Who Will Be 2019’s TV King and Queen Contenders?

The 2019 TVB Anniversary Awards is about a month away, and although TVB hasn’t unveiled its list of nominees yet, netizens and TV goers alike already have some top five contenders in mind.

TV King Top 5

Traditionally, the top five nominees for Best Actor and Best Actress would be the actors who have starred in the year’s most popular and critically successful dramas. This year, the top five TV King contenders will most likely be Vincent Wong (王浩信) from The Man Who Kills Trouble <解決師>, Joel Chan (陳山聰) from Barrack O’Karma <今宵大廈>, Roger Kwok (郭晉安) from Big White Duel <白色強人>, and Kenneth Ma (馬國明), also from Big White Duel.

The Man Who Kills Trouble is this year’s anniversary drama, which is once again led by Vincent, who was 2017’s TV King. An action-packed drama, Vincent nearly lost his nose doing a fight scene for the show.

“It was around six in the morning, so we weren’t in our best shape,” he said. “I got punched in the nose. It wouldn’t stop bleeding, to the point where the blood back flowed to my mouth, and I was spitting out blood. My nose was very swollen, and I was concerned that the shape got altered. Fortunately, none of that happened. The swelling went away in a week.”

Vincent regards The Man Who Kills Trouble as his most action-packed series. “I definitely have the most fight choreography in this show,” he said. Vincent had also starred in last year’s anniversary drama Fist Fight <兄弟>. “I did most of the fight scenes, including the ones where I wore a mask. I asked the action choreographer to use me as much as he could, and he held onto his word. I would say I did at least 85 percent of the stunts.”

A broken nose wasn’t the only thing Vincent had to suffer through. For his role, an assassin turned P.E. teacher, Vincent had to gain 15 pounds halfway into the series. “The producer originally suggested that I change my hairstyle, but that’s not enough. An assassin should be skinnier, while a teacher doesn’t need to look as fit. To gain all that weight, I ate five full meals a day. The hardest thing that was I still had to make up some earlier scenes, so we had to change my shape with camera angles.”

Vincent isn’t the only popular contender. Roger Kwok from this summer’s Big White Duel remains to be an awards regular. There’s a good chance that the three-time TV King winner will break a record, becoming the first actor to win the honor a fourth time. Nonetheless, the ever modest Roger said he has tough competition. “There’s a lot of people that will be nominated in the first round, so I have confidence. However, what I find most important is that the audiences have fun watching our shows. Right now, my priority is to film good new shows. I don’t want to put pressure on myself. (Who do you want to win?) Of course Kenneth Ma! He did really well in Big White Duel. I also support Shaun Tam (譚俊彥)!”

TV Queen Top 5

Compared to TV King, the top five for TV Queen is an easier gamble. Film queen Kara Hui (惠英紅) is likely to sweep awards, thanks to the critically-successful The Defected <鐵探> that aired earlier this year. 2017’s TV Queen Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) and Vincent’s costar in The Man Who Kills Trouble said she has “no chance” against the veteran actress.

“I surrender,” she said with a laugh. “I’m definitely better on Kara to win this year.”

In regard to the criticism on her acting, she said, “I know I had a lot of room left for improvement. That’s why when I shot Big White Duel, I really used 200% of my effort to understand my role, to become my role. I don’t want to think too much about awards. It’s never been something I considered.”

Besides Kara, Joel Chan’s Barrack O’Karma costar Selena Lee (李施嬅) is also a hot favorite to win. The 38-year-old could not contain her excitement and gratitude upon hearing the support of audiences. “I’m so thankful to the viewers and the netizens for their continuous support,” she said. “I’m so touched and happy. I consider that winning already! As for the award, of course I’d be happy if I won it. It’ll be a perfect ending, but that is beyond my control.”

Mandy Wong (黃智雯) from My Life As Loan Shark <街坊財爺>, who won TV Queen in Singapore last year, said she supports both Kara and her good friend Selena to win. “I really admired Kara’s explosive performance and I definitely support Selena. She was gorgeous on the show!”

  1. Who wrote this article? ‘Vincent nearly lost a nose in a fight scene’. From a punch? So all boxers and combat fighters have no noses then….

  2. Surprised they didn’t mention Philip Keung as a contender. I know he isn’t a TVB artist, but he is a quite known.

And is Roger rooting for Shaun Tam for the Justice Pao series? I have 2 episodes left and can’t seem to finish that one.

It’s nice to see Selena getting some recognition. She won’t win, but top 5 is so much better than before. Sad, how she only gets the crumbs.

Natalie is either really lucky or a great networker to be in all the big series. She still is uninspiring, unfortunately.

    1. @potatochip Philip Keung deserves BA more than everyone else on the list IMO. Wonder if his back hurts from carrying that entire series. I know a lot of people think Kara is a good actress and I think she’s had her moments in some of her other work but I thought her acting was awful in The Defected and she wasn’t convincing at all in her role.

Benjamin was just ok. I think he should stick to less serious roles because he already looks wooden to begin with so without any added jokes or humor, his acting comes off even more flat.

Dicky was entertaining in The Learning Curve of a Warlord. Wouldn’t be mad if he won but probably not going to happen. Actually thought most of the cast in that drama did a slightly above average job.

    1. @wm2017 Yes, I’m a die-hard Vincent fan. Knew he wouldn’t disappoint in his latest series. I had my hesitations regarding the producer, but I’m now hooked to his drama. Hope the momentum keeps going.

      Vincent Wong FTW!

  3. This list is so bias.

Benjamin Yuen is definitely going to be nominated for BA this year. That guy went through so much for his role in Defected TVB is obviously going to include him.

I’d put Alice Chan before Natalie, who is such a bore.
If TVB is fair for once, Selena should win BA.

    1. @bubbles23 Benjamin went through a lot and I commend him for losing weight and looking sickly, but his overall performance was dull. It was an award winning role, but not performance. He will likely get Top 5, though.

  4. its amazing that roger kwok is still there on tvb to fight for tvb king anno 2019. i remember when i was a child in the ’80ties he was already a first line tvb actor. his acting has really improved through the years. i hope he can break the record.

  5. A lot of people hate on Natalie, but I actually have a soft spot for her. This wasn’t always the case; I used to think she’s bland, boring and rigid. But she changed my mind when she starred in Short End of the Stick. It really depends on the role she gets. She seems to do better in comedies than Mary Sue roles, but after getting Best Actress, she got typecasted into characters that lack dynamic personalities (which is usually true for all the ladies who win BA)

  6. Hmm, don’t really have a pick for best actor or actress right now, but I love the contenders that are being considered right now. Unlike a lot of people, I really like Natalie Tong so I wouldn’t mind her winning again. And I’ve also always loved Selena, so it’d be nice seeing her get BA for Barrack O’Karma! I don’t think it’s necessarily her strongest role but I still liked it. It’d be great to see Kara win though. (:

  7. Can’t believe people are still talking about who will win. Does the TVB awards even carry any significance anymore?
