Maggie Cheung’s Diva Attitude Led to Exclusion From “War and Beauty 2”

On October 1oth, the sales presentation clip for War and Beauty 2 <金枝慾孽 2> took place at TVB City. Bowie Lam (林保怡) and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) decided not to film the sequel, however, Maggie Cheung (張可頤) surprisingly did not appear in the sales presentation clip either. Although not yet officially confirmed to appear in the sequel, Ada Choi (蔡少芬) appeared in a high profile manner at the studio.

Allegedly, Maggie Cheung had a costume fitting for War and Beauty 2 on October 4th. A Sudden Weekly reporter witnessed Maggie losing her temper while waiting for a makeup artist at TVB City. Leaving the makeup studio, Maggie called a TVB executive via her cell phone and complained, “How come no one is helping me with my make-up?” Even prior to filming War and Beauty 2, Maggie already possessed such a difficult diva attitude, no wonder she was kicked out of the cast!

The reporter observed Maggie sitting inside the makeup area in studio #15. Maggie sat for fifteen minutes and after a brief exchange with a staff member inside the makeup studio, Maggie huffily left to make a phone call. She said in an upset voice, “One makeup artist is helping Sharon Chan (陳敏之) with her makeup, one was helping Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), and another was helping Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣). How come no one is helping me with my makeup? I do not want to complain; I am just saying! I’m okay in going to studio #4!” During the phone conversation, Maggie discovered the reporter’s presence and quickly walked away. She resorted to complaining via text message instead. Apparently, the person she was conversing with was a TVB executive manager.

Allegedly, when Maggie first entered the makeup studio on that day, she unabashedly asked the makeup artists to help her immediately. However, all the makeup artists were occupied and could not immediately attend to her. An insider revealed, “When Maggie entered the makeup studio, she stated the time needed to enter the studio. At the time, all the artists present had to go into the studio [for filming]! Maggie was only there for the costume fitting of War and Beauty 2, while other artists were there for actual filming! When the makeup artists told her no one was available to help her yet, Maggie complained to executive management. She was acting as if she were a top sister!”

Jonathan Chik Tired of Maggie Cheung

Although Producer Jonathan Chik (戚其義) knew that Maggie Cheung did not get along with the rest of the cast on the 2004 set of War and Beauty 2, he was forced to ask Maggie in order to increase the star power. However, Maggie filed numerous complaints prior to actual filming, which led to Jonathan ultimately changed his mind. An insider noted, “Everyone knows that there are not many first line artists left at TVB. Jonathan wanted to feature the original cast of War and Beauty. Since Gigi Lai (黎姿) and Charmaine Sheh did not wish to participate in the sequel, only Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) and Maggie Cheung were left. In the past, Maggie acted as a diva and offended her costars.

“Jonathan knew that Maggie was difficult to get along with, but hoped that she had changed over the years and asked her to join the cast. At the costume fitting, this incident already flared and Maggie complained to executive management. Jonathan was tired of her and asked someone else to step in instead.” Allegedly, Sheren Tang had already confirmed to film and Jonathan was trying to persuade Ada Choi to join the cast of War and Beauty 2. Regarding Maggie Cheung’s screen time being canceled, the reporter attempted to contact Jonathan Chik without success.

Continuing to Act Like a Diva

After filming movie, Everlasting Regret <長恨歌>, in 2006, Maggie Cheung suffered from thyroiditis and took a hiatus from her acting career. In 2008, Maggie returned to TVB and took on simple hosting jobs, such as Living Up <更上一層樓>, Harbingers of Doom <大凶兆>, and Mr. Hong Kong <香港先生選舉>. In 2009, Maggie started filming series again and last year, she filmed Forensic Heroes 3 <法證先鋒III > when Charmaine Sheh was unable to film.

Portraying the role of Dr. Chung in Forensic Heroes 3, Maggie was criticized by netizens as looking old and haggard, while lacking professionalism. When netizens asked why the cast of Forensic Heroes 3 each possessed a tablet PC, Maggie immediately retorted back, “Using a tablet PC for work, why was there such a big response? After thinking for a long time, I am still perplexed. How is the tablet PC different than hand held devices? This is now the world’s most common thing; is everyone still stuck in the Stone Age?”

Since Maggie’s performance was criticized by netizens over and over again, it was unlikely that she will become this year’s TV Queen. An insider revealed, “Although Forensic Heroes 3 is an Anniversary series, there is a slim chance for Maggie Cheung to becomeTV Queen! At the numerous internal meetings that have occurred thus far, no executive manager mentioned her name. She offended numerous people and is difficult to get along with. Many producers are tired of her!”

Returning to TVB for only three years, Maggie received a limited income from filming series. However, she gained a good profit from property transactions and her net worth was estimated to be over $100 million HKD. In addition, Maggie had a boyfriend who worked in the financial industry. No wonder she acted as if she did not care about money.

Excerpt from Sudden Weekly #846.

Jayne: Although Sudden Weekly may have exaggerated upon the makeup studio incident, if Maggie did appear at the costume fitting of War and Beauty 2, wonder why Jonathan Chik decided to cancel her participation? The sequel would be more well received if more members of the original cast can participate. Perhaps Maggie Cheung is still regarded as “difficult” to work with?

  1. Most of the comments about FH III that I read were compliments how well and professionally Maggie Cheung acts as Dr. Chung.

  2. Maybe because she will be in “2012′s heavyweight drama, Big Eunuch “???

    1. a eunuch can’t have a big ****. He can, but it would be unfortunate as it would be cut off.

  3. “Since Maggie’s performance was criticized by netizens over and over again, it was unlikely that she will become this year’s TV Queen. “

There were a lot of criticism on Maggie on the first episode, but, mostly on her character not her acting. Furthermore, from episode 2 onward, I see viewers started warming up to her and most of the comments I read are compliments.

