Bobby Au Yeung (歐陽震華) and Joey Meng (萬綺雯) went on a radio show to promote their television drama With or Without You <東坡家事>, one of TVB’s anniversary dramas of the year.
The comedy series, which is a fictional account of the life of Song Dynasty poet So Tung-po, premiered on October 26 and averaged 24 rating points (approximately 1.55 million live viewers) during its first week of broadcast. Bobby joked, “If that is the average, then that means the highest viewership rating was 40 points, and the lowest was 8 points!”
Unlike previous years, TVB dramas in the past year have all failed to reach an average of 30 rating points during its live broadcast. However, Bobby said he is quite satisfied with With or Without You’s premiere rating, expressing, “The ratings are calculated a little differently now. I don’t know the logistics, but I think one point is over 60,000 viewers. Society must be more flourishing now. More people can afford to go out and have fun.”
To promote the series, Bobby said he will wear only his swimming briefs to promotional events if the ratings of the drama reache an average of 33 points. He then added that he will shave his armpits in front of everyone if the drama reaches 40 points.
TVB producer Tsui Yu On (徐遇安), best known for producing Return of the Cuckoo <十月初五的月光>, Virtues of Harmony <皆大歡喜>, and most recently Come Home Love <愛·回家>, announced that he will have an early retirement. Bobby commented, “It’s good to take a rest.”
Tsui Yu On’s sudden announcement has bought attention to the many staff changes that TVB has underwent in the past few years. Bobby admitted, “The work environment does feel more unfamiliar now. I only go back to the company a few times a year. I’ve met a lot of new colleagues. I also filmed a promotional clip earlier about hiring new PA’s. It’s really tough to be a PA and I hope the rookies are ready to take on the challenge.”
Viewers will be seeing more of Bobby in the next few years, as the 55-year-old revealed on the radio show that he has signed a new contract with TVB. He said with a laugh, “TVB’s a huge company. It’s a famous brand! If I don’t sign with them, where else can I go? I originally wanted to sign 50 years, but I don’t think I can live that long, so I signed a 2-year, 2-series contract.”
Bobby will return to the studios for the upcoming TVB ghost comedy A House of Friends <一屋老友記>, portraying a couple with Nancy Wu (胡定欣). Bobby expressed that it’s great to be a man, saying, “A 50-year-old man can still pair up with a 30-year-old woman. Wonderful!”
