Michelle Yeoh Does not Want to Discuss Politics

Despite her busy schedule, Malaysian-born actress Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) set aside time to go back to Malaysia to openly support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib for the upcoming 2013 general election 2. Aware that her support of the controversial political party aroused criticisms, Michelle does not want to discuss and talk about her country’s politics outside of Malaysia.

In Malaysia early this month, Michelle expressly stood behind the Prime Minister and his ruling party. Against many netizens’ regard, she attended the gathering organized to show support for Najib. Not one to shy away from her opinions, she further urged the public to vote for the ruling party last Saturday. Her decision incurred the fury of many netizens who lashed out unrelenting verbal attacks at her.

However, now that Michelle is back in Hong Kong to attend Guerlain’s promotional event as the brand’s ambassador, she does not want to talk further about politics and insisted that all that she had wanted to say was already said in Malaysia.

No Time for Wedding

The usually tight-lipped Michelle was more ready to talk about her relationship with fiancé Jean Todt than politics. Since 2011, the couple has been travelling around the world, heavily promoting the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA’s) latest safety campaign. Recently back from Africa, Michelle will be busying herself with a new  major Southeast Asian project.

With little time left from work, Michelle and Jean are having difficulty finding time to get married. The couple hopes to be able to not only host a wedding banquet in Malaysia where Michelle’s family lives, but also around the world where all their friends are located. Due to the elaborate celebrations, their wedding plans may have to be deferred to next year.

Lost Touch with Isabella Leong

In 2008, Michelle had introduced good friend, Isabella Leong (梁洛施) to Hong Kong billionaire, Richard Li (李澤楷). Despite their age differences, Isabella and Richard had three sons out of wedlock. However, the couple separated in 2011 amicably. When asked about Isabella’s new boyfriend, Michelle revealed that she has not been in contact with Isabella and did not know about her new beau. Michelle said, “As long as she is happy, I give her my blessings!”

  1. You are a disgrace to all Malaysian Chinese. You supported a party who call you as Pendatang (Visitor) to a country which you are born in. Traitor

    1. Agree with u!! I am boycotting all her movies!!

      1. Malaysian has been regards as second class citizen by this rulling party and yet she claims Najib is the best PM. I believe she uses her ass for a brain.

      2. Agreed, Me n my family are boycotting all her movies too.
We just dont beilieve that she is supporting such unfair election and dictator Najib. U are right Jenny, she actually uses her ass fr a brain.

      3. MY deserved all the brickbats she received from netizens……& I am no exception……at my hometown in Ipoh, we have already ‘hentam’ her much…but hopefully this will all die down in a couple of months.

    2. Let’s not expect too much from these “ex-beauty pageant ladies”, so-called overrated actress-type and political wannabe’s like Michelle……..she does not have enough brains in her asss to make political comments and it’s just her way of staying in spotlight……

    3. she is ‘ugly’ without brain…traitor to us chinese. Boycott all her events and products

      1. she’s not that pretty on the outside, not beautiful on the inside as well

      2. She is well fed pig, ready to be roasted for consumption. A woman without substance.

    4. Malaysian Chinese? Are we still segregating by race? I thought we were only supposed to be MALAYSIANS?

But again, door swings both ways and you whiners just swing it whichever way it suits you, right?

  2. Michelle yeoh are just a overated actress, she really a traitor to all malaysia ,hey a vote for Mca is a vote for perkasa ,by the ways she just old chicken ,she sleep with old white man just for money.

  3. damn! i dun care how good she is as an actress, but she has a right to support any politician. and to the anti-government netiziens, please dun talk bull about these politicians are corrupt or bla bla bla. if u r doing that, u r no different from the macais of the government supporters. just let her be…shame on you, people

    1. Agreed. Everyone has the right to choose. Just because it is not the same as yours doesnt mean its wrong..or right. Stop being overzealous and learn to truly understand democracy.

      1. Let’s not throw around this “democracy” word so carelessly. The fact of the matter is, there are no real and transparent democracies anymore.

And this isn’t some tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist stuff. Take North Korea for instance, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea…they sure as hell ain’t democratic. HK is pretty much a puppet-state and it’s not 2046 already since CY Leung is communist party supporter and has had his agencies bribe people to support him in opinion polls and protests.

      2. Paprika is a dumb@#$. Please have some form of education before you “uphold” the word democracy.

      3. Iawnaek, the fact that you call me names already shows your ‘education’. And that you do not allow others to have different opinion also shows your level of maturity.

      4. In spite of your “education”, you still speak like a dumb@#$. So that label fits you perfectly, dumb@#$.

    2. Please who support the current govt. does not know the reality of Malaysian life. how much we (chinese) had been deprived and bully by those ‘idoit’

      1. You have been deprived? How? I’ll assume you are Chinese. Your family middle class? Which race has the biggest share of the middle class pie? Your parents not earning enough? You don’t have a house to live in? You are typing your posts from a cybercafe? You don’t own a mobile/smartphone?

Now, if you say that you are the victim of a race quota be it for education, etc. then I’ll agree with you, yes, in that sense, you have been marginalised.

Deprived is a strong word, and have you TRULY been deprived? I’m not saying what the current govt is doing is right, but you make it sound like you’re living in a shack and your basic human rights have been denied.

      2. I agree with Rambling Mind.

Yes, we don’t get as much privilege, freebies and help as the majority race, but, we are hardly depraved.

