Fred Cheng Almost Made the Producer Cry in the Recording Studios

Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘) impressed the judges and the audience with his soulful voice in last year’s The Voice of the Stars <星夢傳奇> singing competition, becoming 2013’s biggest breakout star. The 30-year-old Canadian-born singer, one of the first stars to sign with TVB Music Limited’s subsidiary record label Voice Entertainment, is currently busy in the studios to record his debut album.

In a rush to meet the deadline of his album launch, which was originally slated for a summer 2014 release, Fred said most of his days are spent in the studio to recording songs. In an interview for RTHK, Fred shared some interesting tidbits of his recording experience.

Fred revealed that there will be a few love songs in his new album. While recording one of them, Fred said the album producer is very particular about emotional vocal performances. Before recording the song, the producer told Fred to recall a heartbreaking love relationship he experienced in the past. The producer gave Fred time to think and helped him recall the memories by turning off all the studio lights.

“I wore my headphones, thought about it, and memories of my first love when I was still in school all came back to me. It made me feel very sad, and then the producer played the music track and I immediately started to sing. After finishing the song, the producer told me that I almost moved him to tears.”

After completing the recording, Fred said he felt very depressed for a while. “But at the same time, I have also managed to bring out the correct feeling of the song, and that sense of accomplishment is satisfying!”

  1. Fred always sings from his heart and puts a lot of emotion and passion into each song, really admire him for that. wish him good luck and success for his album!! 😀

  2. haha, reading the title without reading the story had me thinking that his singing was so bad till it made the producer so angry

  3. The title made me think he gave the producer a hard time or something lol

  4. Yay! Can’t wait for Fred’s debut album — definitely will be buying it!

Based on the latest news, Fred’s album will be released in September. Then after that, in November, he will get to have his very first concert (no, it won’t be at the HK Coliseum, though I’m sure he’ll get the chance in the very near future..) — he will be holding his concert at the International Trade Center in Kowloon Bay. Not sure if there will be any guests at his concert, though he did say that he would love to invite his idol Jacky Cheung and his mentor Eric Moo.

Anyway, very happy for Fred, both with his upcoming album release as well as first concert!

    1. wooohoooo! SUPER excited for him! i’m sure it will be a great success!

    2. Debut album and debut concert at the same time? Hmm… is it a mini-concert or a full one. I guest a mini one because a debut album is not enough for a full one.

      1. Mini-concert in that it is only 1 show, though his record company has said that there is the possibility of adding more shows depending on reaction from audiences.

      2. If it isnt a mini-concert, he cannot have enough songs of his own to sing.

      3. it will just be a mini concert. he may only have one album, but he has his own band and has written quite a handful of songs with his bandmates who i believe will definitely be performing as well. so he should have plenty to sing.

he will probably sing some of his music heroes’ songs like eric clapton, jimmy hendrix…etc.

  5. Is he that great of a singer? Honestly I don’t find any singers nowadays qualified to be a superstar like those days like the late Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. I feel the entertainment industry is getting easier to penetrate into by just joining any singing competition. Fame is so easy to obtain nowadays, therefore popularity is short lived. This is so sad…it’s happening everywhere even in Hollywood.

    1. Fred’s singing is ordinary, his voice is ordinary, his looks are ordinary and his stage presence is ordinary. People just love the story of the underdog made good and his story is one of them. I remember him tearing as he related his past struggles on the intro segment of the Voices competition. People were touched by it and began rooting for him. It was a lucky break or he’d still just be a 3rd 4th line TVB actor.

    2. Of course if you’re going to compare him to the likes of superstars such as Anita, Leslie, Jacky, etc., Fred definitely pales in comparisons — but then again, it’s not just him….90% of the singers in today’s music industry pale in comparisons to the great singers of past generations.

Hey, I miss the HK music industry of the 80s and 90s (the generation I grew up in) just as much as the next person, but unfortunately the industry is already too far gone to ever be able to reclaim any of its former glamour. Fred may not be one of the best, but amongst the younger generation, he’s already one of the better ones…I would rather support him than some of the current generation of singers in the industry….

      1. agree! fred has a lot of room to improve and cannot compare to the kings and queens of the 80s and 90s, but he is definitely one of the better ones in the current generation!

  6. I listened to the one theme song he sang for the tvb drama and I have to say his singing is not very good. His voice is kinda lacking.

    1. Yup the theme song for The Ultimate Addiction sung by him was so bleh!

      1. I agreed, this voice is not mesmerizing like wong kit, jacky cheung,

      2. Oh wow, I didn’t know he sang Ultimate Addiction’s theme song! It was horrible, and I really thought it was Bosco’s singing. I remember saying how Bosco should just stick with acting.

  7. yes he sang theme song for Ultimate Addiction and Ghost Dragon of Cold Mountain, i think it is good voices

    1. ghost dragon og cold mountain is totally awesome… the song, the singer, the actors, actresses, characters, a great fit!

black heart white soul…. some really fake scenes…. like when fire went to hit partner’s house to ask for money and killed him…. poorly played out….

  8. Fred has such an ordinary voice and face. Dont understand how on earth he got the Sexiest man alive 2014 award.

    1. Agree! I’m scratching me head, too. And the above pictures is definitely not sexy. LOL!

      1. agree with you both. The “sexiness” of Fred just baffles me especially with that pic.
