Kenneth Ma Plays Doctor 13 Times in 20 Years

About to film two more medical dramas this year, Kenneth Ma (馬國明) has frequently played a doctor in dramas over the past two decades at TVB. Including his roles in the upcoming Big White Duel 2 <白色強人 2> and Children’s Hospital <兒童醫院>, it would be his 13th time portraying a doctor.

After graduating from TVB’s artiste training class in 1999, Kenneth only began receiving major recognition after his breakthrough in The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時> in 2012 as Doctor Cheung Yat Kin. Although he did not win Best Actor for his performance, his character was extremely popular among viewers. Impressing critics and viewers as a cardiothoracic surgeon in Big White Duel <白色強人>, Kenneth finally won his well-deserved TV King title.

Besides reprising his role in the upcoming sequel, Big White Duel 2, Kenneth will be playing a pediatrician – his 13th doctor role, in Children’s Hospital. From playing medical officers in historical dramas to modern-day physicians, it is no wonder some viewers previously confused Kenneth for being an actual doctor.

Although Kenneth only appeared as supporting characters, he played a physician in historical dramas, The Herbalist’s Manual <本草藥王> and Gods of Honor <封神榜>.  Long-time fans may also have noticed Kenneth as a doctor in Golden Faith <流金歲月> although he had little screen time.  He was an obstetrician in A Matter of Customs <雷霆第一關>, a general practitioner in Ups and Downs <無業樓民>, a psychiatrist in My Dearly Sinful Mind <心理追兇 Mind Hunter>, and a pediatrician in The Last Breakthrough <天涯俠醫>. He also played physicians in The White Flame <紅衣手記>, In the Realm of Success <公私戀事多> and Country Spirit <酒是故鄉醇> as well.

  1. TVB stereotyping? Lol I actually prefer Kenneth in mischievous roles, he actually have pretty good comedic timing. Also, he should do more villainous roles, like in The Other Truth and Tiger Cubs.

There’s a guy who’s a real doctor who appears in most series as that token doctor character. His name is Marcus something I think. He was in Hippocratic too. Funny cos he was trained under Kenneth in that series lol
