“Three Lives, Three Worlds” Starring Crystal Liu and Yang Yang Begins Production

Chinese fantasy romance film Three Lives, Three Worlds: Ten Miles of Peach Blossom <三生三世十里桃花> has started production. The movie, which is an adaptation of the popular online novel of the same name by Tang Qi Gong Zi (唐七公子), stars Crystal Liu Yifei (刘亦菲) and Yang Yang (杨洋) as two star-crossed lovers who go through three lifetimes of love and hate. Crystal’s casting was confirmed in June of this year. Yang Yang’s addition was not confirmed until October.

The hype is real for Three Lives, Three Worlds, which is one of China’s most influential romantic internet novels. After Crystal’s casting as the female lead was announced, fans were on the edges of their seats for over three months, waiting to hear the next announcement about the film’s male lead, Prince Ye Hua. When Yang Yang’s casting was confirmed in October, the casting news received over one million reblogs on Weibo.

Three Lives, Three Worlds would be the young actor’s fifth novel-to-motion picture adaptation since his debut as Jia Baoyu with The Dream of Red Mansions <红楼梦> in 2010. Yang Yang’s lead performance in the action adventure series The Lost Tomb <盗墓笔记> broke him into a lead star.

Last week, Yang Yang shared a picture of himself getting a cast for his face, to prepare for his role as Prince Ye Hua. With the clay on his face, Yang Yang could not move for several hours.

“This isn’t me! It really isn’t me!” said Yang Yang on Weibo. Fans expressed their support for the 24-year-old actor, adding that they are both excited and heartbroken to see Yang Yang working so hard for the film.

Three Live, Three Worlds is co-produced by Alibaba Pictures and Ruyi Films. It is co-directed by Zhao Xiaoding (赵小丁) and Anthony LaMolinara, who won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work in 2004’s Spider-Man 2.

When did Chinese fans become like Korean fans? Where every actual fall, like splat! fall, is a magnificent attempt at literally standing up again in such a heroic manner of standing up, where being paid for a job like walking left to right makes fans heartbroken to see the said actor working “so hard” for the film?
