The Woman Behind Jackson Lai

They say that behind every great man, there is a great woman. In the case of Jackson Lai (黎振燁), this definitely holds true.

The 32-year-old TVB actor has the spotlight recently, with his performance in OMG, Your Honour <是咁的,法官閣下> receiving much praise from audiences. According to Jackson, he couldn’t have done any of it without the support of his wife.

Jackson’s public declaration of love for his wife is not a new thing. In 2016, when he was competing for (and won) the Mr Hong Kong crown, he left a particularly favorable impression with audiences and voters by publicly thanking and speaking about his love for her. In fact, some may argue that the most entertaining part of the show was when the host asked him what he was most afraid his wife would do, and his reply was that it would be if she wouldn’t let him kiss her. When asked whether he had planned this, he laughed and said, “I couldn’t help it, because this is really my only talent. I actually felt really awkward, talking about my wife and relationship so publicly. But the show organizers told me that I just needed to show the audience who I was, and that seemed to make sense.”

According to Jackson, he would not have achieved all that he has today without the support of his wife, whom he started dating during high school. But it wasn’t an easy road for them. Having aspired to enter the entertainment industry as a student, Jackson decided give up on his career as a fashion designer, and to apply for TVB’s actor training program at the age of 22. He was accepted, but then had to face the hurdle of persuading his wife (then girlfriend at the time) that it was a good idea: “I had to explain to her that TVB had accepted me into their actor training program. When she heard it, it was just silence. At that time, it was a real challenge for the both of us, and we entered into a bit of a cold war. In my first month of the training program, it seemed like we would break up, as she did not understand my decision and felt I was being vain.”

But as time would tell, after seeing Jackson’s dedication in studying and learning how to become a better actor, his wife gradually realized how serious he was about being part of the entertainment business: “She saw that I wasn’t being conceited, and that I really wanted to become an actor. She slowly started to accept and then support me. When it came to entering Mr. Hong Kong, she helped me complete the application form.”

In addition to crediting his wife for his career successes, Jackson also revealed that he has always felt that he and his wife got married too casually (as they decided against holding a banquet or taking any wedding photos), and he owes her for this too. When asked how he would compensate, his reply was another credit to him: “I’ve already started compensating her – all my salary goes directly into her account without passing through my hands. I’m not afraid to tell others that it’s all up to her to manage as she sees fit. It’s enough if I have some pocket money, as long as it’s enough for transport and meals.”
