Kevin Cheng Resurrects Career Due to “Law Ba” Role

Portraying a down-and-out lawyer and revealing his “quality butt” in the first episode of Ghetto Justice, Kevin Cheng’s <鄭嘉穎> career was resurrected by the role. His lucky moment may have arrived!  The series peaked at 35 points in ratings. Due to the popularity of the series, TVB announced the filming of a sequel in October 2011 featuring the original cast. Ghetto Justice was a surprise hit series and TVB intended to release a film version featuring Kevin and Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), with the addition of various film stars.

The original producer of Ghetto Justice, Tong Kei Ming (唐基明), was sought by Shaw Brothers to produce the project along with director, Chung Shue Kai (鍾樹佳).  Mr. Tong also revealed that Kevin Cheng was the third choice to play “Law Ba” in Ghetto Justice. “Our first choice was Bowie Lam (林保怡), however he rejected the role to film a mainland series instead. Our second choice was Felix Wong (黃日華), who was busy performing in China and turned down the role. Finally, we considered Kevin Cheng. I was surprised by his uninhibited performance.”

Shaw Studios will produce a film version of Ghetto Justice featuring the original cast. Realizing that the box office draw of television actors may be limited, Shaw Brothers will invite mainland stars to surround Kevin Cheng and Myolie Wu in the movie version, similar to the strategy employed in Turning Point < Laughing Gor之變節>. An inside source revealed, “Shaw Brothers intends to invite Zhou Xun (周迅) or Zhang Jingchu (張靜初). Among the male actors, they will ask Lau Wah (劉燁), Simon Yam (任達華), and Nick Cheung (張家輝). The big film stars will oppose Kevin’s legal team.” As to whether Zhou Xun or Lau Wah may be involved in the project, Producer Tong Kei Ming said, “Everything is still under consideration in the early stages, thus nothing has been confirmed yet.”

Jayne: Congratulations to Kevin Cheng for his success as “Law Ba.” Do you agree this is defining role in his career? After seeing Kevin’s performance, I can’t really imagine Felix Wong or Bowie Lam playing the roles because they might be too stuffy.

  1. They overpraise Kevin’s Law Ba now like they did with Michael’s Laughing Gor two year ago.

    1. Michael Tse just got lucky. Laughing Gor is a role that is written greatly and fresh. I loved Laughing Gor too back then but after watching Michael Tse acting in another characters I realize that Michael Tse got popular only because of the character Laughing Gor and his acting is nothing special

      1. Same as Kevin, his “Law Ba” is likable, but not his acting

      2. Michael Tse has many other well-praised roles, just that Laughing’s impact has made many people forget about them. Before Laughing got overused by TVB, he had nothing but praise for his acting, and had always been acknowledged as a solid actor who got by on his acting skills and not on looks. People who haven’t followed his career and have no idea of his reception by audiences all these years, yet make judgemental statements like this, just have no clue…

      3. @Disagree

We’re talking about his acting career after Laughing Gor here. You can’t deny that Laughing Gor is Michael’s most applauded performance but what’s disappointing is that after Laughing Gor success Michael never delivered a strong and exceptional acting anymore. He has the same expressions in most of his series AFTER Laughing Gor.

      4. agree with Disagree xP

Michael was praised before but maybe he did change after Laughing or maybe he didn’t change(improve) so people got tired of the overexposer or people already forgot about the past performances =S either way not working well for him

      5. Look at Micheal’s role Man Leung in LFD. TVB didn’t overuse it so ppl still like it and don’t feel Man Leung is overpromoted like Laughing Gor.

And not all of Michael’s acting and roles after EU is similar to EU. It’s still Michael himself. But the shadow of Laughing Gor is too big to ppl to view Micheal in different way. And Michael, why don’t enjoy such light?

      6. @Vivien

Don’t agree on the expressions part either, as I’d been seeing entirely different faces of him in You’re Hired and My Better Halves, both AFTER Laughing Gor, mind you — in fact I would say he was exceptional in MBH, unfortunately the series itself wasn’t very strong and didn’t receive much interest so his excellent performance in it has been woefully overlooked. What’s disappointing for me is that his more important roles in Rippling Blossom and Relic were terribly written, and even more disappointing that some people are choosing to place the blame wholly on him and not any of it on the scriptwriters.

      7. In My Better Halves, Michael is more of Man Leung than Laughing Gor, if compare the expression.

BTW, I really like him in You’re hired.

    2. @Fox

Exactly, I really do think the problem lies not so much with Michael himself but with some people instinctively equating Laughing to everything he does. “the shadow of Laughing Gor is too big to ppl to view Micheal in different way” is a very good way of putting it. It’s actually every actor’s aspiration to have a signature role, and really there’re so many actors out there who’re just known for that one great role (especially in the west) and no one thinks any worse of them for it, why is it there’re some people being so hard on MikeT is something I can’t understand, especially since he *has* long proven his capability, just that these people choose to conveniently forget or ignore it when it comes to him.

      1. Michael should learn from Wayne. Same type of role but different names (RB to NR) and then ppl won’t say Laughing Gor again. I’m also saying this. Not mean I against Micheal Tse but TVB is truly overusing Laughing Gor. All the time I see Michael Tse, I see TVB link him to Laughing Gor. It’s quite tired.

However, I view Michael Tse in non-Laughing Gor way :P. He is always a quite good actor.

Again, the shadow of Laughing Gor. I don’t know it’s good for Micheal by now or not. First, it’s definitely good. Now, have to reconsider.

      2. @Fox

Erm, as a contracted artiste I don’t think he has a choice when it comes to how TVB wants to use him. I remember a 72 Tenants interview where he seemed quite resigned that they wanted him to do Laughing again. Looking at the variety of his past roles, he’s obviously always been an actor who delights in different roles different challenges and doesn’t mind “uglifying” himself or acting unlikeable characters, but perhaps with more fame comes less freedom, sometimes…

Glad that you view Michael Tse that way, dare I say objectively, and quite like a breathe of fresh air in recent times :p

      3. I mean TVB link Laughing Gor to Michael all the time, I don’t talk about Michael himself.

I said, I preferred Michael in You’re hired than EU. I like Laughing Gor character in EU but I just like the spoiled brat in You’re hired more.