How many chinese own imported cars, ipads, smartphones etc? And every time I went to Jusco on a weekend, I see Sakae Sushi, I-Canton, I-Dragon full house.

A depraved person won’t have money to buy all these luxuries.

Wanting more fairness, meritocracy, transparency is good. But, don’t exaggerate our current condition.

      3. Rambling & Kidd gang,

On appearance, the non-Malays esp the Chinese may not have suffer extreme poverty as they work hard to earn a living. It’s their inner feeling that they feel hurt when UMNO continue to classify them as second class citizen with no fair rights to education, jobs and opportunities.
Likewise there are now many Malays who feel the same hardship as the non-Malays as all the privileges of the government are now given to UMNO cronies.

      4. Banlas, you are absolutely right. Therefore, to say that you have been deprived is incorrect, no?

    3. Serendipity, shame on you too,if you are not a Malaysian, then you have no right to comment and know nut about life in Malaysia, the present BN government has caused so much 0f hardship to its citizen, and this woman openly supported the Govt

    4. Please.. If u have no idea or ignorance to what happen in M’sia probably u will support her. Our future has been destroyed by them if we continue to support PM. We Chinese community here had been bullied & termed us as ‘pendatang dari china’ . All our hard earned money went to feed those greedy corrupted minister. For god sake, if she were so dumb about what happening in current politics, I suggest she better save her words & do not support any side of party.

      1. If you feel so strongly about it, have more children. Get your relatives and your friends to have 6, 7 children. Then in 1 generation, you have a say.

The chinese population in Malaysia is 28%. Want to make a difference, have more children. Blaming the govt, the sky, the earth, and Michelle Yeoh is not going to help you.

And if you think changing the govt will bring you instant results, boy, are you gonna be in for one massive disappointment

      2. Chinese would have wanted more children if the chinese in Malaysia are treated equally as MALAYSIAN. Because Chinese are marginalized and the cost to upbring a child is so costly (especially having a good tertiary education), most Chinese decided to have only 2 – 3. It is MY’s right to decide who to choose but she does not need to ASK other people to follow her decision. She is a celebrity and she knows she has have STAR POWER to INFLUENCE people. Or else NAJIB won’t be asking her to attend the dinner and gave a speech. Why don’t NAJIB ask you to attend the dinner and give that speech? Anybody could do it. To me, it is politically not correct for MY to declare publicly. Remember Myolie Wu was also bashed by HK citizens for supporting her bro-in-law just by appearing at the scene?

      3. Uh, the Malays also can have more children because their Malay childcare fees are cheaper, not because of government sponsors, but, because the Malay childcarer charged cheaper.

The government provide free education until Form 6 for all races, and everyone with family income lower than a certain amount gets buku pinjaman (borrowed books). All races are also eligible for study loans.

The chinese want a quality life for their children, so, they send the children to good childcare center, send the children to tuition, kumon, erican and piano/singing/karate/painting lessons, which of course causes a lot. I don’t think the Malays get all these extra lesson free from the government. I believe a Malay couple who want to provide all these for their children will also need to spend a lot of money.

As for tertiary education. A lot of my colleagues graduated from local universities or TAR colleges. It’s not off-limit.

      4. No, in Malaysia, Chinese are motivated by economics. You CHOOSE not to have more kids because of the rising cost of living. If you (and other Chinese who are whinging) want to have more say in government, please, raise the numbers of the Chinese population. It’s simple maths, the race with the greatest numbers has most say and the govt of the day WILL pander to them.

You think it’s going to be different under a new govt? You think the new govt will be more “fair” to the minorities? You don’t think the new government will pander to the majority? If history has taught you anything, it’s that the minorities ALWAYS get screwed, no matter in what country.

      5. As you say, since we are all MALAYSIAN and there should be no race barriers, why don’t you put your kids in Malay childcare, you could definitely save the money to have another kid.

        Yeah, I thought so……

      6. “To me, it is politically not correct for MY to declare publicly. Remember Myolie Wu was also bashed by HK citizens for supporting her bro-in-law just by appearing at the scene?”

Myolie was bashed not because supported her brother in-law. Myolie was bashed because she supported the unpopular party. Same case as Michelle Yeoh.

      7. I think she was bashed because she supported the party simply because of her bro in law.

      8. @ Funn

She was bashed because the party she supported is pro-PRC which many HK netizens did not like.

She was already bashed heavily before she came out and said ‘I was only supporting my brother in-law. I know nothing about politics.’.

      9. Then that;s unfair. Any bashing should be because of “‘I was only supporting my brother in-law. I know nothing about politics.’.”

  4. serendipity, if you are a fellow malaysian i’m sure you will feel the same sentiments as the rest of the people here though i must admit the choice of words are a lil harsh. Michelle is merely supporting Najib bcos her dad is a politician themselves and has obviously benefited in some ways! she doesn’t give a damn about the outcome of the elections bcos she nor her next generation needs to live with the consequences. She is probably paid to give the speech anyway….i’ve totally lost respect for her. She should have stayed out of it!

    1. @ soph,

I agree with you. If you do follow news and by news I don’t mean the crap in the mainstream media provided back in Msia, then you will know how bad things have became in the years.
She was probably paid by the ‘dear’ gov to give that speech anyway.
And while I agree that she has a right to support whoever she wants, she should not be using her celebrity status to influence the minds of the populace.

