Jade Kwan “Enraged” After Losing at the RTHK Top Ten Awards

Pop singer, Jade Kwan (關心妍), was surprisingly left empty handed at the 35th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards, or the RTHK Top Ten, on Sunday night.

The 33-year-old Canadian singer was one of the most prolific singers of 2012, releasing two full-length albums in 10 months, both which were certified gold. Jade also held two successful solo concerts – one in the Hong Kong Coliseum on January 20, 2012, and another smaller-scale concert in the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center on September 21, 2012.

Her best-selling single, “The Philosophy of Lovelorn,” also received numerous nominations and awards at the 2012 Metro Radio Awards and the JSG Awards.

Nominated in four categories at the RTHK Top Ten awards, Oriental Daily reported that Jade attended the ceremony believing that she would win at least one of them. Moments before the RTHK Top Ten awards commenced, Jade’s manager uploaded a picture of Jade posing in her orange-red gown, with the status, “Jade is ready. RTHK Top Ten, here we come!”

The singer, however, was left empty handed. Her single could not even make it into the list of top ten Chinese gold songs, which was expanded to “top twelve” songs this year.

Moments before the award ceremony officially ended, Jade uploaded a status on her Weibo blog. Enraged for her loss, she wrote “Despite all my efforts, it was still disappointment in the end. To all my fans who supported ‘The Philosophy of Lovelorn’ – I am sorry, and thank you! I can no longer stay persistent; I just want to peacefully live my life as Mrs. Yeung from now on! And Happy Birthday, father-in-law!”

Jade Boycotts the Awards

In a phone interview with Oriental Daily on Monday, Jade admitted that she was disappointed with Sunday night’s results. She firmly expressed that she would not be attending any more music award ceremonies starting in 2014.

Jade assured that she will not be retiring from the music industry. Although she has yet to discuss her boycotting plans with her management and record label Star Entertainment, she believes that her agency will fully support her decision. “Yes, I am furious!” Jade finally said.

Jade is the third Hong Kong singer, after Alan Tam (譚詠麟) and Leon Lai (黎明), to make the decision to not receive any music awards in the industry.

The singer stressed that her decision to retire from music awards was not made on a whim. Jade, who was nominated for the Outstanding Pop Singer Award at the RTHK Top Ten, said, “That last time I won this award was in 2003. I had a lot of hope to win it again this year, but I was disappointed in the end. I really do not know how this game is played. I know a lot of my fans are also feeling very disappointed. Sunday was my father-in-law’s birthday. I could have skipped the awards for his birthday party, but I chose to attend, to support the music industry. I didn’t even win half of an award. This is unfair!

“I’ve been in the industry for 11 years. There aren’t many 11 years in a singer’s lifetime, and because of my singing career, I opted to not have children yet. I cannot wait anymore!”

RTHK Received No Complaints

Upon hearing Jade’s “boycott” movement, RTHK Top Ten  producer, James Fung (馮偉棠), laughed out loud three times. Hinting at Jade’s lack of talent, he said, “I can’t help it. A singer’s efforts and performances do not always equate. I feel helpless, but I do hope that she will let go of past grudges and return next year afresh and new. Our door will always be opened for her.”

RTHK also did not receive any complaints from Jade’s fans.

  1. I kind of expecte Jade not to win anything. Yes she worked hard, but her results in the RTHK chart was below standard. Her hit single fell out at number 3. Even Janice did not get an award and she had way better sucess then jade in the RTHK chart this year. Also, Jade only released one full album which two of the songs were a duplicate of her previous EP. She release one EP and one album. Yes it reach gold, but so did a lot of other singer;s album. She not popular enough to boycott awards yet.

    1. jade is overrated and not popular. I only remember her to mispick kwan kok ying jsg award in 2008.it is a joke for many months.

      1. Lol, that’s funny! She must have really wanted to win something.

      2. I so remember that. It was hilarious. But I also felt bad for Jade too.

  2. Jade Kwan…meh. She’s been rather irrelevant for a while and her songs are mediocre at best now.

  3. Also if she were to plug momre songs then it might be better. She used tha thit single the entire year. It;s a good idea i guess, but this song was a cover song so it already lowers the quality. Also, its her fans that keep posting stuff online saying that she will win big awards. It started since the beginning of the year. First, her fans keep saying she will win most popular female in JSG then Gold song gold then best female singer in RTHK. Im getting sick of them. They are overhyping Jade’s popularity this year. Comparing to other fmeale singers, Fiona, Kary, G.E.M. , and even Janice has better performance then her.

  4. I always feel that Jade and Janice are in the same boat. Both of them have extreme talent in singing, but never wins much awards. However, if Janice could not get a big award then Jade can;t either. Altho Janice was not as active she still release an album and hold a concert at Star Hall this yer. Janice got two number one songs at RTHK chart this year. If Janice can;t even win at RTHK, then Jade can cause her songs barley charted on RTHK. This is just what I think. Partly of Jades failure torwards the end is the overhyping from fans in which Jade believes them that she will win big awards this year.

  5. What has become of the HK music industry? I really miss the old days. However, I don’t think Jade should think that she deserves to win just because she worked hard. There are many that work really hard and yet end up with nothing.

    1. yeh i also miss the old days,im always exited to watch the ’80 and 90 awards events which was full of big stars and good music, today’s award events is nothing more than promotions of their own favourites,i saw the jsg top 10 last,it looses all his gloss and attraction.