      4. Michael also links himself to Laughing (I find a lot but others may not) but it is now part of him, acting can become “mechanic” and Laughing may or may not leave him

  2. I hope there won’t have Law Ba movie :P. I like Laughing Gor role but after a movie, then a series, then the plan of another movie, I have bad impression on Laughing Gor now. I mean Laughing Gor as a role, not the matter of Michael Tse.

Don’t overuse an actor, or the audience might change from love to hate.

    1. I heard the producer wants to make one Law Ba movie since Law Ba is so praised now.

      1. Same tactic with Laughing Gor. So soon ppl will “oh Law Ba again”.

Lol, dun tell me Kevin will change name to Law Ba :P.

    2. continued from above:

so I think what this article said is true that they really want to make a Law Ba movie and promote Kevin again

    3. Actually I have never quite understood what is the difference when it comes to Laughing Gor, as compared to so many other series that have sequel after sequel due to the original being well-received. Do you have similar bad impressions of Ah Man and Pak Kiu, for example, after three installments of Academy? I think not, right? IMHO there’s just a lot of instinctive biasness around, that’s all. I just wish people will be fair and not immediately write off any series or movie or character without having even watched it, whether it’s a sequel or not — who knows, the new script may be even better than the original!

      1. Have ppl said that Chung Lap Man is getting bored after 3 parts and Ron is police too much,

The matter of Laughing Gor is too many stuffs in just a short period. Ah Man and Pak Kiu aren’t main lead in part 3, especially Pak Kiu.

      2. Hmmm I guess I can only say I’ve seen a lot more people wishing for further Academy installments :p And it’s not just the Academy series of course, there’re all those others like DIF and so on. As for Laughing, despite some people complaining it’s been too much, I’m also seeing more and more interest stirring up over Omission, so if ratings turn out to be good and prove that the market is still there, there’ll be incentive for TVB to continue churning out the franchise.

  3. I’m glad that Felix and Bowie were not free. I like Kevin’s portrayal of Law Ba.

But, his performance is not flawless. I notice there’s one scene where he falters greatly, but, it’s only a few seconds scene, so not much people notice I guess. In fact, when I pointed it out in asianfanatics, a Law Ba fan tried to explain it away for him. (I’m only up to episode 5)

But, overall he did well. He’s the same as Raymond Lam in Sister Fah. Initially, he seems not natural, but, after a short while he became more into his role.

I disagree with Shaw Studio’s plan. If they bring in so many stars, it will be like Laughing Gor movie where the main character is overshadowed by more interesting characters and actors.

    1. but if they don’t invite Zhou Xun, Simon Yam, Nick Cheung I doubt Kevin and Myolie can pull the box office. Shaw need the big stars to make the Law Ba movie a hit.

      1. Then, don’t make the movie. If they make the movie, they need to have more confidence in their actors and characters they created. Yes, go invite one 1 or 2 big stars. But, don’t stuff the movie full with them.

      2. Why not since the series and character of Law Ba have become a big hit? That means they have the confidence but they just want to make the movie stronger

      3. Asking so many stars to be in it means they don’t have the confidence in Law Ba and the in the original series.

      4. ” the in the original series.”

I mean the say ‘the actors in the original series.

      5. “Asking so many stars to be in it means they don’t have the confidence in Law Ba and the in the original series.”

I disagree. In HK it takes special fees, special request to get big names as guests so I would say they saw the importance of Ghetto Justice and wishes to make it a fool proof hit.

      6. @Funn

“In HK it takes special fees, special request to get big names as guests so I would say they saw the importance of Ghetto Justice and wishes to make it a fool proof hit.”

I agree with you. They see the potential of GJ and want to make it stronger and a big hit at the cinemas

  4. Wow, I can’t imagine Bowie or Felix in this role. They seem a little too old for the character? I’m thinking that might mean that the casting for Myolie happened after casting Kevin since I can’t imagine her with Bowie or Felix.

I hope that he gets the favorite character award for this show (which I can imagine happening if they’re doing a movie and sequel!). Best Actor would probably be a tougher category because I can’t imagine them giving the award to him twice? I think he probably got a bad rap for winning Best Actor so early and for an easy role. If tvb had just waited to award him when he did a really good job on Last One Standing, there would have been less negative feedback on his acting. I’m glad this character shows that Kevin can shine in roles. 🙂

    1. “Wow, I can’t imagine Bowie or Felix in this role. They seem a little too old for the character? I’m thinking that might mean that the casting for Myolie happened after casting Kevin since I can’t imagine her with Bowie or Felix.”

According to Law Ba’s character profile in TVB.com, he’s supposed to be 45 years old. So, Bowie and Felix won’t be too old. In fact, Bowie is exactly 45 years old now.

The age difference between Law Ba and Kris is actually quite wide. Law Ba is 45, while Kris is 29.

      1. But kevin doesn’t look his age. Bowie is confident enough to attract all ages of women. But Felix would look like myolie’s dad!

      2. Kevin look 33. He look like same generation as Raymond and Ron.

Moses is Kevin’s age and even younger but look a lot older than Kevin.

        Felix is too old.

      3. Well, I think KC looks a bit maturer than the 79 team. Around 37-38. Younger than Moses in look. Around Steven Ma’s is more correct.

      4. Kevin may look very good for his age but hardly 33. He has the behaviour of a man much older than his own age. No denying he looks great but put him next to ron and ray of course he looks mature.

And if he doesn’t look good and looks his age or worse, with his talent, I doubt he will be 3rd choice. He probably won’t be considered since without his look he wouldn’t win favours of those who matters.

    2. Wayne won the Best Actor twice and so did Roger. Whoever got biggest applaud most likely win Best Actor, except for one or two odd years.

      1. you compare Kevin with Roger and Wayne, what a joke

    3. Not a joke. Chai Gau and Ah Wong also got huge applause just like Law Ba. Don’t forget Chai Gau and Ah Wong.

      1. Not a joke, Laughing Gor also has a huge applause. Rmb Laughing Gor in NBC :P.

    4. I’m surprised Kevin was the 3rd choice. L.A. law is like a more extreme and sloppier version of his character in only you (which was a very good series too). Although I think bowie could’ve pulled it off b/c he has this manly confidence that’s quite attractive. But Felix is way too old to play such a sexy character.

