Most Disliked TVB Series of 2011; “My Sister of Eternal Flower” Tops List
TVB aired 25 different series in 2011. At the end of each year, in addition to the TVB Anniversary Awards selecting the best series, netizens often run their own alternative elections and vote for the “Most Disliked Series of the Year.” The top three series in this category in 2011 were My Sister of Eternal Flower <花花世界花家姐>, When Heaven Burns <天與地>, and Men With No Shadows <不速之約>.
Charmaine Sheh and Raymond Lam in Two of Three Most Disliked Series
Over 200 people took part in the voting, with each person placing a maximum of three votes. My Sister of Eternal Flower received 87 votes, thus winning the “Most Disliked Series” title. In second place was When Heaven Burns with 81 votes, and in third place was Men With No Shadows with 78 votes. In fourth place was Only You <Only You只有您> with 50 votes, and in fifth place were Super Snoops <荃加福祿壽探案> and Curse of the Royal Harem <萬凰之王> tied at 46 votes. Among the “worst” series, Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) appeared in When Heaven Burns and My Sister of Eternal Flower, while Raymond Lam (林峯) appeared in Men With No Shadows and My Sister of Eternal Flower.
Some netizens described My Sister of Eternal Flower and Men With No Shadows featuring a “team that will not lose.” In fact, Charmaine Sheh was harmed by . TMy Sister of Eternal Flowerhe broadcast before and after this series was the difference between “heaven and earth.” Prior to the broadcast of My Sister of Eternal Flower, her role as a mentally challenged individual was regarded as an acting challenges. Partnering with Raymond Lam, the series was considered to be the most anticipated series in 2011. After the broadcast, the audience felt resistant towards the story’s mentally challenged individuals. Charmaine’s role was not well-received and was subject to criticism. The average rating of the series was only 25 points.
Appearing as a “devil” character and a hypnotist in Men With No Shadows, Raymond Lam was described as “schizophrenic Chok King” by netizens. However, the ratings were not bad, averaging 27 points for the entire series while the two-hour finale averaged 32 points in ratings.
When Heaven Burns was considered to be “beyond the understanding of Hong Kong housewives.” The series was also criticized to take half an hour of material and stretching it into one hour of film format. Although When Heaven Burns secured the second spot as the “Most Disliked Series of 2011,” many netizens also supported the controversial series and defended it, “Disliking the series does not mean the series was garbage. It only means some people did not understand it.”
Attentive netizens revealed that Charmaine’s When Heaven Burns was not the lowest rated series in recent TVB history, noting that 2005’s Always Ready <隨時候命> featuring Charamine, Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健), and Bowie Lam (林保怡) only averaged 23 points in ratings. Aside from the coincidence of collaborating with Bowie Lam, both When Heaven Burns and Always Ready were broadcast on November 21st, unable to escape from the fate of low ratings.

Me too. I like most of the sereis in the top five. I loved My Sister of Eternal Flower cause I realy like how cute Charmaine was in her role. And that was exactly what people were complaining about. =( I didn’t watch the full Men With No Shadow series, but I think the drama is quite interesting. And I don’t think Ray was purposely trying to Chok, but he is a hypnotist in the series, so the way he looks at people to hypnotise them is very important. I also heard that When Heaven Burns has a very good and realistic story. I think I’ll like to watch that one. I didn’t really like Super Snoops and Only You. But Super Snoops was kinda funny.

Charmaine’s series like CBML and BTROC got top ratings in their year. So, this ‘ratings poison’ label is unfounded.