      1. How did she exactly use her celebrity status to influence minds of the populace?

Oh, you mean that she should not have come out to say that she supports BN because she’s a celeb?

Or are you saying that the populace are so feeble minded that they’ll follow every word she says?

Or are you saying that because she’s a celebrity, therefore she should be denied her rights to speak as a free citizen whoever she supports?

Or is it just convenient to blame Michelle Yeoh for your own inability to make a difference?

    2. michelle yeoh should shut up, she doesn’t pay taxes or live in malaysia

  5. just to share a true story as it happened to few of my friends who attended the speech. Those who supplied their IC number to attend our dear Michelle Yeoh’s PKFZ dinner are now unable to vote in the coming elections! Their names have been removed from the electoral roll. Please spread the news around and get those involved to quickly check and lodge complaint immediately. That includes anyone that had received their goodies. Sad…this is going to be the dirtiest election ever.

    1. I was told by a taxi driver his name was shifted to another school/district. I checked mine, first was place A when my family place B but a week later back to Place A. It has always been dirty. Drawing the constituency line is dirty business.

      1. P/S Every day on TV every commercial time our dear PM’s chinese educated son will have his say. And there I was wondering, after the 3rd repeat of the hour, why don’t our PM have the balls to say what his son is saying himself? That is Chinese are important? Well my sis said “Because then the others will lynch him”. No balls. In fact his wife has more balls than him and let’s not speak too loud unless you want a C4 hurled at you. And it will be a she doing it, not he! Luckily Jayne’s website is in US, free speech everyone!

      2. Yeah and every ruling govt will do it.

  6. Yes I have heard of that too. A few friends who attended other similar 1M/gov rallies and provided their ICs have also been removed from the electoral roll and now can’t vote as well.

  7. I used to love her passion in acting but I’m so disgusted with her involvement in Msia politics esp after all the bad things that happened to Msians while she happily enjoy life out of Msia but stepped in to stir further our problems. Come live in Msia if u dare & u’ll see the unbearable fears Msians have to live with the gov u supported! U are a disgrace to your nation!

  8. It’s hard for outsiders to comment on this as they do not know what is really going on the country and how oppressed most Chinese feel. I do not agree with dissing Michelle like this but I can understand why everyone is angry.

    1. Yes I agree. I see Michelle getting a lot of flak, maybe she should have done a little more homework , like find out what is really going on in M’sia, before giving her high profile support. I mean, she is after all a public figure.

But then again, it’s her free right to support whoever she wants, with or without knowledge of their deeds.

  9. It is her right to support whoever she wants to support, her right to speak for whoever she wishes to speak for. To call her a traitor is to deny her right as a voter, a Malaysian and as a human being. She is only involved as far as showing her support for the party and candidate she approves, like many here do so for the opposition except you’re not as famous well known or exposed as she may be. At least she knows who she is supporting and why rather than some stars who support for support sake. Let her exercise her right and on voting day you exercise yours.

    1. you talking show that you are BN hot supporter ,i bet you are bn cyber trooper ,how much najib paid you?

      1. Some people are just really crazy nowadays. It’s because their minds have been poisoned, and they are not much different from the Taliban.

      2. Najib paid me 6 mansions, 3 titles and millions. Oh and I am relying also on a little thing called constitutional right. I can’t believe the condemnation of one gets for exercising their constitutional right.

Yeah BN cyber trooper eh? Just because I don’t jump on the bandwagon of condemning Michelle Yeoh. I am for once ashamed to be called Malaysian when I am faced by mindless hate by everyone who feels it is hip and chic to blame anyone for supporting the party they support. Very “classy” bunch of people.

      3. @ Nurul, Funn Lim comment is a fair comment & I disagree with you that she is a BN cybertrooper……if you have been visiting this site frequently you would hv noticed Funn Lim is regular contributor to the comments column. (Her new avatar though is not as hot as the old one…I.e. the Wonder Woman pic.)

    2. FunnLim, the issue is not about supporting who. It is about how we Chinese in Msia are being oppressed. Should we as Chinese stand together as we are being treated as a pendatang. She may not feel it because she does not stay in Msia long enough to feel it. BTW, is she still a Msian citizen???

      1. Great! Want to make a difference? Have more children. Otherwise, stop complaining about being oppressed.

You know the solution, so go do something about it. 28% of the voting population trying to overturn a result? Yeah, well done and good luck

      2. @ Rambling Mind

FYI, I have Malay friends who are angry with the exPM who encouraged the Malays to have more children for the purpose of increasing their numbers. Their folks back then trust the govt and they face financial difficulty to get food on the table to feed all the children. Those that are not connected are the one who suffers.

Do you think we Chinese votes alone can change the govt?

For those who are living in the comfortable zone, due to inheritance or MBF (MamaPapaFinance) do not feel the pitch of those be it Chinese or Malay or Indians who struggle to what they are.

      3. “…the exPM who encouraged the Malays to have more children for the purpose of increasing their numbers. Their folks back then trust the govt and they face financial difficulty to get food on the table to feed all the children.”

Oh dear. Look at what happened to Romania when Nicolae Ceausescu was around. Even to this very day, there are tonnes of homeless children wandering the streets and living in adverse conditions – even living in manholes. I was watching a documentary on this issue and it was heartbreaking seeing an interview of these parents who abandoned their child at an orphanage, or scenes of children who had multiple slits on their wrists.