I think Kevin has high chance of winning an anniversary award too. Hopefully now, he’ll stop giving black face to reporters. He has to understand media relations is a 2 way street.

    5. I haven’t watched the drama, but from what I heard about “Law Ba”, I can imagine Bowie in this role :). I loved Bowie’s portrayal of a “flawed protagonist” such as in The Gem of Life. As for Bowie being too subtle, well that’s what I like about Bowie and what make him in my list of favorites. His style is different from the normal dramatic-acting that many award-winning actors in TVB love to use.

In my opinion if Bowie is to portray this “Law Ba” role, it’s highly possible that he will get warm response too. However from what I noticed, viewers love “surprises”. This is what I saw from Linda Chung’s “Miss Koo”‘s acceptance. Bowie and his already stellar acting won’t be able to give the “surprise” factor 🙂

      Just my 2 cents.

      1. I believe that Bowie can portray ‘Law Ba’ well it. But, Felix, totally cannot imagine.

But, I still prefer Kevin. 🙂

  5. I didn’t think that he was that good with this character though. Prolly after reading all the praises, it made my expectation go up only to have it flatten out.

I found him above average based on his recent roles potrayed but please don’t do a movie on this. It will turn everyone off.

  6. How did he “resurrect” his career after he filmed Ghetto Justice? Kevin has always been a great actor imo. This was just another solid acting display by Kevin.

    1. I assume you didn’t watch BTROC and Kevin’s dead acting.

    2. Kevin was never regarded as a solid actor by audeince before this. So the news is mentioning that Law Ba is Kevin’s ground breaking because it made audience accept and praised him.

      1. You forgot Last one standing.

Actually KC is suitable for these roles (like Law) than the goody 2 shoes

      2. @Fox

Someone brought up awards above. You think Kevin will get Best Actor again? He got the needed applause

      3. Just June now, still soon to predict. Like EU is praised and many ppl guessed that EU will win many awards, but then RB won over it and EU ended up with 1 award only.

      4. I’m just talking about the applauded character not the series. Laughing Gor WON.

      5. Many ppl predicted that Laughing Gor will win Best Chac, but no, Chai Gau won.

      6. That’s because Wayne Lai+Chai Gau is unbeatable

      7. continued:

Besides audience already got tired of Laughing by that time because the movie has aired and Laughing Gor isn’t impressive?

      8. Then you can’t ensure that Law Ba can’t be beaten by a role in the next series.

I don’t think Chai Gau is a too special character at all :). So it’s kinda beatable to me. Laughing Gor, as a role, is more special than Chai Gau.

      9. Add: Chai Gau and Laughing Gor, I mean the characters. It isn’t a comment on acting. So Wayne fans, please don’t argue that Wayne’s acting is too good.

      10. Again, also can’t ensure that Law Ba will shine in Law Ba movie.

      11. Chai Gau gains more applause and as I said above by that time audience has been shown with an unimpressive version of Laughing Gor so the feeling must’ve died down.

It happened to me. After watching Laughing Gor movie I don’t feel Laughing is impressive anymore. Laughing could’ve had more chance to shine longer if he didn’t get overshadowed in that movie and his character in the movie is also less interesting

      12. Laughing Gor movie only out in Jan of the next year, 9 months after EU and 5 months after the TVB anni.

So same to Law Ba movie, ok?

      13. When Chai Gau was out, Laughing Gor movie wasn’t out yet. So can’t blame Laughing Gor movie to reduce the fame of Laughing Gor in EU.

      14. I’m mistaken about Laughing gor movie airing. Anyway Laughing gor applause wasn’t as huge as Wayne’s applause. Chai Gau is dramatic and has great chemistry with Sheren

      15. I think you are wrong again. The influence of Laughing Gor isn’t smaller than Chai Gau. Laughing Gor’s death is on NBC, rmb? But matter is RB aired after EU.

So I’m saying this: Law Ba can be top praised by now but you can’t sure in the next 6 months, no series and character will have a character that beat Law Ba, like wat Chai Gau did to Laughing Gor.

      16. Agree with Fox and disagree with Vivien. Laughing gor’s applause was waaaay bigger than Chai Gau’s applause, if you objectively compare all the news coverage (even overseas!) and online reactions on forums and facebook and so on. Even now the “Laughing phenomenon” is still on the record books. But audience memory being what it is, Laughing was heavily disadvantaged by airing so early in the year and more so with RB/Chai Gau coming out after it. And Chai Gau was advantaged by NOT having any comparable character coming out after him. Though actually even then, right before the awards, HK papers were still predicting a double-win for Laughing, which is not too bad given the above-mentioned disadvantages. It was TVB that chose to give Chai Gau a triple-win, for reasons we can only guess at.

  7. I can’t imagine Bowie or Felix paired with Myolie, lucky Kevin was given the role after the others decline.

I can’t imagine bowie or Felix acting so spunky and fun for that role. They always seem so serious.

    1. If I rmb rite, Bowie paired up with younger girl than Myolie.

    2. Bowie is boring. He’s as boring as Kevin in serious roles.

      1. Felix is also old and I can’t imagine Felix doing a fun role

      2. Bowie had Henri in Healing Hands 2. Funny and serious at the same time. It’s a significant role of him.

      3. I don’t recall Bowie got applauded for the that role

      4. Really? Lol. Paul Ching and Henri was praised and loved by a huge number of ppl when Healing Hands was aired. Up to now, Henri is still a role that ppl mention when talk about Bowie.

Healing Hands was successful. If not, then why it comes to part 3?

      5. Bowie when in the right role can shine and be sexy as hell. He can do this role and fits the character. BUT kevin is better looking.

      6. The best part of Healing Hands are the chemistry between the characters. I don’t recall any character stood out alone.

      7. You think so, Vivien. But fact is Henri and Paul are the heart of Healing Hands and ppl praised them a lot in this.

      8. Bowie has a lot of characters where he is defined as a cool suave guy, sexy and intelligent.

War of Beauty :P. Girls run around him.

      9. Yes Vivien, sexy. I find Bowie exceedingly sexy when he wants to be in a role where he can be. He may not be good looking, he may be balding, but in a suit as a high ranking policeman he is deadly.

