How the Candidates Were Selected

JayneStars.com’s 3-member Nomination Committee thoroughly reviewed the qualifying candidates for each awards category to ensure the highest quality Top 10 nominees. Many thanks to Kidd and Funn for their extensive help in compiling the nomination lists and photos!

NOTEBottled Passion and When Heaven Burns were already included in our “2011 Best of TVB Awards” poll last year, so they were not included in our 2012 poll. Since Sergeant Tabloid has not been aired in Hong Kong yet, the series was not included in our 2012 poll.

    1. Funn Lim says:

In case anyone is wondering, Bottled Passion was in the 2011 poll.

      • Jayne says:

        Funn,
Bottled Passion swept the awards categories this year.

Wonder if our results will primarily be between “The Hippocratic Crush” and “The Confidant”??

        • Funn Lim says:

Probably The Confidant for some main categories whilst couple stuff, probably Hippocratic crush.

    2. Veejay says:

      @Jayne,

Should replace Kenneth’s pic with hair on! lol…

      • Jayne says:

        Veejay,
Kenneth looks cooler in his “Tiger Cubs” mugshot than his “The Hippocratic Crush” profile pic! Seriously!

        • sandcherry says:

Kenneth was nominated in “The Hippocratic Crush” as Best Actor, and not in “Tiger Cubs”. He was only a guest star in “Tiger Cubs”. Agree with Veejay that Kenneth Ma should have his profile picture in “The Hippocratic Crush”.

        • Jayne says:

          Sandcherry,
Kenneth Ma appears as “Dr. Cheung” in the “Best Actor” category. I just used his “Tiger Cubs” photo in our awards header photo because I personally found it to be more attractive.

        • pop says:

agree with Jayne! he looks cool!

    3. Addy says:

      Oh, YAY!!! I voted :)

I don’t know if I’m the only one who has this idea, but I thought it would be cool to include “Best Cast” as a category as well. I think there are many dramas out there that isn’t necessarily the best when it comes to overall performance, but it is the chemistry and the great dynamics of its cast that makes the drama “watchable” if you will.

For example, I really enjoyed the chemistry between Ruco Chan, Louis Yuen, and Kiu Bobo in “No Good Either Way”, and also Michael Miu, Derek Kok, Law Lok-lam, and Jazz Lam in “Highs and Lows”, but I would not vote these dramas for Best Drama lol. The Chung family in “Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles” and the The Five Eunuchs of “The Confidant” are also getting a lot of press coverage for their great chemistry in their respective dramas.

      • Jayne says:

        Addy,
The collective acting talent of the entire cast is one of the determining factors for Best Series. Best Onscreen Couple is singled out since the main romantic couple takes up so much screen time.

      • Rachel says:

i actually think that’s a pretty good ideas! yes i do agree with jayne in which the cast is a factor for best series, but best series also have other factors such as the script, plot line, etc.
and sometimes it’s not the actors’ fault if they get a sucky script that would make them less qualified for ‘best series’ but there are many series where the chemistry between the cast members is really awesome yet their series are under-recognized

      • Kidd says:

I think the Best Ensemble Award is a good idea too. TVB has this award once I remember. The original 4 Leaf Clover guys got it.

Jayne, maybe we can have it next year. If not enough candidates for 10 nominees, we can got for 5 nominees.

        • Funn Lim says:

Ensemble as in ensemble in a series? Isn’t this contradictory to say best series but not the best ensemble and best ensemble but not best series?

        • Abigail says:

I think Best Series is a combination of great script, great theme, great ending, great enjoyable factor, great ensemble, and so on.

        • miriamfanz says:

But I have a feeling ppl will vote for Best Series and Best Ensemble in the same way

        • Kidd says:

Make it ‘Best Non-Romantic Chemistry Among Cast Award’ then. :D

        • Funn Lim says:

Too general? There can be best ensemble, like the one by Actor’s guild or something. But I feel best series would encompass all that.

It could be possible though, imagine SSSS with best ensemble and some other series as best series.

    4. AC says:

Good job putting together the poll!

Just curious, why is it one vote per day instead of just one vote in general?

    5. 伟杰 says:

      怎样投?

      • Jayne says:

        伟杰,
        選擇獎項類別,然後按投票

        • sandcherry says:

          Jayne:
You seem to understand Chinese. Can you read and write? Were you born in the States? If you were, you must be great. It is not easy to learn to read and write Chinese.