Many more “stars” in BTROC so obviously people don’t only watch it because of her. Replace her with another fadan and i think the show would still be great.
She should however take responsibility together with Raymond in Sister Fa as they are the only lead.
CBML and BTROC were both grand productions that had a lot of veterans and star power.
With Sister Fa, the only two leads are raymond and Charmaine so the responsibility of the ratings rely on them. She’s had lowest ratings of the year for a while. Not just a few like other artists. “Always Ready” “When Easterly Showers Fall on the Sunny West” “Word Twisters’ Adventures”
So Charmaine’s high rating in Maiden Vows (only lead) won’t be counted? Hmmm.
If that I can say KC is also rating poison because Devil’s Description (is it name this?) and Life Art were the lowest and voted trashest series in the year the series are aired? KC is the example because he is the “saint” of 2011 lol.
Bonus point: The actors make the series ALL themselves? The scriptwriter, the director, timeslot shouldn’t have the blame for a bad series? So I suggest Tim Sir to stop complaining on why rating of BP isn’t high because BP’s rating ALL credit to the artists. Same way, Tim Sir shouldn’t have any credit for No Regrets and Rosy Business.
People love to trash Charmaine for whatever reason — and the reasons are usually always unfounded.

Her acting was bad in that series. Can’t blame it on the script because Roger kwok played a similar character and won tvb king – twice. So no one can blame the story not liked by the audience. Charmaine tried to copy Roger and it was bad.

Not too true. DOL is in top 10 of rating of 2006. Its peak is 40. And in China, its rating was the highest of this year with 1.67 (revealed that BBJX is considered as a new record of rating with 1.72). MSOEF isn’t in top 5 of lowest rating of 2011, means there are more 5 series with lower rating than this one. So overall, only LWOLAP is true to low rating, but it’s higher than a series of Dayo Wong. So in fact, Charmaine’s bad rating fate isn’t too bad.
Whenever the focus is on Charmaine the ratings are bad.
How is Mainden Vows? Its rating is in top 3 of 2005 (lower than LFD and FAS only).
How is You’re Hired? She is the female lead. Its rating was high.
Seriously, be fair to Charmaine. Everyone has peak and dip in rating. Look at Sheren and Bobby. Their combo in a series didn’t lead to high rating at all even both of them often have high rating series.

So who can deny her acting is bad? Her portrayal in that series was bad. There was a lot of negative against her acting and not just the script. The minute tvb stops promoting Charmaine her ratings drop. Charmaine always gets a series in a good time slot so naturally the series will have better ratings. But this year charmaine has two series in a bad time slot and no promotions then her ratings drop. If her acting is so good then the rating should reflect it. Look at Steven ma, a lot of his series are aired in the worst possible time slot so his series are always lower than it deserves. But this year he has a medicore series in a better time slot and it received 40 points at it’s peak. So ratings means nothing. It never meant anything. Just because a series has high rating doesnt mean it was the best series or it had good acting.

It’s your opinion that her acting is bad. That’s a subjective judgment. I don’t think her acting is bad and neither of us are wrong. But this article talk about “most disliked” series and people claim she is rating poison. She has both good and bad rating shows. But of course, when they are bad, they are always her fault and when they are good, it’s never attributed to her.
No single actor is so good that it can win in ratings on that basis alone. Roger is an amazing actor – most people agree – and he was brilliant in WAW – yet it received shitty ratings. And most people also agree it wasn’t a very good show overall. If ratings is not a measure of acting quality then what is your basis for claiming she’s bad actress? Your opinion. JUST your opinion. Her acting was dissed in MSOEF yes – but then it was also praised in WHB so which is correct? And is an actress always delivering exact the same quality regardless of script/costars/direction/production/etc. ?
Ratings can only claim which show is being watched, it doesn’t translate to that show/series being “good”. When’s the last time people would ONLY watch the BEST series? You watch what’s available or you don’t. You wouldn’t go DIGGING for the BEST series. There’s many factors that goes into what makes a show “popular” or “good”. Promotions, good time slots, good cast, etc. A good example would be Twilight the movie franchise. It does well in box office but it doesn’t mean it had good acting, good scripting or it was a good movie. Most would agree that it had a good marketing strategy along, lots of promotions and an eye catching cast. Sure, it may be subjective. But if the book is actually banned in a lot of school libraries, then there’s something wrong with it.
As for Charmaine being rating poison, sure she may be an easy target for that statement. But if her acting had the slightest market value to TVB in that series, they will milk on that. Prime example, Ms.Koo. She has ONE “good” scene and there’s going to be another series based on that. Laughing was the only more “interesting” character in EU, he has a whole franchise around it. 2 movies and another series. It doesn’t matter if his acting was good or not, it has a market value. Charmaine’s acting/character in that series has no market value, so TVB does nothing.
You can defend Charmaine all you want, it doesn’t change anything. It’s just double standard when people say Charmaine is an easy target when ratings goes down and it’s not HER fault. But those exact same people would ALWAYS blame the script and it’s not HER fault either. Funny.
Many hollywood actresses have been called ratings poison in the past. Katharine Hepburn & Nicole Kidman. It doesn’t mean that their acting is bad. It’s just that their script choices doesn’t resonant with box office success.
Exactly. I think Forbes Magazine calculated that Nicole almost makes a LOSS for every $ she is paid. But that’s because many of her films are indies which are not as well-received as big blockbusters. Many Oscar-winning films don’t do well in the cinema – only after the awards will people watch them – possibly because of the awards.

