Liza Wang Comments on HK Protests: “Stop the Violence”

On August 12, demonstrations against police brutality were held at the Hong Kong International Airport, prompting the airport to cancel all scheduled flights that afternoon in attempts to control congestion and traffic. Though the airport was reopened the following day, protests continued. Check-ins that afternoon were canceled as a result.

As for Hong Kong’s entertainment industry, reactions toward the protest were mixed. While some celebrities have already picked their sides, others have chosen to stay on the side of peace. The Hong Kong “Cultural Harmony” group released a statement to urge all Hong Kong citizens to stop the violence, to protect the heart of Hong Kong’s value, and to respect the law. Celebrities such as actress Liza Wang (汪明荃), director Clifton Ko (高志深) and former singer Cally Kwong (鄺美雲) have signed the statement.

On August 15th, on the set of Liza’s TVB variety program Liza’s Online <娛樂大家>, the veteran artist expressed her thoughts about the protest to reporters. She urged protestors to stop their besiegement of the airport, saying, “The protests have been going on for two months now. I don’t know why suddenly some of it got violent. It’s been a long time now, and many industries are affected by it, especially with what happened at the airport a few days ago. It has become very serious. About 200,000 people are in that airport every single day—some traveling, some seeing family, and even some going to see the doctor. A lot of people are being impacted. Some of [the protests] turned violent in the end, and some other things are added to that. I think it’s about time to stop.”

Liza, however, wasn’t trying to say that the protesters should give up. She clarified, “I think not only Hong Kong, but the world are hearing the voices by the youths. However, we have to slow down and think about this. Should we really continue on like this? Will this lead to a good outcome for everyone? When you’re trying to fight for something, think about how you should approach it first. Find a way where we can all discuss it and solve the problem together.”

She continued, “[Protestors] can travel to every district, every street, and every alley. They can go wherever the government allows. Hong Kong is built by people of all ages, myself included. Everyone has the freedom to express their thoughts. However, they also must keep into consideration the freedoms of other people, too. I do believe that the youth will understand. The educated mind has the knowledge and the understanding. You guys should know what to do.”

  1. The point of the protestors is basically there is no true democracy under the 1 country 2 systems, China has been eroding what was promised bit by bit. In short, China can’t wait for 50 years to exert control.I don’t understand why the protestors must stop travelers from using the airport, makes no sense but other than that, the violence is from both sides. It’s a provocation and a reaction and the biggest failure is the HK govt who seems to have given up and depend on the riot police, who is at times ruled by emotions rather than cool logic and sense, the very group that is also aggravating the issues. Plus spies, paid triads and frustrated police and protestors, thus you have those violent encounters which aren’t really that violent. For most part, the protestors were annoying, though some group are radicals in their methods. Luckily nothing scream no turning back. I mean stop tossing flags!vChina won’t march in, they can’t. If they did, it’s the end for them. Famous celebs or influential people should urge the govt to talk to these people, China to allow Carrie Lam to step down and protestors must accept they are part of China. But China must honour the agreement of 50 years unchanged and not do those annoying stuff.

As for stars pledging for either China, HK or most sitting on the fence, i understand must protect rice bowl. But sometimes, you must make a stand.

As for robotic cowherd mentality that is Mainland chinese (netizens and all), they grew up not having the freedom to make certain choices or certain remarks so they may not know how HKers feel. They can imagine but they won’t. But to have them condemn anyone with the protestors or saying they are unpatriotic or traitor or whatever is plain stupidity. Against the govt is not against the country. Not loving the govt doesn’t mean not loving the country. In HK’s case, HK is such a unique place. You know it is HK once you are in HK. They are like China’s foreign educated golden child having studied in different international school, earning PHds elsewhere and suddenly they are told to go home to different rules and the parents agree ok for now be as you were but the parents didn’t follow their agreement and asserting all sorts of stuff thru maybe the tutor, etc,It is difficult to accept. It’s a difficult position. In time HK will be back to China and china will never let them go. Never. But I get Hk protestors’ demands. I feel the HK govt can meet those demands. But it seems HK govt has delegated the job of communicating with people to the riot police. What a mess.