        • Jayne says:

          Sandcherry,
Chinese is my first spoken language, but I was illiterate for many years since grew up in USA.

It was my strong interest in TVB stars that motivated me to learn how to read Chinese. Family help and one year of college study only. But my Chinese writing skills are pretty basic.

        • sandcherry says:

          Jayne:
Your parents must be very proud of you. It is not easy to read and especially to write Chinese.

I have lived in Canada for a long time, and I forget how to write a lot of Chinese characters. I still can read though.

    6. Funn Lim says:

      VOTE! VOTE!!

I am not sure how I will vote for the other categories BUT for themesong, my only choice, the romantic gorgeously beautifully sung theme song for Last Steep Ascent. Everything else pales!

    7. Lucia says:

Thanks Funn, Kidd, and Jayne for this poll!! :) :) :)

    8. miriamfanz says:

Good job with the nominations list. Much, much better than TVB’s joke of a list. Great to see artists that were ignored by TVB recognized here. I wonder how the results will compare to TVB’s results.

While you’re at it, also vote in 9 fun categories here: http://casualtvb.blogspot.ca/p/casual-tvb-awards-2012.html

    9. miriamfanz says:

Just a thought, in light of all the poor endings by TVB recently, why not a Best Ending Award next year

    10. song says:

wonder whatever happened to bosco’s career? did myolie kill it?

    11. Nicole says:

So many categories yet we are supposed to vote everyday??? Why not just one vote per person..

    12. Woot says:

Hmm, why can a person vote more than once in every category, once every 24 hours? Isn’t it one person, one vote? And it should be just a string of categories to vote for instead of one by one on its own?

      • Jayne says:

        Woot, Nicole,
Similar to our other polls, which allow one vote per 24 hours, voters can vote for more than one nominee if they like.

If we were to lump all the awards categories into one page (instead of splitting it into 10 categories), the page is harder to navigate due to the long list of nominees. Also, not every reader is interested in voting for every category, so splitting it into different pages allows for simpler voting.

        • Nicole says:

          Jayne,
Last year, the poll for TVB awards was one vote per person, and not one vote per 24 hours.
Allowing multiple votes, just shows how “diligent” some fans are.

        • Jayne says:

          Nicole,
“Diligent” fans will find a way. Limiting to Facebook authorization last year (to one vote per person) barred many voters from participating in the poll.

We had a lengthy discussion last year about the flaws of online polls and diligent fans will find ways to overcome those limits anyway.

Our poll is meant for fans to enjoy (just like the Sexiest polls) and a form of appreciation/expression of who they like.

        • Kidd says:

If the actor has many diligent fans that are willing to vote every 24 hours without a miss, more power to him/her. His/her fans deserve to see their idol win.

        • Woot says:

          Thanks, Jayne.

I understand the circumstances. My only concern is on the multiple voting ability per 24 hours. I know diligent fans will find their way, so more reason to make it less easy for them to do so. I guess, we can all only hope that fans will be fair enough to vote only ONE nominee per category.

    13. xyz says:

It’s a pity that the TVB Award results, like the AOD Award results, will be determined by the more enthusiastic and ICT-savvy Y generation who may not appreciate the acting skills and talents of the veteran actors and actresses.

    14. CHOI1991 says:

I think if Myolie And Kenneth win, it would be great and amazing. since they have a great chemistry as couple and they has a drama for next year.

    15. Huh says:

Boy oh boy this is gonna be hard for all the wrong reasons…

    16. abc says:

kate kate kate dont put so much pressure on yourself. :(

    17. Funn Lim says:

Just a tiny complain. I find it a chore to click on each link and then vote. Would have been better if all the list in one page and just vote vote and then submit.

      • Kidd says:

Just right-click and open a new page/tab. then, you don’t need to go back to click a new link after every vote. I prefer separate link because I can vote the polls at different time.

    18. Kidd says:

Just notice that the nominee pictures in smaller ‘2012 Best of TVB Awards’ banner on the top right are all doctors.

      Nice touch, Jayne. :D

    19. sandcherry says:

      Jayne:

Why did you nominate Nancy Wu as Best Supporting Actress in “The Confidant”? I think she should be nominated in “Gloves Come Off”. Her role was more impressive and heavier in that drama series. Agree that Nancy also did well in “The Confidant”, but her role was not that heavy and had less screen time.