      10. Deadly? He make me want to sleep in EMYM. It didn’t help that 80% of the series screentime has him and he’s always in a boring suit.

He was better in series such as WAB. In police series such as CIB and EMYM he bored me out.

      11. What more can I say? It is a matter of opinion. But in a few years’ time you might agree with me.

      12. @Vivien- u may be too young to remember but besides michael Tao, lawrence ng as Dr.ching and bowie were the original housewife killers back in the day.

Henry was a character that I loved to hate b/c he was such a dog that kept treating his gf Annie (flora Chan) badly but she kept taking his crap anyway! Bowie is not outright handsome like Kevin, but he has a very alluring air about him.

      13. Never found Bowie sexually attractive at all. Baffled at the women throwing themselves at his character in WAB. Too young for the HH series. But then I watched GOL and I finally saw it. Strangely, Maggie Siu whom I don’t consider very sexy either and he had insane sexual heat… kinda hilarious if Bowie really is gay.

  8. I love the whole serie. Great cast, great written. Very refreshing!

Also love Kevin. Before Law Bo. Yes, his acting is not very wel. But, he works very hard. Now, at the right place, at the right timing, he got a good scrip. I agree, Law Bo is likeble. But, the actor have to sparcle the roll.

I also love Myolie. I think she is very talented. She can play lovely caracters, but also evil caracters. Thats is good!

  9. I love Felix Wong but as a lawyer I would think that would be a stretch. Bowie Lam would be great BUT the irony of Kevin is he is good looking and yet is so ordinary in his behaviour. So I would think it was an interesting casting that suited the story.

AND FINALLY SOME ARTICLE ACKNOWLEDGES THAT KEVIN’S CAREER WAS DEAD BEFORE THIS SERIES! FINALLY!!!!

    1. Bowie Lam will be boring since he will try to make everything so subtle. Kevin is more interesting for this role since he goes against type which is some lover boys with dead acting.

      1. I disagree. Since Bowie is an excellent actor, he can be convincing in anything.

      2. Well, I won’t feel convincing if Bowie acts a teenager now :P.

      3. @Funn
Anything? I wont buy him as a young man seeking first love let alone a teenager 😛

Bowie might be good at being a gay since he is one. He should try that.

      4. When I say anything I meant within reasonableness. Even Kevin can’t be convincing as a teenager. Not even Ray or Linda.

And when does being gay means he is better as gay character? So he can’t play straight?

What is wrong these days? Bowie such a fine actor being pushed aside and frankly crappy actor like Ron get praised for saving a series.

      5. @ Funn: Because a lot of ppl included Vivien watched a series to catch Ron’s handsomeness :P. In this case, Bowie of course pushed aside.

      6. @ Funn: Forgot to ask: Who say Ron saved a series? And which series?

      7. Bowie vs Wayne Lai, I take Wayne Lai anyday as the better actor. Now more fair since both also not handsome.

      8. Handsome and sexy can be one or two very distinct elements. Ron bores me. Again it is about taste. I like an actor with character, a bit of personality, a certain attitude. Ron may have it sometime later as age catches up with him but you can’t deny Bowie practically built his reputation as an actor not by looks but by his on screen personality and irresistable charisma.

      9. I beg to differ. Wayne Lai is actually rather handsome.

And I will take both, and would be best if they’re gay lovers in the same series.

      10. I think of aura. Some ppl might dun have good look but have the aura. This aura makes them outstanding, even better than just a pretty face.

BTW, it’s also matter of opinion.

I think A is good, you think A is bad. Can’t convince each other.

      11. Maybe Ron just doesn’t have the character that you like. In TVB series it’s more rare to find a good character for a young person of 20 year olds than a good character written for 35 year old and more.

      12. Ron has a character that he can really convince me: Lang Huet.

Dun need to talk much and act cool :). Just need to act cool. Ron should take the roles like this more. Lang Huet is shuai.

The “battle inside” roles won’t fit him. His eyes are beautiful, but can’t talk and express the feeling out.

Well, the Huet – Jing mini fan :P.

      13. Or maybe, JUST MAYBE he is really not that good.

      14. Personally, I think Ron’s Wong Kai Kit in RDOV are quite well written. But Ron wasn’t into Wong Kai Kit enough.

Leo Tung in Brick of law is also a good character. Even died in pitiful.

And Lang Huet – the most convincing acting of Ron up to now.

      15. Ron has improved tremendously in his acting since he come back EU and RB. Only that now his screentime are so little for these new series.

      16. It must be a matter of opinion. I don’t and will never consider Wayne Lai handsome

      17. Don’t be worried. Ron is having a 1st leading role in a series. Let’s see he can shine or not.

Being a half Ron fans, I like his look over his talent.

      18. “Ron has improved tremendously in his acting since he come back EU and RB. “

I like Ron, but, he didn’t act that well in Rosy Business. He’s better in EU, but, still not in the caliber of Bowie Lam.

      19. IS that even a fair comparison. Bowie Lam is stable now but when he was Ron’s age he wasn’t anywhere near the current status too

      20. nor where we, audiences, forced to watch TVB over promote people as much back then they actually needed a chance

      21. You are wrong Vivien. When Bowie is in Ron’s age now (32), he is already a famous siu sangs and casted as lead in many series. Do you know Bodyguard?

    2. Haven’t watched GJ yet but Felix was a lawyer in that show called “Innocently Guilty” with Anita Yuen. He was great but rather stuffy.

    1. I think so too. As I said above if Wayne and Roger can get it twice, so can Kevin. Law Ba got the applause.

      1. Law Ba has a chance, but not sure 100%.

And Law Ba as a character or as KC’s acting? If you are talking about the character, then you should talk about Most fave chac, Vivien.

      2. To make my opinion clearer: If no character or actor can have a big influence than KC as Law Ba, KC will have the chance to win higher (another factor that affect is the luck. Rmb Joe Ma with Maiden Vow? Many ppl blv he will win, he is highly praised with this role, but the scandal came just before the award and boom, Joe Ma is white hand). But now still too soon to conclude that 100% or even 90% or 80% that KC will win.

      3. Law Ba and Kevin both got huge applaud from audeince from what I read in many news reports. So he’s eligible for both.