    1. @funnlim 100% agree with “against the government is not against the country”. A lot of HKers dont deny their Chinese identity. It’s just that HK & China’s government is different. People have different rights.

  2. @funnlim What is true democracy? Did HK people ever have democracy when the british colonised them? I mean you must really have identified with the slogans at cafes writing ‘dogs and chinese not allowed’. It resonated with the protestors so much that they were bearing the british flag. Haha.

If I was in HK, I would too go and get the cash and go and riot around the airport. Maybe become more prominent and get a green card to america. And should I ever protest in America in the way these people are rioting in HK, I would only dream of being hit by rubber bullets and tear gas.

    1. @linda8765 How much should I pay u to get shot in the face, no sleep many whole nights. Those support cops got pay and left in 30 minutes and they have mainland accent. No the us dont shoot like those communists inhumane police. U dont deserve to be in the US, go back to China and recieve the death penalty…look at communist killing their own people at the news from reliable source

      1. @goodday Shame on you and the pan-dems for defending these criminals! Those hooligans aren’t above the law! For the shameless pan-devils apologists for the rioters, you support impunity for the rioters when attacking the police and citizens who oppose them, vandalising HK businesses that happen to sell goods to mainland tourists, then be prepared for what goes round, comes around. Those yellow vest thugs can’t have their cake and eat it too. Rule of law applies to everyone, not just to those you disagree with. Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it. The university student union leaders and the pan-dems gangs are demanding no prosecution on the vandals and those who hurled bricks, metal poles, petrol bombs and offensive chemical substance at police on one hand, while on the other hand demanding prosecution of the police on alleged violence – perfect example of selective prosecution they are advocating, while claiming to champion rule of law – perfect example of double talk. Democracy advocates everywhere are DISGUSTED with their antics. These clowns talk about upholding the rule of law and the judiciary, but are willingly to protest and cause chaos if a ruling goes against them. Really can’t stand their double standards and hypocrisy.

It is now obvious that you bunch of thugs just want to protest even for no clause. You simply do not care about Hong Kong stability and want to create Chaos. These thugs have terrorized Hong Kong for close to 2 months now with no end of this madness in sight. As of this moment, I am calling them terrorists. The riots totally deserve to be apprehended, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law. These terrorists need to be taken off the streets as soon as possible.

      3. @goodday @linda8765 An outsider? I was born and raised in Hong Kong. The protesters never hurted anyone except for self defense? Yeah right” you’re indeed a great liar! You must be blind if you can’t see it. I’ve watched everything on Live TV. SO SPARE US YOUR CROCODILE TEARS! We all saw the behaviour of the HK hooligans on TV and read about their death threats to the police on social media, targeting their families and pointing lasers in their eyes. The police were only doing their jobs. Next time, bring out the PLA paramilitary police for these hooligans.

You and the shameless pan-dems should stop lying and twisting the facts you bunch of liars and hypocrites.THIS IS YOUR SO CALLED 手無寸鐵 UNARMED PEACEFUL PROTEST! WHAT A FREAKING JOKE. Really can’t stand their double standards and hypocrisy. You and the pan-democratic keep lying through your teeth, pointing fingers at the police for using violence against those protesters while on the other hand, you completely ignored and turned a blind eye on those rioters who waged chaos and violence against the police. The police force got hit by glass bottles and bricks thrown by these riots! It was them provoking the police force, that’s why the police started to use tear gas! Serve them right, if this happens in anywhere else in the West, police will have open fire already. There is also a video of a mob lunging a metal rod at an already injured, profusely bleeding police man is evidence the mobsters were organised, prepared, armed and violent. It was “secret” but certainly not loose. Ready for assault. It was the police who were not ready. They used the least force and were mostly unprepared to defend the Legco storming. Their pepper sprays were in small containers designed to be used on single individuals and not big groups. There were no water canons deployed – which would have negated the need for physical contact with the violent mob. The police bosses should be queried why they were so unprepared since the possibility of a clash in Legco was pretty obvious! They should train at NYPD/Paris/London Met Police.