This reporter give an uneven and bias report of Maggie’s reception.

  4. What’s so diva about that? She said she was willing to go to another studio.
And does Wayne really need that much make-up done?

I only fault her for wearing that matching polka dot outfit.

  5. I saw some of Maggie’s replies to this article on her weibo. Do you guys know what she commented on this?

    1. I was only able to find this comment.

The following line is written by Maggie in rely to Angelakap who said she believe Maggie.

      回复 @Angelakap:我只是想投訴女厠內經常沒厠紙 //

      Translation:

Reply @Angelakap: I just complain the ladies’ washroom often did not have toilet paper.

      1. Oh, thank you for our elaboration. I do not know Chinese.

  6. I remember watching a series (in 1996?) about gangs in Shanghai which she acted as a girl who thought her love (Adam Cheng) did not keep promise and turn against him. She was really old in that movie so after 15…..she looks is understandable.

  7. Since she’s criticised by netizens the award will be Myolie’s for sure. Too bad for Maggie because I’m starting to like her in FH3 too after 5 episodes

  8. Yea she might be a great actress but that doesn’t change the fact that she has a bad attitude towards people and is difficult to work with. Not a lot of people want to deal with that no matter how great or pretty that person might be.

It’s funny when people make excuses for her actions especially when she herself admitted to people viewing her as a difficult person to work with. In her own words from an article translated by Jayne, Maggie has stated, “While filming outdoor scenes in the past, I tried to avoid using outdoor toilets. Thus I would not eat nor drink the entire day. I had high demands for myself and people that I worked with, such as the make-up artists, hairstylists, lighting crew, etc. Many people felt that I was a difficult person to work with. I did not spare other people, nor did I spare myself. I put myself under immense pressure.” http://www.jaynestars.com/news/maggie-cheung-%e2%80%98i-was-a-pain-to-work-with-before%e2%80%99/

N just in my opinion but having overly high demands can be view as a diva. It’s great that she has high demands for herself but what right does she have applying those demands on others. She doesn’t employ the hairstylists or makeup artist they are employed by TVB. If TVB doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with their working habits then what gives her the right to expect more than the people that r actually paying them?

She has also stated, “However, my health turn a drastic turn. At the time, if there was ‘gold on the ground,’ I wouldn’t have been able to pick it up. Designer handbags were no longer necessary. At that point, I realized you can not be so stubborn in life. You need to look at things from multiple angles. If ‘A’ does not work out, it is necessary to try ‘B,’ perhaps there might be better results. When I go back to the TVB studios, I treat myself like a newcomer and maintain an open mind. I believe that work will be more enjoyable that way.”

Too bad that change was just temporary and she reverted back to her old self. It’s a shame because I believe when people go thru challenges in their lives they should come out of it growing as a person. So for her to go thru all that and changed but eventually reverted back to her old self seems like going thru the struggles was for nothing.

    1. Fully agree with you. Sometimes when ones has high expectations on herself, people around her would feel that she’s difficult to get along, very critical etc.

    2. She is not a diva.. she just got a very direct personality… sometimes people really have to warm up.. she is not stubborn.. and if those netizen say maggie have a diva personality, she won’t accept the role in FH3 after Charmaine… She is just serious about her work and career.. this article is seriously bias and extremely over-blowing about this matter.. Netizen sometimes just tend to believe things other ppl say without thinking it over.. I follow maggie drama and news frequently she is a professional actress.. and I see nothing wrong in wanting the best for own career..

  9. I thought people liked her in FH3.

I’m not at all surprised with Maggie’s diva attitude (as she herself admitted it) but this article definitely exaggerated it.

  10. I would like to recommend to those who have not watch this ancient drama “Better Halves”
by Maggie Cheung N Steven Ma.
    You guys gonna love it.

    1. I don’t love it much. Think it’s so-so and like other TVB ancient comedy. SM’s chac in Better Halves is cute, I also like Moses’s chac there. Maybe Joyce Coi is the one I dun like much for this one.

I prefer Colorful Life than Better Halves :P.

      1. I like Colorful life too. hehehe…still prefer Better Halves.

I bought Better Halves disc and watched many times and I still found it interesting.

P/s: Agreed…I don’t quite like Joyce Coi, She seems to mature for Moses.

      2. Better Halves and Where the legend begins made me a SM fan. Of all Steven’s couple pairing, Maggie had the best onscreen chemistry with him,for me.

      3. Stephy: I bought Better Halves disc and watched many times and I still found it interesting.

Me too! Watched it many times and still loving it. Such great chemistry between Steven and Maggie. They just fed off each other’s energy.

      4. Claimine,

Because of Better Halves, I began to fond of Maggie Cheung N Steven Ma, Both of them so sweet and when I watched them , I can felt that I’m in Love too…..hahahahah

      5. To Stephy: Shake hands! But no sure about being in love..haha!

      6. Claimine,

Coz in real life, This is the type of man that I loves to hang out with. hehehe…maybe when I watch this drama I tot I’m Maggie Cheung…hahahaha….

      7. Joyce Coi fit the role she has in this series, but wat I dun like is her character. Among all TVB ancient comedy, I like VOH (ancient one) the most. I think it has many good jokes. Colorful is like a version of VOH so I like it due to VOH.

I rmb that In the eyes of beholders remind me of Better Halves a bit and also the old series of Deric On, TY, Sammul Chan and Mandy Chiang that I dun rmb name. Not the content but the way they are made.

Eternal Happiness is also one of my fave ancient comedy.

      8. oic…Thanks Fox…The episodes very the long de.
If I’m not mistaken, the part 1 was an ancient drama, Part 2 modern drama.

