Bae Suzy’s Challenging New Role

South Korean video streaming service Coupang Play has announced a new drama, Anna, starring actress and singer Bae Suzy!

Premiering in 2022, the cast also includes Jung Eun Chae, Kim Jun Han and Park Ye Young, with Suzy taking on an inscrutable role which is “very different” from her previous characters in Architecture 101 and Start-Up — a habitual liar who will “eventually loses her sense of self”.

Helmed by director Joo Young Lee of 2017’s A Single Rider, who will take on both screenwriting and directing this time, she revealed, “Anna tells the story of telling lies to make up for a sense of deprivation, which ends up in losing a sense of identity and a part of your life.”

Manifesting the Ripley Syndrome, Bae Suzy’s character Yoo Mi starts off by telling minor lies, but these little spin tales morph into her version of reality, and she ends up living the life of another. Adding tension to the plot and facing off from Yoo Mi is Hyun Joo (Jung Eun Chae), someone who neither has malicious intent nor empathetic feelings, but enjoys a comfortable lifestyle in her own glass castle.

Kim Jun Han will play Yoo Mi’s husband Ji Hoon, some who with great ambition who aspires towards checking off the parameters of the “good life,” while Park Ye Young will portray Yoo Mi’s senior Ji Won, the only person she trusts.

Besides the interesting story, the director of Korea’s Coupang Play added that Suzy’s vastly different onscreen persona from her previous roles will be a huge anticipation for fans, and is likely to make the drama a buzzworthy watch.
