Etta Ng Runs Away from Home

Just when Elaine Ng (吳綺莉) thought her relationship with daughter Etta Ng (吳卓林) was making progress, things took a turn for the worse when Etta recently ran away from home.

In June, Etta was hospitalized for two months due to her suicidal tendencies. Etta was spotted with 20 cuts on her wrist. Elaine admitted that a social worker was helping Etta cope with problems. Seeing Etta’s dislike for attending school, Elaine arranged Etta to be home-schooled instead. Unfortunately, with no intentions of learning, Etta ultimately ran away from home.

Co-habiting with Lesbian Friend

After running away from home, Etta has been living together with her lesbian friend in the Wan Chai area. They invited several friends to join them on the rooftop of their building, smoking and drinking beer. On another occasion, Etta and her friend were spotted swimming at their community pool, and seem to settled into their new lifestyle.

When the media called up Elaine, she sighed, “Etta hasn’t been home for a while now, but I keep in touch with her. She’ll be 18 years old this November – she’s a big girl and I shouldn’t be too controlling of her.”

In response to Etta dodging her school studies, Elaine replied, “Learning doesn’t necessarily mean going to school. She told me that she is teaching Mandarin to little kids, which I think is a different type of learning experience. It’s good that she’s actively working – it’s better than being cooped up at home.”

Although Etta is tutoring young children, Elaine said she still provides her daughter with an allowance. While Elaine accepts the fact that Etta has moved out, Elaine said, “Etta can come back whenever she wants – Mommy will always welcome you. We keep in touch and we live under the same sky – our hearts are connected. Let’s say that she went to tackle new experiences for now.”

  1. Sound like Elaine is in peace with herself on Etta. Their separation could be a good thing for the both of them. One can’t force one to want to learn in school.. hopefully Etta will learn to grow up now.

    1. @happybi yep, I think separation would probably help them both grow with more space. but not sure about the schooling thing, though I suppose she could always pick it up again in the future.

      1. @coralie not a fan of the schooling thing either. But HK education is expensive. Best that she doesn’t go then wasting mom money to have her skip classes. Also give another kid a spot in the school.

  2. Am I the only one who is absolutely fed up with this ongoing reality drama?

The best thing for both is to move back to Shanghai and away from the cesspool that is the HK tabloid circle.

  3. I too am fed up with the drama. I must say this though. When Elaine Ng got involved with Jackie Chan, she knew that disgusting man was a married man. She still let him jumped her bones, and even became pregnant by him. Maybe this is her karma for getting into bed knowingly with a married man and becoming pregnant by him. I wonder if she became pregnant on purpose to see if he would leave Joan and come to her. He more than likely fed her the story that he feeds all the women……..that he and Joan are married in name only. None the less, he is married and sharing a home with his wife. I know accidents can happen, but, a woman can control whether she wants to become pregnant or not. It amazes me that Elaine did not become pregnant by her other suitors but all of a sudden she was pregnant with Jackie Chan’s child. Why, because he is Jackie Chan?. The irony of it is, Jackie would not even acknowledge the child. This is a really messed up situation.

@happybi, yes, agree with you and @coralie that separation is important for both of them right now. It is so sad that this young woman has a father who publicly disowned her, to have to be fighting constantly with her mother. Because Jackie Chan refuses to be part of Etta’s life, this is the time that her and Elaine should be bonding, not fighting. I firmly believe that Jackie’s refusal to acknowledge Etta has a lot to do with her erratic behaviour.

  4. Boy this mother and daughter always have problems. Even if they move away I’m sure the reporters still can follow them around.

  5. Sigh, while I feel sorry for mom (regardless of her stupid choice in sleeping with Jackie) – she chose the hard road to raise this child alone, and be single mom of a child whose dad is famous, and always in the limelight.

    1) Etta maybe angrily reacting to all her parents’ baggage and the burden of being the illegitimate unrecognized rejected child of the useless specimen of a man. Sure. But a stronger child – rising above it is a way better method to demonstrate she can exist WITHOUT the dude in her life. Afterall, Jackie ain’t that great a dad to her elder brother too – better off WITHOUT having the dad, then this dad imo.

I recall from the last suicide attempts … people saying this kid is calling out for help. Sure life sucks … and the NAmerican way tends to be ‘Woe is ME’. Life sucks wayyyyy more for more kids/families in Asia, and they emerge kicking and thriving … (some with disability) …but instead deal with it matter of factly and stoicly going about life as usual. People who don’t scream immediatey for welfare, all entitled freebies and counselling either and choose to spend their days wallowing in PJs. I work with marginalized folks here, and it’s night and day when I head back to Asia and observe how they cope valiantly with more setbacks … and often emerge stronger/healthier psychologically as a result … rather than spiral and sink deeper into a lifetime of endless depression/meds.

I stand corrected, but to me a person with more backbone also has to WANT to help themselves to effectively receive help first … that would be their coping mechanism response. Take something negative as a learning process, to make yourself emerge stronger.

Dear Etta, live your OWN life better – immaturely acting out, or dropping out of school … isn’t helping self nor proving anything. It does NOT make you look cool or tough either.

    2) This may be ‘supportive’ … but that ‘kid’ is already 18. If she chooses to live out – perhaps … cut the allowance? That’s Etta having her cake, and eating it too. Enabling …and in a way Elaine is afraid to cut off all ties to her daughter.