      4. @sam01 they never cause anyone major injury besides those small flash in the eyes n throwing bottles but they know police has full helmut, shield to block. Nothing compared to violence from police n gangsters or thugs

      5. @goodday They are paid protesters by CIA and the UK. Should ship them all to the West and see if they really like Western Democracy. Activists have every right to damage and block public places to protest against a law that protect law-abiding citizens and extradite criminals. But law-abiding citizens have NO right to enjoy their life and commute to work and to school. Are Hongkongers trying to say they have every right to harbour criminals whether they’re Chinese or Canadians?

We should the pan-democrats traitors along with all the protesters on a one way trip to the U.K. If they love their white master so much. Lol! They will soon learn that the white are not everything they advertised to be. These mobs trust no one. They only want blood, want chaos no matter what, want everything they demand. Have you seen the picture of a policeman with blood all over his face? Have you seen the clip showing a policeman being kicked by the rioters on the ground? So it’s ok for the rioters to be violent and the police must stand there to be beaten up? Those who support these rioters must have bricks and rocks thrown in their head.

      6. @goodday

Have you ever read the history of how HK got taken over by the British? You’re probably ignorant about the fact that the queen appointed all the governors of HK. Go to the US or Britain and disrupt their airports If you want to experience a taste of real police brutality. You sound like a very young zealot with no knowledge of world history or current events on a crusade to destroy HK’s economy and livelihoods.

      7. @goodday The media is flooded with biased, one-sided news. The rioters still had the audacity to claim themselves as peaceful. What a freaking jokes. Have you seen the footage showing the rioters throwing bricks, petrol bombs, chemical substance and attacking the police officers with umbrellas and sharp metal rods? Or throwing the metal garbage bin from the bridge trying to strike the police officers under the bridge? Or using the laser pointers pointing at the police officers’ eyes? An old man refused to take a paper handed out by a protester and was bullied by several protesters. They tried to block the way using their bodies. One of them even pretended to be hit by the old man and fell on the floor. There are many more incidents like this. They are the ones who started the fight, turned it into violence. The police officers gave them warning but had no choice to shoot tear gas to disperse them. The majority of the journalists in Hong Kong support the rioters. Therefore, westerners only see the biased news!

      8. @goodday Have you seen the video showing the mob attacking a global times reporter at the airport and tying him up on a chair? He’s a real reporter. Just because this man supported HK policemen (He’s got an “I love HK policemen” logo Tee) and stood the opposite position from those protesters, this reporter was tied up and beaten by hundreds of riots. What’s more, they frisked him and spread his passport information without any permission! What he said in this clip is: “I support HK policemen, you can beat me!” (Based on the previous experience that the riots had just beaten another guy to nearly dead and stopped the rescue teams from taking the victim to the ambulance car. They kept the victim staying at the airport for more than 4 hours!
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4GXZOss6J4

Here is another clip of a young man who were beaten unconsciously by the hooligans. They assault the man just after they found a T-shirt with a statement “I love Hong Kong police”. Hundreds of people beleaguered him, and prevented doctors from helping this man. It was four hours later after the man knocked out, he was finally sent to hospital.

      9. @sam01 that guy is sent to purposely set up the protestors n he belongs to a group of knives stabbers. Look i dont have time to explain details with u but these few days its claim china made many fake news w their social media closed. China admitted its their account but said its closed not bc content but the originator. Loving ur country doesnt mean one needs to love its regime n govt. Look at how Taiwan developed, n history on how they took over china. Just look at the facts from reliable source. Today a hk guy got abducted by them for no reason. Ppl just want rule of law. Its like tell me the rule at least i can avoid.

