Next Stop for Michelle Yeoh? The Oscars

Since finding fame in Asia, Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) has successfully made a name for herself in Hollywood in recent years. Making history with her Best Actress wins at the 94th National Board of Review Awards and Golden Globes for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. She is also a hot favorite to win Best Actress at the Oscars.

She has starred in many classic movies including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Lady, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Star Trek.  Michelle emotionally expressed that she had waited 40 years, and will not be letting go of her award. “It’s been an amazing journey and incredible fight to be here today, but I think it’s been worth it. When I first came to Hollywood, it was a dream come true until I got here, because look at this face. I came here and was told, “You’re a minority,” and I’m like, “No, that’s not possible.” And then someone said to me, “You speak English!” I mean, forget about them not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India. Then I said, ‘Yeah, the flight here was about 13 hours long so I learned.’

“I turned 60 last year, and I think all of you women understand this. As the days, the years, and the [age] get bigger, it seems like opportunities start to get smaller as well. It was probably at a time when I thought, “Well, come on girl, you’ve had a really, really good run. You worked with some of the best people: Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and Danny Boyle, so it’s good. It’s all good.” Then along came the best gift: Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Halfway through her speech, piano music started to play to try cue her off the stage and she joked, “Shut up, please. I can beat you up, okay? And that’s serious.” She finished off her speech by thanking directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. She added, “I was given this gift of playing this woman who resonated so deeply with so many people because, at the end of the day, in whatever universe she was at, she was fighting for love and her family.”

Everything Everywhere All at Once grossed $100 million worldwide at the box office. It has been a fruitful year for Michelle, she was chosen as the 2022 Icon of the Year by Times Magazine. As her career rises to new heights, she has garnered many new young fans and she feels very happy when young people come up to her and ask for photos.
