Fans of Zanilia Zhao (赵丽颖) have accused Yang Mi (杨幂) for plagiarizing a Princess Agents <特工皇妃楚乔传> character poster, but it didn’t take long for Yang Mi’s side to pull out an Uno Reverse Card.
Recently, upcoming Chinese period drama Novoland: Pearl Eclipse <九州·斛珠夫人> starring Yang Mi and William Chan (陳偉霆) unveiled a new set of character posters, one which included Yang Mi’s character Fang Haishi dressed in a male attire and holding up a bow and arrow. The poster resembles a poster for 2017’s Princess Agents starring Zanilia Zhao, in which Zanilia’s character Chu Xiao similarly holds up a bow and arrow while looking fiercely ahead of her.
The similar posters immediately evoked the ire of Zanilia’s fans, accusing Yang Mi, who also produces Pearl Eclipse, for plagiarism.
Their accusations, however, were immediately quashed down by Yang Mi’s fans. They explained that in the Pearl Eclipse novel, Fang Haishi is a character who excels in shooting arrows, and several important scenes in the novel showcase this fact.
They also added that the novel 11 Chu Te Gong Huang Fei <11处特工皇妃>, the novel which Princess Agents was adapted from, actually had a record of plagiarism. It was Xiao Ruse (蕭如瑟), the author of Pearl Eclipse, who had sued Princess Agents author Xiao Xiang Dong Er (潇湘冬儿) for copying several ideas in her work. Xiao Ruse won the case, and Xiao Xiang Dong Er had to apologize and pay over 50,000 yuan. If fans have to argue about which came first, the clear winner would be Pearl Eclipse.
Pearl Eclipse is set in the Novoland world, a fictional universe that has spawned over 30 books. The first television drama set in this world was 2015’s Hua Xu Yin: City of Desperate Love <九州·华胥引>.