      9. I bought Better Halves too, but, for Moses, Joyce Coi and Kevin Cheng.

      10. @ Fox

“Joyce Coi fit the role she has in this series, but wat I dun like is her character. “

I’m opposite. Joyce Coi’s character is my favourite character in the series. She’s sensible, capable and responsible and won’t throw away everything for love. Not many female characters in ancient series are depicted this way. Most female character in ancient series are the love above everything kind. Joyce Coi’s character is different. She wouldn’t run away from her duty, responsible and family. She wouldn’t just run away with her lover and leave her family to bear the brunt.

      11. I don’t rmb this series much because it dun stay in my head, but I rmb when I watch it, I dun like Joyce Coi’s chac. So can’t argue with you for why :P. Actually now my memory on this series is near by to zero, just rmb that Joyce Coi’s family is swept away from their own house and there is a similar scene in another SM’s series. And my memory of it also include a scene that Moses thinks he is gay and he tries to be a couple with SM, but when SM plays around with him, he punched him. That’s the funniest scene in this series.

@Stephy: VOH is a sitcom, so its natural is long :P. I like its jokes, most are good and funny, but not exaggerated too much. Haha, one of my fave role of Michael Tse.

      12. @Fox – VOH was actually based on Colorful Life. Hence why a lot of the actors in CL were also in VOH.

      13. I noe VOH is based on CL but I watched CL after VOH so my reason to like it because it’s a version of VOH.

  11. an “insider”… a close source said blah blah blah… that is a typical trashloid article. granted I don’t follow Maggie C. related news hence don’t know much about her, but it’s very obvious that this write up is so full of it.

    1. If u don’t know much about her then why r u so sure the article is so “full of it”?

      1. @ Lingling:

Did I ever said that u were right or wrong? I was simply curious on why u r so sure that the article is COMPLETELY false. I simply wanted to see n understand where u’re coming from n how u came to ur conclusion. N it isn’t contradicting when we have separate views. We have different views because although I don’t believe the article is 100% true I do believe it holds some truth whereas u believe it’s completely false. N I wasn’t calling u out so no need to get defensive…it was a simple question.

The only reason I asked u was since u said u don’t read much about her then how do u know if the article holds SOME truth to it. N yes I don’t know if it’s true or not but I definitely gave my reasoning n back them up with examples on my thoughts of the article.

What & who is Adam? I have no idea what u are talking about. R u trying to give an example of not being able to tell one person from another like between Maggie C. n Maggie Q.?

N no need to use foul language or get upset. I question many things because I like hearing different point of views n learning from them. So no need to get defensive n not sure why u feel the need to since it’s juss a simple question. If u feel that u are incapable of having a calm n normal discussion/debate then I wouldn’t wanna deal with someone that can be unreasonable. 🙂

N fyi u might wanna do a spell check on ur word “bu**shiet” 🙂

    2. This is to Kidd:

I never said that this article is 100% correct. But I do believe this article holds some truth but to what extent then no one really knows. In my opinion there has to be smoke in order to produce fire.

I simply stated how it seems that some people make excuses for her difficult attitude by claiming that she has “high demands” when in fact another word for it is her being a diva. According to the previous article she herself even admitted that she is “difficult” to work with.
      http://www.jaynestars.com/news/maggie-cheung-%e2%80%98i-was-a-pain-to-work-with-before%e2%80%99/

N I never said that I KNOW she reverted back to her old ways but that is the impression that I got after reading varies articles about her.
      http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/entertainment/view/1038194/1/.html

      http://www.jaynestars.com/news/wayne-lai-only-allowed-to-eat-bananas-in-order-to-stay-slim/

The second article isn’t stating that she has a bad attitude. But by it mentioning that she often asked people to reapply her makeup gave me the impression that she really cares or emphasize more about her looks than her performance.

Once again I’m not trying to hate on her or anything so no one should be getting all heated over my opinions. I’m simply stating how it’s funny that people seem to make excuses for her when she flat out has admitted to being “difficult” to work with. So to me that gives me the impression that there’s SOME truth to this article because she had a tendency to be difficult.

N IF the article has some truth to it then I would say yea she’s a great actress but it doesn’t give her the right to act like she’s better than anyone else.

      1. “Once again I’m not trying to hate on her or anything so no one should be getting all heated over my opinions. “

And you get heated up over a one sentence question of mine.

There’s no ‘should’ here. You give an opinion. How people take it is up to them.

      2. To kidd(since u don’t have a “reply to this comment):

Hmm that’s funny who says I’m mad over ur one sentence? I don’t think I was yelling or anything. I was basically expressing my opinions thru proof n evidence to back up my impressions of her. =)

“There’s no ‘should’ here. You give an opinion. How people take it is up to them.”

Hmm that seems like saying celebrities aren’t allowed to have personal lives because they are public figures. So whatever they do in their personal lives r up for discussion n “how people take it is up to them”?

N this will be the last time that I reply back to u regarding this article because I don’t want to waste my time talking to someone who doesn’t know how to respect other people’s opinion. FYI people are entitle to their opinions without being judge. Ur comment reminds me of someone in high school. N unfortunately I’m not in high school anymore therefore I would wanna have discussions with people who have the same mindset.

      3. @ Kate

You are entitled to not reply, but, I still want to reply you.

“Hmm that seems like saying celebrities aren’t allowed to have personal lives because they are public figures. So whatever they do in their personal lives r up for discussion n “how people take it is up to them”?”

That’s not even related to what I said. What I mean is, you give your opinion, people take it is up to them instead of you going ‘I give my opinion, people should not take it this and that way’.

“N this will be the last time that I reply back to u regarding this article because I don’t want to waste my time talking to someone who doesn’t know how to respect other people’s opinion. FYI people are entitle to their opinions without being judge. Ur comment reminds me of someone in high school. “

Then, why are you judging lingling’s opinion? Your first comment about people giving excuses for Maggie is already judging their opinion. Aren’t these people entitled to their opinion without being judged? Or entitle just goes one way i.e. to you?