      4. So you should say that Kevin and Law Ba. Will be 2 nominations of 2 categories.

      5. I’m 100% sure he will be the finalist for both categories with the amount of support he gets now.

      6. @Fox

You also can’t deny that as Jayne said this is a defining role in his career.

      7. You mean the top 5? Lol, being in this top dun have much meaning.

      8. I denied this in where?

I haven’t said a word that Law Ba is bad or not loved. My comment is: It’s too soon to say KC and Law Ba will prolly win.

        Ok?

      9. If the audience applaud and support you then it has meaning since you won the audience.

Besides the producer also agreed that Kevin showed a surprised with his uninhibitedness which break away from his previous goody lover roles

      10. In fact I haven’t watched GJ so I don’t comment on the acting and character. My opinion is about the possibility to win of KC. Not even 80% up to now.

      11. Now I totally can’t get you, Vivien.

Win the audience and win the award, they are too different things.

You want to have a discussion on wat topic now? Win the audience or win the award?

If win the audience, I won’t comment until I finish the series.

But your question above is win the award, that’s why I told you that still too soon to predict.

I hope now it’s clear enough.

      12. Actually Fox he already win the audience of not there won’t be so many news talking about his career resurrection and applause every day.

      13. Because I still dun have the push and feel to watch the series. Simply that.

        Any complaints?

      14. I don’t discuss with you on win the audience

You asked me that I think Law Ba can win award or not.

And the topic here is win the award

So don’t change the topic this sudden to he wins the audience and make like I’m saying he didn’t win the audience.

Repeat: NO! I’m talking about win the award

So back to the topic or you can start a new one that KC win the audience or not. In this topic, you won’t see me comment that KC win the audience or not.

      15. Whatever. Why don’t have the push? This is a very good series. First time I don’t want to complain at the scriptwriter too. I remember I have many complains for MSOEF and YSSS.

      16. Because I want to push. Why I need to find an explaination for my feel?

      17. You have complains for which series, none of my business and even if I want to care, I can’t. It’s your own opinion.

      18. I agree with Fox. Yes, Kelvin’s Law Ba is very popular now. But, he has one thing against him i.e. time.

Series that are aired earlier in the year has a disadvantage. The heat for the series and the actors involved in the series would died down by the end of the year. The series that was aired later has more momentum.

Laughing Gor losed in the award show because his hype and momentum has died down and taken over by Chai Gau.

So, what fox said is correct. It depends of whether there’s any interesting character that will appear in series for the 2nd half of the year.

      19. Rosy Business wasn’t really a surprising hit. Before the series started filming TVB has already released news about making a grand production starring Wayne based on a mainland remake which becomes Rosy Business. Wayne had his character Chai Gau tailor made to be a character with lots of ups and downs and so that he has a lot of room to act.

      20. Kevin and Law Ba had it better than Laughing Gor because Laughing Gor aired in March while Kevin’s Law Ba aired in June.

      21. AFOS was aired early last year too and Kenneth got huge applause and support for his acting although still smaller than what Kevin got. When the awards come many people still remember Kenneth and thought he could’ve been a deserving winner for the My Favourite Character award

      22. If GJ is in Nov then the chance of winning is higher.

March and June doesn’t have much different. RB is April. Depends on having any series that can be a heat in the 2nd half of 2011 or any role can be loved by audience during this period (2nd half of 2011) or not. If have one (or more), then ppl might forget Law Ba.

      23. but this year there are many of these characters that popped out compared to previous so who knows what will pop out next

      24. many people still remember Kenneth and thought he could’ve been a deserving winner for the My Favourite Character award

You can see in most of poll, Kenneth’s role dun have the highest votes. Even not in top 3 of highest votes.

      25. Either way can’t deny that Law Ba is the top contender now unless some lucky chap got a better applause and become a bigger winner in audience eyes. Maybe you guys are right and we should wait to see FH3, 3K and Steven/Kenneth/Selena ancient series first

      26. @ Vivien

” When the awards come many people still remember Kenneth and thought he could’ve been a deserving winner for the My Favourite Character award”

        Did he win? No.

People still remember Laughing Gor during anniversary. He still made top 5. But, he didn’t win.

I’m not saying there’s no exception. But, the usual trend is, series aired earlier will be at a disadvantage and lost momentum.

      27. Michael T did win for Laughing as Best Supporting Actor in 09 just after that people + TVB continued with Laughing as his name last year and now

  10. Ghetto Justice is an enjoyable series and Law Ba is refreshing, but to the point of a sequel and movie? Am I the only one here who thinks it’s overly hyped? Maybe my expectations are too high, but I don’t see anything so extraordinarily great about Law Ba to land a sequel and a movie.

    1. What’s so great about Laughing Gor to have a movie and an indirect spin off? Maybe that’s the same case to Law Ba. Law Ba is refreshing from the pretty boy lover roles that Kevin always had and he delivers a huge surprise.

      1. Honestly, audience reaction to both characters cannot be compared — no other character has come close to Laughing in terms of reaction generated. That’s a fact regardless what you personally think of it. But I think any character that has further stories to tell are entitled to a sequel, so sure, nothing wrong with Law Ba getting one too, as long as the producers are confident they can write further good stories for him. There’re so many other sequels out there that were made when the originals aren’t all that exceptional either, afterall.

      2. I found Kevin in Only You better but too bad Only You was more a romance than a law series which is easier to have a sequel/movie to

  11. Yes, anything about TVB is so overly hyped these days. Linda’s charater in YSSS and now Kevin….. It seems like I love to hate TVB…. To me, whatever about TVB now is just OK… or so so…or worst…. so when I see news that praising characters, actors or the series like this, I know I will be disappointed later. Serious, I don’t care about TVB’s award anymore, because it’s just a joke to me.

  12. also anyone notice Myolie Wu makeup too heavy in her every series?????

    1. Who wouldn’t? Not just in her every series but also in her daily life. She should wear less. Less is more.

    2. I think her heavy make up suit her character in the series though. She’s a person who is all about packaging. She has to wear branded clothes and look chic all the time. So, her wearing heavy make up is part of her packaging.