    3. I believe the Malaysian people recognizes Michelle’s right to support any party she wants, in fact the people welcomed her to the Malaysian political arena. Since her involvement in politics has great impact in the people’s lives and destiny, the people have the right to scrutinize her as a public figure. For a start, the people will initiate an investigation into her family’s involvement in government’s projects and whether the prices of those projects are highly inflated (read corruption). We hope Michelle will give more political speeches in malaysia and better still we can arrange for her to debate any time on any topics she so wishes. Don’t worry Michelle, we will not arrange for economic or social experts to debate with you instead we will get someone who is of your level of intelligence so as not to embarrass you

      1. Well said, Lin! Hope Michelle Yeoh (or her assistant) is reading this! 😀

    4. I’m sick of you trying to be “fair” and “neutral”. Michelle Yeoh is out of touch with reality. She was born into a rich family. She cannot relate herself to ordinary people like us, much like that plasticky Gwyneth Paltrow. Being a role model to Malaysians because of her successes in the international arena, she should have known better than to side with a government that is openly corrupted and biased. Her open support for Najib goes to show how protected she is of her riches and her lifestyle. Obviously the Yeoh family will stand to lose a lot with the downfall of BN.

      1. You are right lawnaek. Michelle Yeoh is out of touch with realty. Brought up with silver spoon in her mouth, what does she know about poverty and suffering? Spent most of her adult life out of the country mixing and marrying rich too. Wonder if she still know how to dance ballet? Btw, she is a ballerina too besides acting. She shouldn’t have made public her political preference but obviously she has no choice because her whole family is indebted to the government
and she has to be seen supporting it.

    5. Funn, what you have said is exactly right. You have my support!

  10. Jayne pls remove this comment. I wrote the translation but was blocked since the contents is beyond offensive. I believe this is against the spirit of this website and very un-Malaysian for their bullying tactics and vulgar vocabulary in calling one of the fellow countrymen with such offensive words. You attack her politics and her views, not her person.

    1. why remove this comment,I bet you are Mca supporter or perkasa supporter ,altantunya only want for justice ,just like me.long live Pakatan.

      1. @ TBH, As I glanced briefly earlier, Altantuya’s piece (in malay) was laced with profanities which is frown upon by everyone here, I believe. Express your disgust @MY if you must, but don’t support Altantuya comment blindly….

      2. They’re prolly the same person using a different moniker.

    2. Teoh beng hock ? Now you’re being insensitive! No wonder Malaysians get laughed at. Shameful behaviour.

    1. Boycott that milk powder brand too, give the company pressure. Just like that brand of bread.

  11. Actress is alwiz an actress – alwiz can be bought by money……………

  12. idiot actress with no quality. i slammed her for supporting that corrupted idiot.

  13. I boycott all her movie. Shame on her being a traitor toward the Chinese community. Cant blame her, she did indeed get a lot of benefit by betraying the Chinese Community.

  14. Shame on you for stating these offensive and defamatory remarks. Your remarks are not only tarnishing Malaysia, but also tarnishing PR’s image. What different are you than UMNO lawlords who constantly spew lies and hatred towards the opposition when you yourself is doing the same?

  15. *Checks google translate*

    Do ho ho~
You Malays are preeeetty intense, yo.

    1. Malays or Malaysians? Makes a huge difference. No, not intense at all. Shamefully must admit, with people like Altantunya and the likes, not intense but rather petty.

      1. I don’t know, is there a difference? Which term am I supposed to be using?

      2. It is however an innocent mistake. Whenever I am abroad, a definite comment that will be made is “You are a Malay…” because of course some can’t see the difference between Malay and Malaysian. Like I said, an innocent mistake.

  16. As a fellow Malaysian Chinese who’s a strong supporter of the opposition, I understand the hardships we have gone through. Though Michelle doesn’t have the same mindset as us in terms of politics, that doesn’t justify all the hate, defamatory and offensive remarks towards her. After all, it’s her fundamental right as a citizen to exercise her political rights. We condemn politicians who constantly spew lies and racist remarks towards the minority, but aren’t we doing the same thing towards Michelle with all the hate and defamatory remarks? Think about it.

    1. I agree, more so some hate goes toward character of a person which is unjust and in fact unkind.

      1. I absolutely agree. This pre-election fever has caused many to lose their rationale and sanity. And i mean in both the BN and Pakatan coalition.

      2. Agreed. Unfortunately, the current election has caused many people to go to the extreme. Its a case of ‘either you are with us or you are against us’..jeeez..

    2. Actually, most people carry out such dualistic.
” either/or ” thought style even in their every day lives without even knowing it. Consciously or subconsciously we are making judgements like that all time. . its either liberal or conservative, good or bad, black or white etc.

So when somebody like Michelle chooses ‘differently’, this sort of binary thinking, which is neurotic by nature, starts to categorize her as this or that.

      1. It’s okay to disagree, it’s alright to categorize, but never radical, never to the extreme. We should all use our rationale not just in terms of which political party to vote for, but also in our daily decisions. It’s disappointing to see so many Malaysians being so overcome with emotions that they fail to use their rationale.

      2. Yup, if more of us would agree to disagree, it would be a better place for everyone. Unfortunately, thoughts and emotions are very powerful driving forces that can defeat rationale. Thoughts can propel emotions and behaviors that are extremely destructive.

  17. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa…introduced Isabella Leong to that ugly, old and rich dude despite the ages differences??
Don’t know what to make of that…haha…LOL..