When I first read your comment on the excuse and Maggie hasn’t changed, I already think, how could you determine Maggie hasn’t changed base on this article that might not even be true? You keep saying Maggie admitted she was a difficult person to work with but that was before her illness. She did said she has changed. But, base on this unverifiable, you said she hasn’t changed. But, I keep quiet because you are entitled to your opinion.

It’s only when you question Lingling’s opinion that I throw the question back at you. You then I assume I’m angry and heated and go ‘I’m just giving my opinion, people should be heated about it’, when I’m actually not.

      4. @ Kate

are you kidding me with this? I don’t know Maggie C. from Adam so do you. but when an article was so badly written and has holes big enough for me to push OJ Simpsons through then I would give Maggie C. a benefit of a doubt instead of the trashloid.

Also, isn’t it a sentinel rule that ppl should read tabloids with a grain of salt rather blindly believing it. And if you don’t think the tabloid is a 100% accurate, then where do you come from questioning why I call bu**shiet on it??!! You’re so contradicting.

the “smoke and fire” analogy is for those who like to sensationalize a simple incident. And who is better at it than the tabloids and the ppl reading it like a bible.

      5. @ Lingling- my bad had to post it over since my reply appeared in the wrong place (still learning… 🙂 )

Anyways did I ever say that u were wrong or right? I was simply curious on why u r so sure that the article is COMPLETELY false. I simply wanted to see n understand where u’re coming from n how u came to ur conclusion. N it isn’t contradicting when we have separate views. We have different views because although I don’t believe the article is 100% true I do believe it holds some truth whereas u believe it’s completely false. 3. The problem with this kind of articles with their ‘so full of it..insider blah blah..’is that the falsehood was laced with a smidgen of truth giving it a specious appearance of veracity. While savoring the ‘truth’ flavoring, the exaggeration and falsehood was also consumed along with it. Btw,love the neologism of trashloid. But, some trash may be others’ treasure.

To me, “insider, a close source, informant,” are just euphemisms for wanton gossiper, spiteful backstabber, or the imaginary friend of a lazy reporter. They may or may not speak the truth but they lost their credulity with me hiding behind anonymity.

      1. @ claimine

that’s exactly my point. the article is referencing a phone conversation detail… so who is this insider??? Maggie’s assistant??? other than that, who else is that close to her to be able to report word by word??!! or are they now tapping her phone line? highly doubt that.

I know the media likes to sensationalize every situation. It’s there job… they need to turn in their columns. but at the very least, create a somewhat believable scenario. When crap like this is written, it’s an insult to their readers.

      1. I know which is why I don’t put much stock in insider’s stories. Read it, dismiss it, forget it.

      2. Insiders ‘showed’ their characters if not their faces when attacked someone behind anonymity.

      3. Depends on the revealed info of the “insider” is for the one you like or hate then you think this insider is talking truth or not :P. Or half truth, haha.

      4. @Fox: Let’s put it this way, I don’t remember quoted or will quote an insider’s words (favorable or not)to support my arguments, even for Steven Ma. But don’t go digging up my past posts to prove me wrong, the key word here is ‘remember’. I might have slipped now and then, but generally I won’t quote an insider’s info regardless of my credulity of the report.

        To me:
Reputation is seeming; character is being.
Reputation is manufactured; character is grown. As fans, we should all do well to remember this about our idols.

Whereas I can ‘see’ and appreciate the artists’ hard work and accomplishments over the years, I don’t even know the identity of either the reporters or the insiders much less their accomplishments, but who with a few words blithely can tarnish some hardworking artist’ reputation. A tarnish here and there and soon a new layer of impaired reputation appears. Likewise, some reputations are given a little polish here and there and soon their reputations are buffed up to a lustrous sheen.

But, what you say is generally true: Depends on the revealed info of the “insider” is for the one you like or hate then you think this insider is talking truth or not 😛 . Or half truth, haha.

And so, a new truth is born and believed by a minority if not a majority.

      5. I don’t say you, I say in general. And 😛 = haha mean I’m not serious with this quote.

So actually in general, we blv wat we choose to blv. It’s our right of choice.

      6. @Fox: I saw your icon and knew you were being facetious, but I lost the ladder to my high chair. lol!

How to attach icons to post?

      7. : P (no space) = 😛
        : ) (no space) = 🙂
        🙁 (no space) = 🙁
        : x (no space) = 😡

  12. cant she just do the makeup herself?!!!! its not that hard. just slap on the foundation, powder, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, lips.

she has admitted that she has a bad temper (in stephen chan be my guest) so i’d def not be surprised if this was true.

    1. Often artists’ makeup for work are dictated by their boss to fit the theme or the storyline. So usually makeup artists are there to handle that. Also, artists often need to mentally prepare for their own work so they have to stay focus while their makeup are being applied.

  13. During filming it’s difficult to do the reapplying on her own as the make up artist already use their cosmetic products on her, if she will to use her own cosmetic items, it will not be suitable as the color or shade of foundation, powder, lip stick or blusher will not match the other shades that has had been used. moreover there are so many lighting in the studio and the normal make up is useless. Unless when she is in the event / restaurant and she demanded a make up artist to reapply for her than it is nuisance.

    1. A professional make up artist will not allowed someone to alter or make changes on their finishing.

  14. do u want Producer Jonathan Chik to take myolie wu & linda chung act in war & beauty 2????

  15. I definitely think this article is blowing it out of proportion, it does sound very biased. I know that she has a bad temper and has high expectations of people, so I’m not making any excuses for her even though I think she’s a brilliant actress. I do think the general view of her acting is not that it’s uninspired, shall I say, though I have not watched FHIII and don’t intend to.

Myolie better not get TV Queen, she’s not up to par. At all. There are so many more eminently qualified candidates who deserve it so much more. PFFT.