    2. exactly my thoughts, alot of ppl work hard in showbiz n some are still 2-3-4 th supporting characters, where’s the justice there? she thinks by lasing out verbally is going help her win? i think thats a rather childish thought. however, i do think Joey Yung and Eason Chan are so overrated as well, i mean its like nobody else can sing since they get all the awards n others r just dead? hahaa what a joke. w/jade saying i delay in having kids?????? who’s choice is that?? i am sorry but thats kind of funny.

      1. Really agree with you and it feels sad that she thinks that she will get to win just because she complains and all… Life is hard and is very hard in the circle. As we can see by Wayne who worked for 20+ years to get to where he is now. There is also Wilson Tsui who worked for over 30+ years until he finally gets noticed… There are many others that still have a long way to go.. Where is the justice for them??

    3. @HeTieShou,

I know, its crazy for an adult to whine about it like this. even thou i have never particularly known HK artists except sometimes by watching those TVB series and some theme songs catch our ears and then i thought of them so all of them are really all the same to me and when i click on this forum, i see who wins and such then i know their names.
i thought someone would have sense to know that in any business real life labor or showbiz, like life is easy? hell, its hard everywhere and for everyone. If everyone works hard and gets rewarded, THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE. unfortunately, its NOT so we just have to live with it.

      1. @Kiki,
Yea, I really agree with you that IF everyone is rewarded for their hard work, then the world would definately be a better place. There are some that work hard and get nothing while there are others that don’t do anything or do very little but yet get so much in return. I guess it is just fate and everyone has a different fate. We have to accept our fate, try our best and live with it. Some are just luckier than others.

I know a lot of HK artists but was way more interested in the singers back in the 80s and 90s. Many of the new singers of today just cannot sing as well. Part of the reason is many of the “singers” are actors turned singers and just don’t have the talent to sing just like in the past. It is like they are forced to sing or want to sing for more money only. I don’t they really have the talent or the passion to sing but want the monetary rewards and awards. True singers would not care for that stuff and only want to express their passion and love for music like Jacky Cheung for example. He is not only talented, but is so humble and sings also because he wants not for the awards and all since he way above that…

    4. @HeTieShou,

Always agrees w/alot of your points…

There are lots of undergrads or even masters degrees grads that do NOT even have a job in the work force when in fact one of the cleaning lady in my office gets decent salary? Where is the justice in that? You know, it’s so funny that when i hear her say I procrastinated in having babies just so i can get awards? Who in their right mind says? That’s just beyond funny to me.
Exactly, all these actors esp actresses trying to sing is just so damn funny but on this subject it’s not just happening in HK thou, Korea, Japan, Taiwan it’s like most of the asian countries, they have to do all in order to make more n more money. They just dont care how awful they sound. Take Kate Tsui or Linda Chung, all these Ms HK’s can barely act well and now most of them are trying to break into the music industry as well. When you hear them sing theme songs, OK fine but albums?? hahahha OMG…

  6. My mum recorded the 十大勁歌金曲 award show in the year they crowned the “four heavenly kings”. Compared to this tripe where Eason and Joey pretty much win every year, and Linda-frikking-Chung gets a mention in the top 10 songs of 2012, well, to put ti shortly:
    we f***ed, son.

    1. Oh which year was that I want to watch it too? Jacky Cheung’s performance at the awards was outstanding! Makes me want to watch those award shows again that had the four heavenly kings and Faye Wong. I used to be so excited to watch the awards. I haven’t watched them in a while I only watched this one cause Jacky was performing 🙂 and as usual I was not disappointed. Can’t wait for his release of his 2012 concert he’s going to be the first artist to release it in 3D! Can’t wait! Sorry I kind of went off topic back to Jade… ya hard work doesn’t equal success and that’s a part of life she should be more mature about it.

      1. I still have a taping of this. It was in 1992. Every once in a while I would still watch it.

  7. Someone throwing princess attitude?. Just because you work hard and you suppose to get an award?. What a joke. Wait for 11 years not to have kids is her personal decision. Nobody promise anything to her. She should just go back to be xilai then.

  8. Its quite funny to see HK artists getting upset over not getting any awards. This gives everybody the impression that they only make music because of the awards. Such a wrong attitude.

  9. However unfair the judging might have been Jade should have behaved more professionally and fully accepted the decision of the judges instead of feeling so sorry for herself and sulking. That’s really not becoming to an artiste no matter in what field she or he is.Surely not winning any prize is not going to be the end of the world for her?

  10. different ppl have different effort, expectations and value on things. cant say if it is good or bad what she have decided, maybe she will regret it for later, but now only she knows what is important for herself.

  11. People can say they miss the old days and that today’s music industry is crap but you have to realize why that is. The awards are a joke now not because the singers are bad but because all the old singers left. Cantopop is dead because all the people from the 80s and 90s left. Singers from that generation don’t produce new songs, don’t participate in awards, and made the industry what it is today. Just a bunch of young singers.

  12. she’s definitely not winning any fans here… me included!!!

Who does she think she is? Boycott award presentation… what make her think she will get one next year or future years? I’m surprised she even got an award at JSG. Her live performance was disgraceful! So out of tune with the MV. The MV producer/editor should get the award! haha..

  13. I didn’t know she’s already married. Who did she marry?

These singers always got ‘enrage’ and accuse the awards shows to be unfair when they didn’t win an award. But, they have no problem accepting their awards happily when they win one. Not a thought about whether their award is fairly one. And people call them brave when they blast the award show after they don’t get the award. I will call them brave if they dare to say the awards show is unfair when they got an award.