    1. Obviously Michelle Yeoh has a side job as a mamasan, much like that pimp Eric Tsang.

  18. My Oh My..this side infested by Crows.

    Cyber Bullies go away

    1. Oh yes, BERSIH. You mean the PEACEFUL rally at Dataran Merdeka where apparently the Opposition leaders did not tell supporters to break the barriers and thus cause the police to retaliate?

Yes, I’m sure the police were most definitely at fault that day (sarcasm intended).

  19. wonder if she’s afraid to rock the boat?
vote against Najib means going against her parents(esp her dad)
we may never know the truth

  20. wonder if she’s afraid 2 rock the boat?
vote against Najib means going against her parents(esp her dad)

  21. I was once regarded her as Malaysian heroes but no longer anymore. I wondered why she blinded herself of all the corrupt, misused of power and bullied on their people by current government in power. Shame on her.

  22. Honestly, I’m a chinese Malaysian from a low to medium income family.. I personally think malaysia is so much better country compare to some other.. I have not feel any hardship in the country and I see lots of new investment around Johor area.. Petrol is expensive but we have the cheapest oil in south east Asia, housing price went up but it show the country is growing. Hmmm…. The only thing I’m not happy is lynas.. No lynas!!

    1. Knn, please go to malaysiakini.com. Do you know the figure for our country deficit? Do you know Msian kid are born with debt and is increasing yearly.

Petrol!!! – make comparison with apple to apple. How much petrol in OIL PRODUCING COUNTRY like us?

The gap of our cost of living to standard of living is huge and widening.

Please take more concern of the country economy and you will understand.

      1. Not only M’sian kids are born with debt, so, do the kids in the modern, developed, ‘fair’ US. US also owe the world bank a lot of money. Lots of European countries are facing financial problem with some going bankrupt already. The world economy is bad all around. Many countries also suffered financially.

Secondly, what is the credentials of PR? Can they revive the economy? What is their economic plan?

      2. No party can overnight turn around a country that has been destroy for 56 years. But what we know a change in the management to betterment of the country. Get real.

      3. BTW, we must follow countries that are better than us to progress. Don’t you agreed, my dear.

      4. @leng,
“a change in the management to betterment of the country”

Hmm this may not necessarily be true. We’ve got some high profile change of management in the Middle East but things aren’t getting better.

      5. @Siying

56 years and where are we, debts mounting high. His own people announced that Msian will be bankrupt before 2020.

We have a 50/50 chance for a Change. Rather than wait until our country goes bankrupt.

Now Msia is under 1 Hand who do as he likes. With a change, we have 3 parties to monitor. And do not forget we the party who master of corruption to be our watchdog over the new govt.

      6. @leng,
Well yes, I guess 50/50 is better than nothing.

Sometimes when a ruling party that has been around for too long chalked up too many problems, even the new govt may not be able to rectify those problems even if given time. Like in the case of Egypt.

I’ve only visited M’sia as a tourist so I don’t know how the locals are really living. However, I do wish the best for you and your fellow M’sians.

      7. @Siying

Thank you for your wish to Malaysians. We needed it badly. Calling the world to pray together with us for divine intervention to grand us A CHANGE.

FYI, the govt has brought in foreigners by charter planes to vote. What will happen to our country flooded with foreigners. Sad.

But we have high hope for change. Yes together we can do it with Heavenly God.

        Overseas vote results:-
        PR – our new Govt
        Melbourne – PR 69.5% BN 3.9%
        Perth – PR 77.4% BN 3.7%
        London – PR 71% BN 3.7%
        The rest is void vote

      8. @leng,

You are most welcome. Yes you are right, with God Almighty all things are possible.

      9. Wow foreigners brought in by charter planes to vote?! Unbelievable.

      10. are we not in debt because of the current govt? am sure we were not in debt when we got our independence

  23. I totally agree in the spirit of democracy, one has all the freedom and right to lend her support to any political party. But as public figure, she shld have better sense than to urge the public to lend support to the party which has brutalized the people on a peaceful demonstration for fair election. Fame comes with responsibility.
Those of you who does not understand the anger among the comments by Malaysians, the anger is tracked back to decades of the deprivation. Deprivation not just in wealth or material. Deprivation of fairness and justice. As of the past decade, deprivation of sense of security; crimes.
In similar context, when Jacky Chan openly made remarks to show his support on policy by central administration, he invited the wrath of many Hong Kong people. Only those directly impacted will comprehend the hard time…..

    1. As someone commented on Vivian Yeoh’s Jayne article earlier, MY is Malaysia’s Jacky Chan equivalent ….how true indeed!

      1. Thank you KM & Ross for your understanding.

    2. Again, as another Malaysian Chinese, I really fail to see how the Chinese have been deprived considering that the Chinese have the largest portion of the middle class.

I like your use of the words “decades of depravation”. If there indeed have been decades of depravation, then logically, one would surmise that you would have had 12 previous chances to rectify the situation.

Unless of course, you mean your parents and grandparents were less enlightened than you? Or that they didn’t know what was going on?

      1. Your dedication in responding every other posting to suggest giving birth to bigger broods, stop being whiners and all ruling governments play dirty politics Ian truly amazing. If every Malaysian thinks like you, Malaysia will be the best place on earth.

