Concert to Commemorate 25th Death Anniversary of Danny Chan

Passing away 25 years ago, legendary Hong Kong singer Danny Chan’s (陳百強) spirit remains alive among many fans. A concert will be held to commemorate the late singer on September 7, which is also Danny’s birthday.

As the day draws closer, many of Danny’s good friends came forth to talk about their past memories. Almost like a brother to Danny, Kenny Chung (鍾鎮濤) revealed that he had been good friends with him since they were young boys. Both families knew each other very well and were close friends. Recalling the day Danny passed away like it was just yesterday, Kenny sighed, “I remember the moment when he left us. His hand was still warm, and a bit swollen. However, he was still just as handsome. Can’t believe it’s been 25 years.”

Danny would have been 60 if he did not pass away. Kenny added, “It’s such a shame that he left so early. If nothing happened, we would’ve been hanging out this very day. I will continue to be a special guest for his concerts, and he would be a guest for mine. We would talk about what outfits we would wear.”

Prudence Liew (劉美君) recalled her initial impression of Danny, “He was very handsome and nice. When I met him for the first time in the recording studios, he complimented me, ‘You’re very cool! I like you!’ At that moment, I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest; I didn’t know how to react.” Asked if she contacted Danny outside of work, Prudence said, “Some of us used to go down to the disco to drink and dance. Does that count as hanging out personally?”

Kenny and Prudence revealed that they will be singing one of Danny’s most iconic songs, “Life Expectations<一生何求> to commemorate him at the concert.

  1. As a child, I listened to Leslie Cheung’s music. As an adult, I learned to appreciate the haunting and melancholy voice of Danny Chan, who is now my favorite singer from the 80s. His voice rings with emotion in all his songs. I often listen to Danny Chan while riding my stationary bike at home, and it brings back many memories of the 80s. His spirit is definitely still with many fans.

    1. @jayne While I don’t consider myself a “fan” in the true sense of the word, I did grow up listening to Danny’s music (alongside the music of all the other great 80s singers) and have always felt that he was so underrated as an artist (singer/songwriter as well as actor). Whenever I think of Danny now, it always saddens me because of how much he struggled in his personal life to survive in an industry that he wasn’t cut out for and that ultimately killed him.

We had so much talent back in those days (80s entertainment industry) and now most of those talents are no longer with us. Makes me want to cry when I think about it….

      1. @llwy12 Danny left at such a young age. His last years were unhappy, but I think many fans will remember him in his peak when he was like a golden boy in the 1980s.

Yes we’ve seen many beloved Hong Kong artistes leave us as they got older. I don’t even want to look up the older veterans who had graced TVB in supporting roles in the 1980s, those who played the moms and dads and gave us such good childhood memories, to see where they are now. I’m afraid to find out unpleasant news.

I was never a fan of Danny but heard his songs growing up. He is truly wonderful and talented. Hope he is in a way better place.

By the way, do you have any news of veteran artist Yeung Chak Lam? You know the actor that played Au Yeung Feng in the 80s version of Legend of the Condor Heroes? I do not think he passed away or anything right? If he did then we would have heard about it already. The last I heard about him was that he was acting for a Malaysian company and wanted to live in Mainland China. However, that was awhile ago so I wonder how he is now?

      3. @hetieshou I don’t know for sure, as most of what I’ve heard have been rumors but from what I’ve read, one rumor is that Yeung Chak Lam is living all alone in Macau, working at one of the casinos over there, while another rumor (which is the more likely one) is that he immigrated to Canada with his family and is living a retired life taking care of his grandkids. The only thing that’s certain is that he has retired from acting already…

Thanks so much for the info! Where did you hear these rumors? I hope that the one about him immigrating to Canada and is living a retired life and taking care of his grandkids is true. The other rumor sounds so depressing about him living alone and working at a casino. I miss seeing him but he is old now so of course needs to retire and enjoy life.

      5. @hetieshou I read a lot of entertainment news from various sources and those were the 2 most recent rumors I came across. The Macau one was based on a supposed “sighting” by fans so in my book, that one holds less water (especially since people can look alike). The Canada one I think was from an article a couple years back….

      6. @jayne Oh, I definitely understand! I still re-watch a lot of old TVB programs from the 80s/early 90s (some even from the 70s) and every time I watch one where there are a lot of veterans who passed away already, I can’t help feeling sad. When I re-watched Looking Back in Anger awhile back ago, I cried really hard (sure, the series itself is already sad but seeing veterans like Kong Ngai and So Hang Suen – both who already passed several years ago – made it even sadder). I was re-watching old TVB variety programs from the late 80s/early 90s recently and actually started to get really sad because so many of the artists in those programs were gone already — there was one that had Danny, Leslie, Anita, Roman Tam, James Wong, and Beyond in it (amongst other singers) and I very nearly cried seeing all of them back onscreen. Same with the old anniversary galas, seeing so many of the talented hosts from that era now no longer with us, definitely made it harder to watch. While on the one hand, I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience the talent of these artists again, it does take a toll on me emotionally, which is why I try to space things out a bit so as not to get super depressed….

  2. Was just talking about him recently. He was talented and good look looking. Love his songs.
