Yang Mi Delighted by Hawick Lau’s Gift of Joint-Ownership

Since declaring their dating relationship in January, Hawick Lau (劉愷威) and Yang Mi’s (楊冪) love continued to intensify. Hawick saw Yang Mi as his significant other and even lavished her with a new luxury apartment in Hong Kong recently. Hawick added Yang Mi’s name to the property ownership, delighting her with his sincerity!

TVB actor, Lau Dan’s (劉丹) son, Hawick Lau, has risen to become one of mainland China’s top actors. With his newfound financial success, Hawick purchased a new home with his girlfriend in mind. Hawick said, “Yang Mi will have many opportunities to travel to Hong Kong for filming. I hope to give her a more comfortable environment to stay. She does not need to always stay in a hotel.”

Yang Mi was moved by Hawick’s gesture make her a joint-owner of the new house, which came as an unexpected surprise. Appearing at a luxury brand watch promotional event the day before, Yang Mi said, “I did not know of [Hawick’s intention] earlier, so I was very surprised and moved.”

Yang Mi and Hawick Lau fell in love after filming mainland drama, Ruyi <如意>, last year together. The pair has become a “power couple” in China and was popular among advertisers, often appearing in promotinal events together. After starring in movie, Holding Love <Hold住愛>, the lovers will next appear in mainland drama, Midsummer Clear Day <盛夏晚晴天>.

Midsummer Clear Day marks Hawick’s first attempt as a television producer. Yang Mi expressed confidence that Hawick will do a good job in overseeing the drama’s production. Yang Mi said, “I am very assured. He has good planning skills and is very competent.” Yang Mi laughed and said that she agreed to film for her boyfriend at a discounted price.

Yang Mi’s good friend, mainland actress, Tiffany Tang (唐嫣), has been romantically linked to Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) due to their collaboration in The Woman Above the Bread Tree <麵包樹上的女人>. After Tiffany dismissed her rumors with Bosco in her Weibo blog, Yang Mi also expressed confidence that Tiffany was not the “third party” in the Boscolie breakup.

Yang Mi said, “I chat with Tiffany Tang on a daily basis. I am very clear about her romantic status; I am certain that she is not involved with Bosco Wong.”

Jayne: Hawick Lau has made it in mainland China! It appears that more artists are now becoming television producers in mainland dramas. Artist branding in China seems very important; it appears that with the right branding is highly valued in a crowded and segmented television market to make the drama stand out. It was smart choice for Hawick to invite Yang Mi to appear in his first TV production to guarantee higher audience interest.

Also, mainland China seems ready to create its own generation of young powerhouse idols, in which modern love dramas (or idol dramas) seem to borrow their cue from Korean dramas, to appeal to the young audience.

What do you think of the trend of modern love dramas such as “Beijing Love Story,” “The Woman Above the Bread Tree” and now Hawick’s “Midsummer Clear Day”? Do you welcome this developing trend of mainland idol dramas or you think they still have a long way to go?

  1. As I stated before, I find it very romantic for a man to give a woman a set of house keys. His vision to share a home and “love nest” for the two of them alone, a hideaway from the rest of the world.

It could be a cabin in the woods or even a trailer home, but it is the promise and vision of wanting to carve a home (and future) together.

    1. i agree. being given joint ownership of a property (not the Lis and Lees types where they own many) is a strong statement to the relationship. romantic indeed. 😉

    2. agree wth u jayne… nothing says love n commitment more thn set of keys.. its like welcme i want shre my life wth u

    3. Giving joint ownership is a little bit more than just giving a set of your keys tbh. However, I suppose rich people do things a little different, lol

I’m quite happy with an increase in modern love dramas since I think Mainland is behind in this genre.

  2. Yang Mi has a very “Audrey Hepburn” look about her…

    1. Please do not insult Audrey Hepburn that way. I really can’t tell the difference b/w this Yang Mi person and all the other young chinese “actresses” from China nowadays.. They all look the same.. Same plasticky chinese barbie doll look. Guess they all go to the same plastic surgeon who only has one face mold.

