Exploding with Popularity, G.E.M. Expected to Earn 20 Million in First Half of 2014

With her powerful vocals, catchy songs, and musical talent, 22-year-old G.E.M. (鄧紫棋) has managed to accumulate many fans from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Southeast Asia. But despite her growing popularity throughout the Asian region, G.E.M. never really managed to successfully break into the lucrative mainland Chinese market in the six years she has been in the industry until now.

After performing as a regular on the popular mainland Chinese reality singing competition I Am A Singer 2 <我是歌手 2> in early January, G.E.M. began to achieve recognition in mainland China as one of the show’s strongest competitors after she clinched first place in a recent episode. Exploding with popularity, G.E.M. has surpassed 3 million followers on Weibo, most of which are from mainland China.

Job Offers Increase

G.E.M.’s increasing popularity in mainland China has garnered her a few lucrative job offers, including a performance with the main cast members of the popular variety show Where Are We Going, Dad? <爸爸去哪儿> for Hunan TV’s 2014 New Year Gala. In addition, it has been reported that she renewed her Maybelline endorsement contract for an alleged 1.5 million RMB. Coca Cola, Mengiu, a makeup brand, and a car company are also reportedly interested in featuring G.E.M. in their commercial ads.

Production companies have sent G.E.M. over ten different movie scripts, all offering to feature her as their lead star. G.E.M.’s last acting gig was in the 2009 film Trick or Cheat <愛出貓>, in which she starred alongside William Chan (陳偉霆). Several Hollywood films also reached out to G.E.M., asking her to sing the Chinese versions of their films’ theme songs. G.E.M. was offered to be featured in a Hollywood film last year, but management has been considering the offer carefully since they must take her image into account.

G.E.M. is expected to earn an additional 12 million RMB through her upcoming world tour, which includes stops in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Foshan, Canada, the United States, and Malaysia, totaling 21 shows.

In a recent phone interview, G.E.M. confirmed her appearance on Hunan TV’s New Year Gala. “I will be singing my Mandarin song ‘Oh Boy’. It’s my first time doing such a big show for the Spring Festival, but I will not feel too nervous about it. It’s more important to stay happy in the new year.”

Not Interested in Acting

G.E.M. also confirmed that she was given many acting offers, but said, “I’m more interested in singing theme songs. Acting is not my duty. Music is my duty. Unless I come upon a script that is related to music, like Beyonce’s Dream Girls, then I’ll definitely say yes.”

The Shanghai-born singer added that she is not interested in filming doing romantic movies, exclaiming that she finds the romantic atmosphere on a film set very awkward. “If it has kissing, bed scenes, or whatever, don’t count me in! Only professional actors would be able to successfully perform them without holding back. Having me on set would just be a waste of everyone’s time. I’m more interested in occasionally guest starring in comedies.” On which actor she wishes to work with, G.E.M. immediately said Daniel Wu (吳彥祖). “He’s very charismatic, but he’s quite funny. I never expected that.”

Expected to earn over 20 million RMB in 2014, G.E.M. did not deny the news reports. She said, “I’m afraid that I won’t have time for everything. I actually don’t know how much I earn. My mom takes care of my money, but money is hard to earn, and it is worth it to invest your career.”

    1. Ya i think jenny might be jealouz because she was known as the ‘little big lungs’ during her time ..now obivously GEM took the title:-)

    2. Funny thing is… do we know for certain that if GEM had walked over to her and interrupted her conversation Jenny wouldn’t have complained about the “rudeness of youth who interrupt their elders when they are talking”? Divas tend to be like that….

  7. HK is so lucky to have her. She has pure talent. I heard her sing without a mic before and I was totally blown away by her voice. She’s only 2 years younger than me! (and earning more money than me XD) She has a bright future ahead of her.