  13. Although I like Kevin’s portrayal of Law Ba, I have faith that if Bowie played the role, he would be great as well. Agree with others that Felix is too old for this role to have any sexy appeal.

In terms of acting Bowie is better than Kevin and there is a subtleness in his acting that I didn’t notice before, but appreciate now.

Kevin is the best looking among the three considered for the role, but his age was showing in here. The wrinkles on the side of his eyes were pretty deep.

  14. Kevin will definitely get a Best Actor nomination this year…

No Wayne Lai this year so it will be more open,

The contenders will be Kevin Cheng, Raymond Lam, Moses Chan and Joe Ma at the moment..with Kevin the favorite right now until we see the other series to air this year

    1. @mulder,

I heard there were rumors that FH3 will air in the summer. Not 100% sure, but there’s a possibility it might.

Besides Joe, neither Raymond or Moses deserves a nomination, especially the latter. But TVB really has a limited amount of actors and we can pretty much predict who will be nominated and make the final 5.

Don’t forget Steven. He was good in 7 Days in Life. And his contract is ending.

      1. Talk about contract, LF’s contract will also end in 2012 (next year) and Moses might focus on his cafe career.

neither Raymond or Moses deserves a nomination

        Why not?

      2. Because they weren’t outstanding in their respective roles, IMO. LF was passable and good. But Moses is not getting away with his performance. 😉

      3. Steven’s contract is ending? wasn’t it just last year he renewed it or has time passed by so quickly

      4. But they won’t be nominated with these roles, for sure. They still have series on hands and so does SM. I doubt that SM will be nominated with 7 days because of its rating. Of course, unless his next series has lower rating than 7 days.

And nominate is different to win the nomination, Chriselle. Anyone who has a role is deserve to have a nomination, but win it is another story.

And why roles? Both of them only has 1 series from the beginning of the year to now.

      5. @Chriselle
No FH3 won’t be aired in the summer. It might be aired in Sept or Oct

      6. Moses is plainly horrible but he will still be nominated. Only that if he gets into the 5 finalist I will slap TVB.

Steven Ma wasn’t that good in 7DIL. He falters for 3/4 portion of the series and has a hard time being a clairvoyant guy.

      7. There were news that Jayne translated before about TVB wanting to give Steven the award but if his next series with Kenneth and Selena fails or if Kenneth overshadow him, he wont beat Law Ba.

      8. well… get prepare to slap TVB, there is 0 chance Moses not being in top 5

      9. @Kwan

I know. TVB won’t left out such a heavily favoured person. 620 loves her dear Ah Mo dearly.

      10. 620 favoured Moses more recently but Kevin might get back 620’s attention after this life changing popularity hike

      11. @Kwan: Tavia fans always say that 620 hate her, so a lot of ppl won’t say she loves whole TVB, lol.

      12. She favours Linda, Myolie and Kate. In a latest interview she add Fala and Tavia. Charmaine is her most favoured actress before she leaves TVB.

      13. I have a view that Tavia is overpromoted recently but I know ppl will bash me for that :P.

However, it isn’t a bad thing, even a good thing to her fans and maybe to me :P.

      14. the interview 620 talks about female artist seems more of her job to promote them than her favours

      15. I know nomination and winning the nomination is different. Perhaps, I was thinking about them getting into the final top 5 nominees. Every year, Raymond and Moses are guaranteed a spot regardless of the quality of their performances. Take 2010 for example, do you think LF’s MOL and Moses CBML was worthy of Best Actor or being in top 5? TVB is making it more and more transparent that their awards ceremony is just a joke. It’s up to TVB to nominate and it’s their choice who wins. And whoever wins is who they favor and not always who deserves it.

And I disagree that whoever has a role is deserving of a nomination. That totally undermines the worth of being nominated. When everyone who has a role can be nominated, that means no one is nominated, no one’s performance is particularly special. That’s why I oppose to TVB nominating 15 for Best Actor/Actress and Favorite Male/Female Character now. It use to be only 10, making the slots of nominees more worth fighting for.

      16. @Vivien,

Thanks for confirming. Perhaps, TVB has expectations that Wayne productions will garner high ratings. It might be an anniversary series even?

      17. @Chriselle

I don’t know buy many people said BT3K is more suitable for anniversary series but TVB can always pitch forward 3 anniversary series anytime.

      18. They are making it more transparent, didn’t they say they have the last say, voters count for like 10% or something as in almost useless

and if I am right, it used to be 20 spots only 08 was 10 spots and 09-10 was 15, but less spots are not going to make the ones really worthy nominated either just makes them forgotten as Sammul, Leila, Sunny and many more over the years

      19. Since Sunny now got on the wrong side of the audience TVB might push him away even more.

Sammul and Leila aren’t contracted so TVB refused to promote them but Wayne isn’t contracted too yet enjoy privilege of a promoted artist.

      20. If you are talking about acting of them in MOL and CBML, I will say yes, deserved because other performances I don’t see the better. Don’t mention me of Wayne Lai in No Regrets because I don’t feel it’s anything too special in acting. Still Wayne Lai as Chai Gau in 2009, no breakthrough.

But if you are talking about the character Kingsley and Gam Da Lok, then I’ll say no because both characters are bad, one boring, one annoying. I like the character Hoi Sing than Kingsley and Tong Pak Ku than Gam Da Lok, but they are not nominated with these roles.

However, even I dislike to hate both character Kingsley and Gam Da Lok, I don’t deny a fact that MOL and CBML are popular and these characters are loved by a lot of ppl. And of course I know that the popularity of LF and Moses help them to guarantee a places on top 5. I give them credit for that because if they don’t have any talent or charisma, why they are more famous than many others.

My view on nomination is different. Win the award or being in top might be honor, but nomination? Alright, they all put their effort on work, why don’t nominate them all?

      21. Wayne isn’t a contracted artist but his son is. See the difference?

      22. Queen of Phoenixes is half confirmed to be Anni series. Along with it ppl said of 3K or Heaven Burns. Likely 3K than Heaven Burns.

      23. Moses acting in CBML was criticised harshly by audience and press alike. There’s no justifying why he can get to final 5 besides 620 and TVB’s love.

      24. @Kwan: Yes, his son. Signed a 11 year contract with Stephen Chan. Even call Stephen Chan god father.

