Liza Wang Comments on HK Protests: “Stop the Violence”
On August 12, demonstrations against police brutality were held at the Hong Kong International Airport, prompting the airport to cancel all scheduled flights that afternoon in attempts to control congestion and traffic. Though the airport was reopened the following day, protests continued. Check-ins that afternoon were canceled as a result.
As for Hong Kong’s entertainment industry, reactions toward the protest were mixed. While some celebrities have already picked their sides, others have chosen to stay on the side of peace. The Hong Kong “Cultural Harmony” group released a statement to urge all Hong Kong citizens to stop the violence, to protect the heart of Hong Kong’s value, and to respect the law. Celebrities such as actress Liza Wang (汪明荃), director Clifton Ko (高志深) and former singer Cally Kwong (鄺美雲) have signed the statement.
On August 15th, on the set of Liza’s TVB variety program Liza’s Online <娛樂大家>, the veteran artist expressed her thoughts about the protest to reporters. She urged protestors to stop their besiegement of the airport, saying, “The protests have been going on for two months now. I don’t know why suddenly some of it got violent. It’s been a long time now, and many industries are affected by it, especially with what happened at the airport a few days ago. It has become very serious. About 200,000 people are in that airport every single day—some traveling, some seeing family, and even some going to see the doctor. A lot of people are being impacted. Some of [the protests] turned violent in the end, and some other things are added to that. I think it’s about time to stop.”
Liza, however, wasn’t trying to say that the protesters should give up. She clarified, “I think not only Hong Kong, but the world are hearing the voices by the youths. However, we have to slow down and think about this. Should we really continue on like this? Will this lead to a good outcome for everyone? When you’re trying to fight for something, think about how you should approach it first. Find a way where we can all discuss it and solve the problem together.”
She continued, “[Protestors] can travel to every district, every street, and every alley. They can go wherever the government allows. Hong Kong is built by people of all ages, myself included. Everyone has the freedom to express their thoughts. However, they also must keep into consideration the freedoms of other people, too. I do believe that the youth will understand. The educated mind has the knowledge and the understanding. You guys should know what to do.”

The point of the protestors is basically there is no true democracy under the 1 country 2 systems, China has been eroding what was promised bit by bit. In short, China can’t wait for 50 years to exert control.I don’t understand why the protestors must stop travelers from using the airport, makes no sense but other than that, the violence is from both sides. It’s a provocation and a reaction and the biggest failure is the HK govt who seems to have given up and depend on the riot police, who is at times ruled by emotions rather than cool logic and sense, the very group that is also aggravating the issues. Plus spies, paid triads and frustrated police and protestors, thus you have those violent encounters which aren’t really that violent. For most part, the protestors were annoying, though some group are radicals in their methods. Luckily nothing scream no turning back. I mean stop tossing flags!vChina won’t march in, they can’t. If they did, it’s the end for them. Famous celebs or influential people should urge the govt to talk to these people, China to allow Carrie Lam to step down and protestors must accept they are part of China. But China must honour the agreement of 50 years unchanged and not do those annoying stuff.
As for stars pledging for either China, HK or most sitting on the fence, i understand must protect rice bowl. But sometimes, you must make a stand.
As for robotic cowherd mentality that is Mainland chinese (netizens and all), they grew up not having the freedom to make certain choices or certain remarks so they may not know how HKers feel. They can imagine but they won’t. But to have them condemn anyone with the protestors or saying they are unpatriotic or traitor or whatever is plain stupidity. Against the govt is not against the country. Not loving the govt doesn’t mean not loving the country. In HK’s case, HK is such a unique place. You know it is HK once you are in HK. They are like China’s foreign educated golden child having studied in different international school, earning PHds elsewhere and suddenly they are told to go home to different rules and the parents agree ok for now be as you were but the parents didn’t follow their agreement and asserting all sorts of stuff thru maybe the tutor, etc,It is difficult to accept. It’s a difficult position. In time HK will be back to China and china will never let them go. Never.But I get Hk protestors’ demands. I feel the HK govt can meet those demands. But it seems HK govt has delegated the job of communicating with people to the riot police. What a mess.

Just because this man supported HK policemen (He’s got an “I love HK policemen” logo Tee) and stood the opposite position from those protesters, this reporter was tied up and beaten by hundreds of riots. What’s more, they frisked him and spread his passport information without any permission! What he said in this clip is: “I support HK policemen, you can beat me!” (Based on the previous experience that the riots had just beaten another guy to nearly dead and stopped the rescue teams from taking the victim to the ambulance car. They kept the victim staying at the airport for more than 4 hours!

@goodday Enough is enough! No one is above the law! These self-proclaimed peaceful protesters who block freeways ARE not protesters, they are considered rioters. The mobs blocked roads and highways with metal barriers, snips traffic light wires and then left one place for the other. Set up barricades to block off the area and defend it against police and disrupted public transport by holding train doors open on the city’s Mass Transit Railway. Imagine when an emergency occurs, (ambulance, fire department, private emergency etc so many possibilities you name it)? You just can’t get to the place, are they gonna take responsibility for it? @goodday Hong Kong police and the Hong Kong government and the Hong Kong court are too soft and treat the rioters and trouble makers and protesters like delicate babies, and even say sorry to the law breakers , even though the government is already way too lenient and too soft to the rioters. This gotta stop or someone will die. One of the idiotic rioters was seen holding a hand gun like object in his hand. In one of the confrontation, a bystander was beaten by the rioters, two men with cleavers rushed out to fight the rioters to save him. This is getting out of hand. In an interview, the kids are saying this is a lot of fun for them this summer, and it’s like playing Grand Theft Auto for real! This is not a protest any more! We need to make the organizers pay for the damage. To get a permit to protest, they should put up a bond or buy insurance. That would stop all protests that they can’t control.

I understand that the HK citizens are feeling helpless and that protests are their only resort to express their views but the percentage success rate would be minimal anyway whatever they do. It’s a lose/lose situation because of the financial impact it has caused and there will be nothing gained out of it as end result. The violence or ‘supposed violence’ caused by protesters will only provide China with a reason to interfere. Whatever rights that HK had could be even less if that happens.

It is clear from the tactics used by the rioters, they are well organized, equipped, planned and likely rehearsed. HK Police must find out who were financially supporting the riot organizers. The place to start looking are those tycoons who have most to lose if the extradition law passes. Unfortunately during the period when the British colonised Hong Kong, none of the Chinese there enjoyed any of the rule of law. The rule of law however in Britain has an extradition bill 2003.

@linda8765 just because they didnt have democracy in the past, it doesnt mean they cant fight for it now. Right now, HKers dont vote for their leader. The Chief Executive is chosen by a small committee/approved by China. HK has a legislature with democratically elected representatives (Legislative Council) which is where laws are passed. The Legislative Council has 70 seats. Within the 70 seats, they are either pro-democracy or pro-china. Although Pro-democracy has the popular vote, they occupy less than half of the seats in the Legislative Council because the system is set up so that when HKers vote, they’re only voting for 40/70 seats. 30 are chosen by business representatives – voted by corporations that have good relationships with China; mainly dominated by pro-china political parties. This means only 40 seats are directly electable by the majority of HKers.
How much should I pay u to get shot in the face, no sleep the whole night. Those support cops got pay and left in 30 minutes and they have mainland accent. No the us dont shoot like those communists inhumane police. U dont deserve to be the US, go back to China and recieve the death penalty
