Godfrey Gao’s “Hello Gorgeous” Showcases Fashion Industry Intrigue

Last week, mainland Chinese drama Hello Gorgeous <華麗一族> began airing on Hunan Satellite Television and drew in extremely high ratings. Praised for its intense plot and eye-catching fashion, Hello Gorgeous stars Shera Li (李欣汝) and model-turned-actors Godfrey Gao (高以翔) and Jed Lee (李學慶). With much of the supporting female cast featuring real-life supermodels, Hello Gorgeous offers viewers a realistic glimpse into the internal strife that runs rampant in the modern fashion industry, as well as an entertaining and nerve-wracking story of love and revenge.

Based on the 1997 Korean drama Model <모델>, Hello Gorgeous tells the story of Song Jiaoyang (Shera Li), a fashion design student who accidentally becomes a supermodel herself. As she learns the ropes of the modeling industry, she meets Li Zhen (Godfrey Gao), who is seeking revenge against his uncle. Li Zhen recently returned from school abroad and planned to work for his family’s company, only to find that his father had died and that his uncle is refusing to acknowledge his nephew as the true heir. The family dispute destroys Li Zhen’s kindness, and he becomes willing to use any means in his quest for vengeance, even going so far as to exploit his relationship with Jiaoyang and cause her harm.

The interwoven plotlines of love and revenge extend throughout the rest of Hello Gorgeous, especially when it comes to the fierce competition within the fashion and modeling industry. However, the catwalk is not characterized by catfights; rather, the designers and supermodels discreetly undermine and frame their rivals. Even the two big fashion companies are locked in continual strife, repeatedly exchanging low-handed tricks in order to gain the upper hand.

After the success of period dramas like The Legend of Zhen Huan <後宮甄嬛傳> and Schemes of a Beauty <美人心計>, it is perhaps no surprise that viewers’ interest has been piqued by this new fashion drama. The rivalry hidden behind the fashion stage is eerily similar to the palace intrigue in The Legend of Zhen Huan and Schemes of a Beauty, leading some viewers to see Hello Gorgeous as a modern version of the palace intrigue drama. What sort of sacrifices Jiaoyang and Li Zhen must make to rise above their peers, and whether these sacrifices will be worth it, remains to be seen.

  1. The sypnosis reminded me of Kdrama ‘Model’

    1. Sehseh,
“Hello Gorgeous” is based on “Model”. Godfrey Gao is truly gorgeous in the clip.

      1. I don’t find him gorgeous 🙁 boring face, he has good jaw line, I guess good for taking portrait picture, maybe, but he doesn’t attract me, the beard is bad, even just talking scenes I found he is weak in acting, the models are not great looking either 🙁 and as soon as I read ‘doing a model series, I was like dont tell me you guys copy kdrama famous model series >_> turn out, they did

      2. I know, whoever he is, he is one good looking asian. hhaha lol

  2. I will be watching “City of Bones” just for Godfrey Gao.

  3. Someone should write a screenplay based on the backstage intrigues of the Bolshoi Ballet.

  4. Even the trailer seems hard to shallow, I don’t find any of them are good looking, the clothes/fashion is boring and underwhelming. I like the slapping scenes, wish I was the one doing the slapping as I get frustrated just seeing the trailer, don’t even feel a bit of interest in watching it (trying to finish the trailer was a hard job)
The main actor is seriously seem weak in acting, and if this show is about model, they need to do better on the fashion, the clothes, the styling. And the main actress’s hairstyle is bleh 🙁 style a bit nicer would be better, she’s too white, and with that not red not orange hair colour (faded, dead looking colour instead of real vibrant with highlight) she just look awful, and she need to highlight her browns, looks like she got none half of the time. And if they were models, they should take care of their hair, some one them die their hair to the point of dried out and dead looking

  5. Hmmm, don’t think it show cases fashion, like the baggy black top.