      25. @Vivien: You might check the news reports again. Moses isn’t criticized by the reporters in CBML. They even praised him like god.

      26. What? Wayne? Wayne Lai? Wayne Lai’s son? Isn’t he like 15 or something, signed a contract for what since Wayne said his son wasn’t interested in showbiz

      27. Queen of Phonix look like grand production and I keep seeing people mention about Myolie’s break away from type role in it. I’m not surprised it’s a touted series.

Between 3K and Heaven Burns it might be 3K. Heaven Burns only has Moses as a contracted main actor.

      28. @Kwan: Wayne Lai. Wayne Lai’s son. Wayne put his son to some TVB jobs like dubbing. Stephen Chan helps his son to sign a contract and the boy calls Stephen Chan god father.

      29. @Fox

Again maybe we just don’t see the same reports. I’m not surprised of some reporters praise Moses like God. He must’ve great relationship with the reporters. We all saw how the reporters one sidedly bash Bernice and sympathize with Moses when Bernice had her scandal.

      30. LKH mentions that the themesong for 3K is recorded, so 3K 80% probably will be aired this year.

      31. @Vivien: Agree with you that the reporters like Moses.

      32. Doesn’t LF sing the theme song so it might be recorded now to fit his schedule

      33. @ Kwan: 2009 but dun rmb which newspaper. It’s in Nov-Dec time.

As for LF, yes, maybe for his album but record a song also means the series will be out soon, not need to wait for more than a year.

      34. well.. I’m pretty sure Heaven + Earth had over 1 year and everything should be done Johnathan Chik’s 2nd series after that should also be in post production if not done

      35. The themesong of Heaven Burns was recorded >1 year ago?

      36. well actually I never heard anything about the theme song, don’t think there is much info about the theme song

but the sub song (which could be the theme song) is written by Paul Wong from Beyond was used in the series I believe during filing they had it recorded if not at that time then not long after filming

      37. To my experience, when ppl talk about recording themesong for a TVB series, the series will be released not too long after that.

      38. And if have a MV for it, the chance to air is even higher.

      39. Heaven + Earth was rumored to be aired many times too so I guess that means they are ready to be aired, especially when Lives of Omission is wrapping up filming now and airing in a month + week

      40. TVB is weird like this.

Same to Heaven Burns is Men With No Shadow. The series is even in airing list (then being replaced by YSSS), then now still dun have a timeslot for it.

      41. “That’s why I oppose to TVB nominating 15 for Best Actor/Actress and Favorite Male/Female Character now. It use to be only 10, making the slots of nominees more worth fighting for.”

Reducing the slot is only good if people they slotted actually deserve the slot. But, they slot people not because of good acting, but, because they want to promote that actor.

I would rather TVB slot a lot of people in the initial round and let audience choose. I find this more fair.

      42. @Kidd: Hi 5. I think so, too. Just nominate all of them, then reduce to top this and that.

      43. “I would rather TVB slot a lot of people in the initial round and let audience choose. I find this more fair.”

That would only work if TVB’s awards were based on the audience’s votes. They have polls on their official website, but how accurate are the actual results with those they receive from the polls? I question that. Like you said, it’s based on who they want to promote.

      44. @Chrisell: TVB stated that: Public vote 30%, producers 20% and TVB committee 50%

      45. Who is Wayne’s son? Name please? Better if got photo.

      46. Isn’t it unfair for producers to get to vote? Wouldn’t they have a bias over those they cast in their productions?

      47. @Kidd: When I find one I’ll send you. I dun rmb his son’s name. His son often took pix with TVB artists.

      48. @ Chriselle: Reminds me that last year the TVB committee has 6 persons, 3 votes for CBML, 2 votes for No Regrets. The last person Tommy Leung voted for… MOL. Ppl told him to change the vote so he voted again to CBML. Lol.

      49. Kidd,
I think Wayne Lai’s son name is “Ching Kiu” which can be translated as “righteous bridge.” Wayne said he liked the character “bridge” since it is so strong and an withstand any weather. In the hospital after delivery, Sean Lau and Amy Kwok came to visit. They sounded out different possible combinations and Sean and Amk came up with the winning combination.

Sean is one of Wayne’s closest friends in the industry.

Roger Kwok had a good story regarding the naming of his son as well. However, I don’t recall his son’s name right now, although Roger mentioned he picked it because he wanted his son to have strong leadership abilities.

      50. @ Kwan

Thanks for the weibo link. Wow, the boy’s eyebrows…

    2. @Mulder “The contenders will be Kevin Cheng, Raymond Lam, Moses Chan and Joe Ma at the moment..with Kevin the favorite right now until we see the other series to air this year”

I agree with your contenders but Moses doesn’t deserve that spot but I think you have a correct list. TVB will put him in.

The last person is Wayne Lai since FH3 will air this year.

      1. Maybe Joe will be put out and Steven Ma in as Joe left TVB by now.

      2. @Fox

I forgot Steven Ma. This time i agree with you 😛

  15. Congratulation to the Ghetto Justice cast in their success in this drama. I particularly enjoyed this drama. Heard rumors they were making Ghetto Justice 2

    1. It’s confirmed and not rumours anymore. Agree it’s an excellent and enjoyable series with untypical storyline and great characters

    2. Filming for GH2 is going to be end of the year… TVB milking it 🙂

  16. Kevin played a really likeable character but not exactly *really* well. He could’ve done better. But its nice that his playing a lead I like watching.

His character has gotten kinda boring ever since he got together with Myolie’s character. His lost his sense of aloofness that made his character more likeable.

    1. SDS,
Agree that Law Ba was Avery likable role. I think any actor who played it may have received good response, but Kevin surprised the audience that he can play such an outrageous character well and since he is a “toned down” actor, he thankfully did not exaggerate in his acting.

  17. I don’t understand the hype w/ Law Ba’s character. Sure.. he was a likable character but his acting certainly wasn’t better than it usually is. I actually thought that some of his scene in the court room was really exagerrated. I wonder if he would have gotte so much attention if he didn’t do the butt scene.

    1. I think so too. I enjoyed the series from beginning to end and it was one of the better series this year. When TVB announced that a sequel will be filmed, I was happy.