Eternal Flower takes the cake for sure. Can’t stand it…couldn’t even watch a full episode without pressing the forward button the entire time lolz

I didn’t really watch much of TVB series this year, since mainland keeps coming out with so many good ones. However I was very unfortunate , I did watch sister of internal flower, and I wound have to agree one of the worst series ever watch , next to Devil Disciple back then.
Gave up WHB and SS after 1. episode as i found it a waste of time. Managed to fast forward Only You and the other i didn’t even bother as i already knew i wouldn’t like it.
TVB scriptwriters must be too busy betting on horses as the can even fail stealing ideas from other series and jap. manga, LOL
Not really a surprise that Charmaine series got low ratings as her acting skills is only average and without a good story and supporting cast to help her out she will fail for sure. Wonder how long it will take the audience to figure out how bad she really is?
As for Raymond he seems to focus more on movies and singing such as “chok” LOL. Seriously his acting is detoriating fast, however im sure 620 will do everything in her power to help him out.
Yeah, TVB scriptwriters this year stealing a lot of ideas from other series and Japanese manga.
For example: Getto Justice stole quite a lot from the cases in Partners (Korean series). Wax and Wane was kinda similar to an old ATV series that I’ve just watched (have Amy Chan). Only you inspired by a manga called “My best neighbour under the same roof”.
I watched two eps of WHB and gave up watching it. Watched it for Charmaine, but the pace was way too slow, and imo, everyone looked way older than their age in the drama. Sooo boring =(
Out of the top 5 most disliked series, the only one I managed to finish was Men With No Shadows. I watched it for the cast, and was able to finish it because of the cast. However, the plot itself was not interesting at all. Seemed like some twisted version of Twilight. I can understand why it received such poor ratings, probably due to the fact that it’s not enjoyable for all age groups.
I watched MSOEF to see Charmaine’s acting. It was mediocre, and the plot was again not that interesting. Got bored and gave up.
Never bothered to watch OY or SS.
Well MSOEF was kind of boring. The storyline was not exciting or interesting.
WHB was also not my type of drama, too many flashbacks and all….
MSOEF was pretty darn bad yet I could take it better because it was all comic relief. I didn’t think it was as slapstick as CBML and its ilk. However, the storyline was a mess and the characters – most importantly, Charmaine’s was not properly defined. And that was problematic in judging whether her acting was appropriate or not. Raymond was lazy but he has easy chemistry with Charmaine. OTOH, their romantic pairing was also a HUGE mistake because what grown up man would fall in love with a child?
I’m afraid I didn’t watch the other shows topping the list. It’s been a horrid year and most shows never appealed enough for me to even start watching. I don’t get OY on the list though, since I thought it was pretty good. Not outstanding, but very stable in quality.
Well, Ray was a grown up man in the sereis, but he was one that didn’t have a grown up brain, so it was ok for both not too grown up people to be together. And I’m sure there are actual people in this world like Charmaine in the sereis, who marry cause they are humans too and have feelings of love too, so they do wanna marry.
My most disliked series in 2011 is Links to Temptation.
Out of the top 5 most disliked, I think MWNS is worst. I actually like WHB and Only You. The other 2 are okay.
Just looking at the picture with Charmaine’s hair already annoyed the heck out of me so there’s no need to freaking tried the drama…LOL…I used to love Charmaine alot in the old days with Steven Ma in Perish in the name of Love (?!) and Country Spirit, but now, she’s look like she’s gotten so older and her acting has really not improved at all…
I can not believe they forgot to mention Forensic Heroes III, that series is garbage from start to finish. Wax and Wane and Grace Under Fire should get the honor as well, in the dislike series of 2011.