    1. I beg to differ. Myolie is the strongest among the nominee this year. Tell me who are your ‘qualified candidates’? I don’t think you mean Fala in her childlike performance in LOO or Tavia in her seemingly uninspired performances in her 3 series?

      1. Agreed with lol.

        Fala,Tavia,Kate Tsui,Linda & Myolie,

Just my POV,I still prefer Myolie, watching her diff dramas series, i won’t getting bored but the rest mentioned above is yuck.

      2. You r right Fox.

        1) The Rippling Blossom
        2) Men With No Shadow
        3) Yes Sir , Sorry Sir
        4) The Other Truth.

        4 series for 2011

    2. It depends on Myolie’s performance and character in the upcoming The Queen of all Queens (or whatever it is call now) as well, and don’t forget about Jessica too. She might surprise the audience as well. From the brief clips, both of them have potential. If she doesn’t do well, then I would root for Tavia Yeung over Fala Chen/Kate Tsui any day. Fala & Kate totally do not deserve it.

      1. Why Myolie did good in 2/3 series she had this year but if 1/3 isn’t very good, you will root for someone with all bad this year?

      2. Myolie already did well in GJ and TRB. GJ especially.

Tavia had some good performances in the past, but this is not her year.

      3. An award should be the best performance for a particular performance, not like meat to be distributed or based on a body of work. If an actor does excellent for one role but did terribly for 20 roles of that year, if that 1 role is over and above others, then the award should be given to that particular actor.

      4. IMO, Myolie did ok in the Ghetto Justice not particularly outstanding or anything, although she did gain popularity after that, but I did like her portrayal in The Rippling Blossom which was refreshing (which I forgot about) but both characters aren’t the type that screamss Best Actress material to me. I agree Tavia isn’t strong this year as well but I did like her portrayal in The Rippling Blossom and The Other Truth (consistent performance but also doesn’t screamss Best Actress characters) so if it’s the same, then why not go with Tavia who I feel is the better actress of the two?

      5. @Funn: Since an award is based on a particular performance, it’s even more “unfair” for Myolie if she is judged by her terrible (assumed) or amazing (assumed) or so-so (assumed) performance in Curses of something (aka Queens of All).

@Jadedreams: I guess you are kinda making hard to Myolie. Maybe you are more of a TY fan? I guess most of ppl agree that Myolie overshadowed TY in TRB, the series that they are together. And coincidentally, they are lawyers in the next series, and I also think ppl evaluate Myolie’s lawyer higher than TY. Ppl here I’m referring to the comments in HK forums and also the rating :P.

A mini question (just because I’m curious): In YSSS TY did a bad job, so if you watch YSSS (assumed that you haven’t watched or watched but don’t like – because you don’t mention of it), do you root for Myolie instead :P? It’s one of TY’s performance this year and she doesn’t do well, then by the above statement, I guess you will root for Myolie?

Uhm, in case you want to ask for my opinions, I dun think of anyone in the main leads to have very outstanding acting this year and the one I think of with good acting is not in the main leads list :P. So far, I think Myolie deserves to win because she, at least, is not being overshadowed in her own series.

      6. “@Funn: Since an award is based on a particular performance, it’s even more “unfair” for Myolie if she is judged by her terrible (assumed) or amazing (assumed) or so-so (assumed) performance in Curses of something (aka Queens of All).”

Fox I don’t get your point. That situation will not arise if she is not nominated for her terrible performance. You don’t give an award for her performance in one series and yet take into account her performances in other series.

      7. You are talking my point. See what series she will be nominated first.

    3. I agree so much at ur comment of myolie not up to par yet for TV queen… maggie is better..

  16. This is really disappointing to hear as Maggie’s character and story was one of the great parts of War and Beauty.

    At least Sheren is back!

      1. Kidd, don’t u forgot that TVB produce is God. They will bring her back to live.
        Hehehe

      2. And since when has character death ever stopped a producer before? 😛 Besides… I think all we actually saw was her pass out on the ride out didn’t we? I don’t think anyone actually said she was dead. We all assumed that.

(I think that’s how it went… it was so long ago now :P)

      3. She died because she was very seriously injured. And TVB should have story integrity. Which is why their quality is going down; the just keep doing the resurrection and none the new stuff.

      1. @ Uyenta
        Thanks for the correction.
Sorry for my poor grammar 😛

      2. it’s okay, your grammar is great, and no need to say sorry, but thanks i appreaciate you thank you. it feels really great to help someone out, and get a happy feedback

      3. Uyenta.

In future, If you happens to see my post with wrong grammar feels free to correct me.
I really wants someone to help me to improved.

P/s: hope the readers here won’t feeling annoyed.

        Thanks

  17. Kings in series now don’t like 18, 19 girls anymore, they prefer 18x2s LOL

  18. Maggie Cheung is a good actress, and I think that some quite talented people/leaders have strong demands on others to do well which is not a bad thing. She’s very blunt and straightforward compared to others who appear to be friendly although she would definitely do better if she is more approachable and less direct. Did any of the makeup artistes informed her that they’re running behind on schedule? If she had arrived on time and waited for 15 minutes and no one told her that then of course she would not be happy.

  19. There’s always two sides to every story so somewhere in the middle is the truth. TVB executives may not like her 100% so she gets less of a star treatment as compared to the others thus she is venting out loud that she should be treated the same like the others. From what I read about TVB and their execs, they can be pretty demeaning, brutal and condescending to their employees. No wonder so many are jumping ship while the opportunities are there.

  20. lol – now i know that it wasn’t jessica hsuan being the difficult one in the late 90’s when she and maggie had that big dispute.

i still like her acting though. it would be nice to keep her on the series.

