Zheng Shuang and Ma Tianyu to Star in TV Drama “Beauty Supper Club”
Mainland Chinese actress Zheng Shuang (鄭爽) will star in Beauty Supper Club <美人私房菜>, her first leading role in a period drama after she admitted last year to undergoing plastic surgery.
Since Zheng Shuang’s debut in the 2009 idol drama, Let’s Watch the Meteor Shower Together <一起來看流星雨>, which she filmed at just 18 years of age, she has epitomized the image of freshness and purity. In 2011, she appeared alongside Deng Chao (鄧超) and Betty Sun (孫儷) in Mural <畫壁>, in which she once again won over viewers with her sweet nature.
Thanks to her previous roles, the producers of Beauty Supper Club felt Zheng Shuang was the perfect choice to portray Song Yudie, the youthful and sweet female lead. Yudie is a talented chef whose skills are renowned in all of Hangzhou. Despite going through setbacks in her career and love life, she maintains a love for the world and for her country.
According to Zheng Shuang, she regularly cooks in real life and enjoys studying the culinary arts. In order to depict Yudie accurately, however, she went through much effort to perfect her own knife-cutting and cooking skills. She also sought out information regarding the various gourmet recipes introduced in the drama.
Recently, Beauty Supper Club released stills of Zheng Shuang in costume. Netizens praised her for her graceful demeanor, whether she was clothed in the brightly colored everyday garb of the Song Dynasty or dressed in the luxuriant uniform of a government official. The costumes were designed by Zhong Jiani (鐘佳妮), who worked as a costume designer for Schemes of a Beauty <美人心計> and The Last Supper <王的盛宴>.
Directed by Liang Xinquan (梁辛全), who previously helmed Qing Shi Huangfei <傾世皇妃>, Beauty Supper Club will also feature Ma Tianyu (馬天宇) and Steven Jiang (蔣毅). The drama, which is based on a Xihu folktale, has also incited comparisons to Dae Jang Geum, a 2003 Korean drama about a lowly kitchen cook who became the first female physician in the king’s court.
