[Obituary] Lily Leung Passes Away at 90

On August 13, veteran Hong Kong actress Lily Leung (also known as Leung Shun Yin 梁舜燕) passed away at the age of 90. Speaking on behalf of Lily’s family, TVB shared that Lily was surrounded by family when she passed away at the hospital.

Lily’s Legacy

Lily was considered as the first actress in Hong Kong television. Prior to joining the entertainment industry, Lily worked as a perfume sales representative for a high-end department store. It wasn’t until 1957 that her husband encouraged her to audition as an actress. However, as the space was full, the producer suggested Lily to try voice dubbing. Lily eventually joined Asia Television, and became one of the first actress to sign to a television station and one of the first news anchor.

With Lily’s elegant poise and temperament, Lily soon became the audiences’ favorite, and filmed the Hong Kong first television series, Happy Family <幸福的家庭>.

Her most well-known role was in the 1995 drama, A Kindred Spirit <真情>, in which she played a difficult to please mother-in-law from the upper class. Her character made a strong impression among viewers, even among younger audiences.

Lily loved acting and did not let her age deter her from doing what she loved. In 2004, Lily was honored with TVB Anniversary Awards for Lifetime Achievement. Some of Lily’s more recent works include Fist Fight <兄弟>, As Time Goes By <好日子>, Justice BaoThe First Year <包青天再起風雲>, as well as the unreleased dramas Wonder Women <多功能老婆>, and Chinatown <唐人街>.

Explaining Elegance and Grace

As Lily is often recognized for her grace and elegance, Lily once shared her thoughts, “Elegance is not just about being in front of the camera and posing. It is about the person’s appearance of being neat and put-together, and how you treat others. It must be sincere and cordial. You need to have both to be elegant.”