I Thought one of the best series I watched this year was Wax and Wane. I know many people didn’t like FH3, but I thought it was ok and not as bad as what most people say.

I LIKED Only you! I thought it was something new and fresh! Curse of Royal Harem wasn’t bad, there were much more that was worse than this… Otherwise the rest of this top 5 I also dislike.

Ratings would probably be a better measure of what was most disliked (adjusted for time slots etc.) and obv. ratings weren’t good for MSOEF either so there’s no denying the show is very disliked. But the absolutely no. 1? By netizens perhaps, by the population? Not necessarily.

I have weird taste then, I actually though WHB had a pretty good storyline, just that it kept dragging on and on (very courageous step for TVB to go for morality as the theme). I must say the worst drama was definitely Links to Temptation… (that was so bad). I thought only you was pretty good, except for the stupid ending (I seriously thought that it was just a joke she died, until i realized it was actually legit). Wax and wane was okay (the Roger and Kate chemistry made it interesting), but Sunny totally ruined it for me. He ruins every show that he is in. I personally did not like curse of harem as much because of him and myolie’s awkward acting

No, I wouldnt say Sunny ruins in every series which TVB consider him as warehoused series king. He did great in 2009 on A Chip Off The Old Block.
Yes, I loved that series. I thought the best part of that sereis was the theme song. “Luw Ha San Sew Huw Ah”. I made my aunt and grandma use that as their ring tone. LOLs My grandma is still using it now cause she likes how it’s loud enough.
Pls give Charmaine a good rest for time being, all her acting & series are good, except for MSOEF! Charmaine not suit for this kind of acting in MSOEF, so I guess they had choosen wrong actress to act this series kua..

If Charmine has a brain, she could have reject this series if it is too challenging, which it is! Her role was really awful including the story. Charmine is on a see-saw from time to time, can be good or can be bad…. lately it is bad.

The full script often dun be given to the artists when they are invited. Moreover, at this moment Charmaine is still a contractual artist and her contract dun allow her to choose series at this moment.

I also like Linda. The girl has serious acting chops, it is TVB holding her back. Give her some unconventional role, she can do it. And if her voice is annoying, fine, give her a mute role.
I think Linda looks good when crying (and among TVB main lead now she looks the best when crying) BUT her face can’t show enough required emotions to any situation. Mean she can’t go to the last point of acting and reserved herself in the middle. Charmaine was bad, but recent years, she sometimes can make herself in this last point of acting and showed enough emotions required for her role at this moment.
Linda can’t put in some of Charmaine’s “easy roles” with her current acting. For example, Linda can’t do the change face from evil to pitiful after a second like what Charmaine did in DOL (the scene she saw Wah Chun Pong and Bing Yi went to a wedding shop).
So overall, I think Charmaine is a better actress than Linda. Maybe more experienced Linda can do it but at this moment, she still can’t.
Uhm, I’m not a fan of Charmaine nor her roles, but I blv her acting is good.

not watched MV the others you mentioned check. I was “forced” to watch her in Flying Fox, Crimson sable, HSDS etc since i am a huge fan of the wuxia genre. She was utterly rubbish!
Sure she has improved over the years which artist would given all the chance in the world. Still to this day i only find her ordinary nothing special.
Linda was not great in the beginning like her series with the beast Benny. However her acting improved greatly esp. in JOL

Charmaine is not a bad actress but her recent acting didnt get any praising. It could be due to the roles given to her was bad. But I agree with Josie that Charmaine was good in Country Spirit, I almost forgot about that series.

