn, there were a lot viewers say that Wayne’s performance is good and the low rating is not his fault. If Wayne will not be assigned anymore as a leading actor i think that will be a big loss for TVB and the audiences.

      1. You are one selfish, despicable person, Larry3. Even if the producer or the scripwriter has made a mistake, you are quick to judge. Not willing to give it another chance.

      2. Lily. Im telling the TRUTH. I have given many chances to this series. Episode by Episode… it suck. This series is now in WEEK 4. Where have you been?

        Have you watch the series???????

Im no selfish, despicable person. You can’t be that naive.

      3. Lily. There is no need to make personal attack. Just like you, larry also has his right to put his opinion here.

      4. Lily. Im telling the TRUTH. I have given many chances to this series. Episode by Episode… it suck. This series is now in WEEK 4. Where have you been?

        Have you watch the series???????

Im no selfish, despicable person. You can’t be that naive.
^ No, you’re the one who is naive.
        episode 16/25…

      5. It dosent matter to me, Their feelings are hurt or something else….because Im telling the truth.

      6. What about episode 16 out of 25… something different from other episode?

      7. “, Their feelings are hurt or something else….because Im telling the truth.”
        ^ Proof that you’re inconsiderate.
Your truth= OPINION. NOT THE WHOLE TRUTH. I’m sorry but tvb does not serve you.

      8. I think you need to LOOK past the bad acting, the bad story in what they’re trying to say.

      9. No, you face it.
You are insane, inconsiderate, selfish, despicable person who does not believe in second chances. I thought the first episode was interesting.. 😛

But for you, it must been such a “crappy” episode.

      10. Lily, dont be MAD, be HAPPY. You taking way too seriously to put up against me.

      11. “Lily, dont be MAD, be HAPPY. You taking way too seriously to put up against me.”
Bull crap. you’re insane and so weird.

      12. “I think you need to LOOK past the bad acting, the bad story in what they’re trying to say.”

Lily. You are funny. Hehe Even you admit that the series is quite bad.

      13. ““I think you need to LOOK past the bad acting, the bad story in what they’re trying to say.””

        Oh i think you misunderstood!
In some dramas, there may be actors who are new. I’m saying that even if there are
“bad acting” according to you, “poor storywriting” to you guys, you have to look past. :p

      14. Ok Lily. I think I understand how you think. But when I consider a movie to be good or bad is largely based on the story line and the actors’ ability to make their characters believable or not.

After all, it is a movie and if it’s not judged by its story, producers, actors performance then what should it be judged by?

      15. Lily. But I’m happy for you that you find the series entertaining. Because at least you got something to look forward to watch every night.
For me. I have watch american series and wait for a new tvb series to be launched after the bullet brain.

      16. “Ok Lily. I think I understand how you think. But when I consider a movie to be good or bad is largely based on the story line and the actors’ ability to make their characters believable or not.”

^ Excuse me, is that how you watch Titanic/A walk to remember/ disney ?

And also, you should take back your comment because:
        1) I also live in the Americas.
        2) I don’t tend to watch tvb series on tv, rather online. I am not like Larry 3, who has time to watch every single episode.
        3) Who said that I have been following Bullet Brain closely? Where in the world did I say it’s entertaining?

      17. I just finished watching the first episode. I think it’s the format that might have made this drama boring/poor/bad. I saw it as a refreshing, interesting drama. I think the first bit was his success as Detective Columbo and now the producer/scriptwriter wanted to film his process in becoming the Detective. It is similar in how the Drive of Life was filmed where they showed the ending and then began the story.

It’s too bad that you guys don’t appreciate it.

      18. Lily, if have not watch the series regularly then watch it and don’t get so work up with it!

      19. YES! That is how every audience would base their opinion on any movie!

And another thing, I do not take back anything that I believe is right!

And I will also add another comment to you Miss Lily. You are as illogical as Sir ma in Bullet brain.

      20. Lily, if have not watch the series regularly then watch it and don’t get so work up with it!
^ Don’t tell me what to do, mr. i-gave-chances-to-this-series. I agree with what Lisa said. It’s a SHAME that you think so lowly of it, maybe it’s due to you being 小人.

      21. YES! That is how every audience would base their opinion on any movie!

And another thing, I do not take back anything that I believe is right!
^ Mmm interesting. You are as illogical as well. You are also a 小人.

      22. Lily, stop changing your avatar and your handle. We can see your acting.

      23. Lily, stop changing your avatar and your handle. We can see your acting.
^ There could be multiple Lily’s.. Hence different avatars.

