Disney’s “Mulan” Arrives in Theaters on March 27

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan is expected to be released on March 27, 2020. Starring Crystal Liu (刘亦菲), the expectations are high after Disney released its latest trailer.

The action-packed clip shows Crystal’s transformation from a girl next door to a strong warrior. There are many exciting action scenes which display the martial arts skills that Crystal has put a lot of effort into learning. In one shot, she is seen somersaulting mid-air onto a galloping horse. It is a different side of Crystal that the audience has never seen before.

Mulan is directed by Niki Caro and has a star-studded cast including Jet Li (李連杰) as the emperor and Gong Li (鞏俐) as the main antagonist, the Wolf. Donnie Yen (甄子丹) will act as Mulan’s mentor and newcomer Yoson An (安柚鑫) from New Zealand will be the male lead.

Even with the exciting trailer, there are some netizens that are wary of the changes that have been made. For example, there will be no singing in this movie, a departure from the usual Disney movies. As well, Mulan’s trusty sidekicks Mushu and Cricket will be replaced with a Phoenix. Lastly, Mulan’s love interest Commander Shang from the animation will not be a part of the movie. Yoson An’s role will be a hot-blooded new army recruit in the same unit as Mulan.