pretty accurate list, in my opinion. “my sister” was absolutely waste of time watching. didn’t even bother with the others after a few episodes. only exception would be curse of royal haream, which i thought was decent.
Noway, MSOEF was really great!! :O I can’t see any problems with that series. Charmaine did a great job and Raymond too. It’s not easy to play a girl with intellectual disabilities, but Charmaine did it perfect. I don’t think others actresses would do it better than her. And I like the storyline too. Can’t understands why so many people dislike it.. :/

all of the news,we can pick out the two name Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) and Raymond Lam (林峯) because most of the criticism but you should look back:Are all their mistakes? the content of “my sister” is quite old and not special.MWNS is ok but the end of it was not really good,the ratting was also no prolem.It’s not fair to convict them.An actor can’t make a serie.combination of actor with the director,script,and many things else make a series.

IMO, that last decent series she has was in 2009; You’re Hired (絕代商驕)
The same could be said for many other TVB actors simply because the overall quality level of TVB shows have decreased.

Her series are also usually overhyped, so it leaves me a stronger impression.

Which other Charmaine shows were overhyped aside from CBML and BTROC? And were they overhyped because of Charmaine or because of their big casts? In fact, if I recall correctly, BTROC was hyped because of Tavia, NOT Charmaine. It was Tavia’s show. It was Tavia who disappointed. CBML was hyped because it was a “sequel” to BTROC in terms of casting. And the years previously were all about HOG and MR – neither shows that has Charmaine.
When did I blame Charmaine for her bad series? That wasn’t the intention of my comment. I’m only saying that I usually find her series to be among the worst of the year, and I said “in my opinion”. Never said it was her responsibility. Also never said the hype was because of her.
But CBML and BTROC were not her only overhyped series. These two were just more recent. If you go back, she was in Forensic Heroes 2, Maiden’s Vow, Dance of Passion, The Drive of Life. Some were not as hyped as HOG or MR, but still more hyped than the average series nonetheless. And I don’t remember thinking any of the series were good. I didn’t even like War and Beauty as much as everyone else.
Thinking back, the last series with Charmaine that I liked was The Point of No Return – almost ten years ago. So if I think Charmaine has been in bad series for the last decade, it’s only my honest opinion.

MSOEF wasn’t the worst. It had its funny and sad moments. MWNS was horrible. So was Links to Temptation (which I skipped after the first or second episode). Can’t believe OY is on there ! It was one of my favourite series this year. 😐

I have to blame “My Sister of Eternal Flower” for causing the ratings to decrease, leading to air the best series of 2011 (IMO), Ghetto Justice.
Quality Control really sucks at TeeVeeBee.
I disliked the following TVB series
(in no particular order):
– Only you
– Relic of an emissary
– Wax and Wane
– River of wine
– Super Snoops
– Links to temptation
– A great way to care
– Grace under fire
– Lives of omission
– When heaven burns
Lucky I didn’t watch to many TVB series this year then lol! Oh wait I did watch 5 eps of wax and wane, it was okay, but didn’t really care to finish it. I also watch 9 ep of Grace too, but didn’t care to finish it either. It was not that interesting for me. I thought Lives of omission was good?
I gave up on TVB series a few years ago. Just read the comments and saw that I was right to do so. Hopefully next year will be a great year for Hong Kong dramas since there will be a few other stations participating in the game.
My most hated series in 2011 would be Men Without Shadows.
When Heaven Burns happens to be my favourite series of the year although I do admit that conventional viewers will not be able to enjoy the series that much. On the other hand, I also enjoy watching Bottled Passion but I like WHB more 🙂

The worst TVB drama is man with no shadow ,because the storyline look more like cartoon ,the best is Ghetto justice ,Raymond Lam shall give ways to Kevin Cheng.
hhmmm……this is all due to tvb have a bad script writer n plus i found out is hk ppl thinking a bit trandistional coz they only like to watch love o revenge those movie!!to them WHB n Men no shodows is a bad show coz they dont understand the drama…..but i jz wan to ask any one here understand what is wong kar wai movie o not??oscar winner director wong kar wai also can win award that is becoz his movie is vote by whole world not only in hk….thats the diff!!!XD
MWNS is failed because its idea is good but the way the scriptwriter expanded this idea is kinda greedy and not mature enough. It’s like a mess to a good idea. Pity through.
Same to WHB. It’s pretty hard to understand to ppl who only watch series for entertaining purposes.
You can say MWNS is a mess and not mature enough. But, it’s not the same case with WHB. WHB is not a mess and certainly not immature.
WHB is a well scripted and executed series. It’s just not suitable for viewers who prefer excitement and spoonfeeding.
MWNS and WHB ‘failed’ for different reasons and cannot be lumped together.
Same to WHB I referred to the good idea.

