Despite TVB’s grand plans in marketing the 40th Anniversary of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant this year, the 14 contestants have come under fire as being poor in quality. When the bikini photos of the contestants were unveiled earlier this week, Hong Kong tabloids criticized the contestants for their flat chests and flabby abdomens. Director Wong Jing (王晶) blasted TVB, “If there are no [hot] women, then do not organize the pageant!”

  1. wow – reading comprehension fail on my part – I kept on reading the title as “2012 Miss Hong Kong Candidates Revealed 29 Pregnant”!!!

    1. I think she looks like Ivy Chen (Taiwanese actress).

  2. Elaine Tsang looks like a young Marianne Chan, she’s the most beautiful of the contestants, imo.

Cindy Yeung looks cute, like her dimple!

  3. Hilary Tam won Miss Chinese Toronto in 2010 and then went to Miss Chinese International last year, if she wins Miss HK does that mean she can go to Miss Chinese International again?

    1. I can recognize Hilary Tam’s name and face. She is pretty, and I hope she will do well in both competitions (if allowed).

  4. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that Hilary Tam was in this year’s 2012 Miss Chinese International as a contestant already hailing from Toronto but she lost out to Kelly Cheung from Chicago.
Guess she decided to give pageants another try as she is now a MHK contestant. Good luck to her!

    1. I think you are right. Unfortunately, TVB did not host one in 2011, so all the contestants of 2 years had to compete in the same competition in early 2012. Of course, the chance was not as good.

Good luck to Hilary Tam from Toronto.

  5. I guess Miss HK 2011 was really the last beautiful goddesses quality pageant.

    EEeeeeeeeeeeWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…..

  6. 29 is such an odd number. Why dont they add another one?

    1. i think they originally decided on 30 girls but probably one of them dropped out or something

  7. BTW, any idea of this year’s pageant going to be held? I hope its not TVB studio again!

  8. so far my faves are wingto lam and gloria chan. teehee liked them since interview. theyre both so cute! others there are a few that are not bad too. hope to see them in the finals!

  9. oh yea christy chan is cute too.
look at a photo of her on miss hong kong diary’s facebook page with long hair. “cute version” christine kuo

  10. alycia chan and carat cheung both competed in vancouver pageants. same with hilary for toronto.

although they can’t be faulted for persistence but it would be refreshing to see new faces as contestants rather than losers or runner ups of their hometowns.

    1. I don’t understand why the magazines wrote carat is 23 this year when she is born in 1987.

  11. I think the age limit of Miss Hong Kong has now been raised to something like 27. Even some losers from their hometown competitions can try again. In fact, losers in one competition can be winners in another because they are more experienced in pageant shows, e.g. Aimee Chan and Janet Chow (they both lost in Chinese Toronto Pageant Show), but they were winners of Miss Hong Kong the year after.

  12. Christy Chan for me. (Her face also resembles someone else in the e-circle, but I can’t quite put my finger on who…)

Vivien Tse looks a little like a cross between Joey Yung + Fan Bing Bing to me. Not my cup of tea.

  13. Some of my early favorites are Wingto Lam,Elaine Tsang, and Roxanne Tong!!

  14. Some looks very good. I like Gloria Chan, Carat Cheung, Melaine McAndrew, Ivana Wong and Nicki Wong. Roxanne Tong also looks good. Christy Chan is a cute girl.

  15. i like this idea. that means i get to chase-watch miss hk pageant every weekend! just like how i follow america’s next top model and bachelor/ette etc. nice!

  16. christy chan and gloria chan reminds me of ‘hear me’: michelle chen and ivy chen

  17. im surprised that Serena didnt make it through

    1. Yea, she had way too much plastic surgery as we can all see… She looked like a live plastic doll just like Viann.

  18. I think overall they are a good looking bunch. That is, one or two are more exceptional and one or two are quite questionable. haha.

  19. vivien tse and xaviera yau LOL how did they get through?

  20. I think Roxanne Tong is already quite pretty, even with a makeover, her look probably would’t change dramatically. Elaine Tsang looks quite sweet. I think Carat Cheung is a dark horse, but I’ve already heard the Hong Kong media calling her a hot favourite.

  21. My favourite ones are: Jenny Leung, Hilary Tam, and Cindy Yeung.

  22. Basically for girls they’re pretty but for miss HK quality, as in a beauty pageant, none of them stood out for me. But since this is an exercise to find new potential fa-dans, I see a few memorable faces and some do look like past actresses.

    1. Even until now, Im still moaning how come hong kong doesnt have any good looking young females? Where are they now? Why and how come they don’t participate this MHK? Isn’t this a prestigious enough events to impress them and give them opportunity to shine their beauty?

Why MHK contest has to rely on such pork chop as Chan Ting Yan to promote Hong Kong? She doesn’t even know how to smile. Her smile and presentation are very much terrible than yu molin (as I could see from her cooking show with Samantha Khoo) yet TVB treats her like an angel and promotes her like a princess? What a joke?

