Anthony Wong is the Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild

Seven awards were handed out at the 30th Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild, which was held on March 10th. Anthony Wong (黃秋生) won Best Actor for his performance in Still Human <淪落人>, a down-to-earth story about a paralyzed Hong Kong man and his Filipino domestic worker.

“When I heard my name downstage, I felt the shivers,” said Anthony. The 57-year-old actor said he was beyond excited and honored to have won an acting award at the directors’ guild, saying, “There’s so much variety when it comes to directors, so to know that there is at least one out there who approves you, is hard to come by. Directors are the hardest to please in the universe, so to win this award in front of so many different directors, I regard that as a life achievement.” Upon seeing that Hong Kong’s chief executive, Carrie Lam (林鄭月娥), was also in the audience, Anthony thanked the government for supporting the film industry. “If an industry has enough power, it wouldn’t need support from other platforms, but the film business here definitely needs more support, especially for the industry’s younger generation.”

There was, however, one person Anthony forgot to thank.

“It’s my wife,” he said. Anthony and Jane Ng (吳惠貞) have been married since 1992. The couple have two sons together. “I am thankful for her patience after all these years. I am never home and have always gone missing because I am always preoccupied with preparing the emotional roller coasters of my characters. She’s had it hard!”

Anthony admitted that his work has interfered with his family life, and that he and his wife rarely spend time together.

Asking if his win has boosted his confidence of winning the Hong Kong Film Award’s Best Actor, he said, “I’ll take it as it comes. I don’t want to think too much about it.”

    1. @anon Yup, Agreed! Congrats again to Anthony!

I actually think the odds are high for Anthony to win HKFA Best Actor as well, since he has already bagged a few best actor awards for the role (less than a week earlier, he already won the HK Film Critics Society best actor award). Still Human is a good film so glad to see it getting the accolades it deserves!