The only series i actually like is “Til Love Do Us Lie”…although it consist of many newbies its ok to watch…others are a bit wierd with stupid story lines..

More like, least watched or most forgettable. If you think about it, you can only hate something if you remember it. A great way to care is a warehouse series. People may not have watched it this year.
Dropping by cloud nine is a mini-series airing at different time slot from prime time.
Things that are popular will gain more fans and by extension haters as well.
A great way to care aired in HK :). It’s warehoused first then aired on TVB in Jan time, if I rmb rite. Its rating isn’t bad.

Why worry? China has a huge thriving torrent sharing sites.
Heard that its concept isn’t allowed by China government.

Bingo! Me too! I only watch it for Bobby, LF, Mandy Wong, Gigi Wong, Sire Ma, basically everyone except TY. TY is the reason why I think MWNS is worst of all worst in 2011. Satisfy? LOL.
MSOEF sucks. Charmaine also sucks in this series as the title role. One of her worst performance.
I have to put up Links to Temptation as my least liked series of the year, followed by MWNS. LTT very poorly contructed plot and average acting. Everbody seems to be sleeping in MWNS, it was unhappiest performance I have ever seen Bobby put up. There was no joy or satire or inside joke to clamor for.
MSEF was not bad, I thought TVB did a terrible job of marketing the show as a woman stuck with mind of 12 yr old but it was really more of a case of mild to mid form of autism. (I hate Square Pegs, btw).
When Heaven Burns is excellent – when all is said and done, 10 years later I will remember WHB like I remember Threshold of an Era or Golden Faith, but I will not recall one scene from the other so called top 10 of the last 5 years.
Well even a very popular series will disliked by the minority, while a bad series will be liked by the majority and still liked by some people. For example, back in the 80s, I really liked the Other Side of the Horizon, however, many disliked that series.
My Sister of Eternal Flower was extremely original and interesting while Men with No Shadows contained many meaningful themes. Both dramas are one of my favorites and the acting in them were definitely not bad.
i loved all the dramas that charmaine did but since she left there would be no more of those dramas.i only liked watching the dramas where she is coupled up with kevin chend or raymond lam :)just my opinion….
i wish that kevin or raymond would date her…..

I agree that that Sister Flower and MWNS were really bad series and deserved to be on the list. However, I enjoyed Only You very much and I think WHB is a very high quality production. I find it very well executed and filmed with a lot of thought put into it, not hurriedly wrapped up like LOO and FH3. Every camera angle used in WHB has some meaning to it to convey the character’s situation and position and I think it was cleverly executed. But, I can understand why the audience did not like it since they like the “loud” series where there needs to be a climax and argument in every episode.

I agree. Disliking WHB dosen’t mean that other people will too. I am just like every other audience, and it does not make me barf. It just makes me shrug, and continue to watch. TVB dramas may be good, or bad, but we can’t judge how people make their dramas, cuz we are not much better than the directors, or writers. We are audience. Without us, they are useless. But don’t forget, without them, we won’t be typing all comments. Right???
I think that WHB is disgusting to some people for some scenes, but so far, I haven’t barfed or be disgusted. I just shrug and keep watching. We have no right to judge the writers for what they write because some people in the crowd have no right to judge them. Without us, the crew and all will be useless, but without them, we wouldn’t be doing comments , right???? Just sayin.
For me I actually enjoined WHB. I thought Charmaine’s acting in this drama was incredible, and I’m not that into her as an actress. But in this drama I thought she played it really well as a girl who lost someone she love. The storyline was interesting to me too. I’m actually surprised with all the negativity towards this drama. Sister Flower was…egh though.
