Xiao Zhan and Wu Xuanyi’s “Douluo Continent” Breaks 200 Million Views

Fantasy novel-based Chinese drama Douluo Continent <斗罗大陆> is showing great promise with its strong ratings and topping the trending list within three days of its release on CCTV-8 Channel. Starring Xiao Zhan (also known as Sean Xiao 肖戰), Wu Xuanyi (吳宣儀), Kenny Bee (钟镇涛), and Calvin Chen (辰亦儒), the series boasts a powerhouse of stars with high commercial value. Hence, the heated attention is thanks to the actors’ large group of supporters and the novel’s fanbase established in 2009.

Adapted from a novel of the same name, Douluo Continent follows the story of 16-year-old prodigy Tang San (played by Xiao Zhan), who is sent to Ruoding Academy to develop his skills and become a great soul master. There, he befriends orphan Xiao Wu (played by Xuanyi), and they become each other’s ride or die after going through struggles together in the process of cultivation. Their tutor Yu Xiaogang later sends them to another academy to further improve their skills. They meet five other talented geniuses from different schools there and form a team known as the Seven Devils. They cultivate their powers while fighting scheming forces together.

According to sources, the ratings skyrocketed after the premiere. The drama amassed about 200 million views in a mere two days, proving that there is huge potential waiting to be uncovered. It may even potentially exceed the popularity of the animation, which achieved 16 billion views.

Production Team Apologizes for Plagiarism

Despite high viewership, Douluo Continent was accused of plagiarism after netizens noticed that some scenes bore a strong similarity to the special effects of League of Legends‘s Jhin and Canadian TV show Dark Matter. In light of these speculations, the production team directly admitted to their mistake with an official apology letter. They did not explain anymore, likely in fear the issue will snowball further into a bigger deal and impact the show’s progress.

  2. Must be me, but the plot sound extremely stupid and generic. It is every other fantasy series from China these days. And who are we kidding only reason this series is going to be popular is because of Xiao Zhan.

    1. @seriously It is a good production that was shelved for year, would not be aired if it was not because Xiao Zhan became famous after untamed. I doubt he was put up such projects anymore. Everyone has to start somewhere…
