Jet Li Counters Charity Fraud Accustations Against One Foundation

A Mainland political commentary website recently accused Jet Li‘s (李連杰) charity, One Foundation <壹基金>, of embezzling 300 million RMB in donated funds. The group pointed out that One Foundation received more than 385 million RMB in the aftermath of 2013’s Ya’an earthquake, but had thus far spent only 47 million RMB on relief efforts.

One Foundation was established by Jet Li and partner organizations to provide disaster relief and prevention services. After the devastating earthquake that shook Ya’an on April 20, 2013, the charity received immense support and was able to send over 1000 volunteers to assist with search and rescue efforts. The foundation continued to participate in resettlement endeavors, and has recently released a report listing their contributions to date to ensure transparency.

One Foundation’s secretary general Yang Peng (杨鹏) responded to the accusation on April 23. Yang explained that in addition to relief supplies, a portion of the fund also goes to operating expenses needed to keep the charity running. He also noted that it will take time to spend the funds since some of the more major projects, such as plans to rebuild five local schools, require long-term planning before execution. Lastly, Yang argued that One Foundation aims to provide quality services, which includes the use of advanced technology. He urged those who are concerned to have patience, and re-iterated that the money is being put into good use.

Jet Li also denied the fraud accusations with a Weibo post on April 23. He joked that he really would love to embezzle the 300 million donation, but unfortunately does not have the authority within the organization to sign the money over to his own bank account. He also pointed out that every executive officer of One Foundation already owns companies worth tens of billions, lamenting, “To embezzle this 300 million, how do you split it evenly among them? It is not enough!”