      10. @goodday Shame on you for supporting and defending these criminals! Regardless of his identity, YOU DON’T TREAT A HUMAN BEING LIKE THIS! It is a situation where people’s basic human rights are flagrantly abused. Who do these protesters think they are? THEY ARE ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF THUGS AND RED GUARDS. Those hooligans aren’t above the law. No one gives them the right to physically assault a defenseless man and tie someone up like that! The man who were detained illegally here is a reporter from mainland China, not a “suspected undercover cop”, and he got beaten up barbarically later but this video didn’t include that part! Those who arrested and beat him are so-called peaceful protesters! This video somehow doesn’t show the part that a “peaceful” protester followed and beat this reporter using an American flag after the reporter was rescued by medical personnels. That’s American way of human rights?

Have you seen the the footage of a old HK man leaving the airport being harassed by the mobs just because he would not take a flyer? An old man who refused to take a paper handed out by a protester and was bullied by several protesters! They tried to block the way using their bodies. One of them even pretended to be hit by the old man and fell on the floor.

Who thrashed a GoGoVan driver and wrecked his van? A dozen of self-proclaimed peaceful protesters were kicking him continuously when he was down. You’d get more support from the non-sleepwalking population if you just called out everyone who was violent and disavow violence on both sides. There are many more incidents like this. They are the ones who started the fight, turned it into violence. The police officers gave them warning but had no choice to shoot tear gas to disperse them. The majority of the journalists in Hong Kong support the rioters. Therefore, westerners only see the biased news!

The preparations, etc, clearly shows the rioting was synchronised and organised. The bricks, sharp metal rods, petrol bombs, umbrellas, gas masks, liquid substance, bows and arrows, were all ordered in advance to inflict physical harm on the police and anyone who dared oppose them. The rioters cannot force their opinions on those who support the bill by rioting and holding the city and its inhabitants hostage. This is not democracy, this is mob rule.

      11. @sam01 the violent actions can be done by the undercovered police. Its evident they r undercover dressed as protestors from live broadcast. Some undercovers only speaks mandarin also. The protestors agreed to be peaceful but some r still violent bc thd undercover goals is to kill at least one police. That way they have a good excuse to sent the PLA, its their vicious ploy

      12. @goodday When police arrest them, should put their riot protest record on their life history; let see how bright their future employment gonna be. That’s the reason they cover their faces anyway, not because of they afraid of CCP but afraid of their future employment. Enough is Enough! Those hooligans aren’t above the law! They have rioted, attacked police, committed arson, blocked roads and highways, littered all over the place, vandalized, smashed police cars as well as other vehicles, and destroyed the legco building, police stations and other private & public properties. Attacked others who disagree with their actions, throwing insults and vulgarities… the list goes on. They called themselves as peaceful protesters? What a freaking joke. You and the shameless pan-dems gangs are after nothing but your own selfish political gains and you will not hesitate to trash the government in order to safeguard your interests and position! You and the pan-dems traitors do not represent the majority of HK people or any world class civilization. You maybe represents the triads in hk!

      13. @goodday Enough is enough! No one is above the law! These self-proclaimed peaceful protesters who block freeways ARE not protesters, they are considered rioters. The mobs blocked roads and highways with metal barriers, snips traffic light wires and then left one place for the other. Set up barricades to block off the area and defend it against police and disrupted public transport by holding train doors open on the city’s Mass Transit Railway. Imagine when an emergency occurs, (ambulance, fire department, private emergency etc so many possibilities you name it)? You just can’t get to the place, are they gonna take responsibility for it? Of course not those THUGS believe themselves to be EMPERORS who are above the law and free to do whatever they want.

