G.E.M.’s New Song “Loneliness” Represents Her Inner Feelings

Gloria Tang (鄧紫棋), better known as G.E.M., has always prospered in the music industry. After winning the Jury Award at the 31st Golden Melody Awards for her latest album City Zoo <摩天動物園> on October 3, G.E.M. immediately released her new single titled “Loneliness” <孤獨> five days later.

“Loneliness” describes how amidst the hustle and bustle of the colorful world, she stopped to listen to her own heart and wrote an honest monologue about her loneliness, which has only deepened during the pandemic, as she is currently residing in Shanghai and separated from her family. The song came about early one morning when she sat aimlessly on an empty street watching the moon. She thought, “What is the meaning of life? Why do we work so hard? Who am I?”

After that moment of self-reflection, she returned home and started playing Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” which then led her to pen “Loneliness.” G.E.M. did what she does best – invest emotions into her lyrics – and turned her many years of experience as a pop star that she has been accumulating since 16 years old into words.

In the song, she raps, “Since young, I wanted to be the first in everything. No matter how hard I grit my teeth, no matter how tired I am, I won’t shed a tear; My willpower is that of an obsessive-compulsive disorder, and my talent cannot be wasted. At home, I have a few shelves filled with trophies.”

Despite receiving recognition for her talent through her many awards, which now includes her first-ever Golden Melody Award, she still bears unspoken troubles. Facing an overwhelming burden of emotions at the peak of her career, she can only vent about the pain in her heart through her lyrics. Throughout the song, the word “loneliness” appears at least five times, while “isolated” appears 12 times, and “lonely” appears 24 times. She belts, “I have become so popular, but excellence did not bring me freedom.”

Through this honest song, the singer hopes to use her own experience of loneliness to comfort those in the same position.