I am not 60 so I didn’t had 5 times to make changes. Ever spoken to old folks?.They witnessed and gone through the racial unrest of May 13. My grandmother still get worried whenever election dates draw near. We will never be able to imagine the trauma. So pleasedo not

      2. Please do not attempt to ridicule the older generations struggle.

If you have not scared 5As in STPM yet DEPRIVED your right to study medicine in UM, I fully comprehend your lack of apprehension of my choice of word.

      3. Ridicule the struggle of the older generations? Hardly. I’m in fact ridiculing every whiner about how the ruling govt has deprived us, how Michelle Yeoh is a traitor (BUT I must have my rights to speak).

You want democracy and yet in the same breath you ridicule people who do not share the same opinion. Is this democracy? Oh yes, you have the right to ridicule her, but you are hiding behind a facade on the internet, in the comfort of your own home.

Anyone can be an armchair critic. And my dedication (as you so eloquently put it) is directed at people who attempt to paint Malaysia in a negative light.

I am definitely not on the side of the ruling party, but I am definitely not on the side of people who choose to criticise someone else because of their choices. And obviously, the same people would have praised Michelle Yeoh if she went to an Opposition gathering and spoke in support?

      4. Like you, I don’t think opposition leaders are saint. I will absolutely won’t claim Malaysian Chinese comunity is treated fairly because we made up of the largest middle class ratio. Based on your argument, as long as Robert Kuok remains the richest man in Malaysia, we better thank god every night before we sleep?

Each and everyone of us witnessed or experienced ddifferent encounters in our lives. To you, people here are whining. But they may have gone through things which you think only happens in tvb drama.

Who doesn’t anyone want gte right to boast about their country? I was absolutely flabbergasted when fireugner n friends or encounters asked why Malaysia system is so corrupted. Praising (read laughing) at how easy they could get away from a summon for speeding etc. Like you, all of us would want to paint Malaysia as a clean place; both in conduct and environment. But can we?

I respect MY’s freedom to support any party. But to use her public figure status is different thing. How can you deny celebrity has no public influence? If so, y would charity show lines up all the who’s who in entertainment circle to give you a 15 second clips urging public to donate? That is social science fact, not imaginary hypothesis brainchild of any whiner here.

To you we just whine behind the silk screen of internet. We are no celebrities. You know of any journalist interested to write an article from anyone of us? Utusan? Berita Harian? The Star or The News Straits Times? You may be too young but I have gone through the 80s when everyday on national paper, pictures and news on who being detained under ISA. Without internet, I used to believe that is normal; that kind of arrest is acceptable. Will you be able to imagine the impact on that in my generation?

I still harbour hope albeit slim for a less corrupted Malaysia. Ultimately, let’s hope for a better future for Malaysia.

      5. You’ve made some fine points there. And you’re right, Malaysia’s system is broken, but hardly decrepit. To paraphrase a line from you, to wholly say that the govt has done NOTHING for the Chinese would be “ridicule the struggles of the previous generations”. They have done something, but that was in the past. Now all they do is take – so yes, in that sense, they should be punished.

Back to MY, so if Michelle Yeoh had gone to a PR function, would any of these cyberbullies and you have accused her of using her celebrity status to influence voters? Truly?

What I’m trying to get at here is that the door should swing both ways, not not just your way when it’s convenient. That is the essence of democracy – you may totally detest her politics but you have to defend her right to say it.

Maybe you get it – but so sorry, judging by the comments in here, not a whole lot of Malaysians do.

      6. From the very beginning, I respected MY’s freedom to support any politically party. My comment is she could exercise more care when urging public to lend support to ruling party who had so much bad reputation during the last term to avoid similar fate like JC.

I always believe actors and actresses should do what they do best; act and stay at that. I don’t even agree with the trend of those actors/actresses doubling up as singers; let alone politics. And in MY’s case, it is made worse for the fact that she does not reside in Malaysia to experience the situation here. So, to answer your question, no, I won’t applaud her action if the same took place in the opposition stage.

Let’s exercise the right of as a citizen and vote for the future generation. May there be better tomorrow for Malaysia.

  24. Seldom i see so many comments here. Anyway i never like her and after this incident, i beginning to dislike her. Please ask her don’t be traitor!!!

  25. I am not Malaysian so I do not know what is truly going on. Therefore, what did Michelle do that is so bad??? I still don’t get it. Can any Malaysians enlighten me??

    1. To HeTieShou, please go to malaysiakini.com. Thank you for your interest in Msian Chinese

    2. HTS, long story short, Michelle came out in support of the current ruling govt. Now the current ruling govt has been in power for 50-odd years and as all govts are apt to do when being in power this long, they engage in corrupt practices and do all sorts of funny sh!t (including marginalising the minority races).

So netizens (using the anonymity of the Internet) decided that she was being a traitor blah blah blah. And the same group of people are the ones who are crying out for democracy and the right to speak.

Now, would it not be fair to say that you are being hypocritical when you say you have the right to speak and yet deny or lambast other people when they speak just because their opinion do not match yours?

Of course, this bring the internet, intelligent discourse is far and few in between and these kinds of “discussions” usually end in flaming wars and trolling – which is precisely what’s happening in here.

      ‘Nuff said

  26. I wonder will the same scenario happens when LEE CHONG WEI shows his support to BN!
It’s ppls like above that got others felt disgusting about PR!
Proclaiming DEMOCRACY but lollll when ppls have other opinions got bashed so badly!
So? EVERYONE FROM PR are CLEAN?!
    NO CORRUPTION?!
Do more research before lolllll calling BN, “LEMBU” @ COW, then? What about u all?!

