With 2 films recent films, The Last Tycoon <大上海> and Young and the Dangerous: Reloaded <古惑仔之江湖新秩序> capturing the spotlight, director Wong Jing (王晶) has already set his sights on his next project. He plans to purchase the rights to TVB’s War and Beauty <金枝慾孽 > to shoot a movie version.

Inspired by the success of the mainland drama, Legend of Zhen Huan <后宫·甄嬛传>, Wong Jing believes there is a market for a film version of War and Beauty. “The mainland drama was shot very well with great attention to detail. I think there is potential to do even more with a script like War and Beauty. Since I have a good relationship with TVB, I don’t think there is a problem when I approach them about purchasing the rights.”

Wong Jing continued, “Mainland China has banned filming of any sort in the Forbidden City for the next several years, so there will be a deficiency in these type of films. Thankfully the ban only applies to television and not the big screen.”

On the “Young and Dangerous” Gang

The director is known for building the film careers Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健) and Jordan Chan (陳小春) through the Young and Dangerous film franchise. In recent years, Wong Jing found the most potential in Him Law (羅仲謙). “Him can play both the protagonist and the villain, so he is a very versatile actor, just like Jordan Chan. Whereas Ekin can only play a good guy.” Regarding public criticism towards Him, Wong Jing brushed it off, “Ekin faced a lot of criticism when we first cast him as a big brother in the original Young and Dangerous film because people didn’t feel like he was right for the role. In the end, he carried out the role of big brother very well!”

Comparing Him to Ekin, Wong Jing only had praise for the up and coming actor. “Him’s personality is a very good fit for this industry. He’s more open-minded and assertive than Ekin, who was like a kid that needed to be pushed and motivated.”

Wong Jing praised the new crop of actors that have potential to make it big in the industry. “Sammy Shum (沈震軒) is able to leave a different impression on viewers, and does not lose out to Francis Ng (吳鎮宇). I also think that Philip Ng (伍允龍) was the most outstanding for the role in all versions. Philip’s body is very muscular and beautiful, as beautiful as Bruce Lee (李小龍).”

Wong Jing admitted that he had cast muscular young men in Young and Dangerous: Reloaded to lure female audiences. “Women are lustful too! Sammy Shum and Winnie Leung’s (梁敏儀) love scene was explosive, very explosive!”

    Natalie,
Wong Jing only produced the first YnD. He had no creative input into it since it was written by Manfred Wong who himself had adapted it from a comic. The director duties were overseen by Andrew Lau (Wai Keung).

So to say Wong Jing built both Ekin and Jordan is a stretch.

Oh puhlease @ Him’s so-called versatility. The guy alternates between being stiff or OTT. As for his body, total butterface.

And IDk what he’s talking about regarding Ekin. Maybe Ekin just can’t be a villain in your shitty movies?!

Another movie and director with no substance. Ekin is better than Him. Isn’t he so bias for saying crap about the original cast? It didn’t do so well in the box office even adding on those intense scenes?

The picture above is really bad. He looks like a pervy old grandpa. Lol.

Wonder what other movie/series will be ruined cause of his uncreative imagination? CYFs classics?

I think Wong Jing had lost his touch with movies a long time ago, or maybe it was the stars like CYF, Stephen Chow, Maggie Cheung, Sharla Cheung, etc.. who made the classics and not his material.

WJ’s TV series are not all that bad cos he is confined within broadcasting guidelines but his movies get too unrestrained. To make up for lack of depth in the plot, he replaces it with nudity and violence. Even if he wants to make a Cat 3 version, at least get some actresses who look sexy and can act as well, like Chingmy Yau. Otherwise, I hope TVB doesn’t sell him the rights.
