Music Producer Tang Chi Wai Leaves TVB

TVB music producer and composer Tang Chi Wai (鄧智偉), who has been writing music for TVB since 2004’s The Last Breakthrough <天涯俠醫>, announced his resignation from the station yesterday.

He wrote on Weibo, “To seek for my ideal music, and to make more music that I love, today I have officially left the place where I’ve worked for in the last twelve years. I want to thank the company for their guidance and support. I want to thank all the producers, artists and fellow staff who have collaborated with me. From “Heart’s Breath” <心呼吸> [The Last Breakthrough theme] to “Sequel” <續集> [The Hippocratic Crush 2 theme], I have managed to bring with me many wonderful memories of the last twelve years. I hope that you can also remember these memories, and I hope to still be able to hear that, yes, I do listen to Uncle Chi Wai’s music.”

Tang Chi Wai’s sudden announcement came shortly after TVB announced its acquisition of Herman Ho’s (何哲圖) Stars Shine International, which formed a new record label with TVB, Stars Dream Entertainment. Herman Ho is the husband of TVB executive, Sandy Yu (余詠珊), and had close ties with TVB even before the record labels merged. As Stars Dream Entertainment would be making music for future TVB soundtracks and artists, it was rumored that Tang Chi Wai feared he would lose his job.

In a later interview, Tang Chi Wai clarified, “I’ve thought about it for over half a year. TVB wanted me to stay, but I finally decided that it was time for me to leave. Now that there’s a much more suitable candidate [to make music], I can finally leave my worries behind. I want to explore the outside world, but I am thankful for the support that Miss Lok has given me over the years.”

Tang Chi Wai also said that he wishes to stay as a freelancer and is currently not signed to any company. “Even though I left TVB, there are still many other ways to collaborate again.”

Tang Chi Wai’s four assistants also turned in resignation letters to TVB.

Raymond Lam on Tang Chi Wai’s Leave

Tang Chi Wai’s good friend and frequent collaborator, Raymond Lam (林峯), stated that he would still continue to work with Tang Chi Wai, believing that music has no boundaries and a collaboration will always be possible regardless of company affiliation.

  1. it is quite a shame that he is leaving tvb, he is very talented and produced so many good songs for tvb series….not sure who he considers as a suitable candidate….but i still think his songs are the best.

  2. Another talented individual that TVB has lost…sigh…
I really enjoyed his works, especially the ones he produced for Raymond. Wishing him all the best and hope to continue to hear more of his songs in the future.

  3. What a shame. Tang Chi Wai is a true musical talent and I’ve always looked forward to his new songs in new dramas. Would miss him quite a bit now but at least we’ve got 續集 to look forward to.

  4. TVB pay the damn guy up, he did many great theme songs, TVB fails again!

  5. Another talented person that TVB has lost. At least he can still work with them, Raymond and many other artists. Hope he continues to produce more great works for everyone to enjoy! Good luck to him wherever he decides to go.

  6. I never knew he looked that way. Quite cool looking. There may be conspiracy theories but there may be also a legitimate reason for him to leave with his assistants.

  7. It’s sad to see him leave, but it’s probably also the best choice for him. Writing themesongs is more restrictive since the lyrics and music have to fit the series. It seems like he wants to have more freedom to create whatever music he wants, and he should do so while he is still young.

  8. If he really opens a music company, I hope the whole band will join, especially Ben :). The trio CW-Ben-LF!

    1. I’m sorry, but I don’t like Ben at all. I feel ashamed that he came from Canada, where I was born. His music is horrible. Too American and computerized.

      1. You don’t like, I like, and? Ashamed of Ben because his music is computerized? Ridiculous and nonsense.

  9. Tang Chi Wai’s four assistants also turned in resignation letters to TVB.

    >> Wow

  10. i was a bit sad and worry about him and his assistants…where else he can go! Hope to hear his production again! best wishes!

    1. No worries. Whenever someone leaves with all his assistants it means he has a different route to follow. He has alternatives no doubt.

      1. Indeed. It sounds like TCW has some work in progress. We’ll find out soon enough.

  11. So he’s the one behind many great themesongs. I enjoyed his collaboration with LF. Let’s see how the new company will do for TVB.

  12. TVB dramas will never be the same again without this great composer behind all the phenomenal theme songs. How saddening.

  13. It is a pity he’s leaving but he said he’ll still contine collaborating with the company, is good he’s exploring other opportunities. The company also had many great theme songs composed before CW came along, I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem.

  14. Good luck to Tang Chi Wai in his future endeavours. He has composed some great themesongs.

Wish his new exploration will give him more inspiration for his music.

    1. hope that he will not forget the promise he made to Fred Cheng in the Voice-of-stars that he will write a song for him. Anyway all the best to you, Tang Chi Wai!

  15. He’s an amazing songwriter/producer, his classics like the MoonlightRes.’ theme song, and the OnCall36 theme song. These songs will be a song that no hk drama fanatic will ever forget!

    Good luck!

  16. I couldn’t believe He was the one who composed 心呼吸. That was the first song I heard from Ray and found out he was a real good singer. That song was such a good one and it was Chi Wai’s first song too?

I thought most or 50% of the people here would bash Chi Wai, saying he sucks or good he’s leaving, but looks like I’m wrong. I’m not saying his songs sound horrible, but just not as good as the more experienced musicians in the actual HK music industry. He hasn’t really composed music for the real good top singers.

I think it’s much better for Chi Wai to leave TVB cause I think he’ll make much more money and have much more freedom outside. How much money can he make, composing 1 or 2 songs for each drama released in a year! Plus TVB are cheapos.

  17. amazing guy.. loved the songs he writes.. shame to see him resign,
best wishes to him. Im sure he will continue to produce more amazing hit songs for us to listen to ! x
