“A Great Way to Care 2” Rape Scene Compared to “The Rapist”

TVB drama, A Great Way to Care 2 <仁心解碼II>, premiered in Hong Kong on Monday night to critical success. The medical crime drama sequel briefly tantalized viewers by recycling old actors from its previous installment, but criticism on TVB’s lack of personnel was quickly forgotten after the broadcast of the premiere episode. Something more sensational has caught the viewers’ eyes.

The first episode introduces a serial rape case starring Dickson Li (李家聲). Dickson, who portrays telecommunication salesman Lai Kai Pang, brutally rapes and kills a high school student portrayed by Tina Shek (石天欣). Pang had committed similar crimes before, but because he was diagnosed with dissociate identity disorder at the time, his penalty sentence was light.

After proven to have recovered from the disorder, Pang returns to the work force. A few months later, Pang goes on a raping spree again. His disorder returns, and this time, Pang claims that a being known as “Jack the Ripper” has returned to haunt him, forcing him to punish women by rape. The newly established Forensic Psychiatry Department, however, believes that Pang is faking his sickness.

The featured rape scene in the episode was neither long nor vivid, but nonetheless technically explicit and convincing. Netizens noted that bloody Tina Shek showed even more skin than Sire Ma (馬賽), who was raped in 2011’s Relic of an Emissary <洪武三十二>. Tina’s undergarments, as well as her blood, were also expressively shown in the scene. Netizens believed Tina’s brief rape scene to be the most accurately portrayed murder-rape scene in the recent TVB drama history.

Some avid Hong Kong moviegoers noticed that Dickson also starred as a rapist in the award-winning 1994 film, The Rapist <香港奇案之屯門色魔>, a Category III thriller film based on a serial murder case that occurred in Tuen Mun between 1992 and 1993. Dickson portrayed the film’s titular character, “Tuen Mun Rapist” Lam Kwok Wai. Interestingly, Power Chan (陳國邦), who stars as a psychiatrist in A Great Way to Care 2, also stars in The Rapist as a cop.

  1. haha that blood trail looks a bit exaggerated. I don’t think a virgin bleeds that much when she loses her V-card!

    1. i think the blood also portrayed the brutal force and not that she’s a virgin. Most girls lose their virginity by 14 now and chick looks at least 17.

      1. Hnggg….must….resist…making dirty…and disturbing…joke….

    2. The fact that you said that shows how this series failed in getting the message across.

People, you want gruesome, watch Criminal Minds. I have no doubt this series will oversimplify everything.

      1. Criminal Minds is one of my favourite series. But the sort of evil people do or are capable of doing really brings chills down your spine. One particular episode made me think about whether serial killers are born or made.

  2. that’s so disturbing

Everything’s in so much detail:the blood, teh knickers…

yuk: I wouldn’t want to watch this while having my dinner… haha lol

  3. Quite enjoy watching Tina Shek, she has sweet young look.

  4. I don’t think this is gruesome at all, I’m glad the netizens didn’t complain much about it, this is the reality though not exactly but compared to TVB standards this is it.

Criminal Minds isn’t exactly gruesome, they don’t really show the scenes but they explicitly talk about it in details which makes it a bit disturbing. Either way if TVB didn’t show enough then there would be complaints and now ppl are complaining again cause it’s too much.

BTW the actress is 20 yrs old.

  5. Felt very sorry for Tina`s character. So gruesome and so many blood… Well done tvb

  6. I still don’t understand why they feel the need to show it. They could have easily cut the scene out and referred to the facts through an interrogation or report or something. It would have gotten the point across just as easily without the graphic scene.
No need to keep showing this crap unless they are desperate for ratings. When will they stop pandering to the pervs and going for cheap publicity?
I am still convinced they have some closet rapists writing their crime series recently. They are so obsessed with rape.

  7. I think TVB should incorporate into their training class how to rape or be raped properly.

Recently, TVB has been obsessed with old guys, rapes, and bust-lines. Talking about going down the toilet fast.

    1. I agree w/the OLD guys LOL…haha
It’s kind of pathetic how they have to dig up all those over 50 years old back for the leads. They also seem to enjoy showing rape scenes in almost all the series, HKers complaints about everything I wonder why they are OK w/that. Crappy stuff is definitely increasing in TVB.

  8. When can tvb stop doing these rape scenes. It’s just so annoying. It looks like all they film are category III series right now. Very disgusting. No more creativities

  9. OMG Tavia’s nose really looks like Pinocchio nose. Eeeewwwwwwwww

  10. Loving Tavia’s character so far!

and great chemistry among Ram, Alex and Edwin!
Looking forward to the cases 🙂

  11. Why have a brutal rape scene in a hospital drama? It really is bad taste, just catering to the perverts and sickos.

  12. People need to stop being so sensitive. If American shows can do it, why can’t TVB? The media has to stop reporting about this. It’s so not a recent thing. Rewatch some old TVB series people.

  13. Tavia should not wore those ugly mushroom wig. It make her face feature look too sharp. However her performance as undercover as bar girl so far very good . Her way of speech ,eyes contact and body language bring live to her character.

I have a difficult time to hear what Edwin speak and I get annoyed with his buck teeth. However Edwin performance was good and love his humorous way of communicate with Alex.

  14. I don’t know about you guys, but Im not really liking how they practically killed 3/4 of the first series’s cast off. Doesn’t feel the same, yet the recycling factor comes into place. I had high expectations for this one, since the first series was really good and pretty original imo. So far, this series isn’t bad, but it isn’t good, at least for now.

  15. What’s up with TVB bringing on rape scenes is recent dramas? Are they out of ideas, i could count a handful of rape scenes in recent dramas i saw in the past few months. Such a shame