  21. I’d say there’s definitely a pinch of truth but the article is way biased and exagerrated. I remember during Super Trio last year Eric Tsang was joking about how Maggie was showing diva qualities even as early as Miss HK. I remember in the 90s Lydia Shum publically complained about Maggie’s tardiness which the former felt (and rightly so) was unprofessional. Hopefully that’s something she’s corrected over the years.

    1. I also wanted to mention Eric Tsang’s Story too. But I think the reporter probably exaggerated a little. I hope she is not as bad as the reporters mentioned about getting along with her co-workers.

      1. With one complain, that doesn’t make a big deal but with more than one complain? Who trust there? maggie alone or the 2,3 or maybe 10 ppl?

      2. 10 praises, nobody cares. 1 complaint, the world shatters. Does 1 represent the majority? Though 1 complaint must be taken into account, but frankly it is not the end of the world.

      3. Funn,

People just like to listen to bad/negative news rather than positive ones. weird, I wonder why too but whether or not Maggie has a diva atittude or not, it won’t discontinue me from not watching her lol. Like LF, even he has a rather casanova lifestyle in real, I still watch his series, probably because I don’t fancy any idol so deep till I wanted to meet them in person so their bad life/negative news won’t do any harm/affect on me.

      4. @Veejay:
With one complain, that doesn’t make a big deal but with more than one complain? Who trust there? maggie alone or the 2,3 or maybe 10 ppl?

Poll is skewed to begin with, not to mention small size and sample biasness. Go ask people who enjoy working with MC, like Steven Ma.

After all these years, Steven Ma still considers Maggie Cheung to be his best onscreen partner.

@Funn Lin: ,“10 praises, nobody cares. 1 complaint, the world shatters.”

It also depends on who the artist is, and whether the reporter wants to raise or sink him/her.

In HK Discussion forum, I notice there maybe a long thread filled with criticisms against a certain artist’s acting but it was not reported.

Conversely, one netizen made one complaint about a certain artist and it got blown up as the majority’s opinion.

        So go figure!

Out of curiosity I google the word “loid”as in tabloid. I was amused by its urban dictionary meaning = 2. loid. a tool, retarded, not by chance but by ignorance. just the epitome of being stupid and not having any clue.

      5. re-editing the italics in my above post

      6. Hi Claimine,

First of all, how do you close your italic wording? I didnt close mine properly last time ended up the rest of the posts italic’d. Truly sorry about that.

As for your explanation, I’ll try to put mine in a different view/opinion compare to yours.

SM was definitely supporting MC when she was excused for acting diva and such. That’s what a friend for “supporting each others”. And MC may not be a diva but a straightforward person who expect high quality of services which was described by some ppl here therefore, she can get along well with SM who is also known as someone straightforward and righteous. I’m not an anti-fan of MC, i wwas just giving another illustration for MC why ppl see her acting all diva and such. Maybe it wont be seen by her fans but non-fan like me can actually thought of different reasons why ppl claimed MC is a diva.

My point is there are always ppl who can “stand” and get along with MC, same goes to those ppl who can’t stand her whether her. But the question here why ppl criticise her if she’s truly “FREE” of those allegations?

      7. Sorry, I didn’t delete some of the sentences there thus making them confusing haha. Posted in hurry and didnt check lol.

      8. @veejay to close italics no space

And MC may not be a diva but a straightforward person who expect high quality of services which was described by some ppl here therefore, she can get along well with SM who is also known as someone straightforward and righteous.

MC is diva with her demanding attitude; SM is male Ah Jie charged with 5 crimes, no wonder they get along so well. 😛

Depending on perspectives: a strength may be viewed as a shortcoming; a virtue as a vice, and vice verse.

      9. close italics no space

Oh,Because nobody can be free of allegations not with tabloids around to stir things up.

      10. Just sort of off topic here.. Erm how does one italicize the sentences?

      11. CY,
To italicize, use the triangular brackets and put “i” inside it. Make sure to close the triangular brackets with “/i” when you are done with the italics.

    2. @ Jayne

Thanks so much, I shall experiment with it now. So does that mean I put “/i”? Does it show immediately when I type or will the italics show up only after posting?

      1. Eh that was weird. Sorry for that post and this one too. “/i”

      2. Testing again. So sorry for spamming the comments wall like this, Jayne. “/i”

      3. CY,

        Try this to italicize:

Type this: triangular brackets < i > without the spaces. Then close the italicize function with < / i > without all the spaces.

        Hope it works for you.

      4. @ Jayne

Thanks again. So sorry to trouble you. Me and computers don’t go well. Here goes

      5. Hahaha, it works!!! Thanks so much Jayne! I was always wondering how the other commentators could italicize their sentences, especially Kidd.

      6. I have once test with before but my post still italic. At that time, I post as a new post. Maybe I need to post as a reply to the post with open to work.

      7. Damn. I purposely put space inside to tag so that it shows the tag instead of italising my post. But, someone this page still see those as tags.

  22. Maggie is a great actress and if TVB treated their vets better, they might not have to suffer her “foul moods” because they would have other actresses ready to take over. But they don’t.

I’m excited for WABII because of Sheren and Ada collaborating, but it is disappointed that Charmaine and Maggie won’t be back. Look for the latter two’s roles to be filled with the usual in-house fa dans.

  23. Fu”An award should be the best performance for a particular performance, not like meat to be distributed or based on a body of work. If an actor does excellent for one role but did terribly for 20 roles of that year, if that one role is over and above others, then the award should be given to that particular actor.” Funn Lim, I could not agree more than what you have said, my sentiments exactly. To add to this, the actor I have in mind is Kevin Cheng. I think he gave a brilliant performance in Ghetto Justice and even the producer was surprised. He had previously been criticized for many of his series and I do hope that that will not be counted against him.

As for Maggie Cheong, the subject under discussion, I do hope that If she has also done well enough to win an award, she should get it and not be penalised for “bad” behaviour. That’s besid the point.