    1. He has indirectly done so by inviting only BN politicians to his wedding. I’m not sure if all from PR are clean, but at least they’ve secured confidence from the voters by their conduct. For instance, all Penang state EXCO need to have their assests publicly declared, while the politicians from BN has opposed strongly to the idea of doing so, and we all know why.

      1. Ishhh! U reminded me of Big Mama sitting in the middle between LCW and his wife xD

      2. @Yen,
ARe you Malaysian too? I never knew that…

      3. Just point out few that I came across
1.Azmin Ali – PKR. He owned a Ferrari. How much is his salary?!

        2. Kedah under PAS. Looses millions. Their replies – “Its investment! Investment doesn’t guarantee profits all the time. We made a mistake”
So?! Looses millions and YEAH – investment ma! not always can profit one!
If its BN – ahhh!! CORRUPTION!!!

3.Kelantan! I just dont know where to start with!
To summon salon for a Non-Muslim shampoo gal washing hair for a Non-Muslim male customer @@?!
And the most hilarious when Tv3 went over for their Jom Heboh event. It got to be separted into 3 sections! here is for MALE, here FEMALE and here for FAMILY @@!!!

      4. But surely I pray that PR will win over Selangor!!!
I’ve been staying here up to 3 years and hohohos my water bill is forever RM0.00 😉
Khalid Samad is the minister I really salute!!

  27. Wow….Looks like Ah Jib Gor chances not high…

Michelle is always BN one. But as long as she doesn’t support the porn star then ok lor.

She support Ah Jib Gor and Ah Jib Gor honestly has done a good job for our economy and giving us money.

    1. How good is the economy? All big investors ran off to other countries. And giving money? I only remember myself paying thousands of tax but receiving nothing.

    2. Done a good job for our economy? Our trade deficit is at an all time high. Instead of implementing fiscal policies to reduce the deficit, he’s giving out ‘last minute election goodies’ to the rakyat. Illegal deficit for Malaysia amounted to 285billion USD from 2001-2010. Where has our money gone to? Go figure

  28. IF Lee Chong Wei shows support for BN, our only so-called hope for uniting Malaysians will be condemned as well!
Some Malaysians are a big shame. It’s okay to support Pakatan or BN.
The biggest joke must be when someone is not in your page i.e. supporting PR and BN, he/she will be condemned to hell. Pity how Malaysians are thinking nowadays.
By the way, I am no cybertrooper and no BN supporter. We just need to analyze and use the brain rationally to think and to reason. And not simply hentam keromo as if you are so well-versed in politics.
Yeah come and condemn me as pro-BN cybertrooper, you moronic blindly supporters of PR. Only the hardcore will think that way and many are like that when they are too anti the government.
Food for thought, Anwar was once the donkey causing the Chinese all of this sufferings too. Now you all embrace him as the future PM because he has ‘repented’. How demented you are? Yeah once again, grill and curse for being a pro-BN fella. Use your brain lar! Jangan kerana orang tak sama pendapat, kamu semua condemn macam orang hilang akal lar!
    P/S : I am a BN cybertroopy? Puihhhh..Pakai otak lar!

    1. It is ok to show your support if your support for the party is justified. But what justification do you have for supporting a party that has short changed us (maybe not you? A crony?) for more than 50 years? Tell me!

  29. i’m a malaysian living in hk and yes most ppl here refers us as Ma-lais (“Malays”)

  30. Because of the title “datuk” u sell ur pride. Of cos she support BN. She didn’t even know how malaysia country turns to. Corruption, unfair on education, crimes increased everyday! And now you so call beloved prime minister get so many bangala to vote for malaysia government!!which means invites more labor give them citizens, and for sure crime rate will increase. We the Malaysians who stay in malaysia suffering not like datuk yeoh can enjoy ur life at other countries!! *sry if I sounds harsh. But I can’t bear with it

    1. Probably she is aware that our current education system is a mess, eg. No more PMR exams & PPSMI, etc..all courtesy of BN, but she will act ignorant on these issues. She spend most of her time overseas & had no inkling the issues that are bothering most Malaysians….nobody has the right to stop MY from exercising her rights to vote & to choose the political party of her liking BUT DON’T EVER TRY TO CONVINCE OTHERS TO FOLLOW SUIT….That goes to LCW as well…

  31. Used to have great respect for her. She has flushed it all down the toilet. How can she not see what BN has done to the country? How can she betray her own country for money??!! From now on, I will not watch anything with her in it. Period.

    1. Well said @ Tmlin, I was looking forward to see her coming movie …’food recipe’ or something….NOW WE ALL GOING TO GIVE IT A MISS!

    2. She didn’t betray her own country. She just have a different opinion from you.

Betraying own country is giving government’s/country’s secret to rival countries. Supporting a party she prefers and voicing her support out is NOT betraying her country.

      1. If anything, she’s supporting the country by siding with its leaders.

        Do ho ho~

      2. She is a Malaysian of chinese descendent and yet she supports a party that regards chinese as second class citizens is NOT a betrayal?? Are you even in your right mind?

      3. Including making secret deals with the CIA just so you can take over the leadership mantle. Oooopppppsssss…. wasn’t supposed to say that.

  32. If Michelle Yeoh, being a public figure who has inspired and admired by many Malaysians, she should just shut the #$%@ up if she has nothing good to say. The backlash will not subside and will haunt her forever.