      24. No, it is part of childish game play by Lily. A very stupid game.

        Don’t be a fool. 🙂

      25. Childish? Fool?
Larry, i feel that you are quick to judge. Do you have proof that it’s not three different Lily’s? Jaynestars has lots of viewers coming from all over the world. So if there could be multiple people with the same first and last name, it is possible that there are three different Lily’s.

      26. @ Teresa, obviously YOU dont even see the comments clearly. Look at them. Lily… Lisa, same avatar. Lily’s comments are the same Lily comments with different avatar.

Please stay in school and read books.

      27. Lily. I appreciate your thoughts and comments. And I will also take your advice and see pass through your name calling and still believe you to be a nice girl behind this screen.

      28. @ Teresa, obviously YOU dont even see the comments clearly. Look at them. Lily… Lisa, same avatar. Lily’s comments are the same Lily comments with different avatar.

Please stay in school and read books.

^ Why would I want to waste time looking at pathetic comments made by two people who obviously have different opinions? I find it pointless to go through all this. Although I like to make a point, Lily did have a good point saying that you’re quick to judge.

And X: You shouldn’t really say those words unless you really mean it, instead of fooling around with Lily.

      29. You know what Teresa or Lily, keep changing your username since it is YOU. The writing style is the same.

        Stay in school, please.

      30. Theresa aka lily. As I said before I mean every word I say.

      31. Please enlighten me. What does school have to do with all this ?

      32. Theresa aka lily. As I said before I mean every word I say.
        ^ sure… empty words, much?

      33. It means, dont play hide and seek and act like stupid by changing your username. Plus you stay on the same writing style post by post. I have clear vision.

Keep it up with the shenanigans.

    1. You also make no sense.
you claimed that I should stay in school. However, all you say is that ” dont play hide and seek and act like stupid by changing your username. Plus you stay on the same writing style post by post. I have clear vision”. Except that itself has nothing to do with school or reading novels at all.

      1. The first and second episode reminds me of the book Flowers for Algernon. :S

      2. I personally think that this is a mix of Flowers for Algernon and a bit of Gun Metal Grey.

    2. Acting is very subjective. Funn may like Wayne Lai’s acting, but it does not mean that everyone supports Wayne’s acting in “Bullet Brain”. I think you should take majority of the comments to see if Wayne’s acting is good or not in “BB”.

      1. I agree with what you said. I am currently watching the second episode. But from what I’m seeing, I think the format of the drama is refreshing since it’s not telling you all the details, rather it’s showing how Wayne’s character became who he is. Well, that’s just my first impression after watching the first episode.

  29. People may have tuned in because of Wayne in the beginning. I for one was not high on the series and only watched it for Wayne. After the first couple episodes, Wayne wasn’t even shown much anymore. He was stuck in a coma for several episodes. Just look at today’s episode. Wayne only appeared once and he was in a coma again. If they expect Wayne to lead the cast, at least give him some screen time. At this point I think Sire Ma and Edwin Siu have more scene time than Wayne. It’s a flop because the plot is incoherent and it’s main attraction is in a coma for half the episodes.

    1. tell me about it. in coma for a few days at least find better actors as supporting.

  30. Sire Ma is still need alot of improvement
in her acting before she can be the lead
actress. She spoilt the whole drama. Now everyone stopped watching because of her.

  31. I remember LOVING Wayne in Devil’s Disciples and Moonlight Resonance. Those were my favorite roles of his, espicially him in Devils Disciples

  32. No comments on Wayne’s acting in BT as I have not watched the series. But I must say that Wayne truly delivered many spectacular performances as a supporting actor. In fact, I liked him much more when he was playing second lead – like in Safe Guards, Gentle Crackdown. Those performances were more memorable than when he led in Rosy Business.

  33. It takes too long talking about Bullet Brain; let’s go to another topic to discuss.

  34. I agree. Honestly I didn’t see what the hype was for rosy business or the big eunuch. The whole chai goi and gou nainai thing was a bit much for me…I felt like his acting has become more over exaggerated over the years. A solid actor he is, but I don’t really watch the series when he is the main actor unless there is someone else in the cast that interests me…ie. michelle yim, sheren tang, etc.

  35. I must agree that I find wayne’s performance much better when he was supporting actor.

    1. I find Wayne acting is great, it is because main lead are very different from supporting characters, which they have more freedom compared to main leads. Since main lead is the central character, he has constraints, which I think that one of the cons of being a lead.

  36. Oh great. Wayne finally woke up from his coma and now he is in coma again. I don’t blame him. I would be in coma too if I had to be in that series.