  24. I would also like to add that Maggie Cheong should not be penalised for her seemingly bad behaviour and be excluded from acting in War and Beauty2. It is such a pity as her presence would certainly be an asset to the series.

    1. If the news is true about Maggie acting Diva and etc and eventually got dumped by Producer Chik from being in WAB2, I think Producer Chik will have his own reason doing so.

    2. I don’t think that Jonathan will not want Maggie cox he haven’t verify the above matter to the media.

The above report was based on one article from a assuming reporter.

Furthermore TVB is short of Fadans.

Hope she will be in for this grand production.

      Good Luck Maggie.

    3. may be is her straight forward character..l like her acting, hope she is in that play’

  25. From the article, I think it’s the reporter who doesn’t like Maggie so is slapping these accusations on her. First of all, Maggie is well known for not liking to repeat roles that she doesn’t think it’s necessary to repeat and that has a high expectation. She turned down Country Spirit because it’s too much like Plain Love II. She turned down Tina in At the Threshold of an Era because she didn’t think the role was challenging for her. She seems to be interested in The Great Eunuch and Empress Lu, one of which would start filming at the same time as WB2. So from the get go she was already not interested in WB2. BTW, Chik Kei Yi was supposed to do Eunuch, but he stepped down and only served as executive producer, Marco Law would produce it instead. But it’s still within the area Chik oversees. It doesn’t make any sense that he doesn’t like her so he banned her from participating.

People in the industry tend to misunderstand Maggie’s personality to be diva like. Based on an article Steven Ma wrote about Maggie a few years ago, she has a very straight forward personality and great expectations. Producer/director Stanley Kwan cast Maggie in Cheung Han Gor (To Live To Love) because, he said, she is almost exactly like Wang Qi Yao. She does what she likes and doesn’t care what others say. She has high expectations and will scold you if they are not met. She brushes off people she doesn’t want to deal with because life is too short to care. She’s vocal. All of these things seem to match Maggie and can easily be read as a diva. You have to take into account Maggie’s friends such as Steven Ma, Elaine Kong, Joyce Tang, Sandra Ng, Michelle Yim, Joe Ma, etc. are people who will not deal with one’s diva attitude. How can they be friends with her if she is a diva like this article described? Like Maggie said, she was just complaining about toilet papers not being readily available.

Actors have a difficult task because not only they have to put out their physical strength but also mental strength. If they’re working, their mental state has to be available for the scene. If they’re promoting, they still have to be salespeople, selling their project by promoting it. So if the little things like toilet papers and makeup artists are not ready for them, of course they can appear a little antsy.

Also, based on the pics, that’s the same day Maggie had her Forensic Heroes 3 promotional event, has nothing to do with WB2 costume fitting.

    1. Hrmm..Empress Lu and Empress Cixi in the same year for Maggie…

  26. Sudden Weekly? Haha..take this as a grain of salt :P. Heck even Mingpao Weekly also manipulates and add extra spices to the “real story”; if there was one in the first place :P…

    1. Wow! More noise more chances…

My guessing for this year best actress award will go to Maggie Cheung. :p

      1. Not necessarily, Forensic Heroes 3 alone isn’t gonna carry the weight over to her this year. It depends on how her manager negotiates with TVB. If TVB Awards are fixed, as many of us expected, her manager will probably demand TVB to allow Maggie to do both Empress Lu, and Great Eunuch and get the award for Best Actress next year.

  27. I don’t care about the article. I still like Maggie Cheung’s acting. She’s good at portraying different characters. Unlike some other actresses who keeps playing the same characters over and over again.

  28. I don’t care about the article. I still like Maggie Cheung’s acting. She’s good at portraying different characters. Unlike some other actresses who keeps playing the same characters over and over again.

  29. If I were Maggie, I would choose Big Eunuch and Empress Lu over WAB2. WAB2, I have to share the lead with so many people. In Big Eunuch and Empress Lu, I’m the main female lead. What more, in Empress Lu, I will be the main lead, not just the lead actress.

Plus, I remember Maggie said during the filming of ‘The Conqueror’s Story’ that there are several female historical people she wish to play. Empress Lu was one of them. I remember Wuzetian was the other woman she wish to play. I don’t remember Cixi was on her list or not.

    1. She will not be the right actress for Wuzetian. But Empress Lu sounds good.

      1. Who do you feel will be right to act Wuzetian? If the central character is WZT, you can’t find a too old actress because the actress need to play WZT from young.

      2. 刘晓庆 (Liu Xiao Qing) acted Wu Ze Tian too many time, so whenever I think of Wu Ze Tian, she pops up. She acts Wu Ze Tian how many times? Must be more than 3. From 18 to 72.

      3. 620 suitable role will be Wh*re Mummy:P

I can’t think of others. What about Nancy Wu Ding Yan, she has a good acting skill but unfortunately she is not the fine line fadans. Haiz

      4. I’ve watched both Fung Bo Bo’s and 刘晓庆’s (Liu Xiao Qing) WZT. They were both marvelous but I enjoyed LXQ’s performance and her series more. I watched the one when LXQ was 13-14 (?) when she entered the palace. I didn’t know her age then when she acted that role but I was totally blown away by her performance from a coquettish, naive girl to a seductive, manipulative concubine to the ruthless ‘Emperor’. Biased as I am, I can’t imagine any tvb artist portraying WZT as well as them, let alone surpass them.

    2. Haha if later she were to play Wuzetian too, then Maggie is checked off all three “evil” empresses(as per discussed the other day :P)

    3. Is Empress Lu wife of the puppet Emperor Puyi,do she have affair with the eunuch who play by waynei lai in real history?

      1. @Moses – Empress Lu was Liu Bang’s wife, during the Han dynasty. Puyi was the nephew of Guangxu, who was the “son” of Empress Dowager Cixi. Cixi and Wayne Lai’s role Li Lianying were really close – I wouldn’t call it an affair though. Maggie will play Cixi.