      1. The good looking ones have all become models.

  23. Hmm based on pics, I like Roxanne, Jenny, Hilary, Elaine, and Ivana. not to be mean, but I wonder how Vivien got in -_-

  24. My top 3 in no specific order based from these photos:
    1. Wingto Lam
    2. Roxanne Tong
    3. Carat Cheung

A lot of them are not pretty enough to be in a beauty pageeant, so hopefully they will look more presentable after their makeovers.

  25. My top 3 are Melanie MacAndrew, Roxanne Tong and Ivana Wong, all good looking!

  26. Due to unbelievably superb high tech plastic surgery involves, it’s very difficult for these participants to go thru detected. Hence using eyes and ears to judge whether a contestant qualify to earn the winning title are rarely sufficiet.

I propose the beauty judgement system to be upgraded/improved to include HANDs (physical touch by judges) so that only deserving, daring and naturally born beautiful pageants are qualified.

  27. Hilary Tam’s look is too common but I have a feeling that she will get in the top three, she is not my favaourite can’t stand her face.

    1. I guess “beauty” is something very subjective. It is very hard to have consensus.

I personally like Hilary Tam, but you think her look is too common. Will see …..

  28. Based on these pics, my favourites so far are:

    – Roxanne Tong
    – Wingto Lam
    – Ivana Wong

But sometimes, people look really different onscreen from their pics…so I’m looking forward to seeing them more this summer! 🙂

  29. They not very good looking.
The only one I think is OK is Christy Chan, she remind me of Myole Wu

  30. My Top 3
    1. Roxanne Tong
    2. Jenny Leung
    3. Xaviera Yau

  31. roxanne and wingto looks ready for the industry.

  32. Looks like Roxanne might get it, she looks pretty good to be in the industry.

  33. Agree of all, Roxanne looks right for the industry!

  34. Yeah but in fact it does seems like Roxanne did get a nose job, or a nose injection to alter her nosee bridge. That kind of treatment can be done in London where she lived so she might have done it before she flew back to HK.

    1. Carat has done treatments to her nose, “shaved her jaw line”, chin, and removal of the fat under her eyes. If you see her old photos, she is a different person!

      1. Do you have an old photo of Carat? Would love to see it. Was she one of the contestants in Vancouver Chinese competition in 2011?

She is pretty in her photo here.

      2. I remember Carat from Miss Chinese Vancouver a couple years back… I think she looks the same.

  35. Judging purely by these photos, I am going to choose: Jenny Leung, Christy Chan and Burmie Wong. But its hard to choose without listening to them speak or watching them perform… 🙂

    1. Looking at the photos on the tvb site, I’ll add Elaine to that 🙂

Also – Alycia reminds me of Yuri Chan.

  36. This is really off-topic but I’m reminded again about dentures from the photographs and am genuinely curious! How can they have such perfect teeth? Are they all or most of them complete/ partial dentures?

    1. Jenjen:
You must be outdated. Almost every youngster has perfect teeth these days, especially if they plan to participate in beauty contests. Haven’t you heard of “orthodontics” in Dentistry?

Having perfect teeth nowadays is not that impossible.

      1. Apart from braces (orthodontics) though, what if some of them didn’t have “nicer” teeth to begin with so they had to have dentures? Okay I can see where this is gonna go now lol so sorry for the lame conversation I came up with in the first place.

  37. hmmm nthng strikes me a extraordinary…standards hve really gne down

    1. Agree. No one is extremely pretty this year. Personally I only found a few of them up to standards, and probably they will be winners!

  38. OK bloggers, which of the lookers have talent and poise?

  39. Can’t believe that only TVBFanatic mentioned Penelope so obviously girls view beauty different than guys 😀

She seems very natural i.e light makeup and elegant.

Other girls that I like include Nicki and Elaine.

  40. you guy must have not seen Jenny Leung in real photos…she’s cross eyed.. and she won 2nd in Vancouver Pageant coz there’s more to it..not because she deserves it..

    I think Roxanne will win!

  41. Looking at the pictures, I don’t think the contestants are that bad in quality. There are many beautiful ones among the 29. I personally find the following good looking.

    Christy Chan
    Alycia Chan
    Traccy Chu
    Jessica Kan
Cindy Yeung – looks like JJ Jia
    Levia Lee
    Melaine McAndrew
    Roxanne Tong
Cynthia Tsang – looks like Christy Chung
    Vivian Tse
    Nicki Wong
    Ivana Wong
    Xaviera Yau

Some are not conventionally good looking, but, I find their look have character such as Vivien Tse.

    1. Left out the biggest photo, Wingto Lam. :p

      Add her to my list.

  42. where is the plastic Serena there? No sign of her..probably got kicked for having too much of PS.

I think Roxanne Tong may stand a chance to get into the TOP 5 OR 3..