    1. Again? How many times the 2 main characters must be in coma?! What is this series doing? Angry, fighting, shooting, suicide, coma, wake up, coma, wake up in that order?

  37. I would love to see Sire Ma outtakes. Im not so sure if TVB post the Bloopers clips online. There is lots of rough editing from Sire Ma’s scenes. Did she really BOMB it that badly?

    1. Name one actor/actress who has not experienced any outtakes or editing. As for me, it is normal that an actor/actress needed to do a NG. Of course, too much outtakes isn’t a good thing but as a viewer, we wouldn’t know which scenes has been heavily edited or has been outtake a lot.

      1. Im focusing on Sire Ma only….don’t care other actors…I want to see if she did the take good or not. Typically TVB put out bloopers if the ratings are SKYROCKETED.

  38. i agree wayne is more memorable as a supporting actor, but then so are a lot of people. tvb’s scriptwriters only know how to write interesting supporting characters while leads are normally always too good, too perfect and plain boring.

like many have said, it doesn’t matter who is the lead in columbo – the story sucks. i am a huge lf and charmaine fan but i couldn’t bring myself to watch “My Sister of Eternal Flower” nor “Men with No Shadows”. for me, the main appeal of a series is the story. cast is secondary.

  39. People who said that Wayne is over acted in the role of Columbo are no nothing about behavior disorder. Learn something about mental disorder before having comments. This is my last comment because i am not interested to discus with people having limited knowledge and bias.

    1. First of all, keep on commenting. If there is something that YOU need to say… go right away.

Second. SERIOUSLY, do the people who watch Bullet Brain expect to know mental disorder, behavioral disorder???? So I have to go to school and study it?
Why don’t the story tell the audience that Wayne’s character had that disorder… which it ready presented in this story.

The viewers already know Wayne’s character had this condition.

THE MAJOR PROBLEM is his performance is absolutely SUCK. The transition between these two characters play by Wayne he acted very very unconvincing over top. In some parts of the series, he over did his emotions. Etc, Etc….

If you can’t understand this comment, then just ignore it. You can not ignore the fact people do not agree with your assessment.

      1. Ha ha ………. I agree with your comments “THE MAJOR PROBLEM is his performance is absolutely SUCK. The transition between these two characters played by Wayne he acted very very unconvincing over top. In some parts of the series, he over did his emotions. ”

We all know that Detective Columbo Ko had mental problems in the drama series because of the bullet chip left in his brain, but his performance only showed us that he was a crazy person, and not a brilliant person. Was he supposed to be a brilliant detective with a IQ score of 283 as per character description or just a person with mental disorder? A good actor should be able to convince us that Detective Columbo Ko is brilliant, smart, but weird, cold, selfish and self-centred.

      2. Here are Detective Columbo Ko’s character descriptions as per “Bullet Brain” website:

        “他的激活腦細胞進化,大喜保住性命之餘,智商飈升至283,擁有驚人記憶力,通曉各國語言,精研多門專科;同時間,大喜亦變得衰格無倫,自私無情!”

  40. On a lighter note, am I the only one who loves his role as Chu Pak Gai in JTTW? That’s the first time I fell for his great acting and also the super naturalness in his acting, walaaaa….he was also great in Safe Guards, Gentle Crackdown and many more.

Anyway, I watched that RB3 trailer during the sales presentation. Myolie Wu style was a joke, and her role as a spy holding that gun like that? Another joke. I think it’s gonna fail before it starts.

    1. I too have deep concerns on Rosy Business III, they are filming now. The story has too be very different form the installments. TVB can not afford a ratings loss.

      1. I think they should just separate Rosy Business III and name it differently.

      2. No, TVB won’t do that. They like milking the name to death for viewers sake.

      3. I agree with Bubblez. They should just separate RB III from this because they have nothing related to each other, LOL.

      4. The story is not related at all, but the series tile that TVB keeps using it is WINNING! Its been a trend for TVB.

  41. Wayne did well in Rosy Business as male lead. But yes, he’s too late to bloom…His younger years in TVB contains lots of ‘extra’ & supporting roles. Just remembered his supporting role as Leon Lai’s buddy in Challenge of Life and as Pigsy in Journey To The West.

  42. Lets make some note here. Ever since Wayne won best actor, he’s evolved from Wayne the actor to Wayne the “brand”. It’s obvious he and his wife (who’s also his manager) is trying to cash in on his new found fame. It’s less about his acting and more about chasing advertising dollars. He has pretty much sold out.

  43. He looked like he is so derived of sleep.

    His eye bags. OMG!
