Vincent Zhao Puts Behind Dispute with Donnie Yen; Vincent Invited to Appear in “Ip Man” TV Drama

In March, Vincent Zhao (赵文卓) blasted Donnie Yen (甄子丹) publicly for his domineering ways on the set of Special Identity <特殊身份>. After being forced out of the movie project, Vincent felt indignant and lambasted the film’s production crew for their unethical conduct. Although both parties considered the option to sue, Vincent’s anger appeared to have quieted down, putting his dispute with Donnie Yen behind him.

Vincent did not regret airing his disagreement with Donnie Yen publicly. He said, “I did what I was supposed to and was grateful for all the support received.”  After venting and expressing his injustice publicly, Vincent did not dwell on further destructive feelings. Last week, at the 19th Annual Student Film Festival awards ceremony, Vincent said, “This incident is already in the past. My current spirits are quite good.”

Vincent also announced that he will be partaking in several Chinese-American collaborations in the future.

However, were fan discussions regarding Donnie and Vincent’s dispute ready to end yet? The martial arts stars’ rivalry have sparked heated debate in online communities, especially on Weibo, causing divisions among Vincent Zhao versus Donnie Yen’s fan camps.

Furthermore, current plans were underway to produce an Ip Man <叶问> TV drama in mainland China. Director Fan Xiaotian (范小天) indicated that he had the intention to invite Vincent Zhao to star in the drama, although the final casting for the titular character has not been decided yet. The drama is slated to begin filming in June 2012, with a broadcast date in 2013.

Jayne: It would be ironic if Vincent Zhao were to appear in the “Ip Man” TV drama, although it appears as if the director may invite him to play another character and not the role of Ip Man.

Perhaps the drama will focus on Ip Man in his younger years and feature a younger star. I just saw Wu Chun in “My Kingdom” and he has such magnetism; physically he might suit the role well.

  1. Gosh, as if the yipploitation isn’t already over-milked… Come one script writers, let’s be more creative and explore other interesting characters.

  2. I’m saving Ip Man room in my brain for Grandmasters, then that is it!

  3. I really don’t care because I’m not going to watch this.

  4. ROFL they really invite Vincent! the irony! LOL

  5. Yah, this is good. Two martial artistes, hunky, real men… no point squabbling like petty girls.

I’m glad they are both alright now.

  6. Glad that Vincent has moved on. He doesn’t seem like the type that would hold grudges. It would be ironic if he was in the series version. But then again, not really since the circle is like business… I don’t think anyone wants to be enemies forever. You would see them here and there so it would be hard to avoid them.

  7. Vincent support you all the way even before i was donkey donnie fans.. i and all my friends will boycott seeing donkey donnie films anymore…Teach him lesson…

    1. yeh that’s right – we were talking about it in the other article. “wouldn’t it be funny if they got vincent zhao to play ip man.”… it’ll be quite ironic haha the fans will go beserk though. donnie fans throw eggs at him.

    2. Yerp LOL we were talking and joking about it before! Irony if this is true! LOL

  8. The title on this article is a bit misleading as it reads as if the invitation has already been sent. According to the director in the article, however, he’s just thinking about it.

“Director Fan Xiaotian (范小天) indicated that he had the intention to invite Vincent Zhao to star in the drama, although the final casting for the titular character has not been decided yet. The drama is slated to begin filming in June 2012, with a broadcast date in 2013.”

That sounds more like the media asked the director specifically if he’d invite Vincent to try for the part, and the Director provided the typical safe “anything is possible response” and then stated “nothing is decided.”

  9. Kinda disappointed Vincent Zhao won’t be in the movie anymore. We are surely going to miss an epic on screen battle. Huge loss for fans everywhere.