  33. In my opinion every voter in Malaysia has their own right in their preference of their future government. As a public figure one can support their own party but it would be best that one support in their mind but not publicly announced their preference. Malaysia is a good country with no major catastrophe and rich with its natural resources such as oil, rubber, mining, plantation, rice etc. But definitely there are unfairness towards other race. We hope the future of all Malaysians to be improved especially for the next generation..

  34. So, how many of you are going to vote on election day —- May 5th, right?

    1. have to go early to avoid phantom voters to steal your votes and make sure that ballot paper is clean without any dots, else the vote doesn’t count, go to http://pru13.gov.my/default.semakan.php, print out your voter confirmation slip and bring to polling center

  35. interesting articles on yahoo, type in ‘mahathir’s wealth, soros letter to mahathir, najib’s folly’, even ‘hishammudin drinking alchohol’ pic, just key in the above and click image, hishamuddin was all in for kartika sari dewi shukarno to be canned for drinking alcohol, also checked out

    1. on google map, many trees in malaysia’s jungle are chopped down in states ruled by the opp group, everybody’s in politics for the money, nobody’s patriotic and non of them are God fearing men or women

  36. michelle yeoh read law and is an avid reader, but ahe only reads what she likes to read, she is nowhere near reality

  37. My is creating her marriage news to avoid paparazzi to go after her about her political comment.

  38. Public figures mixing with politicians become targets for people taking potshots!
The course of true public figure never did run smooth,
For there is a fine frontier between being forthright and being foolish!

  39. As a Malaysian M. Yeoh has the liberty to vote for whichever party she famours. However, as a famous public figure she should not have made the stand for the Party of her choice. It was very unwise and undiplomatic on her part and now she’s really in hot soup! Stay well away from politics and religion, my dear girl.

  40. why should chinese ppl help the malays? more than 90 percent of malaysia total tax come from the chinese, yet the malays get discounts when purchasing houses, they can even buy super cheap bungalows and semi-detached houses built on malay reserved lands, their children go to universities local/abroad almost for free, even if they don’t pay back the education loans, nobody’s going after them cos people working in the govt dept are malays themselves, they get loans to start business, again nobody will go after them even if they fail, some sectors like selling of cars.. only the malays are allowed to have the permit, let’s say a chinese pays 27 percent of his income because he did well on that year, if the following years, he does not do well, he will pay less, there are no refunds or returns, just pay, pay, pay, people do pay income tax in japan but at least they will get pensions for life as well as a lump sum at the ripe age of 60

    1. @ Charity, you missed out the fact, that in reality, many Malays/bumiputras are not that well off…the only rich bumiputras are the Umnoputras & their cronies. So there is an imbalance here. Rich Malays do not need discounts to buy high end condos or bungalows. If BN ruling party start coming up with new policies to help the poor irrespective of races, stop dipping their greedy hands into govt coffers, stop giving more ‘fish’ instead of ‘fishing rods’ to the Malaysians like all the 1M plans…, stop enriching their cronies, stop the need to grease the hands of govt officials to do biznes & undertake big/small projects ……The Pakatan (opposition alliance) would not have been formed….

      1. *The Pakatan (opposition alliance) would not have been formed into a formidable foe to BN.

      2. Ever since casting off rose-tinted glasses a long time ago,
The light that our government had shown is clearer!
The tendency to divide populace into 1st and 2nd class citizens,
Even within the same race and religion!

    2. so clever, why don’t barisan nasional help the poor malays from their own pocket instead of getting money from other races through taxes and then announce, “kerajaan boleh kasi”/ “government can give”? have you read budget 2013? companies listed under the tun razak exchange gets tax exemption for 10 years!! most of the companies listed in the tun razak exchange belongs to…

    3. i feel cheated, after paying for housing and food etc, i have no mney left for my own children’s education, let alone for my old age, why should i be paying for other people’s children (malays esp) whom i do not know to enjoy my hard earned money, my bones ache from working and i am having asthma, on top of that the malays treat us like dirt, slandering us, telling the voters that the chinese are killing the malays?? pay, pay, pay.. in the end get nothing, no pension??

      1. I have issue with the words “Chinese tsunami”, again placing the blame on the Chinese. The commentaries have so far stoked more racial disharmony than any reports I see and that is unfair and dangerous. But on a side note, I am thankful we are not welfare state like Britain or those bankrupt nations.

    4. it’s true that rich malays in malaysia do not need discounts to buy houses but they are getting it, their children are even getting scholarships to study abroad, placing monies in certain banks/funds which gives interest as high as 13 percent, lots of bis only reserved for the malays like selling of cars in malaysia, lots of lands reserved just for them, the list goes on

  41. Not the best place to ask, but are there any sites with live updates of the election results in English?

      1. Thanks! Singapore’s mainstream media still reporting 27:9 instead of 27:17.

  42. pr0stitutes go where the money is..
its natural pls don’t be so worked up.

political parties are advertisers – so they will need marketeers, puppeteers and prostitutes.

he who has the money wins.

    hands down

  43. I am a british born chinese, last month i went to malaysia for a holiday and noticed when paying entrance that their for a price for non malaysian or malaysian.
i found that quite pathetic, what is the difference we are all people why is there a difference in charge???!!!
Why is there no race equality? thought everyone should be treated fairly no matter what gender , race or disability?