These hooligans obstructed and damaged businesses of countless citizens who only want freedom to work without being forcibly obstructed. What have they contributed towards humanity? Their only contributions I see are causing a huge traffic jam, disturbing the people going about their jobs and a big inconvenience to the daily lives of the affected people. They’re urban insurgents. There’s nothing peaceful about their approach to disrupt the society they’re living in, and of course there’s an ulterior motive of what they’re trying to achieve which has nothing to do with the popular will of the residents in the city. Don’t take a word spewed out of their mouths without doing some critical thinking yourself!

      14. @sam01 the damage they caused r mostly to properties but not to people, they didnt cause any serious injuries. Compare to police n the triads they sent to stab ppl thats still in life support n those hit on heads of over hundreds with brain trauma. Also the more violent actions of protestors r done by undercover police

      15. @goodday Hong Kong police and the Hong Kong government and the Hong Kong court are too soft and treat the rioters and trouble makers and protesters like delicate babies, and even say sorry to the law breakers , even though the government is already way too lenient and too soft to the rioters. This gotta stop or someone will die. One of the idiotic rioters was seen holding a hand gun like object in his hand. In one of the confrontation, a bystander was beaten by the rioters, two men with cleavers rushed out to fight the rioters to save him. This is getting out of hand. In an interview, the kids are saying this is a lot of fun for them this summer, and it’s like playing Grand Theft Auto for real! This is not a protest any more! We need to make the organizers pay for the damage. To get a permit to protest, they should put up a bond or buy insurance. That would stop all protests that they can’t control.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqhPyMEZ-D8&t=28s

      16. @goodday

I understand that the HK citizens are feeling helpless and that protests are their only resort to express their views but the percentage success rate would be minimal anyway whatever they do. It’s a lose/lose situation because of the financial impact it has caused and there will be nothing gained out of it as end result. The violence or ‘supposed violence’ caused by protesters will only provide China with a reason to interfere. Whatever rights that HK had could be even less if that happens.

      17. @jimmyszeto if that extradiction law is passed then the economy will be extremely bad. Hk is in a win situation right now bc it forced their true colors out. It needs to first die then live, famous chinese phrase

      18. @goodday
But is forcing the true colours out your ultimate target? I’m worried that once it dies then that will be it. Was so looking forward to my brisket wonton noodles this year but will now have to skip the HK stop.

      19. @goodday They never cause anyone major injury besides those small flash in the eyes n throwing bottles. Yeah right” you’re indeed a good liar! You must be blind if you can’t see it. The rioters cannot force their opinions on those who support the bill by rioting and holding the city and its inhabitants hostage. This is not democracy, this is mob rule! They want violence in HK. If HK police were like American police, these gangsters would have been road kill. Those protesters are hooligans, how can you storm the legislature building, vandalize the place and wave a foreign flag. Buncha traitors. Those rioters are waving British colonial flags, ignoring that the British KILLED protesters against the British rule, whereas the current police is very patient. Destroying the public property and the government buildings, why don’t they try to do that in the US and western countries and see what gonna happen to them. Serve them right, if this happens in anywhere else in the West, police will have open fire already.

It is clear from the tactics used by the rioters, they are well organized, equipped, planned and likely rehearsed. Their approaches are much more assertive solely intended to cause mayhem and chaos, very different from the “Occupy” bunch. Rioters likely got professional helps and advices. HK Police must find out who were financially supporting the riot organizers. The place to start looking are those tycoons who have most to lose if the extradition law passes. Sincerely hope HK government would stand the ground and get the extradition law passes.

      20. @goodday ARE YOU BLIND? You and the pan-democratic still had the audacity to claim that this is a NON VIOLENT PEACEFUL PROTESTS? What a freaking joke. You and the shameless pan-dems should stop lying and twisting the facts you bunch of liars and hypocrites. It’s extremely irresponsible and despicable of the shameless pan-dems to glorify this kind of violent behavior. Don’t try to glorify violent mobs who blockaded and plugged the exhaust of a police vehicle. The riots digged up bricks at pavement and used sharp end of their umbrella as weapons. They blocked the public roads and highways, using metal barrier to charge at the police and storm the legislature building to prevent the lawmakers from casting their votes. It is a riot and there is nothing newsworthy of their comrade hood! These mobs and those fugitives they are rooting for will be brought to Justice.