      1. I’m a huge Audrey Hepburn fan, so wouldn’t do anything to insult her memory. But the fact remains when I searched on Yang Mi it is obvious she is trying to play up her similarities to Audrey in a large way.

      2. yang mi may have had plastic surgery but she doesn’t look anything like the average china barbie. she doesn’t have the stock narrow, straight nose or super pointy chin.

    2. Yang Mi’s hairdo looks like Audrey Hepburn, and that’s all the similarities I can see. Yang Mi looks like pre-plastic surgery of Viann (only the face/cheekbones).

    3. I’m a huge fan of Hepburn too and seen every single one of her movies. This Yang Mi person can “try” to look like Hepburn, but she looks nothing like her. Hepburn has the kind of grace and elegance that’s unmatched by others and no “pretender” can replicate that. And she does look like Ron Ng’s ex.. These “actresses” from china are really playing up to the stereotype, “all chinese look alike”, :P.

  3. “What do you think of the trend of modern love dramas such as “Beijing Love Story,” “The Woman Above the Bread Tree” and now Hawick’s “Midsummer Clear Day”?”

Haven’t seen any of them but yes China wants to create their own idol drama series with hopefully better acting. But I have problems with their modern day series, it feels so… can’t remember the word that is always used when describing hospital. I find them rather bland.

“Do you welcome this developing trend of mainland idol dramas or you think they still have a long way to go?”

Long way to go but they have pretty girls (whether surgery or no surgery) and better looking guys (mostly imported). Since China has basically shoot themselves in declaring many story content as banned, the only way to go and in safe route is romantic modern day dramas. Again I am not a fan of their modern day dramas.

    1. Notice lately there are quite a bit of chinese idol drama type, but for somereason compare with k drama or taiwan idol drama , it lack of something

      1. China is more known for their wuxia and ancient series, not the modern ones. I saw some modern ones and some are not so bad but not sure if you can call them idol dramas. I saw Bitter Coffee with Hu Ge, Bai Bing and Han Dong and that was ok. However, it was more of a drama rather then an idol series. Taiwanese series are more known for their idol series and many of them are pretty good.

    2. Funn,
I watched several episodes of “Beijing Love Story,” which is one of the more popular modern love dramas released in mainland China. Unlike Korean dramas, it seems to lack romance in a love-centered drama. BLS lacks gloss, lacks the saccharine feeling, lacks escapism. The sets are nice enough, but the way people interact with each other (even romantic couples) seem to lack a certain level of intimacy with each other. It is as if they are too prim and proper, lacking that intense passion.

It becomes more a commentary on modern love than a true love drama as established by Korean standards. I have no problems with the level headed maturity in which BLS came across as, but it is not the typical escapism that one would look for in a love drama. There are more problems than there is a romantic feeling (even in the early episodes). And the characters do have long dialogue exchanges.

Watching the trailer of “The Woman Above the Bread Tree,” this seems to be the case too. It explores modern mainland Chinese women’s choices in love, often choosing practicality. But again, it resembles a social commentary rather than the sort of fluffy romantic escapism that sweeps you off your feet. In short, it has substance, but it lacks the emotions and love feelings.

  4. I wonder if they will adapt 盛夏晚晴天 100% or will have some changes. 盛夏晚晴天 is kinda stupid and 100% idol type (its authour is young, too) and I don’t know why Hawick and Yang Mi want to use it to declare for their love? If they change, I hope the changes will make the series better than the novel.

  5. Hawick was always just a 2nd or 3rd tier character in TVB.. good for him that he has now found stardom in China!

  6. Great to know that their relationship is going well. I hope that it will be stable and advance to marriage…Great that Hawick has found both love and career in mainland. Congrats to him!

