Media Asia Interested in Signing Bosco Wong Once His TVB Contract Expires?

Following Charmaine Sheh Si Man, it was revealed that several other TVB artists, such as Bernice Liu Bik Yee and Joe Ma Tak Chung, intend to leave the company as well. Although Bosco Wong Chung Chak’s contract will not expire until two years later, he has been hotly pursued by other companies. Media Asia expressed their interest and a mainland company was interested in signing him as well.

Allegedly, Bosco was more interested in collaborating with Media Asia, who had their eye on him for a long time. In 2008, Media Asia signed a music contract with Bosco. Media Asia’s intent was to develop a close relationship with Bosco and sign him as an artist once his TVB contract expires. Allegedly, Peter Lam already discussed his terms with Bosco, promising to establish Bosco’s position in the music industry and elevate him to a leading actor in the film industry. Since Bosco was interested in developing his film career , Media Asia had the clout to do so. Once Bosco’s contract expires in two-and-a-half years, it may be possible that he will star in films with Andy Lau Tak Wah.

Currently filming Sneak Attack <潛行狙擊>, Bosco responded to inquiries regarding Media Asia’s interest in signing him, “I still have many years left in my TVB contract. I have not been thinking about this matter.”

Reporters contacted Media Asia executive, Chan Chi Kong, as to whether the company was interested in signing Bosco once his TVB contract expires. Mr. Chan said, “All along, Media Asia believes that Bosco has a bright future. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have signed him as recording artist. We are unclear as to when his TVB contract will expire. If he decides not to renew his TVB contract, we are definitely interested in strengthening our collaboration. His looks, acting, and singing skills are quite good and there should be many more opportunities for further development.”

When reporters contacted TVB executive, Virginia Lok Yi Ling, she sounded surprised. “What? Bosco Wong still has a lengthy contract at TVB! Is this promotion for his music album? His new songs have been airing on the radio.”

Jayne: While I personally feel that Bosco should forget about singing and focus on acting and think that he still has areas for improvement, I can see why he is a hot commodity with other companies interested in signing him. His personality is quite charismatic and he has an intensity inside him, once released, would be quite suitable for films. Give him a few years, when his looks mature more at 35 and it might be a good time to move.

From his property investments, you can tell that Bosco is an ambitious person in making a lot of money. Many artists are happy in buying one house, but he had to buy 3. He values taking opportunities when they come up, not an undecisive person at all. He’s also aggressive in setting the right people connections, sounds like he has a very good relationship with Media Asia.

Not sure when his TVB contract would be up, but don’t think Bosco will be satisfied to staying at TVB for his entire acting career.

  1. Ummm I was reading this thing on another site and it said that Bosco’s contract ends in 2017, that like six years from now does he really have to be thinking about a contract renewal? He should just be like Raymond Lam satisfied with being at TVB. TVB might not pay a lot but in the end they promote people better and have value as a company to an artist. No wonder the artist with multiple career paths are staying with TVB.
I also a agree with Jayne Bosco should stay on an acting path since his singing isn’t that good and he’s not that popular in that field and he has much more improvement as an actor.

    1. Yeah Bosco’s contract will actually end in 2017, so this news is actually not accurate. This means his contract will be up when he’s 37 and it’s still a long time from now. Things might change.

He did say above that he’s not thinking about this matter didn’t he? It might be that the newspaper just want to add more oil to the hot news of “artistes leaving TVB” and use Bosco and Joe as the next socalled suspects. That’s HK journalism for you 😛

There’s nothing wrong in jumping ships for more development. This happen in normal life too where people jump companies many times to get more value and develop themselves. I think there’s nothing wrong if he wishes to act in more than just TVB series in the future, and he fits the condition too as the executive mentioned.

    2. @Yee and Masaharu, thanks for confirming Bosco’s TVB contract expiration date. I guess the above news is sensationalism, picking up on the trail of artists who are leaving TVB.

  2. I do agree that Bosco is quite charismatic and very ambitious. He should definitely stick to acting as I don’t think his singing voice is that attractive. He has a few more years to develop so staying with TVB to expand his horizon while at the same time building a strong connection will help him once his contract comes to terms.

  3. If I were media asia, i would rather promote gordan lam than bosco wong.

gordan lam is such a great actor, he really needs to take lead!!!

    1. Gordon Lam has elevate to producer level. Andy Lau ask him to be the producer for the movie Gallants which recently won the Best Movie for in ‘The Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards’.

      1. Kidd, that’s great news for Gordon Lam! Thanks for sharing. He is a talented actor, but when he turned to the film industry, he always played supporting roles. Glad to hear that he is now a Producer.