However, I question whether it’s a good idea to have a movie. But TVB always wants to milk the cash cow and make money while they can. E.U. was enjoyable, but I didn’t like the movie.

And I agree. Kevin’s acting was good, but I didn’t think it was better than usual. It was his unusual and unconventional character that stood out more. Actually, I think the opposite of his court scenes. In one of the them, he performed really well. I don’t exactly remember, but I think it was the sister-falling-in-love-with-brother case.

    2. Not good for you but most audience here applauded him greatly. That means he got the audience support and applause.

      1. Judy is also an audience, so she can raise voice just like other audience.

  18. I am totally not surprised and quite happy! I think Kevin suited this role really well, honestly I used to be quite bored of him in the ‘good guy’ roles the ones always in a suit etc..I think Kevin plays this ‘ma lat’ lawyer to perfection LOL

Ever since he played the photographer in that series with Yoyo Mung, I thought that he was better but this latest role of his takes the ‘ma lat’ to a new level..so quite happy for him 🙂

Not sure if the movie will be as much of a hit hmmm I didn’t quite like the “Laughing Gor” movie..

    1. This is a life changing event for Kevin. He really got applauded to the top it seems from the audience comments here.

      1. I don’t know if you notice or not but not all the audience in here (keyword: here. Don’t argue that the city or else talk about Law Ba) praised Law Ba and Kevin’s acting.

This post doesn’t mean I criticize Law Ba or Kevin because like I said, I haven’t watched the series. I just want to say that you are repeating about how great Law Ba is too much. It might make ppl feel opposite to wat you want to say.

      2. When did I say all? I said most. Most doesnt mean all.

Why would ppl feel opposite. Many people here have watched the series and liked it except maybe you and Funn who still dont watch.

      3. He really got applauded to the top it seems from the audience comments here.

In this quote, where is your MOST? And even the word Most, it isn’t quite true because I see at least 4 ppl dun applaud Law Ba or Kevin. But it doesn’t matter. Law Ba still can be a good character and Kevin provided good acting. The character and the acting itself can talk, no need to repeat many times that audience applauded it, top of applaud, etc. Really dun need, Vivien.

Why would ppl feel opposite. Many people here have watched the series and liked it except maybe you and Funn who still dont watch.

Well, it’s just a suggestion. I think you repeat yourself too much. Yes, I know you love Law Ba to top and hate Laughing Gor movie, but need to repeat it in more than 5 posts? That’s kinda enough.

I don’t comment on the series because I haven’t watched. I said so. I’m commenting on the way you repeat yourself. Too different matters.

It’s my opinion. You can take it, or keep doing wat you are doing. Yourself can decide.

And I told you: I don’t have the feel and push inside me to watch GJ now. I might try it later, or never, it’s up to my mood.

    2. I don’t like Laughing Gor movie too and Michael Tse acts better in E.U than in the movie.

I used to like Laughing Gor a lot but never liked Laughing Gor and Michael Tse since the movie and after.

      1. Didn’t you say that Michael Tse is blur in this Laughing Gor movie? If you can’t notice him, then why never like him? Well, I think you are overreacted a bit with the Laughing Gor movie.

BTW, as you liked Laughing Gor then hate/not like him because of the movie, I think you shouldn’t wish to have a Law Ba movie.

  19. I think Bowie must’ve regret that he rejected this great series with great script and stories and characters but he won’t make a good Law Ba anyway.

    1. Can’t predict anything :P. I doubt that Bowie will feel much regrets. Overall, Bowie had successful series. So he dun have anything to feel regret.

  20. I am truly amazed by the tremendous response generated over this series and especially Kevin’s role in it.Before Only You, bricks were raining on his head for his ‘boring ‘ performances. He was, I can say, being criticized for almost anything he did and that it was only his good looks that saved him , or something to that effect. It was even suggestd that TVB was dumping him to promote the other actors like Moses and Raymond Lam. And I remember remarking that maybe it was not so because they had in store for him 4 new series, Home Troopers, Only You. Ghetto Justice and King Boxer, and that given a good story and a well- written script he might just prove himself a better actor than what had been previouly thought of him. I’m indeed very glad for what I’d thought could happen to him for this is a breakthrough for Kevin in his fading popularity and career.I think he has learned a lot and has better PR now, no more scowling, black looks anymore and more willing to be more communicative to the media. So, what I would like to say is. Bravo, Kevin!

With regard to a film or sequel to the series, why not? After all people are complaining that the 20 episodes are too few and I don’t see any problems with having a few more polished and experienced actors like Nick Cheong and Simon Yam in it because this will only be a challenge and inspiration to all the cast members to give their very best so that the sequel or film will be a success.

    1. After his success as Law Ba I can conclude that Kevin is a lot better than Moses Chan and Steven Ma who are in his generation. If I’m not mistaken Kevin and Steven debuted together too.

Moses acting took a nose dive since he won Best Actor and Steven Ma acting is the same in all his series and never got tremendous praises. His performance of an uncouth individual in AWT is nowhere near as good as Kevin’s Law Ba.

      1. Before this and up until Home Troopers I found most of Kevin’s acting are soulless, boring and wooden and that including UTCOL where he’s helped by Niki’s charismatic beauty. He was especially wooden in BTROC and still falters a lot in AFOS.

He improved in Only You where he’s not as boring but Law Ba brought him to limelight. I like the uncouth ways of Law Ba that Kevin did.

  21. i dont understand the hype, nothing against the cast. but 35 pts peak finale is considered high now? thats one episode regular for CBML. ppl standards kind of low lately. i would expect it to be in high 30s or 40s for TVB to jump over it. i guess they dont want a movie for Charmaine’s drama because she’s no longer favored as a non management artist.

  22. kevin actually best actor this years no doubt about it!!! ,as for myolie ,i prefer charmaine she got more vulnerable n her extraordinarily acting ,sorry myolie fan ,coz kevin n charmaine just a perfect couple for this drama ,by t way myolie hair stylist should know her hair cut its seriously bad….

  23. I loved GJ and love Kevin in it. He was great as Law Ba. I wish they had a different actress for him though instead of Myolie, I never liked her and think that she and Kevin does not have chemistry. Just my 2 cents. Please don’t attack me MW fans 😉
