Marco Ngai Comments on Breakup with Joyce Tang
TVB star Joyce Tang (滕麗名) had always wanted a family of her own, and it appears that this dream will finally be realized soon.
3 Weekly reported earlier this week that Joyce’s boyfriend of three years, Canon executive Matthew Chu, had proposed to Joyce last year during their trip to New Zealand. It is reported that the couple will hold their marriage in late 2013.
As a result, Awfully Lawful <熟男有惑>, a legal comedy drama that will premiere next week, may be Joyce’s last television drama for TVB. It has been said that Joyce has decided to forgo the opportunity for a contract renewal with her mother station, and will put full focus on being a wife and a mother.
Joyce’s ex-boyfriend of nine years, former Armed Reaction <陀槍師姐> costar Marco Ngai (魏駿傑), reacted negatively towards the rumors of Joyce’s marriage. On the mainland Chinese variety program Battle of the Sexes <男左女右>, a dating game show, Marco expressed his bitterness at the press for putting the blame on him and victimizing Joyce in their breakup.
On why he ended up breaking up with Joyce in 2007, Marco said, “I dated her for many years. We were a couple on screen and off. Because of that, the audience thought we were really compatible. But then if I don’t marry her, I’ll end up being called the sinner, the bad guy.”
Marco also shared, “I did some research, and statistics state that those who chose to marry after three years of dating had a higher divorce rate than those who have flash marriages.” Marco then added, “So I think that those who don’t do flash marriages are wrong.”
Marco also hinted that had he and Joyce married, they would probably end up in divorce anyway.
Joyce was not at all disturbed by Marco’s statements, and in a brief phone interview with 3 Weekly, the former singer hinted that Marco was using her for promotion. “I’m not embarrassed. Maybe the audience was curious about us. I’m not upset. Why would I be upset at someone who is not relevant to my life?”
Joyce did not confirm the rumor that she will be married soon, but assured that if it were true, she would announce it.

If he wants to trash talk his ex, it’s his right. However, I do think his agent (if he has one) needs to advise him to zip the lip because he’s obviously not doing himself any favours by opening his mouth. Because of that, the audience thought we were really compatible.” … so that tells me he knew they were not compatible, yet he stayed with her 9 years, yes she might have chosen to stay with him, but if he came out and told her after a year or two of dating, you think she would stick around for 9 years to be left for a younger woman?

Assuming the research is real and was conducted in controlled settings there are plausible factors that might explain the result.
1. the reason for flash marriages is economic by nature hence won’t as easily be affected by feelings/emotions
2. sampling bias, responsibility is the reason for the couples marrying after 3yrs.

I used to like Marco as an actor and would still prefer to watch him in a series than many of the current artists who can’t act…BUT aside from the acting piece, there’s pretty much nothing worth salvaging in him…he’s definitely a jerk no matter what he tries to say to defend himself. I lost all respect for him years ago…

Huge fan of Marco and Joyce back in the days. But, Marco is such a jerk after the break up. He’s a versatile actor and all, but he’s not off-screen. Like Joyce said, he’s probably using her for publicity.
Yeah I never really got why they were together they didn’t seem that compatible on screen I mean he started dating her when she was 18….but anyways they both moved on. I think Marco dated Joyce when she was still young. I mean, wasn’t Armed Reaction one of her first major dramas along with Kindred Spirit? She is still young in her career and in life. Compound that with the fact that she was supposed to have this romance with her co-star, I can see why she got together with him. Though I agree that Joyce has a habit of finding wrong men. Maybe she has low self-esteem, jumps into relationships too fast, or just let people walk on her?