      2. This is not good news but a necessity. No offense but he hardly had any in front of camera work, maybe being a producer is his change in career.

  4. He can dance and has a likable and charismatic personality, but yes, I do not see him as a great singer. He’s nowhere near the end of his contract yet, but he can defintely branch out to other things such as movies. I do see him as movie material. He has a lot of potential in that area. Just because he tries other things and builds his relationships, he can still maintain his contract with TVB. Raymond Lam has been active in many areas outside of TVB, yet he is still under TVB management.

    1. Raymond is far more advance in this compare to Bosco. So far I think Bosco only film TVB movies as supporting actors while Raymond has filmed a grand movie with Jet Li for a mainland production and will film another mainland movie after HKC concert and has got concerts in many parts of Asia and US and is highly successful in singing.

I don’t mind if Bosco want to branch to movies but he should forget about singing. He won’t be like Raymond. I myself won’t bother buying his album or going to his concerts.

  5. I like bosco wong but not as much as Raymond lam. They’re both good though! People say tha bosco shouldn’t sing while Raymond should stop dancing. Everyone has their pros and cons. Bosco seems like a more playful person but I still love Raymond!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I personally like Bosco more than Raymond. Bosco has more room in acting different characters, an example in Grace Under Fire. If he joins the film industry, I can guarantee he can be better than Ray. Ray is more Idol look, and don’t know if he can go that nitty-gritty characters like Nicholas Tse’s…and I can see Bosco doing those roles. Even Ron will change his appearance and play funny characters instead of all ‘chok’ and good looking roles.

    1. Grace Under Fire has an unbelievably slow pacing and almost made me asleep but indeed Bosco shows an improved strength in his performance so far. He has improved in his emotional restrains and more into character as compared to what I see in Growing Through Life. I’m also delighted that as someone without a kungfu background, his kungfu/action scenes are pretty convincing.

Eric Tsang actually wanted to bring Bosco into movies too but unfortunately TVB schedule is jam packed. I actually really hope that he can

Bosco, Ron and Raymond all have different styles and giving different auras/strength. Let’s not compare them 🙂

      1. Joey & Masaharu, I watched only a little bit of Grace Under Fire. I am a martial arts enthusiast but don’t always have the patience to watch period dramas.

I found Bosco’s performance in Grace Under Fire to be pure brute intensity, a very refreshing departure from his usually sunshine characters. There is an intensity in Bosco’s acting and working on the full range of emotions would strengthen his acting.

    2. Ray is a good dramatic actor. I think he will be able to tackle the nitty-gritty characters if given a chance. Earlier in his career, when TVB has not decided to groom him into a pop idol, he has played more complex and less glamorous roles. Remember Oscar in Golden Faith?

      1. Kidd, go further back on Step Into past or whatever the title is.

      2. He was ok for not sure if debut but earlier performances but his acting as in his facial expressions were over the top. He toned down of course, in recent years which is good.

    3. Joey, you just not seen enough of Raymond’s series.

You must have forgotten how brilliant he is in TOB and that’s not glamorous at all. How can you know that he can’t play Nicholas Tse’s character?

Did you manage to see the leaked promo stills of his Sister Fa series? He play against type and no more a gentleman and it’s a comedy. It’s harder to act in a comedy with without having a comedy appearance and totally depend on acting without help of funny clothes or hair or OTT handicapped character like Ah Wong.

  7. Bosco just clarified by himself that he will stay with TVB for many years to come and is not having any thoughts of leaving.

Full stop for his rumor, but what a waste for his potential to stay in Totally Very Bad as one of the money churning machines when he’s already 30 and is marketable. Really. TVB sux.

    1. Jayne: He’s not as ambitious as we thought after all.

      1. Probably the company promised him something. Or a matter about confidence.

      2. Probably

        a) afraid or not confident or not many connection
        b) still long contract
        c) many close friends in TVB and comfortable there
        d) grateful to TVB
        e) not popular enough
        f) all of the above

    2. Masaharu, I think Bosco only made comment that he intends to stay at TVB for a long time because his contract will not expire until 2017. It would be unwise for him to state otherwise since he still has 6 years left at TVB. Many things can happen in such a long time. Maybe TVB may even give him the Best Actor Award if the right cards are in place.

Right now, Bosco has a good relationship with TVB. Although fans may argue that he has been given largely supporting roles in the last 3 years, TVB allowed him to dabble in music, movies, and film in China, offering a good income.

Due to the length of his TVB contract, I think Bosco realize now is not the prime time to think too aggressively outside the company. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to. Eventually he will if he wants to make more money. He strikes me as the sharp type with business acumen like Michael Miu and will not say things to place him poorly with the company.