      2. Empress Lu is Liu Bang’s wife, but I think she carried out several affairs with the generals under her watch. She killed all of Liu Bang’s men after he became emperor.

  30. I find Maggie Cheung a bit of a spoilt brat with her kind of attitude. Don’t like her, never did and never will. Don’t think she’s particularly great as an actress either – just ok. Nothing spectacular I’m sorry to say. Unfortunately there are less and less fadans left now, so maybe thats why she’s putting on this diva “I’m a big star” atttude. She better be careful or else she will really lose some of her fans.

  31. Maggie will always be one of my favs. Maybe it’s the high target which she sets for herself and she expects others to do the same. It’s about professionalism and some may not have the same attitude as she has.

  32. Hope things will fall in place for her. She’s beautiful & good actress.
She adds credibilty to all the roles she did. Have always enjoy her acting.

  33. I don,t mind she a diva ,every actor n actress r diva ,who ever r not a diva they just faking it ,come on!! don,t tell me no one know about all this ,i do believe if a producer or someone at the studio don,t like u ,u will get a black mark on your face ,Unfortunately maggie don,t play the field , nature she will get complained , every single thing u do every move ,every characters or even your face get to blah blah blah about it , i guess someone want myolie to be the tvb queen badly, so this is what all about just to create some diva story n @#$* your reputation up so get the result with all this comment and by saying u criticized by netizen ,hong kong people are so E C to manipulates ,anyway i guess myolie the fake queen will be the tvb queen soon hahahhhaa…

  34. I liked Maggie Cheung in her early career prior to her role as Chan Bo Chu in “Old Time Buddy.” For a few years, she seemed as if she could not shake off her Chan Bo Chu characterization, even in “King of Yesterday and Tomorrow.”

Maggie does have a grace and soft-spokeness that reminds me very much of one of my favorite actresses, Lau Suet Wah (劉雪華).

Btw, a commentator asked who would play Wu Zetian well. The young Lau Suet Wah or Michelle Yim would have been good fits. Among the younger actresses, I can’t think of anyone…

    1. I was thinking who is Lau Suet Wah. Liu Xue Hua!! Yes yes good choice. Can cry, can act, has very expressive eyes. My other choice would be a young.. what’s her name? I can only name her as the Woman King in the story of the Land of Women in JTTW TVB?

      1. Michelle Yim is great for Wu Zetian. Lau Suet Wah—not really. First of all, she’s too waify to play that role. Secondly, I never found her crying to be convincing. She’s like Demi Moore, can turn on the waterfall on demand but there’s no inner feelings coming out. If Lau Suet Wah is balling and I’m not feeling a thing, it ain’t real. If an actor can make one cry without having to ball his eyes out, that’s some real sh*t.

      2. Liu Xue Hua’s crying made me cry buckets. :p

I sort of remember her acted Empress Cixi but never got to finish that series, for reason I can’t remember now. Just remember her expressive eyes emoting strong emotions.

      3. Claimine,
Love Liu Xue Hua, although not a fan of Qiong Yao series. I prefer Liu Xua Hua in her old RTV series. Watched Empress Cixi in my childhood, but too young to remember her performance.

    2. Hi Jayne,

Did you watch To Live To Love, starring Maggie Cheung, Tse Kwan Ho, and Huang Yi? I believe it to be one of Maggie’s most incredible works. Unfortunately, it seems to me that the series was not much well-received and was underestimated despite the fact that it was significant regarding production, adaption, costumes, and cast choice. Maggie fits Wong Kei Yiu very well, from appearance to personality. It is a pity that not many people know of this drama and discuss it.

      1. Yeah she’s great in there. It’s too depressing I guess, but acting wise and storyline = top notch. Stanley Kwan said Maggie’s forthright personality is very similar to Kei Yiu, hence, both off and on screen, they get negative rumors from bystanders.

      2. Have not watched MC’s tv series version, but have watched the movie of the same name starring Sammi Cheng.

    1. Horsesh*t, it sounds like the writer of that article was complaining about Aimee using Maggie’s name. The picture of Maggie talking to Tim Gor that they used was capture when she was discussing her role with Tim Gor, which he likes to do with his actors. On the same day, even Aimee wrote on her weibo thanking Maggie for treating them dinner that night. Maggie has adore Aimee as a person for a long time, she wrote on Aimee’s weibo last year.

    2. I guess you are one that don’t like maggie.. but stop spreading bad rumours about her please..

  35. Who is Joyce Coi in better halves?I never heard on this actress before in Tvb, is she a singer?
Are Kenneth ma also feature in better halves?

  36. I think she’s too direct & blunt.
If she has more EQ it’ll be perfect!
Real pity she’s one of the better actresses. Still have always enjoy her shows!

  37. I don’t think maggie personality is a problem.. if it is a problem, things won’t go smooth for her since her career beginning.. see how she won the TV Queen in 2003 and the many good friends she had in tv industry like steven ma and joe ma.. Regarding her direct personality and high expectation, it is herself.. everyone have their own expectation and that is what make a person.. I see nothing wrong in wanting to succeed in own career and have demands for oneself.. Maggie Cheung Ho Yee is a good actress and without her own personality and dedication to each roles she portray in each tvb drama, we won’t be able to see such great acting from her..

  38. I think maggie and jessica are the best actress with the same characters which is make them different from others. But tavia can definetely play their roles. Fala is juz an actress with pretty face and can’t act at all. Linda’s good in her crying scene… No one can cry as good as her. I love myolie in gettho justice but hate her acting in the curse of royal harem. If she won the best actress in dat series…very unfair when jessica did very well in dat series. Bring jessica and maggie backkkkkk… I miss ada, maggie, jessica, flora chan, kenix…
