Mandopop singer Yoga Lin (林宥嘉) announced on March 5, 2014 that he will be enlisting in Taiwan’s military in the latter half of the year. At a press conference in Taipei to promote his upcoming concert tour Speaking in Tongues <口的形狀>, Yoga calmly stated that he will be taking a hiatus from the music industry soon after the tour ends in the latter half of the year in order to fulfill his mandatory enlistment obligations.
The 26-year-old singer explained that he had always wanted to serve in the army since his youth, and he credited his idol Jimmy Lin (林志穎) for being his inspiration. Yoga mentioned that he recently met Jimmy at a variety show recording, which contributed to his decision to enlist as soon as possible. “I am not that excited for getting a buzz cut though,” Yoga laughed. He does not have a preference on a particularly military unit to serve in.
Hong Kong songstress G.E.M. (鄧紫棋), who dated Yoga for three years, recently posted an ambiguous message on her Weibo blog, suggesting that she was going through some relationship troubles. With Yoga’s sudden declaration of enlistment, rumors say that Yoga only decided to enlist after G.E.M. broke up with him.
Yoga denied it, saying, “My staff and I have been discussing about my enlistment for some time already.” However, Yoga did not deny the breakup claims, and even implied at his press conference that the two have already gone their separate ways. He said, “Everyone has their own lifestyles. I look forward to [her] future and I will give [her] my greatest support and blessings. Everyone has a life that is perfect in his or her own way, and we should all chose the life that we are comfortable with.”
