Anita Mui’s Life and Legacy Captured in New Biopic Film

It has been 18 years since Hong Kong Cantopop Queen Anita Mui (梅艷芳) passed away, but her legacy still lives on in the hearts of her fans. A movie commemorating her story is gearing up for release, and three promotional posters were released earlier.

The three posters are representative of Anita’s most important relationships with her elder sister Ann Mui (梅愛芳), mentor Eddie Lau (劉培基), and good friend Leslie Cheung (張國榮). The poster with Anita’s sister quoted the lyrics from “Intimate Lover” <親密愛人>: “I am not lonely as long as you are with me on my romantic journey.”

In the poster with Anita and Leslie, it quoted the lyrics from their famous movie Rouge <胭脂扣>: “I pray that we are able to meet again, so I can tell you how much I’ve missed you.” The lyrics also represent how much their fans miss them.

Due to her close resemblance to Anita, newcomer Louise Wong (王丹妮) was cast as the music legend. Louis Koo (古天樂) will play Eddie, Fish Liew (廖子妤) will play Ann, and Terrance Lau (劉俊謙) will play Leslie.

Auditioning in March of 2016, Terrance initially did not “realize it was for the role of Leslie” and his performance faltered badly. “It was not until December 2016 that I was called back for a second audition…to act out a scene and sing a song. I decided that I must prepare to the best of my ability, and choreographed some dance moves to go with the song. I also had a secret weapon–I had borrowed a leather jacket from the 80s from my friend’s father. I parted my hair in the middle as well in hopes that the director would recognize my efforts.”

The biopic is produced Bill Kong (江志强) of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon <臥虎藏龍> fame, and directed by Cold War‘s <寒戰> Longman Leung (梁樂民). Gordon Lam (林家棟), Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅), Tony Yang (楊祐寧), and Carlos Chan (陳家樂 ) make special guest appearances in the film.

Anita will release theatrically in Hong Kong on November 12, 2021.

  1. At an angle she does look like Anita. I wonder if she will have to sing as well or if it will be voiceovers.

  2. I better prepare boxes of tissue to watch this… It is really hard for anyone to capture the dynamic and charismatic Anita but I hope we can still see some mirror images of her in Danni Wang…
This film may be a “Poisoned Chalice” for both Newbie Danni Wang and Terrance Lau….If they nail their roles, it will earn them Respect, Fame, Lots of Rewards and Fans… But if they did not…they better not read any comments over the net…
I hope the Production house will mentally prepare them for any outcome.

  3. 王丹妮‘s English name is Louise, not Danni. (Sources: Louise’s instagram and Do Do Cheng called her Louise in an interview)

    1. @redbean OMG! You are so humorous … Danni Wang is the pinyin for 王丹妮’s name (First name, surname). No one said it was her English name. Did you really not noticed?

    2. I think there’s a Chinese American actress named 王丹妮 whose English name is Danni Wang, which has probably led to the confusion. But you’re right, the model-turned-actress playing Anita here is Louise Wong.

  4. Tearing up just watching the trailer… miss Anita and Leslie so much! How can we watch this movie in the US?

  5. I really want to see this … Just the trailer is already making me want to cry. It looks like they’ll be using some actual video and audio of Anita.