22. @goodday Haha goodday, seems like you are one of those HK rioters. Go back to school and learn better english first. Are you admitting you got paid to riot and be violent? Haha. Maybe if you had some brain you would know the statistics of people being shot TO DEATH in the US versus in Hong Kong (police being hit instead) and consequently come to some sort of realisation.

How has the police behaved in a communist way? Or even inhumanely? I assume you haven’t been to university or even finished high school. A tip – Don’t just flop words you don’t 100% understand and think you can get away with it. It only reflects poorly on yourself.

I don’t deserve to be in the US? You think YOU deserve it huh? Read my comment again, when did I say I’m from the US? What’s with “go back to China and receive death penalty”? Talking about yourself? Cause if it’s me, I’d certainly get praise and not a death penalty.

@goodday You wrote “look at [the] communist killing their own people”. @goodday, VERY WELL SAID, at least you admit you are Chinese and Hong Kong is a part of China.

        Have a good day 😛

Let’s forget China for a sec. When the HK groups started these violent protests, China interference was nowhere to be seen yet. The way China rule the nation, some of your statements are correct but it does not mean the HK protesters are innocent peaceful protesters…

      26. @jimmyszeto 2 million came out protest but ignored. Protestors never hurted anyone except for self defense but goverment sent thuggisg gangster to use knives many times to stab them n police over violently cause them major trauma

      1. @goodday Hey I just saw this, sorry for the late response. I don’t know why you addressed “there was rule of law by uk” to me, but cool. In what context are you talking about this?

Unfortunately during the period when the British colonised Hong Kong, none of the Chinese there enjoyed any of the rule of law. The rule of law however in Britain has an extradition bill 2003.

And I see you have linked many what some might call reputable ‘resources’. There’s 3 articles on Hong Kong Free Press. Never have heard of this, literally their position is already written in the name of it. Don’t think I need to explain more about this.

Then we have an article from next digital media, a subsidiary of apple daily, founded and linked with Taiwan pro independency people. Long sigh. Also don’t think I need to explain this.

Then you’ve linked a South China Morning Post, but if you took some time to actually read the article, you’d realise that it doesn’t support your argument? How did the Chinese gov interfere?

Then we have the New York Times owned by americans who vouch for their government and presidents slogan ‘america first’. Rioters got cash and some has green cards to America, what do people expect New York times to side on? Let me guess, somebody here also follows Fox news?

        Good job @Good day. haha.

Note: I actually replied a day ago to your other message, but Jaynestar for some reason won’t let me post it!

      2. @goodday Have you seen ordinary people and police hurt from the inflicted violence by rioters?

Lols, read the article, because it doesn’t have anything to do with your comment about people being “stabbed”. What? lols.

    2. @linda8765 just because they didnt have democracy in the past, it doesnt mean they cant fight for it now. Right now, HKers dont vote for their leader. The Chief Executive is chosen by a small committee/approved by China. HK has a legislature with democratically elected representatives (Legislative Council) which is where laws are passed. The Legislative Council has 70 seats. Within the 70 seats, they are either pro-democracy or pro-china. Although Pro-democracy has the popular vote, they occupy less than half of the seats in the Legislative Council because the system is set up so that when HKers vote, they’re only voting for 40/70 seats. 30 are chosen by business representatives – voted by corporations that have good relationships with China; mainly dominated by pro-china political parties. This means only 40 seats are directly electable by the majority of HKers.

  3. How much should I pay u to get shot in the face, no sleep the whole night. Those support cops got pay and left in 30 minutes and they have mainland accent. No the us dont shoot like those communists inhumane police. U dont deserve to be the US, go back to China and recieve the death penalty