  7. If it’s anything like Gong – whether it be ancient/modern – I say step away from it…

As for mainland dramas, I’ve yet to see a modern series that appeals to me. The key thing that draws me to their ancient dramas is the budget and lush scenery – it’s pure escapism. Then then you jump to modern dramas and *something* just feels amiss; the storylines always sound less than exciting, it certainly does not exude this trendy feel, and the production sets/locations aren’t the most appealing (to me anyway).

    1. And that is an awkward looking grin from YM in the above picture. I rarely do – and hate to – pick on people’s looks, but her mouth bothers me somewhat. I read somewhere that she pulled out her molars to create a slimmer face, apparently “for one of her roles,” right? Whenever her mouth is closed, I can’t help but be reminded of a grandma. Sorry…

Hawick’s never appealed to me, but he sure looks better with age. Still looks pretty fresh and young too.

    2. I remember I only watched Gong for Tong Liya, and skipped everybody else’s part.

  8. China is steeped in history and legends and they have fantastic scenery and props to make their stories authentic. Hong Kong is different as it has always been modern and with the times and its people are more sophisticated than their counterparts in the mainland. Yes, the latter have still a long way to go developing their “mainland idol dramas”.

  9. Congratz to Hawick n YangMi! Look like they’re doing well in their relationship. Hope his 1st tv drama will break some record hehe.

I would love to see those young modern love story but don’t want to watch it in mandarin lol.

  10. let’s hope they don’t split up. dividing the property could be messy.

  11. This guy is smart to secure his relationship with young and pretty yang mi with the joint name ownership lol. He’s quite smart to buy her heart thru this way ..lol.

    1. Yes considering she makes more $$$, possible he will get a bigger return in his investment, if they were to ever break up.

      1. my thought of Hawick is different though lol..I think he’s truly inlove with her because she’s young, pretty and “nice” and he also wanted to settle down with that kind of age now. Hawick probably felt by joining her name in a property ownership would probably moved her and win her heart since he didnt do that to Bernice and lose her to Moses in the end.. so I guess he wanted her so bad in a way that he’s willing to spend alot of $$$$$.. I still dont see any good future in these 2..

      2. Nobody knows what the future will hold so who knows if they will have a good future or not?? Just look at Bosco and Myolie, everyone thought that they were in a stable relationship and was going to get married, but now look at them?? Things can happen out of the blue when we least expect it…

      3. As for Boscolie’s relationship, I think they’re “doom” as in their relationship. There is no way Myolie will accept Bosco anymore since the media and Myolie herself have announced it to the world and Myo seems like moving out soon from Bosco’s apartment just to cut off those ties asap.

      4. I think their relationship is gone too but if it does end, then it just does… Life is short so they all need to move on instead of dwell over the unhappy past…

      5. Yup, life is too short to dwell in an unhappy relationship. If one has decided to call it quit..then I think she/he has finally had enough of the relationship and wanted out quick. Dwelling in a sad and unhappy situation won’t help either people and it will just waste more time.

      6. Yea and even marriages end all of the time, but everyone is making the biggest deal out of Bosco and Myolie’s relationship ending… It was unexpected at first, but now that i think about it, not really because I have seen marriages that I thought were really happy. But then one day, BOOM, it ends out of the blue…

      7. 8 years is a long time, nearly a decade. How many decades do a girl have to truly understand a person and lived through many experiences of life with him?

Moylie should be 33, she has 1-2 further chances to try her luck in a relationship before she loses out to those fresher and prettier girls in the love market.

Of course she could try botox and go for those younger guys but the feeling is not quite the same…

        No offense to Moylie…

  12. It is a very sweet gesture. Not many guys willing to do that these days. I married my husband because he offered that to me. It showed how sincere he is.

But even with that, a marriage is quite hard. Need to compromise all the time and put one’s marriage first in order for the marriage to last.

  13. Hawick is sweet to joint ownership a home with Yangmi! I wish my future husband will do this too. Really showing sincerity!
